Thanks to Bruce_F for the heads up.
The good news about the return of "Community" got sullied pretty quickly. For those already up in arms about "Community's" move from Thursdays to Fridays, you might be keeping those arms up. There's been speculation that its creator, Harmon, would step down as showrunner for the NBC comedy. And NBC President Robert Greenblatt did little to deny that was a real possibility.
"Those conversations are happening as we speak," Greenblatt said during a conference call Sunday with reporters. "I guess what I would say is ... I expect Dan's voice to be part of the show somehow. I'm just not sure exactly if that means him running it day to day or consulting on it."

I hope he returns. I'd rather Chevy not return than Dan not return.
ReplyDeleteThe Community fan base is very vocal about, well, everything. I'd think twice before pulling the trigger on this if I were an executive at NBC.
ReplyDeleteWell with its dwindling ratings which means the network isn't making much from it, I'm not sure that the fans are its top priority
DeleteWHAT?!.....*shaking my head*
ReplyDeleteThat's just the most idiotic decision that could possibly play out. Disappointed.
Messing with any aspect of Community isn't likely a good thing. Since Community was moved to Fridays, I'm thinking either NBC is trying to let the show die off next season, and/or NBC is really that clueless about scheduling. I'd be worried about the show changing in quality in some way if Harmon was not show runner anymore. However, the whole Harmon vs. Chevy Chase fiasco was handled extremely poorly. NBC execs might have to move Harmon out of that showrunner position, despite the show creatively doing well, just because Harmon is obviously not as professional as execs tend to like.
ReplyDelete"Creator Dan Harmon may not return as showrunner"
ReplyDeleteI may not return as viewer.
I don't know what to make of this. I can't and don't want to imagine Community without Dan. I can't see him willingly stepping down either, I was always under the impression that he loves this show and these characters and wouldn't want to leave them in anyone else's hands. This is HIS show and no one else could do it justice, if NBC forces Harmon out it would be a HUGE mistake.
ReplyDeleteErm that seems like a huge huge mistake. Dan is an idiot at times but creatively he is brilliant, without him I'm not sure the show could work.
ReplyDeletedan harmon only wrote like 3 episodes of community and not even the best ones...
ReplyDeleteWriter and showrunner aren't the same thing. Harmon is responsible for the day-to-day operation and the overall creative direction of the series.
ReplyDeleteHe will remain executive producer so I don't expect much to change plus since its a relatively young show, the next showrunner could be one of the other eps who's been around since episode 1 so I wouldn't worry so much. Worry that its on friday since it could face some other heavy fan base show
ReplyDeleteok. first of all, he has written 5 episodes. and second of all, all showrunners write just 2 or 3 episodes per season. especially for a network show. There is a lot of work that is done by a showrunner than just writing episodes. That is why there is a writing team. But the final product that you see is Harmon's vision, it's not of any of the writers, it's his. And while the show could continue to deliver laughs in his absence, the show won't be the same without him and if love the show as it is now, you can be rest assured it will not be like that if someone else takes over. You will have a similar show, but not this one.
ReplyDeleteif Dan Harmon doesn't return for season 4, neither will I. Season 3 finale would be the last episode of Community I will watch.
ReplyDeleteWow... it would be absolutely horrible for him not to return! He's given the show such a unique voice, and I can't imagine it without him.
ReplyDeleteExactly. Not to mention that not every joke in an episode is written by the writer credited for the episode. Often times small lines/ideas originate from another writer, meaning that, even when he isn't credited there are some jokes written by Dan that you're unaware of (unless later stated by the writers themselves). It may not always be obvious, but his presence is there in every episode. Like Bruce said, it's his creative direction that drives the show.
ReplyDeleteWHAT????? This has to be a unfunny joke, please.
ReplyDeleteIs this NBC doing? Because I can't imagine Dan stepping out of HIS show, not leaving to OTHER hands. In case that this is NBC's fault, it seems the channel is trying to kill Community with any weapon they have... I can't understan why, its the best show they have and other communitys aren't doing great in ratings either.
Oh, God, I tired of bad community news. :(
That's my thought exactly. I have a feeling that's what this is all about, that NBC would rather have Chevy's name attached to the show than Dan's, which is too bad.
ReplyDeleteThe last few months haven't been that great for us Human Beings.
ReplyDeleteThe hiatus, then the long wait to hear about a renewal, then the renewal happening but just for 13 episodes. Last but not least the move to Fridays night. And now this. Which could probably be the worst thing happening to Community.
I surely don't think it's Dan idea, he loves the show too much and always speaks of it as his baby (which IT IS). This will probably blow off in some days but the mere fact that we're talking about it, worries me a lot.
I was rooting for a season 4 which came but now this?! I hope that Harmon will remain on the show to some extent or the brilliance that is Community is gone...Another showrunner will have another vision and it might not be the greatest thing for the show.
ReplyDeleteThis happening would definitely be he worst timeline, so I hope that it doesn't happen.
ReplyDeleteWhat you would have we don't know, because we don't have it yet. Also, Community in seasons 2 and 3 is very different than Community in season 1 (and for the worse, even though eps are still good, sometimes really good)
ReplyDelete"For the worse" is just your opinion. The show certainly is different, personally I like this, it evolves. I'm not a huge fan of static shows that reset after every episode. And style-wise, I believe the show has gone in the direction Dan has always intended. This seems clear to me in listening to the commentaries, he's always wanted to do "outside-the-box" stuff (like fake clip episodes), and this is reason enough for me to see this show would never be the same without him. Of course season 1 is a bit more "normal", if he had pitched the show as it is now in s3, it never would have gotten picked up, it would have been "too weird" for any network to even consider. The reason it works right now is because we have that foundation of the first two seasons to support it, we know the characters well enough that we can easily follow them into some really bizarre situations. Anyway, you're right, we don't know what it would be like without Dan, but I'd prefer to never find out. IMO, the heart of the show would be missing without Dan's unique vision driving it.
ReplyDeleteWhy is everyone saying they won't watch if Dan Harmon doesn't come back?? How do you have any idea at all what kind of input he has on the show? There are still other writers and the jokes are still going to be just as fun. It's the cast that makes the show fun to watch, not the creator of the show. I'm a fan of the show and I will keep watching it no matter what, sure some ideas might be lost if Harmon is gone but the core of the show will hopefully always remain the same.
ReplyDeleteIs Dan just tired of the fight? It's his baby, but the last year must have been hard on him. And to put in so much fight, just to then be giving 13 episodes after Whitney on a Friday...everyone is annoyed about this, so imagine what Dan is like.
ReplyDeleteI hope he sticks around as showrunner. I wouldn't want to say that someone else could take the reigns of this show and keep it running well, cause we've had such amazing and different episodes the last three years that someone might not find the right balance that Dan finds each season.
Oh great, I've missed so much today. A move to fridays and now this. O_O
ReplyDeleteUgh I've never seen fans get screwed over as much as Community fans do. And I'm a long time Joss Whedon fan. Don't fix what 'aint broke!
ReplyDeletewell said.
ReplyDeleteandy s that is my answer as well.
I would also like to add that I never said I know what the show will be without Dan, I said that I know that it wouldn't be the show that we are seeing now. This is Dan's show and through the 3 years he has steered the, as celerys said, a "normal" show and brought to a place where he can completely bring his vision to the show. At season 1 the network will have a lot of say about how a show is made which is why it was different then.
Kill Pierce.
ReplyDeleteYep, keep Harmon and ditch Chevy.
ReplyDeleteThis show works because of all its components but DH is the hear tof it all.
ReplyDeleteIt's too much of a stylised and unique show and Dan's voice is very distinct. You mess with any of it you ruin the show. If this indeed goes down then I'm pretty sure the show would not be the same.
Just ask Abed....
What.
