A fantastic show that keeps getting better. Figured that Diggs suspected, by wasn't expecting him to be "read in" only 3 eps into the series, but I like his character and welcome to see where this development goes. I see that they're planting the seeds for Laurel to eventually become Black Canary, as Laurel kicked that guys butt and Black Canary was a martial arts badass. Loved the continuing backstory, and very much looking forward to see how he eventually learns the craft from his sensei, as well as all the languages, and how he becomes a captain in the Bratva as well. I appreciate how they're also developing Thea, as it would've been to easy to make her the annoying rebellious teen character, which she kinda is at this point but you can tell that there's more to her and her story even at this point. Awesome ep!
Hmm...I wonder if the best friend is going to die and that leads to Laurel becoming Black Canary. I do feel a little sorry for Oliver though. The woman he clearly still has feelings for is sleeping with his best friend. Granted, he doesn't have the right to judge considering he cheated on her with her sister, who then died, but he knows that.
I like the best friend. At first I thought I'd be annoyed by him and his relationship with Laurel, but he's actually a nice guy who genuinely cares about her. I think that's a big reason why Oliver is fine with it.
As for Thea, she's a little annoying right now but she has her reasons. Making her brother feel like crap for trying to control her life is totally a teenage thing to do, on drugs or not.
It was mostly boring. Laurel saved Oliver and Tommy from a worse beatdown and she was such a dork creeping on Oliver online and then being embarrassed at getting caught :) Oliver has a voice-over while sitting next to the cool IT woman LOL.
I'm not some crazy fanboy or anything, but DEADSHOT DOESN'T MISS. I know they need to make him more exciting for television, but I think they could have handled it MUCH better. IGN listed him as #43 on their top 100 comic book villains. He deserved better.
Wow. Boring is not a way I would describe it. So much happened! :)
We might have seen the birth of Merlyn the Archer and the Black Canary in this episode, maybe even Speedy - you can start to see how they are forming their creation myths. (maybe Merlyn tries to be "better" - the Arrow impresses Laurel - Merlyn becomes an Archer - they compete for Laurel - Merlyn goes to the dark side).
We met Felicity Smoak and can see Lance starting to come around. Thea really advanced in her arc and Walter is less a cipher and more a character now.
And Deadeye! "I love your work" was so "You're lookin' like a lawman" (Boyd's line to Raylen in the pilot of Justified). Great action scenes there.
And there's the Russian mob connection now ... and Moira's apparent split personality and Diggle IS going to be Arrow's Alfred, I think.
I thought it was a stronger episode than last week - as good as the pilot.
Yeah - that was a weak spot. I agree. He seemed to be .... I dunno ... scatter shooting - so completely NOT in character. I can see him missing Walter - but what happened after that felt more like a shoot 'em up at the Starling City corral and less like the precise sort of response the Deadshot I know and love would have made. I know it's an interpretation but they have to be careful not to make Oliver simply more superhero-y than everyone else because that would be very much NOT in the *spirit* of the Green Arrow mythos.
There is a comic book character named Elena De La Vega, who is the daughter of Don Diego de la Vega, who is, of course, Zorro.
In the movie The Mask of Zorro the character is played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. It's hard to whether they intend to do anything with this character or her name is just an honorarium to the genre by mentioning one of it's most popular and interesting heroes.
Belief suspension alert: :-) Chuckled when the walls of that fleabag hotel stood up to Dead Shots bullets.
There were parts of this episode that just weren't as engrossing as the previous two episodes. I wanted a bit more movement in Olivers relationship with his family. Not that I expect everything to be hunky dory in three episodes, but maybe to see Oliver at least try a different tact, maybe. His scene with Thea was pretty much exactly the same note as we've seen in the last two episodes. Loved that Laurel spotted that Oliver already knew about the fling with Tommy. Dead Shot was, surprisingly, kind of boring. Yes, he fired a weapon a couple of times then he surfed a computer, flexed his bod, and applied a couple of tattoos. It just wasn't very interesting.
Didn't expect Digg to find out about Oliver so quickly. Also, I'd expected that, when he did find out it would be because Digg was smart and sussed it out, not because Oliver told him.
The flashbacks were really interesting. Am I the only one who thought the guy who shot Oliver seemed a little surprised that Oliver didn't trust him. :-)
My favs were - Laurel rescuing the boys from the club owner, the scene between Thea and her mother and the stuff with Tommy and Oliver in the diner. But over all...this ep drops out of Awesome territory.
..awesome,.fantastic,.,amazing..this episode got everything, good fight,.all the vigilante background well develop,we know how different both are and see our guy admitted he needs help

Yeah, I kind of agree, I confess to being a tad disappointed at the also-ran nature of both Deadshot this week and China White last week.
But I think Deadshot will be back. Or maybe I just hope ... but I have a niggle in my mind that based on the way they did his "death" (we see the arrow but no confirmation of death as Oliver must immediately tend to Diggle's predicament) they have more planned for this character.
He has a robotic eye in the comics. He was shot in the eye. Depending upon how far the arrow went in, it is *conceivable* that he lived. It's interesting, because Green Arrow's defining moment was the one where he stuck Deathstroke in the eye (same eye) with an arrow.,
I thought this was interesting, actually. It explains one of the tattoos - Oliver flashed it as his "id" badge. The Bratva are known for their tattoos and many of the gangs/groups had/have specialized, encoded tattoos that signify rank and association, etc.
It's intriguing, anyway.
I wonder if that Sensei is supposed to be Natas (yeah, that's Satan spelled backwards - comic writers tend to be, if nothing else, heavy handed with the "meaningful" names) who was both Green Arrow's and Deathstroke's teacher. In the mythology, it was Natas who orders Deathstroke to kill the Green Arrow to teach him a "lesson in failure".
I am really enjoying seeing what they do with the mythology - I love the original material but don't mind at all seeing it changed/altered to suit a new story treatment. I think that's part of what I love about comic book characters - they're like story pieces that other storytellers can move around. Some stories end up good (even better than the originals) and some end up not so good. So far, I like Arrow's treatments.
In more than one of the comic book histories for the character, he's had a small support team who help him from behind the scenes and help cover for him. I expected it would happen eventually but this is certainly 2-3 episodes sooner than I thought.
Great episode, great job with deadshot I dont think he's dead tho hopefully not he could be a useful villain in the future. Diggle now knows the truth, Tommy was awesome in this had a lot and laurel kicked ass! I liked thea and moira's moments they were great!
I am not a huge fan of the dramatic in-show cliffhanger and pregnant pause. In some things, the thing is the journey (like Smallville), but in this case, it's the actual destination I am interested in ... I mean to say I care about the origin and I love the backstory - but I am mostly interested in getting to the point where they .. um .. are what they are, I suppose is the best way to put it :)
I want them to be "all that they can be" and while I care about how they got there ... I care less than what they do when they get there, if that makes sense.
In this instance, none of that really matters. They used Deadshot as a one-and-done bad guy of the week. If the show isn't interested in keeping him around and building his character then they can do anything they want with the guy because he's disposable and unimportant.
I did actually pause it on my laptop and looked the guy over for a moment. I figured the writers may have hidden a few Easter eggs on the guy somewhere but I only noticed Diggle's brother's name.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Loving the backstory. Loving the ongoing story. I thought it was awesome.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! http://www.thegreenarrow.net
ReplyDeleteawesome
ReplyDeleteI wasn't expecting Oliver to let Diggs in on his secret so soon, happy things are moving quickly! Super excited for next week
ReplyDeleteLaurel rocks. She was kick ass ... I cannot wait until she's the Black Canary!

ReplyDeleteCTV Two played a switcheroo and aired it on CTV (One)! However that is very good cause that means Arrow is successful in Canada!

ReplyDeleteI didn't know that the plan was to make her black canary ! That would be great, she could team up with oliver
ReplyDeleteYes, they've been pretty open about that, so it's not a spoiler, per se.
ReplyDeleteI think she will make a great Black Canary.

a captain in the Bratva
ReplyDeleteWhich explains the ability to speak Russian.

ReplyDeleteYeah - it's early - but I am *so* liking that. I dislike dragging out stories for the sake of drama and the 48 minute format.
ReplyDeleteYeah.. it's certainly not a slow paced show - even the quieter moments aren't drawn out. Brilliant isn't it :-)
ReplyDeleteYes :)

Actually his best friend, Tommy Merlyn, turns out to be an archenemy of Green Arrow. So that'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
ReplyDeleteDid anyone notice that Deadshot had Diggle's brother's name tattooed on his body?
ReplyDeleteIn this instance, none of that really matters. They used Deadshot as a one-and-done bad guy of the week. If the show isn't interested in keeping him around and building his character then they can do anything they want with the guy because he's disposable and unimportant.
