Ratings Breakdown:
It was a race to the winning overnight finish line on this third Wednesday of the new TV season, with CBS first — two-tenths of a rating point ahead of ABC and Fox. There were three scripted drama premieres last night – Arrow on The CW, Nashville on ABC and Chicago Fire on NBC. And two of the three were amply sampled.

Arrow on The CW launched with a solid 3.0 rating/5 share in the overnights at 8 p.m., which placed it fourth in the hour (ahead of NBC sitcoms Animal Practice and Guys With Kids). Comparably, this was 150 percent above the debut of short-lived year-ago occupant H8R (1.2/ 2 on 9/14/11) and 200 percent ahead of a repeat of failed drama Ringer on the year-ago evening (1.0/ 2 on 10/13/11). Additionally, Arrow built by 15 percent from fall 2010 time period occupant America’s Next Top Model (2.6/ 4 on 10/13/10) on the comparable day.

Next on The CW was episode two of the new season of relocated Supernatural, which dipped to fifth with a 1.7/ 3 at 9 p.m. Comparably, that was 11 percent below year-ago occupant America’s Next Top Model (1.9/ 3 on 10/12/11), with retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of Arrow (3.0/ 5) of just 57 percent.

In the initial 10 p.m. battle of Nashville versus Chicago Fire, Nashville (with stronger lead-in support) held a considerable 45 percent overnight advantage. But first in the time period was granddaddy CSI on CBS at a 7.0/12. Nashville on ABC opened with a very respectable 6.8/12 (#2), which was 10 percent above year-ago occupant Revenge (6.2/10 on 10/12/11). And the retention out of a 9:30 p.m. edition of Modern Family (#1: 8.5/13) was positive at 80 percent. Given the lead-in support, Nashville should have no problem scoring a time victory among adults 18-49 (and the female demos, no doubt).

Competing Chicago Fire on NBC finished third with a 4.7/ 8 in the overnights, which is nothing to boast about. But the new Dick Wolf drama did build from the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in Law & Order: SVU (4.3/ 7) by nine percent. And it only dropped by two percent in the second half-hour (4.7/ 8 at 10 p.m. to 4.6/ 8 at 10:30 p.m.) versus an 11 percent drop for Nashville (7.2/12 to 6.4/11). The winner in round one, however, is clearly Nashville (and CSI, which was on par from one year earlier).

In the battle of the 8-9 p.m. sitcoms, ABC ruled over NBC. ABC’s The Middle (#3: 5.8/ 9) at 8 p.m. bested NBC’s Animal Practice (#5: series low 2.7/ 4) by a hefty 114 percent; and week three of The Neighbors on ABC (#3: 4.6/ 7) beat week four of Guys With Kids on NBC (#5: 2.8/ 4) at 8:30 p.m. by 64 percent. Comparably, The Neighbors was close to week-ago time period debut levels (4.8/ 7 on Oct. 3), but down by 29 percent from year-ago occupant Suburgatory (6.5/10 on 10/12/11).

Also on ABC was the regularly scheduled edition of Modern Family at a very dominant 8.7/13 at 9 p.m.

Elsewhere, Survivor: Philippines and the first half of The X Factor on Fox tied for first in the 8 p.m. hour, each with a healthy 6.7/11. One year earlier, Survivor: South Pacific was similar with a 6.9/11 (on 10/12/11). Survivor led into veteran Criminal Minds, which finished a solid second in the 9 p.m. hour with a 7.5/11 (-11 percent from the year-ago evening). And The X Factor on Fox averaged a 6.8/11 from 8-10 p.m., peaking in the 9 p.m. half-hour with a 7.0/11.

Law & Order: SVU, meanwhile, was fourth at 9 p.m. with a 4.2/ 7. Comparably, that trailed older-skewing year-ago occupant Harry’s Law (5.8/ 9 on 10/12/11) by 28 percent.

  1. Will we get early ratings estimates today? With 3 premieres yesterday it's kind of an important day for ratings

  2. Glad to see Arrow has good rating.

  3. SupernaturalGreece11 October 2012 at 14:37

C'mon now Supernatural. Episode was epic, what the hell now?

    ReplyDelete
  4. why are supernatural ratings so low?c'mon it was a good episodes!

    ReplyDelete
  5. How the Neighbors is surviving and doing well, I will not understand.

    ReplyDelete
  6. The episode was nothing shore tof amazing! I feel like we're the new Fringe fans, being shorted of ratings we deserve because the VERY small minority, nielson boxers, dont' watch it. I think SPN pulls it in with DVR and online views though.

    ReplyDelete
  7. SPN fans (I include myself in that) are such a passionate bunch it always surprises me when the ratings are in and they are disappointing. I seems to think that it should be doing better than it is.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Don't panic yet. Berman only does total ratings, the advertisers care about 18-34 and Supernatural does okay, for a CW show, there. Let's wait for the demos to come in. Now, Arrow getting great totals looks good. OTOH, Harry's Law on NBC last year was it's highest rated show overall with the lowest rated demos and that got it cancelled.

Last week's preliminaries had Supernatural at 1.80 total viewers and we were the highest rated show last week. Let's chill until we have more information.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The new Fringe fans?
This has been a problem for 8 years... And they started with much smaller ratings than Fringe...

    ReplyDelete
  10. Good news for Arrow. It can show when people care about something on CW It can get some ratings.ANd yes I am talking about the dismal ratings of 90210 and Gossip Girl.

    ReplyDelete
  11. My guess is quite a lot of those passionate fans online arent even nilson viewers and quite often not even US viewers.

    ReplyDelete
  12. OMG I'm so glad for Arrow :-) !!! It's deserved.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I expect good ratings for Arrow, cant even guess as to what it will come in at. But I expect it may win the week for the CW.
I expect SPN to be down against incresed competition and the usual post premier drop off, though who knows with Arrow as a lead. If it holds viewers and more importantly demo it'll be a win for the show and for the CW.

    ReplyDelete
  14. What about CSI,how did they do?

    ReplyDelete
  15. As useless as I think this analysis is at the end, I don't think I remember the last time I saw a CW show as part of the winners list here. Let's wait for the finals, but I am hoperful for Arrow now.

    ReplyDelete
  16. The only thing that is really clear for me is the increase of +53% for the CW from last year.
    That sounds positive at least.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes, I guess you must be right.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1.1? thats not good at all

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh gosh, I thought that Arrow would at least have scored a 1.3 or 1.4. 1.1 seems a a bit too low

    ReplyDelete
  20. the good news for the cw is that arrow will probably be renewed for as long as the cw exists. the bad news is that the cw will soon cease to exist. I dont think the vampire diares will do much better than that tonight and no way beauty pulls it higher than 1

    ReplyDelete
  21. also, csi was surprisingly strong last night. there are not many 10 pm dramas cracking a 2.5 these days and for it to even go up from its premiere when its facing full competition, it's pretty remarkable. it will probably win its timeslot in the future. Nashville did like 0.1 or 0.2 lower than i expected, but still where I thought it would be. Chicago Fire did the exact number I predicted. But I am not sure that means cancelation over at NBC. If it holds on that level, it will be on par with Parenthood and with the increasingly expensive SVU. The thing is that NBC has an insane amount of stuff to premiere at midseason, so they can afford to cancel a lot of underperfoming shows (although judging by new normal renewal, that does not seem to be where they are headed).

  22. Let me tell you a story about Nielsen. They aren't even measuring the right demos. When I was in college, my family was a Nielsen family. My parents were in their 50s and my younger sister was 13. The only person who would have fallen in the supposed coveted demo 18-49 was me, but like I said I was away at college, so 95% of the time it was not counting/measuring my viewing choices. How the hell is Nielsen supposed to accurately measure the demo 18-49 when they give Nielsen boxes to people who aren't even in that demo? Makes no sense.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nashville didn't exactly do poorly but I doubt it was the homerun ABC hoped. It's still a bit below where ABC's hits last year opened and didn't do THAT much better than ABC's other dramas. It might outlast both Last Resort and 666 Park Avenue, but a second season? These numbers aren't the best start for that.

    ReplyDelete
  24. dont get to excitied about arrows numbers.. it was the first episode they will dip. i tryed watching but the acting is horrific and dry. and the writing is not good. its going to dip down low im sure of it. the only reason its so high is cause its brand new, people tryed it out but ill bet money they wont be back.

    ReplyDelete
  25. HEY GUYS, Tv By the Numbers, and other outlets are reporting 1.3 FOR ARROW!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Going by Berman's 18-49 Arrow got a 1.3

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1.3 is for the 18-34 demo, not the 18-49 demo

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes it has, TV By the Numbers has changed theirs as they said it was a mistake and that it got a 1.3

    ReplyDelete
  29. nope it got a 1.3 according to Mark Berman and TV By The Numbers and Entertainment Weekly in 18-49?

    ReplyDelete
  30. oh right the comment's changed, sorry :)

    ..wooow..ARROW.......rock the rating....YESSSSSSS....AWESOME

    ReplyDelete
  32. SPN definitely benefitted from Arrow's lead. Glad to see it at 1,

    ReplyDelete
  33. Isn't that up from last week for SPN? I thought they had a 0.8 in the demo with 1.8 total viewers?

    ReplyDelete
  34. If Supernatural really got a 1.0 I'm buying my friends dinner tonight... ; )

    ReplyDelete
  35. Must be New Year's Eve on The Cw!

    ReplyDelete
  36. 1 for supernatural is incredible

    ReplyDelete

  37. From EW.com

Another key debut last night: The CW’s Arrow (4 million, 1.3
rating) got off to a good start (quite possibly a great one among total
viewers, still waiting for confirmation on that). It also gave Supernatural (2.6 million, 1.0) a boost this week.

So really good for both Arrow and Supernatural. Really, really good.

    ReplyDelete
  38. FTW SUPERNATURAL. I'm so happy right now. Glad to see this ratings :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. tvmonkey • You were right when yesterday you predicted that the CW would beat NBC at eight o'clock; it did for the first hal-hour anyway. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Interesting. I watched Arrow and wasn't as taken with it as I was with the Supernatural Pilot. Of course I continued watching Supernatural, that was a great episode, catching some of the spark from earlier seasons. I am a big fan!

    ReplyDelete
  41. 3.88 In total voewer and 1.3 In Demo for Arrow Is very good for a CW show.Premiere of Arrow got more total viewers than season 3 of vampire diaires.Beauty and the beast Is going to tank
    tonight.Arrow Is the new smallville.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Time to call it quits for Supernatural my foot. These "ratings" don't take into account that many viewers in New York lost their television viewing of Supernatural due to that stupid blackout and those that are die hard fans have had to resort to watching it via streaming online. Then there is the fact that because of the new slot in the week, some have had to resort to DVRing it because they have prior engagements during that time in the middle of the week. Perhaps it's time for Neilson/rating systems to hang it up if they can't reconfigure the way they measure an audience...not everyone watches shows the same way.

    ReplyDelete
  43. HA!! 1.0 in the demos and nearly 3mil actual eyeballs watching SPN. EAT THAT DAWN OSTROFF!!!!!!!!!!

... Sorry, just had to get that off my chest....

Solid start for Arrow too. I'm happy to see that.

    ReplyDelete
  44. To be far Supernatural never got 1 In demo on friday so It Is good for them.
Last year the Vampire diaires was about the only show to hit 2 million In overall ratings and 1 In Demo.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Arrow did excellent for a CW show, but time will tell if viewers hold up. I hope it does.

As for Supernatural, really happy the move to Wednesday and the helpful boost of Arrow airing before it is working out. Hope SPN continues to do this well. The article writer says its time to call quits, but I have to disagree. This new season is better than the last 2 so far, imo, and the ratings and viewers are up. Plus, it's doing better than a lot of other CW shows- yeah I'm thinking of at least 3 shows on the network that would need to go before SPN based on viewers.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Guess you're going to have to buy that dinner.

    ReplyDelete
  47. ''Time to Call it Quits:
    Supernatural (CW),''

xD those people even know the average ratings of the CW?
I'm SSSSSOOO happy for Arrow/SPN :D two awesome shows who deserve their ratings of last night!

    ReplyDelete
  48. If the actors have aother year on contract supernatural will probally get another year based on these ratings.Supernatural Is benefiting from Arrow.

    ReplyDelete
  49. True and I'll be glad to do it!
Nothing fancy though...Maybe burgers and beer.It is Supernatural we are honoring after all! : )

    ReplyDelete
  50. I believe the J's have signed on for another two years but I could be mistaken.
I do hope the ratings hold up even although I'm wary about the direction the show is taking at the moment.
However while it is on-air it can always better itself, if it's cancelled; no. So I wish SPN long life and maybe a film at the end. :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. CW must be relived about Arrow I think all the positive reviews probably helped as well in bringing in viewers who may not usually watch the CW but like comics. Be interesting to see how it does in the forthcoming weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Holy shit SPN up by that much?! Looks like some people who watched Arrow decided to give SPN a try or maybe all those people who usually DVR the show decided to watch live?

Its obviously not time to call it quits given that an 8 year old show only came in 1 tenth behind a brand new one on its premier.

Thats some crazy shit right there!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Clearly this guy doesn't understand what good ratings are on the CW. Those Supernatural numbers are what Vampire Diaries was getting at the end of last season.
Also, I'm so happy for Arrow. Best CW premiere since Vampire Diaries. I hope it stays high because the pilot was great.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Supernatural is plenty strong. It's not going anywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I still find The Neighbors oddly entertaining. Hope it sticks around because I love to watch Jamie Gertz.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I like Animal Practice as well.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Am I the only one that thought Nashville would (or should) do a little better than 2.8 and just under 9 million total viewers?

Maybe the early release of the pilot affected ratings, but I have to think ABC wanted more than the numbers they got for the premiere episode.....

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yep, all the promotion and good reviews I was looking at around 11-12 million and 3.0

    ReplyDelete
  59. Just reading elsewhere and noticed that Nashville was down 15% from the Revenge premiere last year... and lost some of its audience in the second half hour of the episode too... That is not usually a great sign.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Nope, it's not. Next weeks drop offs for all 3 new shows will be quite telling

    ReplyDelete
  61. Worst part of watching a CW show (besides, usually, the show itself) is the ratings.Good ratings on CW are very different from good ratings in CBS. With CW,you gotta lower your standards. So I guess Arrow did pretty well. Good. I liked it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. same with any network. Ratings are relative, you cant compare ratings across networks, you can only compare shows on the same network to each other.

CW's Wednesday line up actually performed better then the usual CW standard. Win.

Nashville did well for a 10pm show on ABC. Win

Chicago Fire did well for a 10pm show for NBC (Revolution exceeded expectation and the normal NBC standard) Win.

    ReplyDelete
  63. still good for a 10pm show on ABC show and also still good for a new drama on ABC.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Now if TVD and Beauty and the Beast can do the same or better tonight the CW should be pretty darn happy. If only HOD hadnt crashed this week, it could have provided a decent lead in for Emily Owens and would have provided another solid night.

CW need their new shows to do well so they can perhaps think about shedding some of the lesser rated shows. As it is a new Monday night line up should be top of their priority for next season.

    ReplyDelete
  65. What blackout? I live in NY and didn't experience a blackout..

    ReplyDelete
  66. SPN premièred with a 1.3 in season 6 on Friday night, It hovered at a 1.0 and above for a good part of the fall. It did not however hit above a 0.8 for the whole of season 7.

SPN premièred season 7 with just over 2 million viewers, Ringer and TSC obviously started over 1.0 and 2 million viewers before dropping steadily. HOD hit over 2 million viewers once I believe.

    ReplyDelete
  67. One of the cable companies is in a battle with the CW and have blacked it out for their customers.

    ReplyDelete
  68. The north american rating system will never cease to confuse me. Hell,I just wanna know what are the odds of my shows being cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Oh that kind,i thought you meant electrical blackout!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Make it bacon cheeseburgers. ;) lol

    ReplyDelete
  71. Best way to tell is to take a look at the other shows on the channel. If your show is higher than a few other shows in ratings and viewers it's pretty safe.

    ReplyDelete
  72. No Supernatural should not call it quits! I love escaping into the world of the Winchesters! Keep it coming........

    ReplyDelete
  73. Jensen and Jared renewed their contracts through season 10.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Woo hoo CW! Awesome job! These are amazing demos for the CW compared to spring of last year. I hope they stay steady. Now to see what B&B does.

    ReplyDelete
  75. After watching the pilot of Arrow, I can't help but imagine how awesome the ratings for Nikita would be had it of been paired with Arrow on Wednesdays. Arrow is so Revenge meets Nikita but with a male lead. I guess the CW wanted Wednesdays to be Male-lead's night. Nikita held it's own though on Friday nights last year, lets hope it does the same again.

    ReplyDelete
  76. In no way is Supernatural ready to call it quits. If Smallville could do 10 seasons, SPN can do at least that many. SPN has a really strong following, how many shows you know can be moved 4 times and still pull in 1. I'm glad to see Arrow has started strong.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Noticed that the ratings were up for SN from the week before, hopefully that will keep improving.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Another thing. Pedowitz has point blank said he does not go by these ratings. He knows a lot of the fans stream, DVR, etc. Don't worry about Supernatural yet.
