Covert Affairs-- Season Finale: 10 non-spoilerish takeaways

18 Nov 2012

I'm just going to say it: the season 3 finale of Covert Affairs--set to air this tuesday, November 20--is by far my favorite episode of the season.  In fact, it may just be my favorite episode of the entire series.  The finale, titled Lady Stardust, got this description from USA Network:  When a fellow spy is taken hostage, Annie travels to Amsterdam to eliminate Khalid once and for all.
I was lucky enough to have the chance to watch the episode in advance, and believe me, if you're a fan of the show, this is not an episode you want to miss.  Here are my 10 (mostly) non-spoilerish takeaways.  And let me tell you, this was a hard list to come up with, because there is so much about this episode I would love to share and spoil.  But here goes:

1. In order to meet Kahlid's randsom demands, Annie has to go to some rather painful extremes.

2.  Augggie pops up when you--and Annie-- least expect him.

3.  Auggie's pattern of seeming to have an old friend in practically every city comes in useful.

4.  The hostage/randsom exchange does NOT go as you might expect.

5.  Arthur and Joan put in a phone call to Annie, causing an interruption that will make you groan.

6.  At some point in the episode, Annie makes a seemingly reckless decision--but not for the reasons you think.

8.  There's a hint--but just a hint--of a new mission for Annie for next season, coming from a surprising source.

9.  Auggie really is Annie's rock.  They've been growing steadily closer over the last 3 seasons, but this episode really showcases how deep and strong their friendship is.  And speaking of . . .

10.  It may not be strictly-speaking true that Auggie and Annie have "that talk" as teased here.  But I think it's safe to say that after this episode, their relationship will never be the same.

Questions?  Hit the comments, and I'll try to non-spoilerishly answer.

  4. "Arthur and Joan put in a phone call to Annie, causing an interruption that will make you groan." Meaning they are going to interrupt the kiss ¬¬

  5. I'm being a bit spoilery, but . . . don't worry, the interruption is mid-episode, not the end. :-)

  7. even if auggie and annie happen, which i want, i feel like it too soon just because Annie simion Love situatuon not so long ago. same with Auggie pre wife thing. only justification if it shit happens and its permanent? like together they would have to admit they liked eachother before the incidents thsi season.

  8. What about Eyal's fans and Annie and Eyal shippers? Will we cry or be happy after the season finale?

  9. Hmmm . . . a bit of both, I'd say.

  10. The timing issue is addressed, somewhat, anyway.

  11. why will we cry and be happy?

  12. Sorry, can't say too much without completely spoiling. They have a really nice scene towards the end of the episode, if that helps.

  13. any hints/spoilers on whether Eyal will be joining cia?

    ReplyDelete
  14. any hints on the "two life changing events"?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Not really. I wouldn't say the door is closed, but it doesn't really come up.

  16. There are so many major events in this episode that honestly even after watching the episode twice, I'm not even sure which 2 the promo was referring to. We definitely see Annie as more hard-edged and intent on justice in this episode. And she's more honest with herself & others about her feelings

  17. Ok I'm going to make some guesses tell me if I'm hot or cold. For the record, I make guesses about TV shows and I'm ALWAYS wrong.

You mentioned something groan-worthy will happen by the middle of the episode, and that Eyal fans will be both happy and sad. I'm guessing that Annie manages to save Eyal about halfway through the episode and they have a moment, maybe a kiss I don't know, and Annie gets a call before it leads anywhere.

Then later on, probably near the end of the episode, Annie has some kind of talk with Eyal before heading home. In the trailer it clearly showed Annie and Auggie at her house when they were leaning in, not at her or his apartment. You mentioned that the call doesn't come in and interrupt them, so I'm guessing they kiss and the episode ends there on a cliffhanger, so they don't really get the chance to talk.

  18. Let's see . . . don't want to completely spoil the episode for you, but I'd say you're about 75% hot and 25% cold? ;-)

  19. Where is 7?

    1,2,3,4,5,6,...,8,9,10.

  20. any hints on a possible annie/eyal romance?

    ReplyDelete
  21. It's still possible, I think. This episode definitely shows how much they care about each other.

  22. i bet there is a dream sequence?

  23. I like Auggie but since first meeting Eyal back in "No Quarter" I have loved the growing relationship with Eyal and Annie. Their relationship has become so layered and complex that it screams to be the end game. It does not need to happen yet but it needs to keep building towards that goal.
Auggie seems so young and I really do feel that Annie has outgrown him. I see more and more people are jumping on the Eyal train and I am happy about that.

  24. Sounds so amazing! Feel like I can't wait. It better be worth it because I'm pushing it by staying up so late. Lol.

  25. Whatever happens between Auggie and Annie (romance or not) at the end of the episode, will this assignment in Amsterdam be a positive step for them?

    ReplyDelete
  26. This episode will change their relationship in a good way, right?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Depends on your perspective, I guess, but I would say so. :)

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think it's worth it--hope you wind up thinking so, too! :)

  29. Argh, can't really say too much without spoiling. Let's just say I don't think you need worry for the near-future, it's just that who knows what the show's writers may come up with next season?
