The NCIS hierarchy will be fleshed out some when viewers meet Jerome Craig, the deputy director who serves under Vance.

And playing the potentially recurring role, TVLine has learned exclusively, will be Greg Germann.

“I’ve been a big fan of Greg’s going back to Ally McBeal and [the mid-'90s legal drama] Sweet Justice, and he’s a gifted actor with incredible timing and a wonderful sense of humor,” NCIS showrunner Gary Glasberg tells TVLine. “Playing the NCIS Deputy Director means carrying a lot of weight on his shoulders. He’s really going to bring the character of Jerome Craig to life.”

  1. So NCIS has an Assistant Director (Owen Granger) and a Deputy Director? Isn't that essentially the same job?

  2. Assistant Directors are subordinate to the Director and Deputy Director. The Assistant Directors oversee the bureaus within NCIS including Administration, Atlantic, Pacific and Global Operations etc.

  3. Problem is thou, Vance (current NCIS Director), was an Assistant Director before assuming the post after Director Shepherd's death. Not a Deputy Director. I always assumed after seeing Assistant Director Granger on NCIS:LA, that Granger would be the likely replacement if Vance retires or is killed off.

  4. Generally when the post of Deputy Director is vacant the senior assistant director fulfills the responsibilities of the Deputy Director. I always assumed that this was what occurred to promote Vance or alternatively that the Deputy Director declined promotion.
