Community - Season 4 - Episode 4.01 will feature an hommage to...

8 Sept 2012

The Hunger Deans Games !

Joel McHale knows what you're thinking : "Fans will see these pictures and go, 'Dammit, they've tried to make this show mainstream! They're trying to steal the Two and a Half Men audience! They're going to be like, 'What - Is this an episode of The Middle?'".

That's about as likely as Dean Pelton entering a room in low-key fashion. Despite the exit of series creator Dan Harmon and the changing of the guard, Community apparently will still strive to be weird, surprising, and... you know, Community. In the season 4 premiere, you'll be treated to a parody of - or shall we say, tribute to - The Hunger Games.

When the Greendale student records seem to be lost, Dean Pelton stages a Hunger Games-like competition to determine enrollment in a class called The History of Ice Cream.

Which raises the question : there's actually a class at Greendale called The History of Ice Cream? "Ice cream is something that people eat every day and they probably don’t know its origin story", deadpans McHale. "Fuck you and your elitist I-don't-need-to-know-about-my-frozen-treats-and-where-they-came-from attitude".

Jeff not only competes in the games, he even performs an elaborate tango with Dean Pelton, who dons multiple dresses in the episode. "He will arouse and (mostly) repulse you all at once". McHale also offers this tease about another part of the premiere : "it is an hommage to something that kids in the late '80s and early '90s watched on Saturday mornings".

The Capitol strongly advises you to enjoy the following photos before continuing your countdown to the season premiere (Friday, October 19 at 8:30pm on NBC).

And there's this video of Joel McHale on the set of Sons of Anarchy (no apparent spoilers), I thought it'd be nice to include it :

Sons of Anarchy premieres next Tuesday.

  1. While I'm not a big Hunger Games fan I'm really excited for Community to be back after all that petitioning :)

  2. Part of me knows that if anyone can make this awesome, its Community. But on the other hand, it seems like they're going for a bigger, more recent movie than some other movies they've paid homage to in the past. Still, cautiously optimistic!

  3. Hmm, vaguely optomistic about this, I only really know the new show runners from Happy Endings but that's in a bit of a similar vein to Community in the sense that it's quite referntial. Will obviously see how it goes.

  5. I have a good feeling about it. I will miss Dan heading it, but we've got to keep the faith in the stars and everyone else who has been a part of it. Plus out of all the shows to have people take it over, Happy Endings is by far the best they could have gotten. #sixseasonsandamovie

  11. I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm hoping that by "broadening" the show they mean that instead of a "My Dinner with Andre" homage they're doing "Hunger Games", not that they're going to tone down the weirdness or meta references.
