CBS pilot verdicts are in: Four dramas, two comedies — including a Sherlock Holmes detective series and sitcom about working at GroupOn.
The network has given a half dozen projects series orders for next season, starting with Elementary, a modern-day New York City-based drama series that’s sounded like a no-brainer for the network’s brand since it was first developed. Jonny Lee Miller plays Sherlock, Lucy Liu is Watson. Aidan Quinn co-stars.
The network’s most intriguing-sounding new drama is Vegas, a period piece set in the 1960s centered around the true story of Ralph Lamb: rodeo cowboy turned longtime sheriff of Las Vegas. On paper, this one seemed like a long shot given the way fellow recent ’60s-set dramas Pan Am and Playboy Club fared in the ratings. But if you’re going to dip into the past on CBS, you can’t get much safer than doing a Vegas-set crime drama — you could almost call it a CSI prequel. Plus the cast is great: Dennis Quaid is the sheriff, Michael Chiklis is a mob fixer, plus there’s Jason O’Mara and Carrie-Ann Moss.
Next up is Made in New Jersey (formerly Baby Big Shot) and Golden Boy. The former is about a working-class woman (Janet Montgomery) who uses her street smarts to compete with her more polished colleagues at a Manhattan law firm. Kyle MacLachlan, Pablo Schreiber co-star. Golden Boy tracks one cop’s (Theo James) meteoric rise from officer to detective to police commissioner. Co stars Chi McBride, Kevin Alejandro, Bonnie Somerville.

On the comedy side, the network that brought us Twitter-based $#*! My Dad Says and Twitter-based actor Ashton Kutcher is once again showing its affinity for new media. The network has greenlit Friend Me. Here’s the rather extensive logline: “Twentysomething best friends, Evan and Rob, move from their hometown of Bloomington, Ind., to Los Angeles to begin their exciting new lives working at GroupOn. Evan is having trouble breaking his old slothful habits and rather than go out after work to explore L.A. and meet new people, prefers to play online poker with his buddies back home. Rob has different plans and is determined to drag Evan, kicking and screaming, along with him.” Cast: Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Nicholas Braun.
CBS also ordered Partners, described as “a personal story of two lifelong friends and business partners. Architects Charlie and Louis’ friendship has lasted longer than either of their romantic relationships and almost seems like a weird marriage. When Charlie decides to propose to his girlfriend, Louis’ neurotic attempts to be supportive nearly result in the breakup of his own relationship.” Cast: David Krumholtz, Michael Urie, Sophia Bush, Brandon Routh.

I'm thrilled about Partners!
ReplyDeleteSophia Bush is back ^^
ReplyDeleteI'm kinda excited for Partners and Elementary. I really like the actors involved on both and the premises are interesting to me. The others i'll check out and see how they look.
ReplyDeleteNow these seems interesting, must of been the wording before. Definitely checking out most of these,Vegas, Golden Boy, and Partners..umm interesting...can't wait for promos!
ReplyDeleteElementary and Partners sound best for me.
ReplyDeleteI only hope that lack of Holmes&Watson bromance (looks like it's more like romance here) won't ruin the show's chances to be great. I mean, I love Sherlock Holmes (movies, show, books) but John&Sherlock's bromance is definitely one of my favorite parts of the story, so we'll see.
Well, if you read the Conan Doyle stories, there was no bromance. Far from it. Sherlock basically spent the entire series subjugating and demeaning Watson, while Watson was a pretty shallow sycophant who's only purpose was to narrate and remark about how great Sherlock is.
ReplyDeleteElementary is an absolute non-starter for me I will not be checking out despite loving Crime Drama as a genre.
ReplyDeleteVegas (formerly Ralph Lamb) sounds like the best of the bunch BY FAR and probably next year's #1 new drama for CBS to continue their streak of having the best new drama every year.
None for the rest interests me, but I will likely check out the sitcoms once they air. I had very little interest in 2 Broke Girls before watching and now it is a weekly watch I look forward to!
Janet Montgomery back on tv! She has a smile that makes me melt. She really does.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I know it's a bit different in the books. Was actually refering to BBC' Sherlock and last 2 movies, which I find really great and think they're very fresh&well-done versions of the story. And I just love this bromance there:)
ReplyDeletePartners and Elementary are the only shows I'll check out
ReplyDeleteI will be checking out VEGAS.
ReplyDeleteI'd give ELEMENTARY a try but the whole Sherlock Holmes NOT being in the UK thing just won't cut it for me.
Vegas looks very interesting. And you can't go wrong with actors such as Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis being involved :)
ReplyDeleteI know, even though I love Lucy Lui, you just can't go messing around with Sherlock Holmes like that. But I am so over crime dramas and procedurals, heck my bookshelf is stuffed to the gills with the stuff. Even though I really love Las Vegas and it's colorful past that seems stranger than fiction at times, I'm passing on Vegas. The comedies on CBS minus HIMYM and 2 Broke Girls just don't do it for me, never really have. I am even done with CSI and Criminal Minds. I am on the fence about The Mentalist, especially with its move. The only definite CBS outing that I am going to be watching come hell or high water is PoI.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they were thinking about the latest rash of movies (which as much as I love Robert Downy, Jr.) I didn't care for.
ReplyDeleteIt's Vegas for me.
