I've been given the wonderful opportunity of asking Castle and Last Resort composer Robert Duncan a few questions as part of an email interview for SpoilerTV, so in due course I think it's a great opportunity for the SpoilerTV readers and fans of both shows to have a bit of input, and suggest some questions for me to ask, because thinking of really good questions to ask a composer, as opposed to a writer or executive producer, is actually quite tricky
At the end of the day, I'll have the final say as to what I ask, but you're most welcome to submit a question in the comments. I'm looking for questions that aren't necessarily related to the shows Robert works on, because I have them mostly covered, but questions that are about Robert's career or the industry (as examples), and that are descriptive and open ended, and that haven't been asked before are what I'm leaning towards.
To keep things simple and easy to follow, post your questions in the comments below. If fellow readers like the question, they can click the UP arrow below it, thus simulating a 'vote' in favor of that question. Again, no guarantees it makes it into the final list of questions, but it gives me a really good idea of the stuff you're keen to learn about
If you prefer a more private submission, tweet me @JimmyRyanNZ or use the contact form on my website, www.seriesmonitor.com

oooh cool interview.
ReplyDeleteHere are some question.
1) Looking back at your career that ranges from Tru Calling, The Unit, Lie to Me up to Castle and Last Resort, which of those shows are you personal favourites to a) Watch and b) compose for
2) Which other shows (that you've not worked on) do you enjoy the Musical scores for currently and in the past.
3) What bands/musical influences do you draw from.
4) What's been you favourite scene that you've composed from?
5) Which scene proved the hardest to write for?
6) How long does it take you to score a typical episode
7) Which other composer would you like to work with?
Any chance of commercial relese of Castle score?
ReplyDeleteOh! I would like that!
ReplyDeleteGreat Questions!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, let me tell you how much I love and appreciate the work you do on Castle. Fabulous score! So many great emotional themes as well as funny ones that become so memorable and addictive (for ex., "Castle's theme song", the score in the shooting room from season 1, the ironic score for Eye of the Beholder, etc. etc.) You are incredibly talented, Sir, keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteAnd here's my question:
On Castle, you use some exotic intruments' voices, for ex., the sound of duduk (Armenian double reed wind instrument) in creating the "Beckett's mother" theme. Did you use the original instrument for this melody, or was it computer generated? And if the sound is live, do you play some of these intruments yourself or collaborate with other musicians who play them?
Thank you.
ReplyDeleteNot a question, just a comment... His compositions "the Final Fight" (in the last episode of Buffy) and "I Just Want You" (in the S4 finale of Castle) are two of the most uplifting, inspirational-on-a-bad-day pieces of music you could ever listen to. They will NEVER leave my ipod!!
ReplyDeleteAre you going to release a Castle original score soundtrack on, for example, iTunes any time soon?
