  1. I loved it so much! That was a great episode.

This just reinforced my "Sam is being magically fucked with and Amelia isn't real" theory. Wish he would have punched her ass of a father, though, because I was not down with him insulting John, thank you very much.

Aw, poor Cas. And poor old guy that he stayed with.

And the cat was adorable. LOL at "dumbass".

  2. My favorite episode of the series. Hopefully, they can keep this up.

  3. This episode was MUCH better than I thought it be... I love that we essentially have the old Cas back, lack of pop culture understanding and all, despite the hell he's still living on the inside. I also loved Sam's speech to Fred and watching how it resonated with Cas. Maybe most of all, I loved watching Cas interrogate a cat. Huh... the word "Cas" showed up a lot in this paragraph haha... apparently those are the parts of the episode I remembered most.

I think the Sam and Amelia flashbacks were pretty good, too. I actually really liked her dad. But ummmmm what? Amelia's husband turns out to be alive? I wonder what goes down there.

My only complaint? I wish we'd gotten a lucid Mike Farrell earlier on in the episode. And I'm still super curious to see where this upper management angel stuff is going... I don't think it can be anywhere good.

  4. It was F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C!!!!!!!!It really exceeded my expectations!!!(which were also good),I loved eveything about it!!!But there were so many heartbreaking moments...:'( Cas having suicide thoughts?!Sam NEVER BEING ABLE TO LIVE HAPPILY?!:'((((( It's so wrong to say this but why does Don have to be alive????And am I the only one who thinks sth might be wrong about Amelia's father and Don's sudden ressurection???I smell a demon thing going on

  5. Dean: Cas you can ride shotgun. That was a slap in the face to Sam.

  6. Overall, liked this episode. The gags were expected and there have definitely been funnier SPN episodes, but this was fun. :) I HATED Naomi saying that bit about ringing the bell and Cas come running. Poor Cas! He really does want to atone, or at least try. Alas, its possibly for his best that he don't go back yet? We'll see how things go. Was amused by Sam keeping Cas from getting shotgun. And I can more then understand why the boys don't want him around /all/ the time. But! I did love Dean making a point of getting Cas to talk to him, to tell him what's wrong. Dean seriously seems to care again, and I'm loving it.

Another thing, I actually enjoyed the Sam flashbacks this episode! I don't think 'running away' is a good enough explanation for what he did, but at least it seemed more real then 'I just didn't' search for his brother. Liked Amelia's dad. I actually, for the first time, managed to tolerate Amelia! Still not fully likable, but definite improvement. The Don thing... Ugh, I hate that they went that route. Even the unimportant side characters that we've never met suddenly come back from the dead on SPN! (coughs)

dean ? no i love dean

  8. I enjoyed it alot, but holy anvil, Batman. You know, writers, we really do understand subtext, you can lighten up a bit.
Loved, loved the cartoon fight version between Dean and the bad guy! But I admit I was disappointed in the actual animation of the mindscape. They pimped it so much I expected a real feast. But it was funny and enjoyable -

Angels resurrected Amelia's husband, I bet. Sort of the current version of YED burning Jessica? Except this is the angelic version of force Sam back on the road for their own purposes. Though I ca see an argument for those that think Sam had a breakdown and is imagining Amelia. But then, there is the spoiler that we'll see her in real time.

So it's interesting to see what Dabb did on his own. Can't wait to see the other half's work. I did notice the usual indifference to human death - I don't understand why he killed the crook. Prison isn't good enough? It reminds me of Amy - it was ok to kill as long as it was killing drug adicts. I really hate that SPN, which was so dedicated to eveyr life having worth, now so casually kills. Dabb & Loflin were responsible for 8-2 where the demon hosts were so casually killed too.

the flashbacks worked more oh yeh and must say ;~) sammy looked hot in the flashback ..still though she seems like she's somewhere else all the time ...nd yeh the dad was a good actor , i started tearing up i must admit when sam talked about dean i think he's lying about something , maby he did look for dean (but thats me still hopying)...the effects wicked!!!!!! lol 10/10 ep for me ...Much better than the french mistake to me ... A douno what a like better that or changing channels :/..Cas to me felt like the old cass the cass i loved he's just to cute ..It all worked for me :)

  10. No, it wasn't. It was a reward to Cas. But I still didn't like it. I laughed out loud when Sam shoved Cas aside.

  13. I was not disappointed at all, loved the cat. lol More tomorrow after I watch again with CC.

    ReplyDelete
  14. That scene of Sam pushing Cas off the was hilarious. And this is the first time I saw the possibility that Sam really is imagining Amelia. There were alot of lines that sure hinted that way, if it's not literal.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I can not get the other comments to show up on any page.

  16. Not my type of humor, but I know humor really varies from person to person. I really didn't care for this at all.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I see it as a slap to the face for Sam. Dean is making very sure that Sam knows that everyone is a better brother than Sam is.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Btw I believe that this season's special effects are the best ever!!No other season had such cool effects.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think they run into a police issue since they've already worked with the police in that town. I see your point and thought they could have come up with some cartoonish "cement shoes" so Dean could leave a note pinned on him like Spider-Man.

Really like the idea of angels jumping right back into the "dicks with wings" pool. Maybe heaven has been restored in Cas' absence.Maybe they're working with demons about getting the tablets. Looks like not too much movement on the myth arc until January.

Excellent episode and I'll have that cast iron skillet with Dean's mug splattered across it for quite some time.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Just speculating: I'm really wondering about those flasbacks. I'm starting to think the angels made Sam dream up his life with Amelia, until they could get Dean - through their using Benny - out of purgatory. So Sam & Dean could unite to go on the Word quest, secretly doing the angels' bidding through Castiel. Or some such stuff.

Don being alive, is probably why Sam leaves Amelia in the middle of the night - right when Dean is there waiting at the cabin. Only angels could coordinate all that so conveniently. I bet Benny, out of guilt and loyalty to Dean, eventually spills the beans.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't believe that is the intention of the writer at all. It was a throw away line at the end, but I do think the audience can choose to interpret it how they want. I do think that issue will be brought up front intentionally next week though.

Sorry my bad read wrong lol tired ...soz

    ReplyDelete
  23. ..the hypothesis sound little bit crazy but feasible

    ReplyDelete
  24. I disagree, but I will say Dabb really should have given that line to Sam. Then it wouldn't have just been a throw away joke, but a meaningful moment between Sam & Cas.

    ReplyDelete
  25. ..WHY write the commentary..???..you will keep it like a mental thoughts opinion

  28. I absolutely loved this episode. I think we may have come closer to understanding Sam. What Sam said to the old man at the end spoke volumes and made me think this was what Sam had been dong. Everything was a tool of escape from things he couldn't cope with. The advice he gave was good advice and he needed to hear it.

I love that Dean sat down and said talk to me to Cas. Cas, bless his heart, opened up. That was so good. Now Dean needs to do the same to his brother. Dean even doing this was a major change in him. It was a healing change.

I so loved the cartoon references and scenes. This, by far, was the most enjoyable episode in ages.

    ReplyDelete
  29. That would have been great.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Because this is a place for saying why we did nor didn't like the episode and I said why I didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Is it just me or if you stare at Amelia's face she starts to look like Achmed from The Jeff Dunham Show?

    ReplyDelete
  32. It could happen. I will say thus far we have seen more loyalty from Dean to Benny than from Benny to Dean. Yes, Benny helped Dean in Purgatory, but Dean was his ride out, so his motives were mixed at best. Since then we have seen Dean trust in Benny and go to help him, but not much from Benny's side. Benny may well be a good friend and loyal to Dean, but I'm not quite willing to jump to the conclusion that he would feel guilty about lying to Dean quite yet.

  33. *shrugs* All have different tastes. Like I don't like "The French Mistake" all that much and hated Becky when she was all fan crazy. And the convention episode. Just way too meta for me. Chuck (I liked Chuck) and the novels were my line where I didn't mind a little meta, and then the writers crossed it. :I

I like the cartoon thing better than meta, and the fairy episode. But nothing compares to the Trickster/Gabriel comedy stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Elena Wonderland wasn't talking about Dean...Don is Amelia's thought-to-be-dead husband, who is somehow alive after all.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Most definitely a polarizing episode. I always liked the Saturday morning cartoons and slapstick humor. It is perfectly fine to dislike this. I'm kind of interested to see how many people will want to argue with you about your choice!

  39. I don't think the angels jumped back into the "dick with wings" pool. I mean, when has Upper Management ever gotten out of it? lol Seems most angels that end up being boss go all...bossy, and shady. Corrupt with their plans. Mmmm Upper Management is like most politicians. lol

    ReplyDelete
  40. The episode met my expectations. I knew it was going to be a good comedy episode after seeing the promos and sneak peek. Before that, I hadn't been so optimistic, but unlike "Bitten" this episode totally went so much better than I thought it would when I read they were doing a cartoon episode.

Favorite cartoony stuff: The pan to Dean's face (lmao) and the cat talking, saying "dumbass". XD What did Castiel say to him? lol

Having Cas back to being his lost-in-human-world self was so cute and funny. I love clueless Cas. XD

Some of the angel stuff like being to smell like EVERYTHING was hilarious too, Cas was sniffing like a bloodhound. lol It's the brothers reactions to Castiel's techniques that crack me up even more.

Like their faces when Cas said he'd interrogate the cat. WTH? Does this mean SPN angels can understand animal language too (I've heard of it in some mythology) or is it because they knew loony cat could talk?

The third wheel thing was funny, and Sam pushing Castiel to get to the front seat. lol Well, you wanted to be the 3rd wheel Cas, can't expect to be any more.

I like these types of comedy episodes that mix serious stuff in it too. Poor Sam and Cas.

Amelia's father I found to be mean to Sam. He was rude about John too (not to mention marines in general!). Glad Amelia talked with him, got him to give Sam a chance. (BTW, wasn't that the same guy that acted as the worker at the airport in "Phantom Traveler" that called Dean about the plane crashes? I'm pretty sure...)

Can't believe Don is alive! Makes me wonder if it's just Sam's bad luck or if someone brought Don back or something. (So many theories!) I'm really anxious to find out.

I love Dean getting Castiel to talk. He's been a real good friend to Cas this season. :)

I was stunned when Cas said if he went to Heaven and saw the damage his past acts had done, he'd kill himself. But when I think about how guilty he's been feeling and that, it's really not surprising that he's been so depressed to go into that mind frame. :(

When Sam gave that speech to the old man I think that's when Cas decided he'd go to Heaven to fix things, but then Naomi had to go and stop him. It's a weird thing. So Cas doesn't remember her outside of that room, but when he returns to it, he does. And she manages to change his mind without him remembering?

So Cas took the old man's abilities, so there will be no more issues with that anymore. That was a nice ending Cas staying behind and sitting next to the guy with the music playing in his head.

    ReplyDelete
  41. That wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but parts of it were thoroughly enjoyable. The case with the cartoon deaths was actually pretty interesting and I loved the Winchesters interaction with Cas and his attempts to be helpful. It was obvious Castiel was simply spinning, trying to find something to keep him occupied, but it was still interesting the way Dean and Sam reacted to him. Of course, it also emphasized the fact that too muuch dramatic tension is taken away with Cas along since he can 'smell' and sense all problems and fix things at the wave of a magic hand. It makes the show less human and less interesting. It's a good thing he stayed with Fred, because he makes it way too easy. His use as comic relief this week was done well and understated. Cas calling shotgun was funny and Sam muscling him aside was even funnier. :) That scene was very well done.

Speaking of Fred, not much of a part for Mike Farrell, but still he was enjoyable. It's nice they tied him into John's past, but it was kind of a random coincidence. Still, it was nice to see BJ Hunnicut on screen again. :)

I loved the looney tunes fight scene. Very well played, and the doctor villain was believable. That he knew enough about Fred's magic to just come up with a huge frying pan was hilarious. All in all, I did love the case, and even Castiel's dramatic moments were well done. To be honest, I did roll my eyes everytime they cut to Sam's flashback, tho. Maybe he went a little nuts and imagined Amelia, but I don't think so, (she was there when he walked away to meet Dean in the middle of the night) so I'm not sure where they're going with this, but I can't see the point of spending half the episode meeting her dad and bonding. Really didn't contribute to anything as far as I can see. If they want us to understand what Sam went through -- and make his not looking for Dean make some kind of sense -- I think they really need to start showing us because I'm to the point where I really don't care. The character of Amelia is not appealing in the least (at least in my opinion), so if they have a point to make, I wish they'd make it and move on from there. Normally I'm pretty patient in allowing the story to unfold, but this golden flashback stuff is just getting painful to watch.

So I could only five it an OK. Half was well done and humorous -- although I'll admit I expected more funny stuff than we got -- and half was pointless to me (that may change in the future, but for now I'm not seeing it). Next week we're back with Benny and action, so I think I'll enjoy that a bit more.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I didn't catch that line. He must have said that because guess he's still a bit angry with Sam.

Or he was just trying to be nice, and didn't mean anything by it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ha! You're right!! At least Achmed doesn't have that horrible head of hair. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I don't think so. The angels didn't seem to even know Dean and Castiel were in Purgatory until Dean told Samandriel right before the auction. Dean was already out and it was after that the angels rescued Cas. So, no, it doesn't seem like they had anything to do with Benny or Dean getting out.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I can only come to the conclusion that Loflin has been dragging Dabb down this whole time. The episode had a good balance of serious and humourous moments, and gave me a good amount of both Sam and Castiel feels. I continue to be in awe over the degree to which Dean and Cas are communicating. A solid episode all around.

    ReplyDelete
  46. You're right. And that's what makes tossing around ideas here a blast. I know I can count on many people catching things I don't and it lets me look at it a different way on a rewatch. The only part of Becky I could stand was at the motel door where she put her hand on Sam's chest and his subsequent reaction.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I thought Amelia's dad was way more likeable and realistic than Amelia. And yes, I do believe he was the guy back in Phantom Traveler! Good eye!! Sam's speech to the old man was the equivalent of an anvil. :) Too ad it's too late to take his own advice.

But I do agree that it's the boys' reactions to Cas that make it funny. Without those spot on reactions, I don't think I'd laugh much. I actually liked Cas in this one. He was actually an integral part of the case and they didn't resort to using him for cheap comic relief. I liked that, but I'm glad he's not going to be a 'third wheel' in the Impala. It would make the boys' way to bullet proof and where's the drama in that?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I don't care for Amelia either but the writers HAVE TO let us know how Sam knew to get up that night and go to the cabin. (Was that Don in the shadows?) And I think Amelia would be the best hello/goodbye point to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yep. We've been blaming the team when maybe it was only one-half. But it's hard to tell with one episode.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yeah, definitely. I expected that though. I knew the writers wouldn't keep him constantly with the brothers because of that. He'll probably do some hunts by himself now that he's learned not to yell at widows. lol

With Naomi though, he will still be around. She'll make sure Cas does check on the brothers often enough, if he himself doesn't do so enough to her satisfaction. :I

    ReplyDelete
  51. Overall I liked it. I laughed through a lot of it, and I liked all of the characters this week.

I enjoyed the present more than the past. Best line was from Cas: "I'll interrogate the cat" (or something like that). I liked the shots aimed at the fandom: Cas - "I'm going to be the third wheel" (again quoting from a bad memory) with Sam blocking him from taking his spot riding shotgun.

The flashbacks weren't working for me. To start there was a really weird transition with the first one. I can't remember the line the proceeded it now, but it didn't fit. Sam and Amelia still don't have chemistry. Sam has been paired with what - have a dozen or a dozen women by now? And he's had better chemistry with all of them than with Amelia - even the old woman from the ghost ship episode.

The father got a little too familiar too fast - not very realistic - and I found myself bored with most of that drama. I hope this is leading somewhere interesting, like maybe after Sam lost Amelia he went and did something drastic to rescue Dean.

One comment about the characterization - I was thinking about this, and I don't think they introduced the "Sam runs" idea until season 5. I think it was introduced by Carver in the Free to Be episode by Lucifer. It was later picked up by Dobb and Loflin in the Heaven flashbacks. Prior to that, Sam sometimes took off, but it was always portrayed as Sam leaving to find answers or follow his own path - not Sam trying to avoid something. Am I wrong on this?

But overall, I liked it and voted "great."

    ReplyDelete
  52. Sam took off in "Good God Y'all". I see the difference you're talking about, but not sure if the writers are that specific about him running.

    ReplyDelete
  53. It would be nice if they'd just let us know how Dean finally contacted Sam and let it move from there. A last goodbye or something would make sense, but all these flashbacks with meeting her dad? I completely missed the point of that apparently. She's just not adding anything to the show and these flashbacks are really getting hard to watch. I hope there's a point made soon, that's all I can hope for.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yes, it was a reward for Cas. Dean rewarded Cas by offering him Sam's place. A place that Sam had physically defended earlier. So it was definitely a slap in the face.

    ReplyDelete
  55. it was OK! funny! sad! thats it I guess not much to say anymore just on to the next ep lets see how this will turn out.

    ReplyDelete
  56. You have every right to express your opinion whether people agree with it or not. So keep right on giving your honest opinion because some of us respect that honesty. Some people will hit the little down button as if that should make you feel bad. :) I don't agree with a lot of people's opinions on these boards, but that's my right. I still would never hit a down button. I consider it rude, but to each their own.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Yes, Castiel said he comforted the pig before killing it. It was in the episode where he makes a sandwich for Dean which is free from the leviathans goo.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I've gotta admit I really enjoyed this one, it was a very funny episode.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Not everybody has to be happy with what the writers are doing just because its Castiel or anybody else. Personally this season I have found the writing a little too EDGish for my taste esp with Sam.

    ReplyDelete
  60. The end was adorable! Cas just sitting in a chair next to the old man, listening to classical music, with a serene smile on his face.....
I don't get why he didn't seem so upset/confused this time when he was pulled back into Niaomi's office though....

    ReplyDelete
  61. They make it so he has no recollection of being there. They call him up when they want him, get information on the Winchesters and send him back.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I just wow-ed at SPN fans. they are still remember for the cameo who appeared on one episode only, even on season 1!!! At least I found five fangirls who realize it. LoL

    ReplyDelete
  63. I was wondering how many more levels of angels there are. Cas is a Seraph and Molly Ringwald or whatever her name is is at least a pay grade above Cas. So you've got archangels and god, I guess. I suppose she could be Metatron since the whole operation she is involved in is about the tablets. She would have written them and would play a major part in casting the spell and maybe circumventing any angelproofing that was written in.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Why write your commentary? This thread is called "What did you think of...", not "Why did you love the episode?"

I'm a Supernatural fan for yeeears now but I have seen no other series (besides Lost maybe) where so many fans take criticism personally or get outright dismissive if you utter one negative word about anything. Calm down for heaven's sake and enjoy the series if you do, but let others voice their opinion even if it's not the same as yours.

Not everyone loves everything about every Supernatural episode just because it's Supernatural or because awww the guys are so cute.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Another pretty good episode. 2 weeks in a row too, not since Season 7 premiere has there been something like that. There were a lot of jokes, and Cas was the main source of a lot of them. Cas as a hunter was hilarious, and I was glad to see Sam and Dean actually act like brothers for once.

    ReplyDelete
  66. That shotgun scene reminded me of the of The French Mistake in season 6, when Misha in that reality was trying "fit in" with the Jensen and Jared and they just blew him off, even though they knew he wasn't Cas, but still reminded me that Cas tried and wouldn't be allowed to fit in, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Naomi is played by Amanda Tapping from Sanctuary.

    ReplyDelete
  68. That is not what was said, Cas asked if he could at least ride in the front seat and both Dean and Sam said NO, then Sam moved Cas out of the wayj.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yeah, but that decision made sense to me. Sam was having trouble managing his addiction at a time when things looked really bleak. His reasoning in that episode was that he was worried that his issues were distracting Dean from their fight, and I thought he also wanted to distance himself from demons. It seemed responsible to me. If you are struggling with alcoholism, you leave the bar until you can handle it. It wasn't until the next episode (Free to Be) that his decision was framed as the latest of a series of times when Sam ran to avoid his problems.

I don't want to bash Carver. I loved a lot of his earlier episodes. I'm just noting that the "Sam runs" characteristic is in direct conflict with how he was portrayed in earlier seasons as being the one who usually pushed to face things head on (sometimes impetuously) while Dean avoided, and it may be one of the reasons why there is so much turmoil in the Sam fandom. This just isn't how a lot of people see Sam.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'm apparently in the minority in this in that I think they've have a pretty strong track record. There have been a few misses here and there but that is true with all of the writers.

    ReplyDelete
  71. according to the spoilers Sam never got a message from Dean and there in lies the mystery

-why did Sam show up at the cabin?

-why did he leave Amelia in the middle of the night?

-who was standing outside the house when he left?
Its pretty clear to a lot of the fandom that there is a point to this storyline

    ReplyDelete
  72. Still, he had already taken off. That's all I'm saying. All Carver did was make more sense of it.

  75. Been there, done that, still won't work..Worked find yesterday until I went to do the how did you like this ep, then nada. Since it works great in Chrome, no problem. lol

  76. LOL, that was the best scene of Becky for me, I just wondered how many fan girls out there would not LOVE to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  77. @rehabber:disqus Do you have any Addons installed in FF?

    ReplyDelete
  78. I laughed at the first, when Cas wanted to ride in the front and both guys said NO, but I don't think it was a slap at Sam at the end. Cas had done several good things in the ep and it was just a small reward. Sam did not look upset.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yes, but nothing changed from yesterday morning when it was working and last night when it was not. Also where you sign up for emails when new comments are made was also different last night. Just figured an upgrade was done. I will try FF again later today as I like it better than Chrome, but for now Chrome is working great.

  85. Don't remember the episode or season (one, maybe? definitely no later than two), but the first time Sam met Meg, it was when he'd bailed on Dean for a while, and that was way before Demon blood addiction time.

  86. That was the scare crow ep, met her on the side of the road.

  87. Sam's left before, but my point was that in the past it wasn't to avoid conflict or a case of him running away from his problems. In that case, Sam wanted to find his father in California so that he could join him in hunting YED, rather than being sidelined in that fight.

:) thanks lol am a dope

  89. actaully sam wanted to go look for their dad and dean wanted to do the job, sam said he would go on his own and dean drove of without him so technically Sam didnt bail on Dean

  90. Oooh brilliant! I love the cement shoes idea. lol They really missed out with that.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Good point. I forgot that moment when he asked where's Cas. The rescue of Cas by the angels must have happened after that.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Yes, I think Benny's reference to "they" was the angels showing him the way out somehow, and then siccing him on Dean. At first, Benny is clearly about getting out for his own revenge purpose. But the loyalty of Dean through everything, including whatever happens in 8-9 may shake him up to return that loyalty.
I hope so, because it's a nice twist to the Ruby betrayal redux that seems to be happening again. And it means we would get to keep Benny as an interesting character after it all resolves. [And I hope Amelia ends up more than a Lisa redux as well.]

  93. God yes! I hope so much that Dean eventually sits down for a real talk with Sam, and Sam with Dean. So desperately needed.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I gave the episode an OK, just like most of the previous episodes.

I don't know if the problem is with the show or with me. I'd guess it's the latter since Season 8 turned out so much more different than what I had been anticipating and some of the things they have done, such as having Cas ride shotgun in the Impala as a "hunter" and the whole Amelia thing, don't sit quite well with me.

Maybe I need to start the season all over again and try to watch it with a fresh pair of eyes.

that was definitely a fantastic awsome episode. The story, the comedy it was all great and Castiel is the bomb. SUpernatural is at its best with Cas involved. God its awsome and nice seeing Amanda back as Naomi but im kinda getting tired of those brief meetings i want to know what is going on!

  97. I get that it was a joke and the writer probably meant it as a throw away line. But in regards to character development for this season, it was a continuation of Dean "replacing" Sam with just about anyone. To offer up Sam's spot was insulting to Sam especially since Sam made clear shotgun was HIS spot.

    ReplyDelete
  98. At the end of the episode Dean offered Cas shotgun - right in front of Sam

    ReplyDelete
  99. Exactly! I am always stunned that this incident is used as an example of Sam abandoning Dean. They had a difference of opinion and different goals. The car belonged to Dean. He took it with him when he drove off and left Sam by the side of the road. Sam has a right to make his own decisions and if he wanted to go someplace other than where Dean wanted to go then he has the right. I'm not bashing Dean either. He had a right to drive off.

    ReplyDelete
  100. They reused the guy from season 1 phantom traveler Jerry Pinaski the guy with the poltergeist thing he was playing Sams girl Emila he has been popping up a lot in movies and t v shows like Continuum

    ReplyDelete
  101. I feel the same way. I have voted OK most of the time this season. I cannot vote awesome until I know what the rationale is for Sam's OOC behavior. My ultimate enjoyment of the show is contingent upon how they resolve that issue. If they have a believable explanation for his not looking for Dean or helping Kevin then I will reevaluate how I see the season. Until then, I am in a holding pattern. It saddens me that I've become so distrustful of TPTB.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I agree. The Leviathan entrance in Purgatory is a particular favorite of mine.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I guess the first question doesn't really matter, I mean after he left Amelia I guess he just didn't have any place to go expect the cabin and I guess it was the same thing for Dean (and/or Dean thought Sam was going to be there and/or would show there eventually)

    ReplyDelete
  105. It's not so much the strength of their writing in general that I find to be the problem. It's that the levels of sexism/racism/ableism/general denial of agency to non-Winchesters always seems to be the worst in Dabb and Loflin episodes. There was some ableism in this episode, but it wasn't scene after scene of offensiveness like, for example, "Sam,Interrupted" was.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Honestly, I would like to see it go. I can't help but think it just breeds negativity. And there's enough of that here already. :)

    ReplyDelete
  107. I need more info. I don't know what you're saying, or how it applies anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  108. It's true that Carver was picking up a thread that had been started in the previous episode. But it's also true that Free to Be was the first episode that made it canon that Sam has a habit of dealing with conflict by running. The previous episode had shown Sam taking reasonable steps to deal with an addiction.

I don't know whether this was Caver's idea, or Kripke's, or Gamble's, or Merle the janitor's. My original point was that the the writers seem to building the reasoning behind "Sam didn't look for Dean" as "Sam runs when faced with trauma." And that pattern of behavior didn't exist before season 5, so that's probably why the fandom is so divided on the issue.

    ReplyDelete
  109. great episode. just enjoyable, funny and entertaining. i miss laughing during supernatural.
i thought some parts with cas just felt a bit off and i'm happy he won't be "hunting" soon (as far as i think) but i thought the plot was great and the case was new and interesting and i loved all the cartoon references. and cas calling bugs bunny a "insect rabbit monster" or something along those lines.

    really enjoyed this episode

    ReplyDelete
  110. That is my thoughts also on the arrow, I don't get offended by them, just means a difference of opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Even Dean told Sam "All you ever do is run" and Sam told him "and I was wrong every time." Sam was trying to follow a path in life he wanted, but was seen as "running" from the family business since the pilot.

    ReplyDelete
  112. But the quote you used here is from season five or later, correct? This was a retcon introduced in season 5. Was Sam pursuing his dream at Stanford running? You can look at it that way, but if that's true any kid who chooses a different life for himself than the one their parent wants for him is a "runner." Sam's decision to go to Stanford wasn't portrayed as Sam running from his problems, it was shown as him wanting a different kind of life than that of a hunter.

    ReplyDelete
  113. That writing was unfair IMO from Carver because Sam wasnt wrong every time. He wasnt wrong to go to Stanford and both in Scarecrow and Hunted he had reasons and he wasnt running from but too. The show shifts things with Sam to fit a certain sl. I never have really regarded Sam has a 'runner'.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I agree with you that Sam just wanted a different life, and kids should never be made to toe the family line, but the writers have made it seem like it is running. I feel for Sam most of the time, but the running with the demon blood was totally different. That is one of the reasons I love this show, I have grown to love both brothers and can feel for them and have cried and laughed with them to many times to count. I can scream at the TV when they are doing wrong, but it happens with both Sam and Dean and since season 4 at Castiel. No one can call me a Dean or Sam girl, did not even vote in that poll of who I like best. lol

    ReplyDelete
  115. I think you're misunderstanding me. I don't have a problem with Sam or any other character having flaws. I think Sam in the earlier seasons was a little stubborn and impetuous.

My point here is that the Sam we were shown for the first four seasons didn't run from his problems. In fact, it was the opposite. He was much more likely to want to confront them than Dean was. In season 5, the writers (mostly Carver and a little Dabb and Loflin) started telling us that Sam deals with problems by running from them. Now it appears they've based the rationale behind the very controversial decision to have Sam not look for Sam on "Sam deals with conflict by running." That just doesn't feel right to me because this character trait has always been flimsy at best. We were told it exists from season 5 on, but never shown it. What we've been shown throughout the series has been the opposite.

    ReplyDelete
  116. The idea that Sam was wrong to want to go to Stanford implies it is wrong to question hunting and revenge as life choices. If that's true, than John has been the only right character in this show, and Sam, Dean, and Bobby have been wrong through most of it.

In Scarecrow, Sam was trying to get back into the fight with YED. And in the end, the right choice was to confront YED directly.

In Hunted, Sam wanted answers whereas Dean wanted to run away to Amsterdam - again, not a wrong choice. Sam and Dean needed to find out what they were up against, because wish as they might, YED was not just going to go away.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I am AGREEING with you, do not think I have misunderstood you at all. lol

    ReplyDelete
  118. Well he wasn't just a cameo, he had more than a few minutes playing that character Jerry in Phantom Traveler.

    ReplyDelete
  119. That would have been perfect. I had enjoyed most of the episode until that part. 5x22 makes it sound like the Impala is basically a "home" to both of the brothers, but there are way too many examples where we see signs that Sam is just a guest in Dean's home. Yes, we know how much the car means to Dean. It means waaaaay more to Dean than it does to Sam. It is Dean's car. But, knocking Sam to the back seat without his permission is a really low blow IMO. I have been trying to find a comparison in my own life, but I just can't come up with one. The closest I could find would be my husband letting the neighbor sleep in my bed

  121. Anyone else see the old lady that ate the "Hansel & Gretel" couple in season 3? She was in the old folk's home...

  122. Beevus & Butthead impression: "Dean said 'Talk to me.' THAT was refreshing. :-) Can we stick to the idea that Dean has grown?

I really enjoyed the MOW story. It was interesting and fun. The Sam flashback...sigh...two overriding thoughts. (1) Why are you wasting my time with this? and (2) If there is a point to this GET TO IT ALREADY. please?!?!?

I'm trying to remember which show from my youth...MASH! That was it!...the guy played Fred Jones was on.

Sigh. I'm not sure how to vote. The main story was awesome (poor Cas) but that flashback was...gah!

  125. I found this post in another forum (thewinchesterfamilybusiness.com) which I found pretty interesting:
(btw, I am the only one who wants Sam's physic powers to come back?)

    From #kaj:

"My brain has short-circuited and somehow end up with this (Quoting #sweetondean):
As he said to Dean, “I know I can’t run any more.” So he decides that he
must face Heaven, what he did and the outcome of his actions. But Naomi
has other ideas and zaps him out mid-sentence to tell him no…you can’t
come back to Heaven. You’ve got to wonder why? Why does she need to keep
    him earth bound."

Let's turn around the perspective, shall we.
Earlier in the episode Dean said to Cas, "Listen to Sam" and while Sam gives speech to Fred Cas listens. Then he realize that he can't run but Naomi sabotage his intent to return to heaven. What if this also happens to Sam.

Imagine Sam who has decided early on that he can't run, he needs to look for Dean, then somehow his intent is averted over and over again by other forces, just like what Naomi do to
Cas. What if what happens to Cas right now has happened to Sam a year ago.

    Example :
"The rules are simple, don't take a joint from a guy named Don..."
Reveal : It had happened before with Sam by taking a 'joint' from supposedly dead Don

    Dean
taking two beer bottles and opens it and giving it to Sam. Weirdly it
happen present time, why would this be called remembering?
Reveal : It happened before with Amelia's dad.

Dean's back from war-like zone Purgatory. Dean's supposed to be dead.
Reveal : It happened before with Don coming back from war. He was supposed to be back.

Sam's fixing the vents and fan
Reveal : It happened before that Sam has to fix the vents and fan of the motel.

Could be that we should see these FB as not a memory but if we place ourselves in Sam's place a year ago. These FBs are foreshadowing things that's gonna happen in future. Sam's not walking the memory lane but having a deja vu experience.

I had a dream of visiting some place that I have never visited before but since it was a dream I
ignored it. Then, few weeks later I went to some place that looks exactly like in my dream. OMG I've been here before, in my dream.

Edit to add because I am on a roll :

This also explain why Sam knows that Dean's gonna visit Rufus' cabin.

This also explain Sam's dialogue : "I don't have to Dean, I know it's you."

This also explain why Sam suddenly knows how to use the inverted exorcism because he was prepared before.

This also explain why Sam's so adamant to ask Kevin where is the tablet. Just like he knew before about it.

Also explain why Sam so concerns about Cas the first time he meet Dean because he has seen the sign about it before.

The FB is not merely a flashback but a clue for Sam.
Could it be that Sam's psychic Vision is coming back?

    (end of post)
