Dexter - Season 8 - Some early snippets from Scott Buck

17 Dec 2012

Angel Batista (David Zayas) is retiring, but I’m assuming he’ll have a role?
Buck: He announced his retirement. The finale took place just before he filed his papers. The situation has suddenly changed a great deal.

Hannah (Strahovski) wasn’t killed off, which surprised me since usually guest stars tend to only last one season on the show. Will she be back next season?
Buck: I certainly hope so, yes. I can’t elaborate because we’re just at the beginning of figuring out next season and deals have not been made yet. But I’m very interested in having Hannah back.

Is there a concern that viewers will no longer sympathize with him and Debra? Or are we supposed to be turning on him in the home stretch?
Buck: I don’t think we’re supposed to be turning on him, necessarily, but I think we want people to understand him a bit better. The more human he becomes the more responsible he becomes for what he’s done and that’s something we’re not trying to shy away from. It makes the character more interesting and complex and even more culpable.

In terms of Deb’s romantic feelings for Dexter, you dealt with those feelings head-on part-way through the season. What are Debra’s feelings for Dexter now that she’s killed LaGuerta?
Buck: She’s so overwhelmed by everything I don’t think she can even process what she’s thinking. But she’s going to be in a very different place than we’ve ever seen her before next season. I think she’ll always love Dexter in her own way but I don’t know she’ll continue to harbor romantic feelings for him.
Will LaGuerta’s death bring them closer together or drive them further apart?
Buck: A little of both. It bonds them in a unique way, but it’s a very tragic way. They will always have that connection but it’s not necessarily the most positive way of being bond to someone.

Will there be a Big Bad villain next season? Do you even need one given all the drama you’ve set up among the main characters?
Buck: It will be a different incarnation of that sort of character. We’re not thinking of it in terms of a Big Bad. But there will be people for Dexter to go up against.

But it won’t be another serial criminal that police are tracking at the same time?
Buck: It won’t be the traditional Big Bad, no.

Next season has been called a likely final season. Is that still the case? What conversations have you had with the network about that?
Buck: That’s a Showtime decision and I’m not aware a final decision has been made. But we’re approaching the season as if it’s a final season. If we’re told otherwise, we’ll redirect.

So terms of the story, you’re taking it toward a satisfying series conclusion next year and not a cliffhanger?
Buck: Absolutely.

Do you have a clear ending scene in mind?
Buck: Yes, absolutely. We’ve always had various was to end the show and they were always quite similar. It was more a matter of landing on exactly how we want to end this and that’s the direction we’re moving right now.

Is there a chance of this show having a happy ending?
Buck: A serial killer story can only end so many ways and none of them are particularly happy.

  1. Considering how Dexter has wandered away from his code and that everyone he kills isn't as guilty (or guilty at all) as those in the early season, I'm sort of thinking that he may have to end up killing himself, a little like how Prison Break ended.

  2. I still hope it has a happy ending despite Buck's warning

  3. Thought the same, or Deb does it.

  4. I'm more leaning to Deb eventually killing Dex.

  5. I have a feeling that the ending will be complex enough such that simple words like 'happy' or 'sad' will have no meaningful place in the discussion ;)

  6. Is SB trying to tell that Dex manipulated his sister into killing LaGuerta? The situation was weird, but I can't believe he'd do that to his sister. What for? To break her completely?
Hannah was a great character. But if they want to bring her back just to go after Deb, then it's better they don't.
"There’s more things that Dexter has not yet discovered about how he came to be who he is." So I guess we'll get many flashbacks. That's always interesting. I missed this.
Well, if they haven't start working on S8, I'm not stopping them. Go to work!!!

  7. I hope not. But if someone puts an end to Dex, I hope it's Deb.

  8. The happy ending is tricky. Especially with a killer.
When Dex dies, fans are angry and disappointed. If he lives and keeps on killing, people die. Not all of them are killers. Some will be innocent.
But I hope he lives and hunts with Deb. I'll live in that illusion for the next year.

  9. I hope not as well. But if anyone is going to put Dex down, its Deb.

  10. It does seem like a palatable proposition considering how Deb was in the final scenes...but also, maybe Dexter will turn himself in or disappear or something, because he is realizing (as S.B. was suggesting) he has to be responsible for his own actions, but I guess it's hard to say if that really will make him more human or not, or if he will just find his own reasons to justify it?

  11. In some ways the way he responded to her was almost like he knew that would rattle her, so I guess it could be perceived as manipulation, but like you were saying, the situation was so weird for both of them, (and couldn't we say the same thing about Deb since she refused to walk away from the scene...that she manipulated him into manipulating her?) I don't know if they can really say that, considering we don't get a lot of emotion or thoughts from Dexter during those moments...

The part you quoted is very interesting. I was hoping there was more underneath both Dex and Deb than what we have seen, because I have always felt like there is something missing...

  12. Ya. I think it's a premature thing for them to say, because each viewer might respond to it differently, depending on where any of our own ethics or understanding of the show lies!

  13. I don't think he manipulated her. But he knows her, and he probably knew that she would choose him over LaGuerta, like he choose her over Hannah and his brother.

"she manipulated him into manipulating her"? Like she wants him to make her kill? I think that she had no time to talk to him and walk away (he told her to walk away) before LaGuerta woke up. Deb was just overwhelmed. It was too much to handle. Just my opinion.

Yes, now I remember. We were talking about possible traumas in Debs past, right? Was months ago. SB pointed out, there is more to Dexter and how he became to what he is. And I don't know if it was you or someone else that thought there is a possibility Harry raised Dex like that (to be a killer). I personally doubt that, cause Dex was killing animals before Harry started to train him (according to S1 flashbacks). But maybe we will learn more about that next season. But it's possible that harry made it worse. We know that Dex is not a complete sociopath. And maybe Harrys training affected Deb more than Harry and Dex believed.

  14. *they want Hannah back but they gotta wait for her to sign on before they can write her in for S8 so im sure she will be in S8 in some way even if it means seeing her in Argentina waiting for Dex.....

*glad they're dropping this "in love" thing Deb has for Dex....never liked it.....

*im happy they're not having the Big Bad Killer next year.....and will be doing the Closures of the main characters...that should be better.....

*and being they have already a Series ending in mind...i hope it comes out Explosive that the fans will all be satified......☺.....

  15. According to your first sentence, "Is SB trying to tell that Dex manipulated his sister into killing LaGuerta?", that is what I was first referring to... I was saying "if" that is what S.B. is implying, then Dexter wouldn't of had to do that, if Deb would have backed down and/or left the scene, and so ultimately she threatened or manipulated Dexter first by not walking away, as he requested.

I'm also just saying, sometimes I think the showrunners say things that are only partially true, because I think both you and I feel it's more complicated, than a bunch intentional manipulations.

    ReplyDelete
  16. "showrunners say things that are only partially true" Especially when they talk S8, that they haven't even start working on. I think, everything they say right now is vague and we shouldn't interpret too much into it.

But, as I said, everything is open and possible.

  17. In my opinion we could have 2 possible ends, the one deb will kill dex... The other one will be deb's death. I m not sure she can support Laguerta's murder. What if she kill herself? May be Dex will react and try to be a different man after that.
