Supernatural - 8.03 - Heartache - Quotes
21 Oct 2012
SupernaturalSupernatural 8.03 - Heartache was certainly pun-ilicious. Lots of heart jokes, including this gem that didn't quite make the cut for me: Dean: "And he wasn't wearing a heart?" Cop: "No, heart-less." I enjoyed the quotes this week even as I tried to merrily avoid the anvil-dropping of brotherly strife. Since this was a standalone episode, I was tempted to drop the mytharc/story moving section but I decided to include quotes that tied to the case of the week in that part. I also included a new section for this episode called Words to Live By. These include either good advice for general life or something I wish the show runners and writers would remember. A great example would be from the pilot: "No chick flick moments." I so wish they had stuck to this or at least limited them. Since not every episode will have words to live by this section will only appear when the episode fits it. Final note - not all the quotes this time are ones that I liked. Instead they might be ones I felt were important even as I was cringing.
So what were your two favorite quotes? Don't forget to nominate them for our summer quotes contest. And as always, comments are joy.
Words to Live By
Not many episodes have words to live by but this one had two. Sometimes I wish the writers would take their own advice.
2. Betsy: "Brick used to say the heart was key. That was the focus of the sacrifice."
-Heart isn't just the focus of the sacrifice. It's the focus of the show. Its foundation is the relationship between the brothers and how they have sacrificed everything for each other. I'm not saying that the relationship can't grow and they can't want other things. That's natural. What I am saying is creating new and more out-of-character ways to have the brothers at odds is getting old and a detriment to the power of the show. Come on Jeremy. You yourself said that it is all about the brothers. How about giving us a united front for a change? That would really be novel and a breath of fresh air.
1. Dean: "Wow! Back in business. Got the win. Admit it. Feels good huh?"
-This is my favorite quote of the whole episode. It sums up what they got right in this episode, what they got right in almost every episode in the first three seasons of Supernatural. We got smart, competent hunters who can get the job done with limited help and no need for secondary characters to rescue them - such a nice surprise! We saw the brothers research the problem and kill the bad guys…and no one escaped to have to be dealt with later. These are the brothers of old and I have missed them. Smart Dean and Smart Sam are back. Now please let me keep them.
Funny/Snarky quotes:
8. Dean: "Ah…ah you guys are stronger than you look." Paul: "It comes with the package. Plus I work out a lot."
7. Dean: "Where the hell are we?" Sam: "Farmer's market. Organic."
6. Dean: "So no new interests - fly fishing, stamp collecting, the occult?"
5. Dean: "Wow, guy goes to Purgatory for a year all hell breaks out. Check this out. Jogger in Minneapolis gets his heart ripped out." Sam: "I'm guessing literally." Dean: "Only way that interests me."
4. Paul Hayes: "I do a lot of cardio"
3. Dean: "Really? Our king daddy monster is a stripper?"
2. Dean: "Same thing happens. Also in Minneapolis. What does that tell us?" Sam: "Stay out of Minneapolis."
1. Dean: "Two hearts ganked, same city 6 months apart. I mean that's has to be a ritual man. Or at least some kind of a heart sucking, possessed Satanic crack whore bat."
Story-moving quotes:
8. Dean: "So you getting his statement?"
7. Betsy: "You must think I'm a monster." Dean: "No. No, just that you married one."
6. Betsy: "I'm old Randa, not an idiot." Randa: "I'm just trying to protect Brick." Betsy: "And so am I."
5. Detective: "Sure he can run a little bit but Thor he ain't. You think he's going to grab Freddy Fitness here and throw him down and rip out his heart. I don't think so. Forgive me if I didn't take him out back and shoot him."
4. Sam: "Brick Holmes, a heart eater. Who knew?" Dean: "Heh, sorry buddy. The mighty they fall hard huh." Sam: "At least he wasn't sleeping with his mother." Dean: "Yeah good Sam, find the silver lining."
3. Dean: "No hex bags, nothing satanic, nothing spooky." Sam: "So didn't seem like a guy to be voted most likely to disembowel." Dean: "Oh they never do."
2. Dean; "Wait a second. I bought a translation app." Sam: "You bought an app." Dean: "Yeah."….Dean: "And babble wins, language unknown."
1. Sam: "You want to guess who else other than Arthur Swenson had a transplant in the last year?' Dean: "Paul Hayes." Sam: "I gave it away didn't I?"
Emotional quotes:
6. Sam: "Look I'm not saying I'm bailing on you. I'm just saying make room for the possibility that we want different things. I mean I want my time to count for something." Dean: "So what we do doesn't count?"
5. Sam: "Or, maybe you don't need me. I mean maybe you're at your best hacking and slicing your way through all the world's cr** alone, not having to explain yourself to anybody." Dean: "Yeah that makes sense seeing as how I have so many other brothers I can talk to about this stuff."
4. Dean: "No, uh Brick Holmes is the way into this. Eleanor Holmes was doing her damnedest not to tell us a thing. Nice job in changing the subject though."
3. Sam: "Dean listen. When this is over, when we close up shop on Kevin and the tablet, I'm done. I mean that." Dean: "No you don't." Sam: "Dean the year that I took off I had something I've never had. A normal life. I mean I got to see what that felt like. I want that. I had that."
2. Dean: "You know I was thinking about what Randa said about what it feels like to be a warrior. I get it man. I do." Sam: "I know. I know you do. I don't. Not anymore. Hell maybe I never did." Dean: "Come on Sam, don't ruin my buzz would ya?"
1. Dean: "I don't know about you but this last year has given me a new perspective." Sam: "I hear you. Believe me." Dean: "I know where I'm at my best and that is right here, driving down crazy street next to you."

I was just celebrating a Winchester win when Dean made the comment about how good it felt to win again. Could not agree more. Here's hoping for even more.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to watch much of Supernatural, but I had to stop by and say how cool it is that you do this!XD It's has to be so much fun for you Supes! (:
ReplyDelete:D, how not to love Dean
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind comment. I love having Supernatural things to talk about between episodes and since we will be doing a huge quotes contest over the summer, it seemed like a natural bridge. I hope you will one day get to watch more Supernatural and can join us in the discussion. By the way, I am keeping current on Revolution but have been too busy at work to comment much on it here. Things are beginning to slow down so I hope to be more of a presence in the Revolution conversation from here on. I know you have been reviewing it.
ReplyDeleteHe does seem to get a lot of good snarky lines.
ReplyDelete"Heart isn't just the focus of the sacrifice. That would really be novel and a breath of fresh air."
ReplyDeleteOMG can I 2nd, 3rd and 4th that statement? How many, ever more unbelievable and ooc ways are they going to stretch credulity in order to create some artificial angst between Dean and Sam? I think the writers must believe it creates dramatic tension, but it doesn't because no one really thinks that Sam will give up hunting, or that the angst they create will ever permanently split them up. If either of those things happened we'd have no show. So just stop it! It is boring, repetitive, and really not fun to watch. How about some Sam and Dean using the strong bind between them to make each other stronger and to be a united front against the bad guys. That would actually be an original direction for the story to go in.
They have to start, though, by showing us that Sam did look for Dean. Because if he didn't, and there isn't a damned good reason (or he did and can't say) then they are throwing away 2 of the 3 key elements of the show; Sam and the brothers relationship. In this ep - and your quotes illustrate this - Sam came over as almost sorry Dean had come back a spoiled his perfect, chocolate-box life with Amelia. I mean come ON! As if the real Sam would be anything other than ecstatic. They need to sort out the characterisations and the brothers relationship before the show becomes unrecognisable.
Someday, if you're bored in hiatus, I'd love to see a collection of quotes from Dean's weird monster cookbook, like this episode's "a heart sucking, possessed Satanic crack whore bat."
ReplyDeleteThere are a few times throughout the years, when there is a weird set of clues, and Dean will spout some weird guess at what monster it is. It's always a wild hilarious theory. I'd love to see those put together in a list. I wish a could remember some of them now, but I suck like a crack whore bat..
Yeah, I am flailing trying to get my heart in Sam's story. I know they are trying to reboot, by going back to the S1 premise that started it. And I know they are causing the angst to rejuvinate the brother's bond [and darn, but it does need it, so tired it is...]
ReplyDeleteBut how am I supposed to take Sam's inevitable anger at the Benny introduction seriously, when THIS Sam they're writing, would just say "Damn, thanks Benny, you take over as Needy Dean's Brother, OK, so I can get my freak on with Amelia, Dog and School. Yeehaw!"
I was so grateful that someone survived this, that it felt like people were saved. Last year, there was no one the Winchesters saved. It was so pathetic.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind a little trouble in paradise between the brothers, but the FAMILY part of the show is what hooked me and has kept me. I am holding on to the fact that Sam never said he did not look for Dean, but he did not say he did either. I am hoping I did not miss it as I have watched that ep over and over, but saying that I am intrigued by this season. I just know Carver has a plan and it will work out.....PLEASE, let it work out. lol
ReplyDelete1. Dean: "Wow! Back in business. Got the win. Admit it. Feels good huh?"
2. Dean: "Same thing happens. Also in Minneapolis. What does that tell us?" Sam: "Stay out of Minneapolis."
well given that we've been told that Sam's anger will be based on the fact that Dean is being a hypocrite in trusting a monster and lying then it is somewhat believable.
ReplyDeleteI dont see Sam angry that Dean is hunting with someone else in fact if Benny were human I think it would be easier for Sam to walk away. I think the fact that isn't human is what has Sam worried, cautious, sticking around. If we the viewers are already associating Benny as a Ruby type character than I think we can safely say that Sam will be doing the same.
However the way these things usually play out means the only person who will actually get their licks in this season will be Dean. The writers have made it so that Sam not looking for Dean has completely negated any argument Sam has regardless of his being right or not. Dean will just be able to throw it back at Sam to settle every argument and I think most fans would take that and I actually think Sam will to. Inevitably all they are doing it would seem is making it easier and more believable that Sam would want out.
6. Sam: "Look I'm not saying I'm bailing on you. I'm just saying make room for the possibility that we want different things. I mean I want my time to count for something."
ReplyDelete5. Sam: "Or, maybe you don't need me. I mean maybe you're at your best hacking and slicing your way through all the world's cr** alone, not having to explain yourself to anybody." Dean: "Yeah that makes sense seeing as how I have so many other brothers I can talk to about this stuff."
Poor Sam, some of his lines had me confused, theres seems to be a lot going on behind the surface that I hope we get to explore soon. He's a lot harder to read than Dean.
Sam has always been harder for me to read, but I like that. Heck I don't want a show I figure out the ending halfway thru an ep. I like to say WOW I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING. lol
ReplyDeleteSam: "Or, maybe you don't need me. I mean maybe you're at your best hacking and slicing your way through all the world's cr** alone, not having to explain yourself to anybody." Dean: "Yeah that makes sense seeing as how I have so many other brothers I can talk to about this stuff."
ReplyDeleteDean: "Wow! Back in business. Got the win. Admit it. Feels good huh?"
I thought some of the things he said were strange and hinted at things/revelations to come in Sam's upcoming storyline I'd like to see how he got to where he is right now because at the moment its a mystery. Dean's story is definitely a lot less shrouded in mystery and his behaviour is is a lot easier to decipher because we're already seeing and being able to deduce what he's been through.
ReplyDeleteMostly its warrior bit that gets me, Sam is and always will be a hero and warrior even if he is a reluctant one, I think he's lost sight of all the good that he has does, I wonder if part of his reason for quitting was because it all seemed like a never ending battle that he couldn't win, after loosing everything he couldn't see the good in it all any more?
I like where they're going with this I think but I just wish we could get into it a bit faster, I'm too impatient to be a Sam girl, too much happens to slow, off screen or not at all.
We'll have to see how this plays out, but I suspect part of Sam's reaction will be motivated by fear for Dean, if Sam is seeing something dangerous about Benny that he thinks Dean is not seeing. If Sam did play a role in getting Dean out of Purgatory, he could know more about Benny's role than he can let on.
ReplyDeleteDean: "So no new interests - fly fishing, stamp collecting, the occult?"
ReplyDeleteI actually wasn't terribly impressed with the dialogue in this episode. But this was one line that I found genuinely funny.
Sam: "What is this?"
Amelia: "Never seen a birthday cake before?"
Because it gave me ~feelings~ and made me want to hug Sam.
Ouch. I didn't realize that #5 line is essentially Sam telling Dean "you're at your best" in Purgatory. I know Sam doesn't realize he is telling him that, but that is a blow. :(
ReplyDeleteOddly enough, I can accept the choice not to look for Dean, OOC as it is after 8 years down the line of character growth. I assume a PTSD reaction for it.
ReplyDeleteFor me, it's the way Sam seems to be indifferent to Dean. Maybe it is the accumulation of dialogue, with knowing he didn't look. But lines like "You're at your best hacking and slashing alone" delivered each episode, makes Dean's turn to Benny inevitable, doesn't it?
He's essentially giving Dean a nudge towards his Purgatory self. Dean may be the big brother, but the show has always trumped it by Dean's need to be needed by Sam or John.
I'm reminded of that infuriating line from "Fallen Idols" where Sam tells Dean "I went to Ruby because you forced me to..." I'm hoping there is some clever twist to the Benny and Amelia characters, than just rebooting Ruby & Lisa.
But with Sam's attitude towards Dean now, it is going to take a powerful amount of acting from Jared to convince me Sam gives a crap when the Benny character is introduced.
How can I believe any journey Sam makes now to "wanting" to choose Dean and hunting over anything else, given the total free choice? I did in S2-7, but S8 undermines any free will choice of Dean. Sam is one bundle of unwanting obligation now. Just UGH.
I agree and Sam has already said this season that the world did not end with him not hunting. I can see where it would be overwhelming, like trying to empty the ocean with an eye dropper. I am with you on maybe a little faster, as that is one of the things I always liked about SPN, did not have to wait long for an outcome...at least not in the first 5 seasons. They were always moving ahead and I could see the goal.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope you are right in this perspective! There has to be something causing Sam's attitude! I want more Sam flashbacks.... and definitely more Purgatory. But need more Sam POV than that he is unhappy and pining... At least Benny will shake his world.
ReplyDeleteWhy does Sam have to be right? Why does Dean?
ReplyDeleteWhy can't Dean be hurt by Sam's choices, why can't Sam be irritated when he feels Dean isn't listening to him.
We've had years of Sam trying to be right and sometimes right royally screwing it up then giving speeches justifying it. Just like we had years of Dean swallowing his anger and his pain and instead of actually dealing with it and then he screwing himself and any other relationship he has over.
If the boys are going to be mature this time lets actually have them go down the dealing with the anger issue instead of one of them swallowing it and letting it fester.
I think with the flashbacks we've seen from Sam and the way he left that girl we are going to find out that the normality Sam has built himself is sits on a foundation of sand, so I don't think it is going to take much to rock it and his brother trusting a vamp would probably start to crack it.
ReplyDeleteIn many ways I think Sam has gotten use to Dean having a very black and white moral code that he doesn't even think of it any more.
But agree that we need more of Sam's POV.
It's been like that for several years now and it has become one of my biggest pet peeves of the show. I hope we get more solid wins and more smart brothers this season.
ReplyDeleteIf you ask for my twisted view on the world, I'd have to say that Sam was saved. He seems like he's comfortable with his decision and is tossing quotes at Dean to satiate him. I think Sam's at peace and Dean is doing the Electric Boogaloo.
ReplyDeleteYes. Very nice work. Love the amount of detail you put into it. One of these days I'll start digging deep to get into ALL the quotes since I have nothing but time on my hands.
ReplyDeleteTake time to feel good about it. I know when I used to be super busy I didn't and never fully appreciated my accomplishments.
My thoughts exactly.
ReplyDelete"Wow I did not see that coming".....that's Supernatural at it's best and I missed that the past 2 seasons.
Sam: "Or, maybe you don't need me. I mean maybe you're at your best
ReplyDeletehacking and slicing your way through all the world's cr** alone, not
having to explain yourself to anybody." Dean: "Yeah that makes sense
seeing as how I have so many other brothers I can talk to about this
stuff."
Dean: "Same thing happens. Also in Minneapolis. What does that tell us?" Sam: "Stay out of Minneapolis."
I'm not following. Are you saying that this case saved Sam or more in general that for the last 2 seasons Sam has found an inner peace with the hunting life and now feels comfortable leaving it?
ReplyDeleteNow's a great time to submit your favorite quotes since seasons 1-4 nominations are still open. I'll put the links on the next quotes compilation article.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see "Sam and Dean using the strong bond between them to make each other stronger and to be a united front against the bad guys." It would be novel at this point and something I sorely need.
ReplyDeleteHa! Never thought about that. I'll be on the lookout for any as I do my hiatus rewatch.
ReplyDeleteLove how Sam got to be in on the snark in this episode. They had more snappy Sam lines in this one than in several previous episodes combined.
ReplyDeleteI have been watching season one again and in the context of this season am seeing a lot of Sam talking about getting out even back then. In Bugs he was telling the kid, Matt, in a few years you will be in school and can leave. Looking back as a kid he told one of his teachers he did not want to be in the "family business" and in Heaven all his "good" memories were being away from family. There have been many of these thru the years. So I think you are right, he is comfortable. The only thing that bothers me is if he did not try and find Dean, so am hoping he did look.
ReplyDeleteEvents of the last two seasons have shown Sam that he's okay without hunting. Just by the expressions on his face and the timing of his retorts to Dean make me feel that he's thinking "I'm ok with all this, you're my brother and I'll be with you just for a little longer.". He's at rest with himself finally. I think leaving Amelia made that decision final.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think that would set up Sam being the "big brother" once Dean starts picking up with Benny. Sam wouldn't necessarily be at odds with Dean but be there to watch over him like Dean did for Sam. And when or if Cas shows up he could be there for advice for Sam. (I really think if he makes it out he'll be mojo-less.) It would lend a whole new dynamic and maybe make the bond between the bros stronger.
