Lost Girl - Exclusive interview with showrunner Emily Andras on Season 3

21 Dec 2012

SpoilerTV recently had the opportunity to interview Emily Andras, the new showrunner of Lost Girl, which returns to Showcase on January 6th and will also premiere on January 14th in the US on SyFy.

Tariq: How much do fan comments you read online affect your writing? any examples of decisions you took as a reaction to fan response?

Emily: I can't speak for the other writers, but I personally don't read much fan commentary when we're actually writing and producing the season. When we're between seasons -- like now, for instance -- I like to catch up on what the fans are feeling, anticipating....what they felt worked in past episodes and what they felt didn't. It's also really fun to read what they think might happen in the upcoming season based on the promos etc. I feel totally chuffed by their enthusiasm and energy. We truly have the greatest, most dedicated fans in the world.

But when we're mid-season...too many voices in your head...too many doubts about the story you're trying to tell can mess with your mojo and you can end up with a show that refuses to commit, or takes chances, or have a vision -- which generally equals a show that simply doesn't work as good television.

Our number one job as writers is to continue to spin a story that keeps the audience engaged. Even if the audience is outraged or sad or shocked, if we've done our job properly and made them fall in love with the characters, they will keep coming back to see what happens next. So we take fan comments with a big grain of salt -- after all, on Lost Girl we have a variety of very dedicated shippers who all want different things! If we try to please everyone at the same time, we will dilute the delicious twists and turns that keeps Lost Girl compelling.

That being said, we are definitely in tune with the overall wants, likes and dislikes of the fanbase AS A WHOLE. I know the Dyson shippers like to see Kris without his shirt on, that Kenzi fans want the quips to keep on-a-coming -- and that the Lauren fans just want more Lauren being Lauren, (preferably close to Bo and possibly in a labcoat). Our Zoie Palmer fans are particularly passionate -- which is nice because Zoie Palmer is an incredible actress and a wonderful person. So I can work with that :)

Tariq: What can you tell us about the new character Tamsin? what kind of fae is she?

Emily: First of all, let me say that Rachel Skarsten is the find of the century. Second of all, in no way am I telling you what kind of Fae Tamsin is (and who says she's Fae at all?) What I can tell you is that the character of Tamsin brings an incredible new energy to the show and to our Lost Girl gang. She is complicated and mysterious. And she is blonde. There...I've already said too much.

Tariq: Lauren had a pretty big arc last season with both her freedom and history with the Fae addressed, what is coming up for Lauren in season 3?

Emily: Lauren fought the Garuda alongside the rest of our gang at the end of season two, and I think she continues to earn their respect throughout season three -- which is a complicated way of saying Lauren is more integrated into our group -- to a point. After all, Lauren is human, and that comes with certain limitations. We will continue to see many sides of Lauren and learn more about who she is this year. She is a great character and Zoie has incredible range, so we can really play with that.

Tariq: Will we see ramifications of Kenzi's promise to The Morrigan in season 3?

Emily: Well, we will definitely see the Morrigan!

Tariq: Anything you can share on the new recurring character, Massimo

Emily: He is played by Tim Rozon and he makes a very interesting proposition to one of our regulars.

Tariq: Any plans to have an Incubus on Lost Girl

Emily: If we ever did, we'd have to do it 'right'.

Tariq: Will the fact that Lauren triggered the super succubus last season be addressed? Does Lauren have a unique effect on Bo?

Emily: It may very well be. I think we all know that at the very least, Lauren has a very unique effect on Bo's heart :)

Tariq: How dark will Bo go this season? the promos look intense

Emily: Intense is good! But we're still bringing the capital 'F' fun, I promise.

Tariq: Anna Silk once said she expected Lost Girl to end after 3 or 4 seasons, assuming continued amazing ratings and commercial success, creatively how many seasons creatively do you see Lost Girl going on for?

Emily:So much of that is up to you guys, our fans! If you keep watching and supporting us and our ratings are good, who knows how long we can go?

  5. "Lauren fought the Garuda alongside the rest of our
gang at the end of season two, and I think she continues to earn their
    respect throughout season three..."

Lauren hasn't screwed up any worse than the others in the group. If she wants to fully gain everyone's respect, all she needs to do is stop telling lies and keeping secrets.

  6. Thank you for the fantastic interview. ANdras really seems to know her fanbase well. I couldn't be more excited for season 3!

  7. Tariq-- FANTASTIC questions, great interview!!! Thanks for making this happen. Emily really seems to get the fanbase and I'm super glad she's open to our thoughts while still driving an important and empowering show story. These actors really carry it so well, but its the writing that was difficult and uneven last season. So glad that was tackled hard this season. Cannot WAIT for S3 to start.

  8. It is not like she is alone in the keeping secrets or telling lies bit, but she does get the most flack for it despite Dyson and Trick keeping very big secrets from Bo and their multiple lies. I wish they would all get called out on their shit, instead of some always getting next to no anger from in show or by the fan base for their own lies and secrets.

    ReplyDelete
  9. "I wish they would all get called out on their shit"
Agreed. I can get behind this.

  10. I just don't like Lauren. But I'm hoping that LOST GIRL will continue for few more seasons

  11. I'm surprised at how much EA seems to know her fanbase considering the criticism she often gets. She nailed it! Also looking forward to get to know more about Lauren. And of course we knew she has a very unique effect on Bo's heart but that is always nice to hear from the big bosses. Love Doccubus.

Appreciate the interview, thanks Tariq and SpoilerTV.

  12. Apparently the interviewer is a Lauren fan. So pro Lauren har??? Lauren being a L character and hence very popular with LBGT community! Her "fans" might be the most active and vocal online. But many of the casual viewers are not that keen in Lauren. In fact the show now try too hard to accommodate her character .Her storyline is actually very boring for the casual viewers.

    ReplyDelete
  13. You can only speak for yourself here. I'm not a Lauren "fan", I'm not part of the LGBT community and I don't find her storyline boring at all. I happen to enjoy her (and Bo together) much more than I do Dyson - and I'm a straight woman.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Why not just give human Lauren some screentime in every episode, give her many female lovers and made her an incredible doctor in medically science. Just get her away from BO please.Writers are pleasing fans , many who are so fond of Lauren becoz of her sexual orientation. They try so hard to give Lauren's role story development that they are slaughtering and limiting BO's character!! Lauren was the character that has a dark side in the first season and now they change it and made her "good" and emotional and clingy on BO!! Let Lauren be dark in season 4.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Why not? Gee, it might just be because you simply do not get why people like her or this storyline at all.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Kenzi is human but she can really bind into the fae circle NOT Lauren who is a boring and nerdy character, Zoie Palmer are mainly good in emotional scenes, not only her character is in consistent, her performance in the show is also not consistent.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thanks for the goodies, SpoilerTV! Can't wait to find out what's up with Kenzi and Doccubus. I love Bo and Lauren together!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Definitely not everyone are from the LBGT community, but a large part and most of her "fans" are from LBGT!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Really? The many comments of those "fans" all over the web especially at the L community tells a lot already! haha~ And maybe you don't get why people don't like her and her storyline at all. Well I know very soon her supporters will all be here soon, I wouldn't waste my time against a community. I am at a disadvantage. bye

    ReplyDelete
  20. Um, no. That's just you making assumptions again. Of course a large part of her fanbase are gay/lesbian/bi but so are Bo's fans and so are Lost Girl fans. They are not lesser than fans who are straight. You have no ground to base your "argument" on.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, as predicted , very soon those obsessed Lauren fans will take over this comment section and flood with pro Lauren comments! haha~ GoodBye

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't need to "get" why people don't like her. You are the one implying her "fans" only like her because she's gay and that's all they want to see. If that's all you "read" online then you really need to improve your interpretation skills. Who knows, you might just like her then ;)

    ReplyDelete
  23. And as expected, you are just another bitter fan who runs when confronted with facts. Let me guess, you run that oh so lonely account on Twitter?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I consider myself a casual viewer and straight but I happened to love Lauren, and Lauren and Bo. They are the emotional core of the show. I also find Bo and Lauren's stories individually to be the most intriguing and involving. Nothing is black and white in their lives and every decision they make don't come easy and come with a price.

Don't generalized, give the viewers more credit. Sexual orientation has no bearings on my likes and dislike.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Exactly. I'm in the same category as you but perhaps a little more than a casual viewer in the sense that I do go online to look for articles about Lost Girl and read some of the forums.

The claim that only gay viewers like Lauren/Lauren and Bo and only because she's gay is ridiculous and rather offensive. It's like saying straight girls only like Dyson because he looks good without his shirt off. I would like to think with a mature show like this, its viewers would be more mature too and can see beyond a character's sexual orientation or physical attributes.

My sister is gay but she couldn't care less about any of the other lesbian characters or couples on other shows. In fact she loves straight couples like Castle and Beckett from Castle and Robin and Barney from How I Met Your Mother. Lost Girl is the only show where she truly loves a gay character and a FF pair.

I myself have been pretty indifferent to FF pairs on tv but Lost Girl's Bo and Lauren stole my heart. And that is that. It never mattered to me that Lauren is a lesbian and that both of them are women. It's the story and the interactions between the actresses that sealed the deal for me.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree. I believe the LGBT fans form a substantial bulk of the LG fanbase. They are not a tiny irrelevant group. Those who are looking for a "traditional" show with an overwhelming majority of straight fans are watching the wrong show.

I'm drawn to LG because it dares to be different. It's passes no judgment, makes no issue of female sexuality and characters sexual orientation and it's unapologetic in its approach. It's like breath of fresh air.

    ReplyDelete
  27. You should not bother with this "person". They run a twitter with almost a 100 tweets talking about how bad Lauren is and shit talk both fans and the actress. They go to various forums and social media sites and spread this kind of hate and a lot of lies where they say what fans (particularly Doccubus fans) apparently think. They are... not completely right in the head if you are more familiar with them. They even go as far as going to LGBT areas to spread their hate and talk shit about the character, the fans etc.

They have also posted more than once in this comment section but different names. You can recognize it on their "arguments" and insane claims and their self pitying about being outnumbered and them announcing they will make their grand escape aka not bother to actually discuss matters.

I guess nice of them to not advertize for the show to kill of Lauren in this comment section as they do elsewhere or make her fuck guys so she can be turned straight. When you become familiar with them you can quickly pick out who they are. They pretty much always talk about Lauren/Doccubus fans as only LGBT people and with a negative undertone. To them, we are not just fans, no we must be lesbian fans and obsessed at that. Clearly they have some deeper issues, particularly with the time investment they spend to spread so much hate. It only makes it more amusing that they claim they are sane, but anyone who likes Lauren or Lauren/Bo, are insane and also must be LGBT.

    ReplyDelete
  28. LOL save all the effort Doccubus team Lauren fans , I don't even read any of all your replies, many all you are just watching for same sex relationship! Lost Girl is tuning more into a lesbian show than supernatural show and the new show runner are kissing all your ass. They are trying hard and by all means to fit geeky boring Lauren into the storyline, giving her more scenes with BO and so on LOL!! 90% of Laurens fans are Lesbian and there's no need to deny a fact. If Lauren is not a gay character, she will be very far less popular, give her a male lover and all will see..loh. I will not waste my precious time here, these united pro Laurens fans are passionately all over the internet obsessing Lauren. They only care about the interests of Lauren, all the other characters be slaughtered and suffers is ok, but not their beloved Lauren, they will complain make make noises!! Lauren must be in every episode regardless of storyline, BO can only be with Lauren and not any Dyson or any other. Liar Lauren is so"perfect" for them.

    ReplyDelete
  29. As expected, my comments will be views as assumptions by Lauren fans! And Lauren fans don't making assumptions?? Everybody who are voicing their views does that in some way!! Nope your ground for argument is shaky, far too many gay and lesbians love Lauren becoz she is really gay and not bisexual like BO or straight like other characters!! Give Lauren a male lover and you will see their reaction!! LGBT fans are only a part of the viewers but they are just the most active and vocal online. To them Lost Girl is more of a a lesbian show that represent them and no longer a supernatural show!, they are watching for same sex relationship!! I will not waste my precious time here with Lauren fans. Many know in their heart who her fans are and why! BYE

    ReplyDelete
  30. BO is bisexual , Dyson is straight, Kenzi is straight, for the main cast, only Lauren is gay! LOL
Moreover a bisexual role in the middle of a triangle get an amount of hate from both sides, many of the comments from these fans online tells a lot!! If Lauren is not gay, she is straight or even bisexual, it will paint a entirely different picture! Majority of her passionate fans are attracted to her because she is really gay, she will be far less popular if she is not a gay character! Give her a male lover and see!

I have nothing against lesbians, just pointing the facts. It's a choice and that's it! My focus is the show and the show is turning more and more into a Lesbian show and no longer a supernatural show. Why not watch the L word? They are shows that traditionally caters for same sex relationship. Many of these fans are actually hoping for a Xena for Lost Girl. Some really wanted history. Loh

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many Lost Girl fans are so obsessed with the love story which is only a small part of the plot. They are taking it too hard, I wonder what would the reaction be if Lauren has a man in her life? Many of the obsessed fans who are so active online are just watching for same sex relationship and gay character Lauren whom they passionately support by posting many paragraphs, spend long hours voting for Lauren by deleting cookies and intermittent disconnection for dynamic IPs at various social networks on the web. It's always the same
names, the same group of people ...They are actually not that many, but they are incredibly united and active and it creates a Lost Girl rely on Lauren illusion loh

Doccubus fans/Lauren fans might be the most active and extremely vocal online and they are very united, but the show does not rely on Lauren! If the producers have to rely on these
fans to keep ratings going and renew for more seasons, then the show is really pathetic. I have to say I am one of those casual viewers that watch for BO and Kenzi, their sisterly love, adventures and story plots.
    I
remember reading somewhere here, an objective viewer estimating 40% are doccubus fans, 15%-20% are Dyson fans and 40% are casual viewers. Well I reckon out of the 40% doccubus fans, maybe 60% are hard-cored Lauren obsessed fans , they don't really care too much about story plots and only want Lauren to be on their screens for every episode, the other 40% are really doccubus fans, they love the show because BO is with Lauren, like them as a couple and maybe half or more of these 40% are fans of BO.

On the other hand out of the other 40% casual viewers, they are many who are not interested in Lauren , in fact they are some who dislike her character. And casual viewers consist mostly of families and older viewers and men and people who are so straight, they watch because of BO, Kenzi and other characters. BO is the sexy protagonist and Kenzi is such a colorful character with comedic aspect and well-liked. Other characters such as Trick, vex and Hale and so on also have viewers rooting for them.

Frankly, very very rarely that I do comment on the web as Lauren/Doccubus fans are way too vocal and monitoring all the various social network and internet. Definitely there are many other casual viewers like me who are just silent viewers of the show. We save our energy and effort, not interested in a verbal war! Too old for that~ hoho

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, outnumbered me wouldn't waste my precious time here against a group of united pro Laurens fans. You all can flood here with all the comments , it does not affect me in anyway as I will not be reading a word. GoodBye ALL

    ReplyDelete
  31. BTW some final words to add, many of Lauren fans are even labeling the actress as gay in real life, claiming she is in a same sex relationship, they were so excited about it !! Loh. Com'mon there's no need to deny the fact that majority of Lauren's fans are Lesbians. She have really strong support from LBGT especially gay fans. If Lauren is not a gay character, she will be far less popular with much lesser fans! BYE

  33. you have too much time on your hands. and you need to take another Risperdal. absolutely nothing you’re saying here or anywhere else is going to make a difference in anything. that’s just the facts of life. this show has become an international success despite your opinions about it and any particular character in it. and if you believe that the L community is so huge that it can sustain a tv show, you need to add Seroquel to your breakfast cereal.

    ReplyDelete
  34. zzzzzz haha~ Why should I even try to change anything?? I am just stating some facts that most Lauren fans are trying to deny but they can't! I don't really read all the comments here either! You must have too much time on your hands after taking risperdal , why read my comments? So you are saying you add Seroquel to your breakfast cereal har?? haha~ And who said the L community can sustain a TV show?? Definitely not me, maybe it's you and most obsessed Lauren fans. Well for sure, there are many Lauren fans that have too much time on their hands, they are all over the web famously and will be here soon! Whatever and whoever wants to reply, go ahead, some facts just simply can't be deny!! Period, I am not reading and I am out from this very moment!

  35. There are many LGBT fans, but they are nowhere near as many as heterosexuals fans.

In 2011, the Williams Institute at UCLA published the results of a LGBT research study on population data and reported that nearly 4% of the total population identified as L, G, B, or T. Of this percentage, 1.8% identified as bisexuals (with more women than men identifying as such), an estimated 19 million Americans (8.2% of the population) had engaged in same-sex behavior, and 25.6 million (11% of the population) admitted to some same-sex attraction. (Of those who identified as bisexual, 25% said they were closeted.)

If we apply this population data to Lost Girl’s total viewership, then 4% is LGBT — and 96% is heterosexual.

On Syfy, Season 1 Nielsen ratings for 01.01 totaled 1.47 million; 01.08
    had 1.21 million; 01.13 had 1.21 million. Season 2 ratings were 1.07
    million for 02.01; 02.06 had 1.15 million; 02.13 had 0.93 million; 02.18
    had 1.21 million; 02.22 had 1.45 million.

In a nutshell: the audience that is keeping Lost Girl on the air and the majority of viewers that are fanning flames for Bo & Lauren are heterosexuals.

  36. You can't even speak propper English. How 'bout you crawl back to the hole you came from?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Your comments aren't viewed as assuptions. They are viewed as delusion. If you had any facts to present, you would have more than 0 followers on Twitter or wouldn't run when fans of the show who possess more than one brain cell confront YOU with actual facts. Sorry you are bitter your least favorite character is actually a popular one. Sorry you are bitter your least favorite relationship is the emotional core of the show. You can enjoy your heteronormative fantasy in every other show on television. Please, do. In the meantime, you can keep living under the delusion that your opinion is a fact.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Talk about mental issues.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1 - Wrong. Bo doesn't get hate from anyone.

2 - Lauren is gay, that is a fact. If you give her a male love interest, the show will lose all credibility and the audience will leave in droves (read point #5)

3 - If you bothered to keep up with actors Twitter accounts as much as you do stalking Doccubus fans online, you would know the actress isn't straight.

4 - For that very same reason stated above, it is undeniable she has strong support from the LGBT community. Emily Andras herself has admitted the LGBT fanbase along with Genre fanbase are two of the shows target audience. They are purposely "catering" to them. If that is not something you're comfortable with, perhaps you should find another show to watch.

5 - Honey, sexual orientation isn't a choice. Please, go grab a book and do some actual reading.

6 - You do know that Bo has a female love interest in addition to a male love interest, right? They are not catering to anything, they are telling the story. Which, if you were an actual fan of the show and not a fanatic, bitter homophobe, you would know.

I'm not even going to touch part 2 of your post because it is the exact same thing you posted annonymously on a lesbian board.

Now, tell me, who is the one monitorining social networks again? Christmas is in 2 days, perhaps you should get yourself a really nice mirror. It could do you wonders.

    ReplyDelete
  40. You are wildly inappropriate in your statements--> You dislike doccubus fans? You dislike the fact that part of the story is Bo's connection to Lauren? Fine. Don't watch it. But do not insult the rest of the audience with your "facts" on life and your anger that we are excited for a show that treats all relationships equally. It's never been done. It's fresh, it's evocative, and it's here to stay for a while if we support it well. Take your hate and move on.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Also? This one particular commenter proves the point that there is alot of intense hatred for the one gay character on the show. If you don't like Lauren, it's all good. Not everyone loves all the characters on the show. But to continually come back on every piece of social media and point out why the show's has ruined itself because it's giving time for Bo&Lauren to develop speaks for itself.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I miss Michelle Lovretta.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Well, one single survey and you take it to be all fact and represent all? It's a US survey with ratings only for the US not the whole world!! Why same sex marriage is recognized in Canada and NOT the US only in a few states? Why so many Lauren L fans were so worried and claim Syfy is going to affect the storyline of Lauren and same sex love?? If you take this survey too seriously, than you should tell those many obsessed Lauren fans to stop claiming Lauren is the viewership magnet! It also totally does not change or able to deny the fact that majority of Lauren fans are L!! Their numerous comments online throughout the web worldwide tells really lot about their perspective, they are extremely vocal and active obsessing and they stated gay Lauren and same sex relationship is the success of this show!! Poor you after taking Risperdal and Seroquel , you are still so biased. And to the moderator, you are really biased and pro Lauren, deleted all my comments and leave the comments of others ?? My argument hit on the nail and it stands and pro Lauren you so unhappy?? Yeah deleting my comments and leaving others paint a fake picture and misleading facts to your liking!! GyFy comments involved personal attacks and encouraged ?? The reason why many said that twitter is fair to all with freedom of speech. I am back here actually not to read but just to see whether am I correct that this site will be biased and my comments will be deleted!! I am so correct...haha

  44. A really biased site, nevermind there's twitter that is fair to all!! And to the moderator, you are really biased and pro Lauren, deleted all my comments and leave the comments of others

See, this one tells a lot already, they labeled the actress as Lesbian and really obsessed with her!! Who bothered to stalk doccubus fans??? haha, the fact is they are everywhere dominating all the comments online and they attack anyone who is not pro Lauren like me! LOL
Lesbian whether is a choice or not depends on individual, some claim born like that...whatever, I am not interested Haha~ Save your book for yourself
Yes, Doccubus fans really need a mirror, many of the comments by you people here are misleadig and debatable!! I save my time and energy on that, this such a biased site and my comments will be all deleted.
