I'm a newbie to the SpoilerTV writing team this season, so I thought I'd kick things off by firstly introducing myself with a brief piece about what I do, the shows I follow, and the things I'll be writing about this season.
Firstly, my name is Jimmy. I live in New Zealand, and I run a television statistics website that is becoming more popular by the day, called SeriesMonitor (www.seriesmonitor.com). Through some unrelated content I posted to SpoilerTV recently, myself and the awesome admins got talking, and the result is me writing a bit about the statistics for around 20 different television series this season.
I began work on SeriesMonitor as a bit of a hobby project back in February this year, with the first show being ABC's Castle. The site was such a hit with Castle fans that I decided to add more and more shows to the site over the past few months, a number which now totals 20 different TV shows, with all shows featuring comprehensive statistics on ratings and audience analysis with extensive tables, graphs, and episode guides. At the moment, the site holds information for over 1280 individual episodes, across 60 seasons, with these numbers set to grow significantly over the 2012-13 TV season.
When I write for SpoilerTV, I will frequently link back to SeriesMonitor because all the information is there, thus it saves a lot of unnecessary copy and paste action on my part. I will be posting a lot of graphs as well, in particular the ratings and audience graphs for various shows from the upcoming TV season, and seasons gone by. I have a lot of content, and I'm really looking forward to sharing it with you throughout the season.
Below is an example of a season comparison ratings graph for ABC's Castle. All of the 20 shows on SeriesMonitor contain this sort of information. Below that, is a graph showing the all time audience for Castle, across all four seasons to date, alongside the lead-in the show had on the night.

| Notice how Season 4 (red) had a much weaker second half of the season than its previous two seasons (orange & blue) |

| Castle is the red line, the lead-in is blue. Dancing With The Stars is the show responsible for such strong lead-in performance for parts of the series |
We all know that statistics is what makes the TV industry go round. Good stats for a show means the network is getting a good return on its investment, the fans are happy, and the advertisers are getting their money's worth. It's like one big happy family, a win-win-win. While it's great to predict what's going to happen, accurately predicting the ratings and audience numbers for a TV show is notoriously difficult, which is why I prefer to look at trends in past tense rather than trying to forecast the next result, so most of what I write will be centered around trends, how they are changing, with comparisons to previous seasons, other shows, etc. Hopefully you get the idea.
I will be focusing on the stats, while other writers will be looking at aspects like cancellation indexes, cast contracts, and other stuff along those lines. For your information the shows that SeriesMonitor features, and the ones I'll be paying more particular attention to, are Bones, Castle, Community, Criminal Minds, Game of Thrones, Glee, Grey's Anatomy, Last Resort, Modern Family, NCIS, Once Upon A Time, Perception, Person of Interest, Revenge, Revolution, Scandal, The Big Bang Theory, The Mentalist, The Mob Doctor, and 666 Park Avenue. It's a fairly comprehensive list of shows, including 5 shows that are new to screens this season.
Finally, the shows I am really enjoying at the moment are Castle, Scandal, Bones, Person Of Interest, Criminal Minds, NCIS, The Mentalist, and Perception. The freshman shows coming this fall that I'll be checking out include ABC's Last Resort, FOX's The Mob Doctor, and NBC's Revolution.
So hopefully that explains a bit about what I'll be doing with SpoilerTV this season. If you have any questions, post them in the Disqus comments box below, flick me a tweet (@SeriesMonitor), or contact me through the SeriesMonitor website, Make sure you visit, and have a good look around the site, and if you have any ideas for improvement, please get in touch!!

Awesome idea always good to see new material added to the website. welcome can't wait to see the analysis as the new fall season goes along
ReplyDeletethanks jimmy good job :)
ReplyDelete:-) I'm looking forward to a great TV season, and hopefully the statistics are in favour of all the shows!!
ReplyDeleteHello! Looking forward to read your articles;)
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to writing them!! Are there any shows that you're interested in in particular??
ReplyDeleteHey there. Your website has a lot of interesting stuff to read, it's usually hard to come across this type of data. So I am looking forward to your analysis. From the shows you mentioned, I watch (or am I planning on watchig the first seasons of): Bones, Castle, Community, Game of Thrones, Grey's Anatomy, Last Resort, Modern Family, Once Upon A Time, Person of Interest, Revenge, Revolution, Scandal, The Big Bang Theory, and 666 Park Avenue!
ReplyDeleteHey Jimmy! Great website.
ReplyDeleteCan you add HIMYM to your wabsite?
Thank you.
Great job.
Hey Jimmy, welcome!! So glad you'll be apart of the STV community! You have a great website, looking forward to the new season!
ReplyDeleteThis is interesting, I'll definitely be checking in on these. In terms of Castle, while DWTS's clearly is a great lead in, I'm impressed with how often Castle has built up from really terrrible lead-ins. Go Castle!
ReplyDeleteDancing With The Stars is indeed a very good lead-in for Castle, and this season should be even more interesting thanks to the all-star cast returning for this season.
ReplyDeleteNBC's Revolution will have The Voice as a lead-in - and Revolution is scheduled alongside Castle, and Hawaii Five-0, so the three way duel for the 10|9c Mondays timeslot will be fascinating to watch unfold
Thanks for the suggestion. For this season, I plan on sticking with the 20 current shows, seeing how things pan out. I will have a pretty large workload to get through for the next few months, but if I feel there's room for a few more shows at the end of this season, I will definitely be adding more!!
ReplyDeleteI want the site to be the best of its kind on the internet - hopefully it's getting close!! As for the shows you're following, that's quite a list, with plenty of variety. Only a couple of weeks until the new season begins!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the complements!! Very much appreciated :-) I'm really excited to be a part of the team!!
ReplyDeleteExcited to read your articles. Some of the shows you listed are among my favorites and I'm always interested to hear what others think and see some stats as well
ReplyDeleteWell Revolution seems a better choice for NBC than Smash. It sets up a DVR dilemma for me, which Smash never did. Currently I watch & DVR Castle, plus DVR H50. I am curious about Revolution, so now I have to decide between it and H50. [Castle's my #1 show, nothing moves it. :) ]
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the site/ team!
ReplyDeleteInteresting site....
I like reading the research, statistical analysis and actual facts about series and/or networks. I always find it more compelling than random accolades by viewers. I don't always like doing said research to get at the facts.... so a site like yours is appreciated! XD
If you wanted to see a show flop, then Smash was ideal. Revolution will have to be quick to establish itself to stand out from 2 series that are pretty well established in the timeslot. The same dilemma faces Bones and The Mob Doctor, over on FOX at 8 & 9pm respectively, who will have to push through competition from The Voice & DWTS to stand out - bearing in mind both The Voice and DWTS are 2 hour shows
ReplyDeleteThat's the niche I hope to fill!! Glad to hear!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliments!! I'm trying to steer clear of reviewing individual shows - I want to focus on several shows in one post, briefly touching on them regarding statistics, not so much reviewing the episode itself
ReplyDeleteGreat intro Jimmy, welcome to the site.
ReplyDeleteCan't ask for more than that :-) Cheers!
ReplyDeleteWelcome aboard Jimmy. I'm a sucker for stats.
ReplyDeleteEver since following Fringe's nail biting encounter with the cancellation bear I've been hooked
Great write up Jimmy can't wait to read your articles throughout the year!
ReplyDeleteHello Jimmy! i gotta say, i thouroughly enjoyed your site! i went for person of interest b/c, well, i just have to click anyhting having to do with the best show ever, and that stuff was cool, then the other shows i watched. then i found myself reading about shows i don't even watch b/c it's just so awesome. looking forward to reading your articles and thank you so much for doing it. i tried to calculate the time it must take you and i almost gave myself a headache:)
ReplyDeleteGlad to have you on board Jimmy! I did some work on ratings statistics last spring here on SpoilerTV. The "In the Hot Seat" polls were pretty successful last year so we'll probably do them again this year. They were polls for real shows based solely on Ratings. If you would be interested in helping on it at all feel to free to shoot me an email and I'll explain it some more. Browe1485@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI estimate I've spent over 400 hours on the site to date, and it could be more!! But the positive comments from everyone make it all worthwhile, and I'm having so much fun building it!
ReplyDeleteCheers Mig, good to hear :-)
ReplyDeleteHi and Welcome, Jimmy! This is amazing! It will neat to follow along and discuss what we think everything means!
ReplyDeleteglad to see you on here and not just on the Castle boards, Lol! (we are both OCD Castle addicts!)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteHi and Welcome, Jimmy! This is amazing! It will neat to follow along and discuss what we think everything !
ReplyDeleteYup that sounds right :)
ReplyDeleteWOW This is fabulous (It's interesting that on some cases you even have the lead in included with the numbers, it certainly sheds a new life to those ratings) I bet this is a lot of hard work and time consuming too! Thank you for doing it and sharing it with us. I'm definitively "monitoring" your site ;)
