Community - Season 4 - Production briefly halted when Chevy Chase drops the "N" word

20 Oct 2012

Multiple sources confirm to TVLine that Chevy Chase dropped the N-word on the set of the NBC comedy Friday afternoon in the presence of his African-American co-stars Yvette Nicole Brown and Donald Glover. According to an insider, the acting vet was struggling with his character’s dialogue and, in a moment of frustration, uttered the racial epithet.

The slur was not directed at Brown and Glover specifically, maintains another source close to the production, who adds that Chase has grown increasingly unhappy with the dark direction of his character, the bigoted Pierce Hawthorne. But it nonetheless caused enough of a stir to briefly interrupt production. Chase eventually summoned the cast and crew together to issue a formal apology.

  1. Sigh....I'm not even surprised.

  2. That is awful. It really doesn't matter that he didn't direct it toward Donald Glover or Yvette Brown. He shouldn't have said it period. Racial slurs shouldn't be tolerated anywhere especially in the workplace.

  3. Ugh... come on Chevy, why do you have to be like that. Glad he eventually apologized, but still. Just be a professional.

  4. He said it because he felt Pierce was being written too racist. He said it because he didn't want Pierce being as racist as they've continued to write him.

I understand where Chevy's coming from, but this is still extremely unprofessional. There have got to be better ways to object to what the writers have given you than acting out like he has in several instances now.

  5. Not sure I get understanding anyone using a racial slur out of frustration but that's just me. I don't see how using a racial slur gets across the fact that his character is being written too racist. He was struggling with dialogue and that is the word that pops out of his mouth? Okay right. There are so many better ways to handle the frustrations with his job. Apologies and excuses still don't erase the fact that he used a very offensive word in the presence of his coworkers especially Brown and Glover. Totally ridiculous.

  6. Oh, Chevy...Don't, just don't.

  7. I completely agree with this!!!!
And even as a black woman the n-word has never popped out of my mouth in a moment of frustration or anxiety. Chevy is a mess. Maybe they should just write the character off the show, it might make him happier.

  8. Seriously? Come on! its just a word! I understand why people would be offended, i truly do, but it really is just a word. And going all PC on it just makes it worse. Its not waht you say but how and why you say it. Yes it was unprofessional and downright unnecessary but making a big deal over it and going so far as to report it as news is even more offensive than the word ever could be.
And before anyone calls me a racist, bigot, etc... Im Jewish and i was born and raised in Europe and grew up with many insensitive, insulting anti-semitic slurs thrown at me. And what i've learned from them is that if you don't make a big deal out of it....guess what.....it won't be! There are always, ALWAYS going to be people like that around. Personally, i believe my job is to continue on with my life and don't let something so puny and ridiculous as a WORD hurt me.

  9. I totally agree with you. I'm caucasian and would be extremely offended by the use of such word. Brown and Glover must have felt very angry.

  10. Yet another reason to dislike this man, it is never acceptable to racist language. Never.

  11. If you listen closely, you can hear Dan Harmon chuckling quietly. C'mon Chevy....

  12. Chevy Chase is a dick. Read any interviews, he has openly said that doing sitcom are the lowest of the low. I am not surprised at all by reading about this. I wonder how long it will take for him to get written off the show.

  14. Really?
    Really??!
We don't have time for this nonsense: you should be focusing on getting the show back on the freaking air!

  15. I'm offended by this and agree with it at the same time

  16. Is there any chance at all he thought he was back on Saturday Night Live and mistook Donald Glover for Richard Pryor?

    Yeah, me neither.

And the longest downward slope in acting history continues.

  17. Oh dear God, people getting offended over racial slurs or getting offended over anything is unbelievably stupid. If you don't let people or their words bother you you'll be much happier. I'm gay and my boyfriend and I both use the word "faggot" freely because we think it's hilarious and it doesn't bother him. He's Mexican and I sometimes teasingly use slurs as a term of endearment which doesn't bother him and personally I think it's been WAYYYY too long since someone has called me a "honkey". Those are my favorite days because it's pretty much the silliest insult I've ever heard. I don't like Chevy Chase but I can't believe he did a formal apology, and the fact that the Community cast and crew would let something so TRIVIAL halt production is pathetic. :)

  18. OK, how about when someone wants to take your rights away and persecute you starts calling you faggot? How about then?

This isn't a case of PETA taking credit for Animal Practice being cancelled. This is a has-been actor who's been granted every break for 40 years and still spits it in everybody's face.

  19. Sounds like you misunderstood me. I never said I understood him using a racial slur out of frustration. I said I understand where he's coming from. In other words, I understand him being frustrated with Pierce being written so racist. That's COMPLETELY different from being okay with someone using a racial slur.

  20. Tired of Chevy Chase drama getting more publicity than the show. He needs to go.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh god this is so pathetic. Another example of PC gone mad... I don't see any other racist/homophobic slurs being treated with the same reaction.

    ReplyDelete
  22. So, like, couldn't the mortally offended parties just call Chevy a big bad name and then they could all get back to work instead of holding up production like a bunch of children?

    ReplyDelete
  23. No, I didn't misunderstand you at all. I understood you very clearly.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Wow, so saying the "n-word" in a nice soft tone would make a difference? You are more offended that the press is covering his racial slur than him actually saying it. Seriously lol? The "n-word" is always offensive no matter what the context. Wow.

It never ceases to amaze me when people have contempt for negative reactions to racist behavior but make excuses for the actual person who made the comment. Being offended by racial slurs (any slur for that matter) is never "making a big deal" or overreacting. Not to mention, what professional uses language like that in the workplace.

    ReplyDelete
  25. How do you know why he said it? Maybe he uses that word all the time or maybe not but there is no logical reason for him to use the "n word" especially at work. Why try to explain his behavior for using the "n word"? It's disgusting. I don't think it would make his co-workers feel better to know WHY he said it. He can always say to the writers "You know my character is being written to racist" instead of that word.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Totally agree!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Did you forget the Grey's Anatomy situation where Isaiah Washington got *fired* for calling TR Knight a homophobic slur? It's happened.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Then why did you say that I said something in my post that I didn't say?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I didn't try to explain his behavior. I just repeated what was in the article... I agree that there were better ways to say he disapproved of the way his character was being written, and in fact, I already said that in my last post.

  30. I can see NBC pulling the plug on this show at the end of the season

  31. Who cares. Why is race such a big fucking deal?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Try opening up a history book, and reading why is was such a big fucking deal.
