Bates Motel - Norman Bates Cast

14 Sept 2012

After an exhaustive search for a young man to take over the iconic role immortalized by Anthony Perkins in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 masterpiece Psycho, A&E's new prequel series, Bates Motel, has cast its Norman Bates.

The part has gone to 20-year-old English lad Freddie Highmore, who first gained notoriety opposite Johnny Depp in 2004's Finding Neverland. Depp and Highmore re-teamed a year later on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with Highmore playing lucky Golden Ticket winner Charlie Bucket.

  1. This is one of the strangest castings I've ever heard. He's a fine actor, but he just plain is not Norman Bates!!!! I'm sure he'll do a good job, but I just can't see it yet.

  2. That's...surprising. I do think he's a good actor but as Norman Bates?? I guess I'll judge it when I see something.

  3. Very much a surprise casting, but I think it could be brilliant in the end!

Highmore is a good actor, who is still learning his craft, but he has captured some truly memorable characters in his films. He has the look of a young Norman and I'm more interested in this project now than I was before....

  4. Along with Vera Farmiga, this project has some great casting. I'm still unsure about the premise but I do like the cast so far.
