Dexter - Season 7 Premiere breaks Ratings Record

Did all that Emmy love help Showtime’s Homeland?

It sure didn’t hurt. The second season of the acclaimed drama returned to 2.1 million viewers Sunday night, up a sharp 50 percent from last year’s series premiere (that’s 1.7 million for its first telecast Sunday night, plus another 400k for its repeat). I suspect Homeland‘s audience would have climbed regardless of who won on Emmy night because it’s simply a great and addictive show that’s doubtless been gathering fans over the summer. And having watched the first two episodes, I can tell you that next week is much more intense than last night’s premiere.

The seventh season of Dexter delivered 3 million viewers across two telecasts, up 10 percent from last year. This marks Dexter‘s biggest premiere audience ever. Dexter has managed to grow its premiere rating every single year. So many fan were annoyed by last season, it’s good to see folks were willing to give the drama another shot.

  1. I'm happy for Dexter, the episode was epic and the last ten seconds were what we had been waiting for so long. I think Dexter is probably one of the rare shows with NCIS to increase their viewership every years. Remember NCIS started around 11 millions and they're now around 20 millions and Dexter started around 500 000 if I'm not mistaking and it's probably gonna continue to grow...

  2. yay for Homeland, I agree though think it would have gained an audience even without the Emmys.

  3. I have a feeling some of the increased interest in season 7 comes from the addition of Yvonne Strahovski as guest star. Can't wait for ep. 3 and her debut

  5. Homeland season 1 was really good and the thing that sort of bummed me out, and I feel the same way about Episodes, was how few people saw it... Good to see the show's audience increasing...

  6. I'm happy for both shows. I only hope that Dexter's continuous ratings success doesn't make Showtime blink and start them thinking about milking any extra seasons out of the show.

  7. it actually started at over 640,000 viewers and grew over the years by season 4 it premiered to 1.4 millioj viewers then to 1.78 million viewers during season 5 and season 6 it went to 2.19 million viewers and now 2.4 million viewers i could see season 8 breaking records too especially since its the final season its very rare for TV series to increase over years i thought it might go downn this year cause of the criticism of season 6 but am glad to know i was wrong happy for homeland too sdly i cant watch it on Canada except for iTunes which it costs $31.99 for a seasons pass so i have to wait til i have the money to watch it in canada since we dont have a canadian network that airs it the pilot was 640,000 unless you mean 9+11 PM telecasts?

  8. Sara Colleton confirmed season 8 is the last they already extended past 1 season that they originally wanted i dont see them doing that plus Homeland is like the new Dexter Ratings wise i can see Homeland replacing Dexters Timeslot when it ends so they already found a good replacement ratings wise so they wont be in any trouble ratings wise when Dexter Ends and i can see Homeland having Year-Over Year Growth too

  9. well with Homeland it started out that way but the viewership grew week-week and i love it when shows due that thats usually a good sign ratings wise for future seasons that it will grow year-over year Remember season 1 of dexter only premiered to 640,000 now its at 2.4 million viewers thats a 400% increase from the pilot Homeland premiered at 1.08 million viewers and finished at 1.71 million viewers thats over a 60% increase from the pilot when shows due that its good sign of a shows longivity and year over year growth in viewers

  11. My bad, I actually wrote 500 000 at first and then read on wikipedia (i know not the best source)that the series premiere had one million viewers...and you can easily have it for free online...

  12. Michael C.Hall and Jennifer Carpenter have made it clear that Season 8 is it. Showtime can blink all they want. That won't change. And I doubt anyone was even thinking of Yvonne the night of the premiere. It's going to be a tour de force knock out from MCH and JC this year.

  13. Dexter has declined in quality every season, with the exception of the excellent fourth season with John Lithgow. The show gets more dumbed down, less ambitious and feels more like a Soap with each passing episode. The ratings have increased but the show and characters have become more broad and cater to a much wider audience than before, as a fan of the dark, Noir-style tone of the first season, I hate the direction the show has gone in since and finally gave up on it after the first two horribly contrived and unbelievable episodes of the current season.
