Supernatural - Season 8 - Interview with Jared Padalecki

Thanks to Percysowner for the heads up.

This week marks the fifth episode of Season 8 of "Supernatural," and we still have a lot of unanswered questions lingering from the season premiere. In the first episode, we saw Sam abandon a serious love interest (and his dog) in the middle of the night to return to Rufus' cabin. However, we still don't know why he left her behind.

"We do find that out," Jared Padalecki told us when we visited him on set during filming of the upcoming episode "Citizen Fang." "That's actually one of the cruxes of this current episode that we're shooting, and the next one, actually, so Liane [Balaban] has been around a lot this past week and she's coming back. I'm shooting with her tomorrow. We do find out when and why, and it begs a few further questions."

Since Sam's cell phone was turned off, we know he didn't leave her because of a phone call from Dean, and he's obviously still pretty hung up on her, given the rose-colored flashback we saw a couple weeks ago. "We see in Sam at the beginning of the season that she's not dead to him. It's not like 'Ugh, whew. Done,'" Jared says. "He still has something for her, even if it's just the idea of being able to settle down and have a woman in [his] life ... it's a very, very good reason, why Sam and Amelia go their separate ways, and I'm happy that we get to see that."

Just as Jensen Ackles told us he's enjoying exploring new connections for Dean, Jared is excited about Sam's new relationships this season. "The show is always going to be about Sam-and-Dean as a character, the brotherhood," he assures us, "but I do like fleshing out who these guys are outside of each other. It gives it more value, how much they care about each other, when you see that they have other things that they care about."

  1. AT LAST,I need some more info about Sam.I mean all we see is about DEAN-BENNY AND DEAN-CASTIEL.Sam has been so underrated for the past 2 seasons...They need to include more stuff about him.I am really interested in seeing what happened between him and Amelia.

  2. Alright, so late this year and early next year we should look for some Sam point of view about Amelia. That's more promising. I love how Jared express that adding more relationships to the show makes the Winchester's relationship more meaningful. It's much better than saying Amelia is on the same level as Dean like they did with Benny. And I love how they leave Amelia and Sam story open, so maybe she isn't the one, but she gets Sam thinking. That's a good way to approach the story without pinning down this is the love of his life. And they go their separate ways for a reason that sounds like a story. I don't like having to wait for Sam's point of view or to understand why Sam didn't look for Dean, but this is another promising step. If the writers follow through and really really show Sam's story in length of time they give to deal, then I'll start believing that adding relationships to the show is a good idea to help the Winchester, because right now, I'm regretting wishing for more relationships and characters on the show due to Dean being the center. But if it's just a slow start, then I'm going to be proven wrong on this season being poor which I'm more than glad to be proven wrong about. Better interview for the brothers' relationship and the involvement of all the main characters.

  3. They have 23 episodes to fill with story, they can't tell everything all at once.

  4. The episode they're filming right now is 11 I think?

I like the idea of Sam having an Amelia, I think the story can work. I'm not one of the people who think that because Sam is on the road hunting with Dean as the show calls for him to be that he cant have something like normal too. I am looking forward to Amelia being on the show in real time and not flashbacks, I want to witness the conversation they have about Sam's life of hunting, who he is and was outside of Sam the normal guy. I think it would be interesting to have a long term female character being slowly introduced into the fold, having her reactions and feelings be integral to Sam's story too and for her to be a character in her own right too. If Cas and Benny can have back stories then it makes sense that Amelia's be important too.

Its going to be interesting to see where Sam and Amelia are towards the end of the season, will she start to be more involved in Sam's other life? Sam's two worlds coming together and how the writers make this work so it does work. I want Sam to have Amelia and Riot in his life and I want him to realise his value as a hunter. Why cant he have both?

  5. No they can't but the show has a history of giving Sam's storyline short shrift.

They often forget to tell his story so it ends up with like 10 episodes for Dean, 3 for guest stars and 1/2 an episode for Sam. [For all the literal people out there, this was an exaggeration used to make a point.]

  6. It's not just that. Why is it a rule that we can't find out about what's going on with Sam until the second half of the season? They couldn't allocate one episode in the first half to delve deep into Sam's past year so that we would have some context as we watch Sam and Dean fight over hunting?

  7. Indeed .
But it's useless to tell them here, too much logic and common sense.

Some here already know everything about all 23 episodes after just 4 have aired.

    LOL

  8. This sounds a lot like last year's, "The first half is about Dean, the second half is about Sam. Just wait. The second half of the season will be all about Sam!"

  9. Exactly, and last year everyone kept saying "Be patient, the second half will be about Sam's story." Well look what happened. He got one show about his soulless time and two episodes that he shared with Cas. Cas got an entire episode to explain his side of the story. Sam, one of the stars of the show didn't.
