How I Met Your Mother - CBS in talks for season nine

16 Jul 2012

CBS and 20th Century Fox TV have begun negotiations on ordering at least one more additional season of "How I Met Your Mother."

The series' unexpected ratings rejuvenation last season renewed interest from both sides in extending its run beyond the upcoming eighth season CBS already committed to, but that could be tough given all the dealmaking that needs to get done: Contracts for creators and exec producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas don't extend beyond the 2012-13 season, nor do deals for any of the five stars. CBS' two-year license deal with 20th expires next May as well. Reps for CBS, 20th and Bays and Carter declined to comment.

At this point, sources caution CBS and 20th have engaged in only preliminary talks, with no timetable in place for getting all these deals wrapped up. But the good news for "Mother" fans is that they're even talking about the future, which wasn't the case until relatively recently.

  1. I'm fine with season eight being it, tbh. Unless season nine is about Ted and The Mother. Barney and Robin are endgame - I'm happy.

  2. I may be the only one but if they get another extension im not watch this anymore. They already have overstayed their welcome.just show the mother.

B/c we know what is going to happen if they get
    another season::
    more dragging
    more fillers
    more failed relationships
    more of their f@...king twists.

  4. I want season 8 to be the last. I think if this happens Jason Segal will only sign on to do 13 episodes a season or something.

  5. Only way I want season 9 is if the "Mother" is a series regualr and we see her and Ted together the whole season.

  6. If he does I definitely would want a 22 episode Season 9, and 10, can't stand him. He brings down the show imo, has done since Season 3, would love to see a Marshall-less HIMYM.

That said I wouldn't mind Season 8 being the last, if it does continue I hope the Robin and Barney relationship is far in the background where it belongs (not the characters, despite Robin being dragged down by it last season, she's still my favourite character) and they focus on Ted (who was by far the best character in Season 7, thanks to pregnancy ruining Lily, and Barney dragging down Robin) and the mother.

  8. The show is called "How I MET Your Mother", so it really doesn't make sense to me to continue the show beyond meeting the mother (unless the continuation is purposefully labeled as a spin-off/sequel show), and it certainly looks like Ted is going to need to meet the mother by the end of Season 8 for the timetables to all work out (though I suppose they could push it to Season 9 if they absolutely had to.

I don't know. I do feel like 8 seasons is a perfect, round number for a comedy to end on though.

  9. Holy hell. They should be in negotiations with someone who owns a time machine so they could make a deal to make HIMYM a six season series.

  10. I was really hoping this would be the last. Time for them to shift things and focus on the where they want them to end.

  11. I so second that. HIMYM's been quite gut wrenching this season with all the to and fro with Barney and Robin, I'm just glad their future is settled and we can concentrate on Ted

  12. Frankly, after sitting through the last season finale, I wish it was just cancelled. Now I have to wade through Robin/Barney crap to actually see something I give a damn about. I hated it the first time I had to sit through it and it's going to be ten times worse a second time around.
