The 2012 STV Favourite TV Series Competition - Day 12 - How I Met Your Mother vs. Community & 24 vs. Battlestar Galactica

8 Jul 2012

Hey guys,

In the last round of polls we saw Once Upon A Time stake a strong claim for its chances at doing well in the competition, smashing Person of Interest with 63.41% of a vote many expected would be stronger. Also Friends easily disposed of Stargate SG-1 and made it through to the next round.

Today sees two of the most popular network sitcoms of the current time, How I Met Your Mother and Community do battle in a poll that would be tough to call. HIMYM has bigger ratings numbers, yet Community possesses a large online fan base that should give both shows something to think about.

Also today we have one of the most iconic shows of the new millennium, 24, challenging one of the most successful and popular remakes of the last few years in Battlestar Galactica. It's another poll which is tough to call...

If you want to see the draw for the rest of the competition, and see which show will take on which other show then head HERE for a look. Let the voting begin!

  9. I tried watching HIMYIM cuz I luv Aly Hannigan, but turns out it's just not a very good show - characters almost as shallow and annoying as "Friends". Community, on the other hand is occasionally flawed but frequently amazing,

I am currently watching S2 of 24 on netflix, only 3 episodes left, but probably won't watch further seasons - plot convolutions are just too much and characters ultimately not at all believable. I'm old enuff to remember the original BSG show and how miserable that was - never expected the remake to amount to much of anything, but it is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.

  10. I was very similar - I tried to get into 24, but it just didn't hit me as something I wanted to watch every week. BSG on the other hand has this reputation with people who don't know the show, to be "just another space show", but it's so much more than that. Aside from it's space setting, it's one of the most human shows I've ever seen. It's in my top 5 favorite shows of all-time for a good reason.

  13. Easily community on the first poll!
And of course BSG on the second!! But it had to be against 24? :(

  14. speaking of comedies, where the heck is The Office and Modern Family?

  15. Just Battlestar Galactica for me today, which is in my Top 5 of favorite shows!I hadn't even heard about the original when I started watching,so I didn't know anything about it.
Mind blowing series with amazing cast!

Community. Easily one of the best comedies on tv. I wish more people knew about its hilarious awesomeness!!!
Don't watch either in the other poll but my dad likes 24 so I voted for that one

  18. I loved BSG,but it just can't compare to 24. 24 have at least 5 great seasons, where as BSG wasn't consistently great, imo anyway. Its too bad they are running against each other.

  19. I voted for Community over How I Met your Mother. The other two are shows I really ought to get on DVD, because they are both well-loved here, but as I haven't seen them yet, didn't vote.

  20. HIMYM and 24! :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love HIMYM, but had to vote for Community.

    ReplyDelete
  22. At one point it would have been HIMYM over Community but Community is just so awesome and creative, whereas HIMYM has gone stale.

Battlestar Galactica. The casting in that show was complete genius.

  24. I went with HIMYM (or How Barney and Robin finally got together as I refer to it lately), even though I love Community the first three seasons of HIMYM was amazing and love the little mysteries and great debates, it's a show that really engages fans (for better or worse). Community is just something cool to watch, IMHO. And hands down BSG. I love sci-fi and this is the show that started it all for me. Re-runs on a Saturday afternoon, who could ask for more.

  25. Community and Battlestar Galactica!

Community is a really smart, strange, and engaging comedy, and while it's not perfect, I do prefer it to HIMYM, even if I think that show is pretty great as well.

BSG is one of my favorite dramas now...A defining science fiction television show not only in the late 70s but also the epic remake in 2004 - its influence on science fiction is evident in a lot of other series/films/games that I enjoy as well. Lots of mystery, great acting, and all the fraks you'll ever need...

    ReplyDelete
  26. Totally! I'd avoided it for a while because I thought it was going to be another weird Star Trek-space station show and I was so wrong and so glad I finally broke down and watched it. One of my favorite shows.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 24 and HIMYM

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love HIMYM... but for me it still does not reach the sheer awesomeness of Community, which has taken the spot as my favorite comedy ever.

Then 24 as it is in my top 5 favorite tv shows. Jack Bauer trumps Chuck Norris in my book.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Interesting choices today...

I never really could get into Community so HIMYM by default.

I liked 24, but I always thought it was predictable and formulaic. A good entertaining series, but I did grow tired of people (mostly Jack) saying they were "fine" when they were near dead, just shot, revived or wounded.... Just saying.

BSG was ground breaking in many ways and it was science Fiction at its best. Not about the newest VFX on the market, but about the humanity of its chracters. Brilliant stuff.

    How I met Your Mother
    Battlestar Galactica

  30. looks like both of mine are losing, I voted for Community and 24

    ReplyDelete
  31. Community and BSG for me. I only watched the first season of 24, and while I really liked it, it seemed a bit too long and repetitive for me to continue enjoying it going forward. BSG, despite a very rough end of Season 2/few episodes throughout Season 3, was just great throughout, and the mystery and thematic aspects of the show just really appealed to me in a way that I know the rest of 24 wouldn't have.

As for the comedies, I had a really hard time deciding between them. HIMYM easily has the better emotional episodes, but Community easily has the better creative episodes (even though HIMYM has some great creative episodes of their own, and Community isn't totally without emotional episodes). Both shows have written most of their main characters in ways that have hurt them rather than helped them, and I'm not sure which set of main characters I prefer overall. HIMYM's seasons are all in the "okay" to "pretty great" range, while Community's seasons range from "disappointing with a few really good episodes" to "really awesome". So with all of this back and forth I just decided to vote for the show that was currently losing. :P

  32. I voted for BSG. It was a wonderful and rivetting series. One of a kind; of a kind that few shows have been able to repeat in quality and tension.
The only little quibble I have is the ending which I didn't like, but what's one episode against all the pleasure the others gave leading up to it!

24 was intersting for the first seasons and then it became a bit too repetitive

    ReplyDelete
  33. Friends wasn't annoying! If you think so, then there is something wrong with your sense of humor.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Community and 24.

HIMYM just isn't as good since episode 4.06 (yep, the altar scene was the very moment the show started to have more bad moments than good ones, imo) and while I love BSG and I'm grateful for what this show has done to science-fiction series (although except Caprica I can't find any successor right now), it did have its bad moments especially in the middle of both seasons 2 and 3.

Plus I'm just a sucker for 24. I don't care if Jack is "fine" after nearly being killed, I don't care if it's not "believable" or "realistic" (just because it's in pretend real time doesn't mean it has be like real life, we're talking about a show revolving around terrorist plots, it's not a family drama). Yes, at some point it felt repetitive (like in season 6) but overall it's just entertainment at its best, filled with suspense and action, and ambitious enough to take advantage of the serial format like never before.

  35. I said it on a previous post - but I just couldn't get into 24. BSG I wanted to watch the next episode as soon as one ended because it felt so human - so real. No offense intended to 24 in any way of course.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Community by far for me in the first one although I do enjoy HIMYM reruns. For the other, I voted against 24. I started out liking that show but it got progressively worse for me. From what I've seen of BSG it is definitely intriguing. It's on my summer watch list so I can see more than bits and pieces.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I would say that Friends could certainly could get annoying at times although overall I really liked it. Still there is nothing wrong with anyone's sense of humor if they didn't. Just like everything in a poll, an opinion is just an opinion - none better than the rest.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I voted HIMYM and 24 in this round

    ReplyDelete
  39. First pairing was pretty easy - HIMYM is a good show, but it's fairly formulaic and I've only watched it sporadically and now it feels that they're really dragging out the mother story so much that I don't really care about that anymore, and Community is definitely far more creative and just different so it gets my vote. Really tough call for the second pair for 2 shows I really love... but in the end, I narrowly voted 24 ahead...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Wow,i can't believe how close 24 & BSG is!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Second poll was cruel. I can't bring myself to vote against either. 24 was an addiction for several years. It had some weaker seasons but it was groundbreaking and changed TV. I recently caught up with BG and was instantly hooked. I watched the whole series through twice within a month. The final season and the ending were weaker, but it's still a great TV show. So I haven't voted for either.

Didn't vote in the first one either because I don't watch Community and the other never pulled me in.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Less than a point. It could go either way.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I watch/ed all of these. Easily, going with Community. HIMYM can be great. But it can be not great too. Community makes me laugh more consistently and I just think it's so clever and fun.

LOVE both 24 and BSG. In the end I went 24 because it's an exciting thrill ride. BSG is more cerebral and that is a perfectly fine thing to be. I twas close for me. Ask me again tomorrow and I might change my mind, you know?

    ReplyDelete
  44. HIMYM but I do love Community and 24!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Now that was close!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yes, at least BSG pulled through narrowly.

    ReplyDelete
  47. So Say We All (glad BSG advanced)
