Things are really heating up in our quest to crown one episode the best of Supernatural Season 7. I don't think we've ever had a vote as close as The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo vs The Born-Again Identity. 5 or fewer votes separated it every time I checked the poll. Generally I call the poll an hour early in order to make the new one but this one I couldn't. In the end, The Born-Again Identity won in the last hour with 12 votes. It joins, Survival of the Fittest, Meet the New Boss, and Death's Door in our final four. This round will take us to the finals so vote your choice and don't forget to comment and to add your nominations for the best quotes from Route 666 and Nightmare.

Route 666 Quotes - The plot and guest acting may suck but it had a few good quotes:
ReplyDeleteHonorable Mention - Dean: "Would you stop? Blink or something."
Dean: "I'm in the middle of nowhere with a killer truck on my a**."
Sam: "Huh, honestly that thought hadn't occurred to me." Dean: "Well it honestly didn't occur to me…I'm going to kill him."
5. Sam: "So burning the body had no affect on that thing?" Dean: "Sure it did. Now it's really p**."
4. Sam: "Oh my life was so simple. Just school, exams, papers on polycentric cultural norms." Dean: "So I guess I saved you from a boring existence." Sam: "Yeah, occasionally I miss boring." Dean: "Alright, so this killer truck…" Sam: "I miss conversations that didn't start with this killer truck."
3. Sam: "Alright you work that angle. Go talk to her." Dean: "Yeah I will." Sam: "Oh and you might also want to mention that other thing." Dean: "What other thing?" Sam: "The serious unfinished business."
2. Dean: "Am I speaking a language you're not getting here?"
1. Sam: "It's just an interesting observation in a, you know, observationally interesting way."
Nightmare Quotes - It might have been a vastly superior episode to Route 666 but it was severely lacking in snark and quotables.
Honorable Mention - Sam (in priest outfit): "This has got to be a whole new low for us."
Dean: "Now then. I know what we need to do about your premonitions. I know where we have
to go." Sam: "Where?" Dean: "Vegas. What? Come on man. Craps table? We'd clean up."
5. Sam: "Dean, I've been thinking." Dean: "Well that's never a good thing."
4. Sam: "Why the hell is this happening to me?" Dean: "I don't know Sam but we'll figure it out, ok. We face the unexplainable every single day. This is just another thing." Sam: "No, it's never been us. It's never been in the family like this. Tell the truth, you can't tell me this doesn't freak you out." Dean: "This doesn't freak me out."
3. Max: "All these people kept coming with like casseroles. I finally had to tell them all to go away. You know cuz nothing says 'I'm sorry' like a tuna casserole."
2. Sam: "Well I know one thing I have in common with these people." Dean: "What's that?" Sam:
"Both of our families are cursed." Dean: "Our family's not cursed. We just had our dark spots." Sam: "Our dark spots are pretty dark." Dean: "You're dark."
1. Dean: "Because you've got one advantage that Max didn't have." Sam: "Dad? Because Dad's not here Dean." Dean: "No, me. As long as I'm around, nothing bad is going to happen to you."
I have a feeling the final poll will be a showdown of the premiere vs. the finale
ReplyDeleteI'm good with that. 2 excellent episodes. As long as Born-Again Identity isn't in the finals, I'm actually good with any of the remaining three winning.
ReplyDeleteSurvival of the Fittest - Because I have to choose something...And because of the simply brilliant ending!
ReplyDeleteMeet the New Boss - Best two episodes of the season,in my opinion.I went with Meet the New Boss only because it followed more storylines at once and it did it very well. Also,it had been a while since I loved a season premiere so much.
Quotes
Route 666
- Dean: "So,this killer truck..."
Sam: "I miss conversations that didn't start with 'this killer truck'."
- Sam: "Where are you?"
Dean: "In the middle of nowhere with a killer truck on my ass."
Wow,more than 6 years later and I still find the words 'killer truck' completely ridiculous! It'll never go away!
Nightmare
- Dean: "You have something Max didn't have."
Sam: "Dad?Cause Dad's not here,Dean."
Dean: "No,me.As long as I'm around nothing bad is gonna happen to you."
(Normally I go for the snarky comments, but I just had to put this one.)
- Max: "All these people kept coming with, like casseroles.I finally had to tell them all to go away.Because nothing says 'sorry' like a tuna casserole."
I agree, show gotta have some character development. But, that shouldn't be the main aspect of the show even after 7 years.
ReplyDeleteThe lead-in for Supernatural next season is Arrow, which is a male-skewing show. Unless, this show becomes more male-friendly unlike seventh season, I don't think, it has chance for the new viewers to have a look at this show. That's one more reason, I want more action and gore on the show.
That is why I love Supernatural. It always used to remind me, how me and my little bro communicate. Eric Kripke is the guy, who can write proper human emotions. I really respect him with all my heart.
ReplyDeleteGod, I've just gotta watch Survival of the Fittest already! :P
ReplyDeleteOh man, Rufus was such a favorite of mine (I think it's cause I love Steven Williams!). I was GUTTED with what happened to him in Then There Were None; which based on the episode title I wasn't so surprised but still. I agree, seeing him and Bobby together in Death's Door was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteRoute 666 could have been good. The ideas were there - but the execution was not. Also, those two quotes are decent, I do like that second one. But I always love Dean when he's being confronted by something emotional and is trying to keep his walls up. He's really a very sensitive character. I'd like to see some of that vulnerability come back actually. But I digress (as I'm want to do, all the time, ha).
Yes! I really, really felt this episode was more fan service than anything else as well, which is too bad because I think it would have had more punch if we'd had one whole episode of Sam in the institution and Dean struggling to help him before the "magic bullet" of Cas was brought back. Really the writers wrote themselves into a corner and the only way to "fix" Sam was with Castiel. Still doesn't make the episode any more fun to watch.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Castiel in season 5 - but after that. *sigh* I am really, really, worried about how much he'll be around in Season 8 (please give me Dean struggling ALONE in Purgatory! Please!). And God help me if he's the one to get Dean out of Purgatory. I swear I will not be responsible for my actions.
I always feel a moment of panic when I voice my dislike of Castiel's character and his presence on the show NOW. There seems to be so little dissent against him. I did like his use early on, so it's not a blanket dislike but man I would have rather seen Bobby remain and Cas go (even if it meant we didn't get the brilliant Death's Door). I guess we can't always get what we want, though!
Couldn't agree with your angel storyline thoughts more; as I said above, I would rather have Bobby back and Cas gone. I really hope Castiel isn't around for all of Season 8. PLEASE.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, you will see Bobby in season 8 in purgatory. Remember the last words of Bobby before the flask being burned up.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Dean should be alone. He should meet a lot of new and old characters in purgatory - like dead angels or the vampires etc.
But, this is one thing I am worrying about - Season 6 was left with a lot of scope and lot of options. But the writers have taken the worst possible path. Season 7 ended on a better note - I hope writers will not make mistakes as season 7.
Voted for the born-again identity and meet the new boss, but I'm good with any of them winning, I loved those four episodes.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite episode for season seven was ben Edlund ep. "reading is fundamental" which was perfect IMO.
My second favorite is the born-again identity:
This episode was awesome. Excellent writing, directing and actors performance.
Cas is alive and happy, but Dean find him, so we know that it won't last. It's the curse of the Winchester: no family, no happiness for them or for Cas.
His amnesic state allowed Dean to speak his mind openly (which is rare enough)
Even without his memory, I loved that Cas trust Dean enough to go and confront three demons without remembering how to fight them.
The fight and the flashback montage was breathtaking. When Cas remember, we see how horrified and ashamed he feels about what he did.
Loved that Cas was truly sorry for Sam. Cas taking Sam craziness was totally unexpected and awesomely done. He tried to wright his wrong and chose to sacrifice himself to restore Sam sanity. I tried very hard to understand why some Sam fans resented that Cas was Sam healer, but I just don't get it. For me, It make perfect sense that healing Sam is a necessary step in the path of redemption.
Sam storyline was equally captivating ... if you like some hurt-angst on screen, which I do :-) Lucifer has upped the game and is really trying to kill Sam now.
We see Sam without hope, dishevelled, deprived of food and sleep, unable to even think alone; and still, he manages to help somebody else in a true winchester way.
My only complain is that I wanted Sam in a straight-jacket calling for help while locked in a padded-cell (that was perfectly scripted in my brain) ;)
Dean hasn't is own storyline, but we watch Sam and Cas journey through his eyes. We feel Dean pain, anger and determination to not let his brother die. Jensen performance is stunning.
An almost perfect episode for me.
I'm mourning Hello, Cruel World too. Such brilliance.
ReplyDeleteCas didn't get a pass by not remembering.
ReplyDeleteHis happy amnesic life was out the minute Dean found him.
As you say yourself, Dean had obvious conflicted feelings and the mission at hand was saving Sam. And Cas remembered soon enough. You could see he is ashamed and shocked when his past come back to him. We know what happens to Cas after he takes Sam "illness". Cas is broken. I don't see how that is a "free pass"
Cas don't get amnesty.
The whole "bees and pacifism" is his way of dealing with everything. It's not enjoyable, it's not a happy ending.
It's a mighty warrior who has lost faith, confidence and purpose and need to find his way back to his true self.
Cas will be forgiven not because of a "free pass" or a "amnesty", He will be forgiven because he is family. That's motto of the show as sure as "saving people and hunting things" is too.
about Dean being "out of character":
Dean can talk with him because Cas is amnesic. Dean knows he will not have an emotional response to avoid from Cas, so he speaks about what eats him from the moment Cas chose the wrong path. I didn't find it out of character, especially if you remember that Cas is "like a brother" to him. They know each other since season four. They have fought together, feared together and laughed together.
I will point one "out of character" moment: Cas breaking Sam wall.
Since he broke ranks from heaven, everything Cas did was to protect the bros, everything. The episode before the season six finale, he was still crushing Crowley into a wall and warning him to not touch the boys and then he does it himself!? He could have put the boys to sleep with his angelic fingers or zapped them somewhere easily. That was totally out of character. To quote you: "what the hell writers!"
You said "Dean is again the spectator in his own story":
Dean is a "spectator" in this episode because this episode deal mainly with Sam and Cas storyline. Whether some fans like it or not, Cas is part of the show and has his own storyline. Maybe that's why you didn't like this episode. To appreciate all of it, I think you have to be at least interested enough in Cas to see things from his POV.
And why "again"? Dean is rarely a spectator in his own show. Some Sam fans even complain that it's always Dean and never Sam, so what is it really?
Also: I know you are not a fan of Cas, and that's okay. Spn love comes in many flavors.
But It really sadden me that you hate him now.
As if there wasn't enough people on that sad hating boat already :-/
route 666:
ReplyDeleteDean: 'Well it honeslty didn't occur to me.' I'm gonna kill him
Sam: You mean you dated someone? For more than one night?
Dean: Am I speaking in a language you're not getting here?
nightmare:
Dean: As long as I'm around, nothing bad is gonna happen to you
Dean: I know what we need to do about your premonitions. I know where we have to go.
Sam: Where?
Dean: Vegas
AMEN.
ReplyDeleteI truly believe Frank is alive and holed up in a RV somewhere living his paranoid life. I would be fine if he comes back too. In the end though, I hope they bring new characters in and develop them slowly.
ReplyDeleteAPPLAUSE
ReplyDelete"Dean felt betrayed, but so did Cas."
Exactly!
Cas: "I thought that you said we were like family. Well, I think that too. Shouldn't trust run both way ?"
I think we will have to agree to disagree about Cas and free passes. In fact, we'll probably do the same for all things Cas. However, I think that the writers themselves have shown that this story is told through the Winchesters' eyes. With the exception of maybe 3 or 4 episodes out of 149, that is the way it goes and quite frankly I don't think the show would survive if it ever changed that. We do agree on one thing though - I am hoping for an unexpected twist and since SPN is very good at that, I think we'll get it. Let's just hope it's an unexpected twist that both of us are excited about.
ReplyDeleteRight! lets focus on the goods things and hope for the best instead of anticipating the worst. :-)
ReplyDeleteI didn't expected for one uf us to really change his POV on that character. I just felt the need to defend my fave as any good fangirl would do :-D
I'm not sure I explained myself clearly. When I watch spn or any other show that interest me enough, I put myself in the character shoes, that's what I was saying by "through his eyes". I try to imagine what he thinks, what he feels, why he act that way etc.
I don't care how the writers want us to see it. I have empathy for characters, mostly for Sam, Cas or Dean, but not only them. that's how I roll ;-)
For me it was the X-files. Mister X was a fierce badass bastard. Loved him :-)
ReplyDeleteBack in the days, I was addicted to the X-files far more than I am now with SPN. I guess I was a "rabbid fangirl" then XD
nb: not sure about the policy for swearing here O.o
Survival of the Fittest, Death's Door.
ReplyDeleteQuotes:
Route 666:
Dean: "Maybe? Maybe! What if you were wrong" Sam: "Huh. Honestly, that thought hadn't occurred to me." Dean: "Well it honestly didn't occur to me… I'm going to kill him."
Dean: "Would you stop? Blink or something."
Nightmare:
Dean: "Because you've got one advantage that Max didn't have." Sam: "Dad? Because Dad's not here Dean." Dean: "No, me. As long as I'm around, nothing bad is going to happen to you."
Sam (in priest outfit): "This has got to be a whole new low for us."
I voted Survival of the Fittest, and Death's Door. I chose Survival over Born-Again for reasons you can read in my reply to Dahne's comment; and I chose Death's Door over Meet the New Boss because while I think MtNB is a very strong episode and a great premiere (Dean fixing the Impala is always something I love to watch), Death's Door had far more scope, and depth, and just flawless acting by everyone. Plus, even though it marked Bobby's death (BOO 4EVER), Jim Beaver was so, so SO DAMN GOOD.
ReplyDeleteI literally, moments ago, just finished watching Route 666. Ugh. It's a pretty terrible episode, which is unfortunate, because it is surrounded by awesome ones on either side! It had potential, too. But I think the guest roles were badly miscast (*cough*Cassie*cough*). Anyway, I was unimpressed with any quotes so...maybe I'll find some in Nightmare to nominate.
You know, I would agree with you about Cas and Bobby if there were any other older, familiar characters still alive (aside from Sheriff Mills whom I LOVE!) to help bring in and get us used to some new blood. That being said, I'd love to see some recurring faces but sadly the ones I want to see aren't possible (except for Sheriff Mills, I do hope she makes a reappearance). I agree with you about Becky, but I enjoyed Missouri (and I know you hate it, but Home is one of my fav's from season 1). I do not think, however, that we will ever see Missouri again not only because the actress is likely unavailable, but I think the time (related to the show) for her to be used in a relevant way is long passed. Actually, I'd really love to see Frank come back! I'm hoping he's faked his death and will be used again in season 8. I enjoyed his snarky-relationship with Dean, and I think it'd be amusing to see him and Sam work together, sans Dean, for an episode or two.
ReplyDeleteThank you for answering my question Dahne, and honestly, I prefer more detailed explanations over two sentence declarations about opinions such as this, if that makes sense.
ReplyDeleteI feel like what I'm about to say is a major "unpopular opinion", but I am done with Castiel (and have been for awhile - mid-season 6, really). I love Misha, and he's served the show well, but the character of Castiel has outlived his usefulness and the more I'm forced to see him onscreen, the more irritated and angry I get at his presence. So I can completely see where all your thoughts are coming from regarding BIA and Castiel. I have to disagree about Lucifer and Sam's hunt - those were the most enjoyable parts of the episode for me (and though I never questioned the validity of the threat of Sam dying from lack of sleep, I definitely see your perspective).
I felt actual anger towards the show, on Dean's behalf, when he was forced to "kid glove" handle Cas when he was amnesiac, and the more I think about it the worse that whole scenario is. I can't agree with you more in that respect. I also agree with you about the "healing" of Sam. I feel like this episode would have worked better as a two-parter and given room to breath...though it also might have turned into a bigger mess.
Also? Meg was definitely one of the better parts of the episode.
I usually love Sera's episodes (funny, and fitting that all four of the episodes in this poll are her's), but this one was so middling for me. Not on my worst list, but definitely not anywhere near the best.
