This is the first time in the show's entire run that we have crucial information that the Liars don't have. I mean sure, it's mildly sick and extremely twisted to see Spencer loving up with someone who's actually working against her. But it's also insanely awesome and extremely genius. Can you imagine the consequences this will have once it's revealed? The fallout from this will be absolutely delicious, and I have no doubt that Troian Bellisario will knock it out of the park with that material. The fact that she's sleeping with the enemy? Oh my lord, will that ever turn her world upside down! Hanna's best friend Mona was bad enough, but Spencer's boyfriend? That's a whole different ballgame.
I also think it would be incredibly interesting if it turns out that Toby has been the bad guy and Jenna the good guy all along. But because we have always seen things from the Liars' perspectives, it hasn't seemed that way. In their eyes, Toby is on their side because he's Spencer's wonderful boyfriend, so why should they suspect him? And Jenna seems to be acting shady, and certainly has an ax to grind so why shouldn't they suspect her? Having the Liars' POV removed and seeing that Toby is, in fact, a villain was very refreshing and will definitely change the way I view things going forward. In fact, it's already made me question if Jenna really is perhaps a good guy, just misunderstood by the Liars because of their paranoia when it comes to her.
My personal theory is this: Toby is on the A-Team, has been from the very beginning and he sought out a relationship with whoever he could get his hooks into. Emily didn't work out because she's a lesbian, but Spencer certainly fell for his act. Maybe framing him for Ali's murder was part of the A-Team's plan all along to make him look sympathetic and have one of the girls fall for him. And now he's in their inner circle, helping out his devious comrades in taking them down by getting crucial information. It all makes for one seriously sinister scenario, and I really hope the writers have the courage to go there. It would make for some awesome stories if they do.
What do you guys think? Do you think Toby should be an actual member of the A-Team? Is Jenna really a good guy? Leave comments below, and of course, feel free to connect with me on Twitter @carlroberson!
so you're doing PLL reviews too? awsome!
ReplyDeletei think toby is working as an undercover! and he just got into the A-team to protect Spencer! i don't think he's a bad guy, but if he is it would be an incredibly amazing storyline for the show, specially for Spencer!
And i never really pictured jenna as the "good one" til now, and maybe you're right and she is! at this point the writers can do whatever they want with toby and jenna since they are not in the books universe anymore. ( i think for quite some time)
Yep! PLL, Grey's, Scandal, I'll be doing some Once Upon A Time stuff and a few of the upcoming shows as well!
ReplyDeleteI really hope Toby is an actual A-Team member, it would make things so much juicier if that were the case. Plus I'd love to hear his motives for bringing down the girls. The writers can absolutely do what they want at this point, they're basically completely removed from the books minus a few small details.
Cool! I'm gonna be basically following all your reviews!
ReplyDeleteI hope they extend this toby-being-A storyline till the next season! I don't want it to end on 3X25 (or is it 3X24? ) this mistery is really good! And i don't know many different A-team misterys can the writers pull off!
Awesome! I look forward to hearing from you more :) And I also hope it extends into season 4 (I'm pretty sure they're going to have 25 episodes again this season, but I could be wrong)
ReplyDeleteMarlene King, the creator of PLL was asked point blank if Toby could still possibly have good intentions and she said "No" so your theory is a valid one.
ReplyDeleteReally? That's awesome! I must have missed that, was it on twitter?
ReplyDeleteI wished I was shocked when I found out it was Toby but I wasn't (much) manly b/c I suspect everyone anyway especialy after Mona but than again I thought if somone would be A it would be her and it turnt out that way I also have - lets call it crazy idee - about who killed Aly. That includes our four fav. PLL. About Jenna it goes both ways sometime I think she is good than she is bad again and so on I can't figure her out quit jet, but after what she's been through I can blame her the way she acts all the time. But I doubt she is on the A team.
ReplyDeletePLL will have 24 episodes this season.
ReplyDeleteOkay, thanks for clearing that up! I thought maybe it was going to be 25 because of the Halloween episode again.
ReplyDeleteI think Toby is a legitimate member of the "A" Team the more I think about it. Marlene King has stated that Mona did all but 2 things to the girls so Toby very easily could have done them. It makes perfect sense that Toby could have been the one in the bell tower with Ian/Spencer and gave Emily the message. Oliver Goldstick has also stated that Toby does NOT have good intentions with the girls so that makes me think he's been on it the whole time. It will be interesting to see why he's doing it.
ReplyDeleteThat DOES make a lot of sense. He was the one who saved Spencer from Ian and gave Emily the massage, messing with both of the girls he was interested in.
ReplyDeleteOut of everyone in the show Toby has the most motive to go after the Liars. They framed him for blinding Jenna sending him away for 2 years and again nearly framed him for Ali's murder... I knew after they didn't kill him where they did in the books his character was going to be interesting and I'm so glad they have made him A, makes the story so much more twisted and juicy.
ReplyDeleteToby was with Spencer when A gave Emily the massage
ReplyDeleteToby was with Spencer when A gave Emily the massage
ReplyDeleteI had that same thought about Toby being alive in TV universe, it's all new and fresh with Toby from here on out and I like that!
ReplyDeleteThere's just no way that Toby is undercover just because he told Spencer he would find out what's happening! The A Team wouldn't just allow him to be part of it just like that, specially because he's dating one of their targets! He must be with them for a while! Idk if from the start, but that would be great!
ReplyDeleteAnd, let's keep in mind that when Spencer started to be a "person of interest" in Ali's murder back in Season 1, was the same time Toby and her were getting "too friendly"! Coincidence? Don't think so... ;D
Spencer was the only character that was given a chance to join the A team by Mona at the season finale last year and maybe it was because of her connection to Toby. I think Toby has been on the A team for awhile. If Mona offered Spencer to join the A team than maybe she is not part of their motivation...just a means to an end.
ReplyDeleteI think I knew that Toby was with the A team when he "brought" back Dr Sullivan. Come on! How would he know where she was and how to find her?
ReplyDeleteno he wasn't watching it now, Spencer, is with Jenna, and she is calling her a terrior, and begging her to stop digging, so that leaves toby or garrett for the exact time that emily was getting the massage
ReplyDeleteHe was with her, I have it on now. Spencer stayed home to sort through Ian's things, Toby is helping her. Just after Emily goes into the massage, there is a scene with Toby still at Spencers, looking through yearbooks, the next time we see Toby is after the massage, and he's still with Spencer, they've left the house and spotted Aria with Jason. Emily had already had the massage and left by the time Jenna showed up at the Hastings house and talked to Spencer, that was later. The massage had to have been someone else. I actually did initially think it had been him until I rewatched and realised that it couldn't have been.
