Supernatural - Ultimate Episode Round 1N - Polls
17 Jun 2012
Polls SupernaturalLots of great discussion in our last round, which I'm sure will be carried into round two. Heading to round 2 will be The French Mistake, Reading is Fundamental, Slash Fiction, and All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1. Leaving the contest are Playthings, Wishful Thinking (by a mere 7 votes), Provenance, and Family Matters. While being an okay day for my prediction list (called Wishful Thinking poll wrong but rest right), it was a miserable day for my episode picks. Today looks to be better. Don't forget to nominate your favorite quotes from Fresh Blood and A Very SPN Christmas. One of my favorite quotes of all time gets nominated today. "You fudgin' touch me again, I'll fudgin' kill you." Simply classic! Happy voting!

1. Survival of the Fittest - Because even a weaker finale is still a SPN finale. It should move on to round 2 for that alone. Plus the ending 10 or so minutes was some excellent TV. Since Houses of the Holy is utterly forgettable (except for the filleted by a hooker from God quote), SotF gets it.
ReplyDelete2. It's a Terrible Life - I love Dream a Little Dream of Me. I love the Bobby storyline and the brothers going into Bobby's head. However, It's a Terrible Life wins by episode placement. It came at a time when I was starting to question whether Supernatural would remain my favorite show or if Burn Notice was going to take its place. Season 4's angst had gotten unbearable and this episode was exactly what I needed. It was a breath of fresh air and I enjoyed seeing the brothers working together even as strangers. Plus who hasn't felt like Sam did when he clobbered the phone. This episode got me through the remaining sucky episodes of season 4.
3. Both - I think Meet the New Boss is better. I'm voting for Malleus Maleficarum. Meet the New Boss is going to win this by a landslide.
4. Repo Man - In all honesty, I don't care for either episode. Still, deranged demon-possessed serial killer beats fairies every time.
Survival of the Fittest - I like Houses of the Holy just fine, I think it's a strong episode. Survival wins for me, simply for the amazing way it ended. It had a great final act and the cliff hanger was unexpected, at least by me.
ReplyDeleteDream a Little Dream of Me - I love this episode because Dean finally admits his own worth, and decides that he's not okay just going to hell. This realization is a big step for Dean. I have a feeling this episode is going to get trounced in the poll...but it's my definite choice. I like It's a Terrible Life, but after all the emotion of On The Head of A Pin, to have it open up in this not quite Alt!Universe was jarring to me, and I was left unsatisfied. I've grown to like it more over the years, but it still rubs me wrong that there wasn't more of a carry over of the emotions from the previous episode.
Meet the New Boss - I hate the title to the other episode. I can never remember how to spell it. It's again, a strong episode, but the more I watch season 3 the less I like Katie Cassidy as Ruby. She's far too snarky and bitchy and while I enjoyed that at the start, now it's just grating. I can't imagine that Ruby, in that incarnation, would have been able to manipulate Sam the way she did when she came back. But she had Sam's grief to play with so...I don't know. I digress. Witches are also not among my favorite SPN monsters. Meet the New Boss, however, was an incredible opener. Very strong and there was a lot happening. Also anytime we get to see Dean working on the car is a-okay with me.
Repo Man - I DISLIKE CLAP YOUR HANDS IF YOU BELIEVE MORE THAN ANY OTHER SPN EPISODE EVER MADE. That said, I can enjoy moments of it, but it is quite literally ranked #149 on my list. So - Repo Man wins by default! I find it interesting that these are both Ben Edlund-penned episodes. He really is hit or miss. But Repo Man is good. Good premise, and the start of Sam's decline, even if it was somewhat badly executed, it was done well in this episode.
too funny...your reasons for liking It's a Terrible Life are my reasons for choosing Dream a Little Dream of Me over it in the poll. I can't say I dislike it because I don't, but I won't vote for it.
ReplyDeleteAll I've got to say is TEAM GODSTIEL, ALL THE WAY!
ReplyDeleteSame here. I had a problem with most of the "filler" episodes during the epic season four because I was totally in awe with the angels, Alastair, Dean dealing with his time in hell and Sam going darkside :-)
ReplyDeleteThat is a great scene. Although the DemonDean at the end is always jarring. There is much to love about Dream a Little Dream.
ReplyDeleteHe has issues that I find make his work problematic, but strictly from a writing perspective, I pretty much like everything Edlund has done.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that Clap Your Hands has got going for it is the. Best. Soulless Sam. of any episode.
Oh, I hope the Dream a Little Dream fans come out in force! lol. For some reason I feel like I'll be more heartbroken for this one to lose than I was over Nightshifter.
ReplyDeleteRuby 1.0 was definitely overplayed.
Yeah, there's pretty much nothing left that can happen to the car (aside from annihilation) that's worse than what happened in The Devil's Trap...but it was fun to see the different moments of the car repair, like the paint job. And of course Dean proclaiming that he "should do this professionally" after Bobby says the car's looking good.
Survival of the Fittest, Baby is back, Sam is alone, Dean and Cas in a very bad place.
ReplyDeleteDream a Little Dream of Me, I enjoyed the "other" Dean telling Dean things he needed to hear. It's a Terrible Life was a good ep, but I enjoyed the dream walking better.
Almost voted for Malleus Maleficarum just for Screamin Jay Hawkins "I Put A Spell On You", but going with Meet The New Boss, loved Death in this(but I have loved Julian in every ep), Sam seeing Lucifer.
Clap Your Hands has some of my favorite quotes, Dean to Sam as he is being chased, "Empathy, Sam, empathy" And Dean explaining the Fairy in the microwave to Sam, "She had nipples" I enjoyed this ep almost as much as The French Mistake. Sam was just so clueless. lol
I loved seasons 4 & 5, enjoy getting my eyes cleaned out ever so often and boy did Swan Song do it. lol
ReplyDeleteI love White Collar and Suits is right up there with it, in fact I like most of the shows on USA, except Psych.
Fresh Blood Quotes: This has possibly the best brother speech of the series.
ReplyDelete15. Dean: "Question for you - When you called me yesterday, it wasn't to thank me for saving you’re a** was it?" Bela: "No, Gordon Walker paid me to tell him where you were."
14. Lucy: "He was old…like 30."
13. Gordon: "I can wrangle up 3 grand." Bela: "I don't get out of bed for 3 grand."
12. Sam: "Cutting it a little close don't you think." Dean: "Ah, I was chumming the water. It worked didn't it? Ow."
11. Dean: "Was the drug red and thick? Well genius move there. That was vampire blood he dosed you with." Lucy: "What?" Dean: "Yeah you just took a big steaming shot of the nastiest virus out there."
10. "Well it's time. You should know how to fix her. You're going to need to know these things for the future. And besides, that's my job right. Show my little brother the ropes."
9. Sam: "Nice move you pulled back there Dean. Running right at the weapons." Dean: "Well what can I say? I'm a bada**.
8. Dean: "Bela, if we make it out of this alive, the first thing I'm going to do is kill you." Bela: "You're not serious." Dean: "Listen to my voice and tell me if I'm serious."
7. Gordon: "You always keep your family in shackles?" Dixon: "We're still getting to know each other."
6. Dean: " I smell good don't I. I taste even better. Come on. Free lunch."
5. Dean: "Sam I don't need you to sign me a permission slip okay. He's after you not me and he's turbo charged. I want you to stay out of harm's way. I'll take care of it."
4. Dean: "I don't know. Maybe pick up the phone and tell us that a raging psychopath was dropping by." Bela: "Ah, I did fully intend to call. I just got a bit sidetracked."
3. Sam: "Yeah because I've been following you around my entire life. I mean I've been looking up to you since I was 4 Dean. Studying you, trying to be just like my big brother. So yeah I know you. Better than anyone else in the entire world and this is exactly how you act when you're terrified. And I mean I can't blame you. It's just…" Dean: "What?" Sam: "It's just I wish you would drop the show and be my big brother again cuz…just cuz."
2. Dean: "It's just another day at the office. It's a massively dangerous day at the office."
1. Gordon: "Sam Winchester's the Anti-Christ." Bela: "Mmm, I'd heard something about that…" Gordon: "It's true." Bela: "From my good friend the Easter Bunny, who heard it from the Tooth Fairy. Are you off your meds?"
Season 4 and 5 are my favorite seasons to this date. Season 5 being on top for number of myth-arc important or adding, episodes. Season 1 and 2 follow with Season 3 and 6 behind. Season 7 I can't figure out where to put. It's in a whole other catergory. lol I can't decide if it beat Season 4 or failed and is behind like Season 3 and 6. I do know the end of the season run (17, 19-23) was awesome for me along with a few earlier episodes like the first 2, Slash Fiction, HTWFAIM, and Death's Door.
ReplyDeleteI am a huge fan of USA Network. Even the shows I only watch casually are a whole lot better than what I see on other channels.
ReplyDeleteSeason 5 is still amazing and while I was watching it for the first time it was my favorite (as was each season before it!), what it does with the mytharc and wrapping up five years of storytelling is amazing! I definitely enjoy all of seasons 1-5 more than seasons 6 or 7, and they were for the most part good, too (more season 7, I still struggle with enjoying season 6). But my ultimate preference lies in the early seasons. Probably because things were simpler! Once the angels came on board there was so much baggage, which I enjoyed, but when I need a fix of the show, I tend to do a season 2 or 3 episode. If we're ranking seasons I gotta 2/3, 4/1, 5, 7, 6, lol.
ReplyDeleteSurvival of the Fittest
ReplyDeleteDream a Little Dream of Me
Meet the New Boss
Repo Man
The bunny quote from MM is going to be high on my list tomorrow. It was perfect. Lucifer in Repo Man was the pinnacle of his season 7 stay for me.
ReplyDeleteMy season ranking:
ReplyDeleteseason 3 (pre-writers' strike), season 2, season 1, season 7, first half of season 4, season 6, season 3 (post writers' strike), season 5, second half of season 4.
Monster Movie seems to be more divisive than a lot of episodes. I loved it but it's definitely different - not everyone's cup of tea. I tend to like my comedies with a bit more meat on them too. That's why Bad Day at Black Rock will always trump French Mistake for me. Generally I'm not into silly just for silly's sake. I think since SPN does so so many more drama episodes than comedies I is natural for dramas to fill people's top spots. Since we have all been talking about where our favorite episodes rank, I'm thinking that next summer I will do a series of articles about where episodes rank on my list and ask others to share where things fall on theirs. There is bound to be a lot of differences and that always makes for a great conversation starter.
ReplyDeleteFunny, because of Jus In Bello, DALDOM, Mystery Spot, and No Rest For The Wicked, Season 3 post writers strike comes before the pre-strike for me just based on numbers.
ReplyDeleteI only have three episodes (BDABR, Fresh Blood, and AVSC) that I really liked in the first half, though TKAA and Bedtime Stories had their moments.
Jus in Bello, Dream a Little Dream of Me, and Mystery Spot all came before the writers' strike. The only post writers' strike episodes were Ghostfacers, Long-Distance Call, Time is on my Side, and No Rest for the Wicked. Of those the only episode I like was the finale.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch anything on TNT or USA. Used to watch Burn Notice, but somehow lost interest and can't get back in. One of those shows I wish I could though. I want to love it.
ReplyDeleteThere was that USA show back in the day I used to watch and love- oh, the psychic one, forgot the name- the guy got in a car crash, woke up years later and his wife was with another guy. He saw the future. Anyway, loved that one, though I was younger and therefore because of bedtime issues I missed episodes.
Edit: It was "The Dead Zone"
Also used to watch wrestling. Ha, can thank my parents for that. I haven't watched in years now. Got annoying/frustrating.
The channels I have shows on currently in Fall and Summer: CW (3 shows-SPN, TVD, Nikita), CBS (2 shows- Person of Interest, The Mentalist), NBC (3 shows -Grimm, Saving Hope, AGT), ABC (1 show- OUAT), SyFy (2 shows-Warehouse 13, Being Human), ABC Family (1 show- Melissa and Joey), Discovery (3 shows -Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs, Head Games), and Animal Planet stuff (usually watch it in the daytime when nothing good is on-AKA when only soaps are on-meh) I do have some shows I watch when they air though like North Woods Law cause it's filmed in my neck of the woods lol.
I have a couple online shows as well from a channel my cable doesn't get and one from Canada. I watch them on youtube.
In the fall I may have more shows on CW, NBC, and ABC. Depends if I like the pilot ones I want to check out.
the humor in Bad Day at Black Rock was just the right amount. It was just a little more of the usual snark from Dean, and the added physical comedy bits from both guys (but mostly Sam) were great. Such a good episode.
ReplyDeleteOh I see. Oops. When then, I like pre-strike better. XD
ReplyDeleteThe only one out of those four I liked was NRFTW as well.
Some seasons have better halves than others.
ReplyDeleteSurvival of the Fittest
ReplyDeleteDream a Little Dream of Me
Meet the New Boss
Repo Man (Maaannn what a strong and dark standalone episode this was!)
I looked at the first pair and thought...'Now for something completely different.' This set of titles feels different for some reason. Let's get started...
ReplyDelete1) Houses of the Holy -- It came down to moments and character. Sam finding out how Dean felt about God. And the moment with the pole. Survival of the fittest had much going for it and the Impala reappeared...but the moment with the pole pushed Holy ahead.
2) ARGH!!!!! ARGH!!!
3) Had to vote against Meet the New Boss.... This one went to the Witchy ep (can't spell it. I surrender. )
4) Clap Your Hands If You Believe -- microwave fairy. Pachouli. Sam. That lady in the trailer. Easy pick for me.
2) ARGH!!!
very true.
ReplyDeleteHa! I sense you are having trouble picking between Dream a Little Dream of Me and It's a Terrible Life. Two good episodes. I can see why. This poll does seem to have fewer blockbuster episodes if you will and more steady performers than most.
ReplyDeleteReally, season 7 ranks that high? It had such major issues with pacing, and the main villains not being interesting/threatening, and the Winchesters not being the ones driving the action forward...
ReplyDeleteSeason 7 had mytharc problems for sure, but on an episode by episode case I liked or loved more episodes in season 7 than any season since season 3.
ReplyDeleteHouses of the Holy.
ReplyDeleteAn episode I really enjoyed, harbinger of things , good and bad, to come.
The other episode is fast becoming number one on my worst episode finale top seven, and I thought Swan Song could never be ousted from the number one spot!
X
It's a Terrible Life.
A fantastic episode, I love it, although I always feel it doesn't get as much love as it deserves.
I've never really liked the other episode. I find it a bit boring.
X
Malleus Maleficarum.
Witches and demons beat traitorous angels any day. At least one expects them to be bad.
X
Clap your hands if You Believe is not the best of episodes but it's from season six, one of my favourite seasons; it has the brothers at the heart of the story and we get some laughs and good moments eg, "Have you got a bigger cup?"; so it's a win all the way for me. :)
I agree with that.
ReplyDeleteA Very Supernatural Christmas Quotes: This episode has more quips than any sicne season 1. An altogether fabulous epi.
ReplyDelete25. Dean: "Well look at this. Fuel for me and fuel for my Baby. These are awesome. Thanks!" Sam: "Good." Dean: "Merry Christmas bro!" Sam: "Yeah, yeah here. Merry Christmas!"
24. Dean: "So what, Ozzie and Harriet are keeping a pagan god hidden underneath their plastic-covered couch?"
23. Sam: "Nobody ever tells me anything." Dean: "Then quit asking."
22. Madge: "Oh and here we thought you two lazybones were going to sleep straight through all the fun stuff." Dean: "And miss all this, nah we're partiers." Edward: "Isn't he a kick in the pants honey?"
21. Edward: "Not so fast. There's uh rituals to be followed first." Madge: "Oh, we're just sticklers for ritual."
20. Sam: "Here, take this." Dean: "No. No, that's for dad." Sam: "Dad lied to me. I want you to have it." Dean: "You sure." Sam: "I'm sure." Dean: "Thank you Sam. I love it."
19. Sam: "Ha! When you sacrifice to Holdenacar, guess what he gives you in return?' Dean: " Lap dances hopefully."
18. Dean: "Why are you the boy that hates Christmas?"
17. Sam: "Nothing. It's just that uh well you know, Mr. Gung Ho Christmas might have to blow away Santa."
16. Dean: "And all these Martha Stewart wannabes buying these fancy wreaths.." Sam: "Yeah, that was pretty much like putting up a neon sign on your front door saying, "Come kill us."
15. Shop Guy: "Well aren't you a fussy one."
14. Dean: "So this is your theory huh? Santa's shady brother."
13. Dean: "Wreaths huh? Sure you didn't want to ask her about her shoes. I saw some nice handbags in the foyer."
12. Dean: "Oh great. So we're looking for a pimp Santa."
11. Madge: "Yeah, we assimilated. Why we play bridge on Tuesdays and Fridays. We're just like everybody else." Dean: "You're not blending in as smooth as you think lady."
10. Dean: "What's up with Saint Nicotine?"
9. Dean: "What could you possible say that sounds crazy to me?" Sam: "Um, evil Santa." Dean: "Yeah that's crazy."
8. Sam: "Well, we're not dealing with the Anti-Claus." Dean: "What'd Bobby say?" Sam: "Uh, that we're morons."
7. Dean: "This is where Mrs. Wreath lives huh? Well can't you just feel the evil pagan vibe?"
6. The brothers singing Silent Night with the wrong words and badly. "Around the table…"
5. Sam: "So I guess we're dealing with Mr. and Mrs. God? Nice to know."
4. Dean: "So was I right? Is it the serial killing chimney sweep?" Sam: "Yep, it's uh it's actually Dick Van Dyke." Dean: "Who?" Sam: "Mary Poppins." Dean: "Who's that?"
3. Edward: "Well let's see uh fingernail, blood. Ah sweet Peter on a popsicle stick, I forgot the tooth."
2. Dean: "What are you going to tell me next? The Easter Bunny's Jewish."
1. Dean: "Oh you fudgin' touch me again, and I'll fudgin' kill ya." Madge: "Very good."
Urgh! I meant to have the "well there's hell" line as #3 on my list but I completely missed it. Oh well consider that #3 on my list too.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree with you. I voted for the same episodes. There are hardly any season 6 and season 7 episodes, I like more than 1-5 season episodes.
ReplyDeleteI loved Dean and his little woman that had nipples, that he cooked in the microwave. Funny stuff that I don't want reigned in, lol Anything that gets slapstick out of Jensen is OK with me.
ReplyDeleteSuits came very close to knocking WC out as my favorite USA series, but I love Fairly Legal for Leo and Ben, and Covert Affairs for Auggie. I have tried Psych several times, but it is just to silly and I give up after a couple eps.
ReplyDeleteAll I can say is give the USA series a shot, they are some of the best shows on TV..IMHO. ;)
ReplyDeleteI am excited about this fall, thank goodness for my new Hopper that records 6 shows at once. lol
ReplyDelete"that's not an episode, that's a quote party!" Ha! That pretty much sums it up. Snark from start to finish. I love the Carrigans as villains.
ReplyDeleteSam's big speech in Fresh Blood gets me every time. It's simply perfect.
ReplyDeleteRoboSam was definitely at his funniest in CYHiYB. Those two quotes from Fresh Blood are my favorite scenes.
ReplyDeleteEasy for me Houses Of The Holy over Survival any day. IATL over by a country mile, MM over MTNB any day and Clap over RM simply because Soulless Sam was a riot where as a good 50% of RM was wasted on a pointless guest character.
ReplyDeleteLove white collar too. Very good show with a strong cast. Season finale was such a game changer, I look forward to the season 4 premiere. 10th of july is coming sooo slowly ;-)
ReplyDeleteI have given the shows a chance. I've watched some shows. Never got into any.
ReplyDeleteI got the complete opposite. Didn't like HOTH that much, Survival of the Fittest was an OK episode to me. I did certainly not like IATL. To me it was such a silly and trivial episode and the storyline seemed so far fetched. (Then again, I didn't like most of season 4's episodes. I can't get why so much people liked season 4 so much. Maybe 'cause I hated the Angels/Apocalypse storyline (the little show was good as it was, it got too big at that point imo) and the depressing feeling of it), really liked the fresh feeling of MTNB. Where so many fans were disappointed by the new role of Cas, it didn't really bother me, since I don't really care about Cas. Didn't like CYHIYB (I didn't quite like the what they called humour and rude behaviour of soulless Sam), and I did like the interaction between Sam and Lucifer, so Repo Man was an easy choise. Wow, hearing myself, I realise why Supernatural fans seem so whiny sometimes. I do like the show as a whole a lot.
ReplyDeleteI just finished Dark Angel..again and Jensen could have used that show as a demo tape for SPN. The last ep had Rick Worthy(Alpha Vamp) in it.
ReplyDeletevoted for :
ReplyDeletesurvival of the fittest
dream a little dream of me
meet the new boss
clap your hands if you believe
survival of the fittest and meet the new boss are obvious choices.
clap your hands if you believe: Souless-Sam was funny as hell in this episode. Dean: "empathy Sam, empathy" Sam: "you better run I think the fourth kind is a butt thing" Dean: "nipples?"
XD
dream a little dream of me: Great episode with Bela and Bobby as guest-star. I voted for it because it's a pivotal moment in season three. So far, Dean has been stoic, avoiding Sam questions and seemed to accept he was going to hell, but in DALDOM he finally acknowledge his fear of hell and his desire to live.
Just watch: (again great acting from Jensen in that scene)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F12C73a6BdE
:) You're reading my mind, except for the last one. I picked Repo Man too, but not because I hated Clap your Hands if You believe, but because I FREAK**** LOVE the Devil :D
ReplyDelete
