SouthLAnd - The renewal for season 5 is really, reeeeeally close

9 Apr 2012

TNT would not comment but negotiations are nearing an end and a deal is expected to close this week.

Sticking point seems to be on how many episodes will be ordered : Warner Bros. and executive producers John Wells, Christopher Chulack and Jonathan Lisco are looking for 13 episodes while the network has offered 10, as the show has done for its past two seasons.

Season 4 closed out on Tuesday, March 20 with a ratings uptick from the previous year, with 2.9 million viewers tuning in each week. In the 18-49 demo, SouthLAnd averaged 1.3 million viewers and 1.4 million in 25-54. Both those numbers were slight increases from a year ago though total viewers were off 2% from 2011. Also, the medium age for the SouthLAnd audience fell to 48, 2 years younger than the audience for last season.

Thanks to Variety for this great information !

  1. So the "big" question is the episode order? I don't even watch this show, but that's a ridiculous reason to hold on waiting to officially announce a new season pick-up. Rather announce the renewal, and then later, once the date of the premiere is set, announce the episode order. Thats just my opinion, though.

  2. I would prefer more than 10 episodes it just doesn't seem enough but really I'm just happy the show is getting a 5th season after all the trouble its had with cancellation in the past.

  3. I would like only a ten episode season myself. The show needs to limit itself. That`s also why season 4 was the best season of the show. It trimmed so much of the fat, with taking out or removing characters that never was shown to deliver at full payoff with their arcs. The show should limit itself to 3 set of partners, and a bunch of recurring characters (like Dewey, Carl Lumbly`s character and so on).

  5. Not really, they were really dumb to cancel it in the 1st place, besides, it's a better fit on TNT.  On NBC it probably wouldn't do as well since the network isn't doing too well.

  8. What's that supposed to mean? I don't see how that has any relevancy to this... and I never said CSI. Miami was the best show on Earth. Frankly, it's not. There are factors, like a lot of the camera use, that I really hate. I just think the show is awesome, but not the best on the planet. And again, what kind of relevancy does that have to this? Just like the loyal fans of Miami, I think the loyal fans of Southland deserve to get a renewal dished out first, and then smaller issues, like the episode order, dished out later. If CBS had announced Miami's pickup last month, I wouldn't care if it was 8 or 28 episodes. So please do comment with the reasons behind your argument, I'd love to understand what "im just sayin" meant in this context.

  11. I'd rather have just 10 episodes than none.
