-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC danced its way to another metered market Monday victory, with a hefty 96 percent advantage over second-place NBC. But The Voice is expected to lead the Peacock net to victory among adults 18-49. Third overall was Fox, followed by a night of all repeats on CBS and, of course, The CW.

Dancing With the Stars scored a very dominant 12.8 rating/19 share from 8-10 p.m., peaking in the 9 p.m. hour with a 13.3/20. One year earlier, it was stronger, however, at a 15.1/23 on 4/25/11. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

Dancing With the Stars (ABC)
8:00 p.m.: 11.8/18 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 12.7/19 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 13.3/20 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: 13.3/20 (#1)

My pick to bid adieu on Dancing With the Stars tonight: the wonderful Gladys Knight.

At 10 p.m., ABC crime solver Castle won the time period with an 8.2/13. But retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Dancing With the Stars could have been better than 62 percent.

On NBC, solid The Voice finished second in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. with a 6.2/10. One year earlier, a repeat of Chuck (1.9/ 3 on 4/25/11) and short-lived The Event (3.2/ 5) could only muster an average 2.5/ 4. The Voice will, of course, finish first for the evening among adults 18-49 with the half-hour overnight breakdown as follows:

The Voice (NBC)
8:00 p.m.: 6.1/10 (#2)
8:30 p.m.: 6.3/ 9 (#2)
9:00 p.m.: 6.5/10 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 6.2/ 9 (#2)

Modest Smash on NBC at 10 p.m., which was already picked-up for season two, finished third with a 4.4/ 7, which was five percent above failed year-ago occupant Law & Order: Los Angeles 4.2/ 7 on 4/25/11). While you have to give NBC credit for not pre-empting ambitious Smash for any repeats, there is no reason to unfortunately believe this will ever break out.

Over at Fox, veteran Bones finished third with a 5.2/ 8 in the overnights at 8 p.m., followed by soon-to-conclude House at a 4.3/ 6 at 9 p.m. House airs its final telecast on Monday, May 21 out of a one-hour retrospective special.

Elsewhere, the aforementioned night of all encores on CBS opened with How I Met Your Mother at a fourth-place 3.2/ 5 at 8 p.m., followed by 2 Broke Girls (#4: 3.7/ 6), Two and a Half Men (#3: 4.5/ 7), Mike & Molly (#4: 4.0/ 6) and Hawaii Five-O (#2: 5.0/ 8). Do you think 2 Broke Girls will move to Thursday next season? http://tinyurl.com/d9zf5r3

The CW capped off the evening with a mere 1.1/ 2 in the overnights each for Gossip Girl and Hart of Dixie. With The Secret Circle the highest rated of the freshman CW scripted drama trio, Hart of Dixie is unlikely to return next season.

  1. I wish Castle had been on last night!  But the 20/20 Dancing with the Stars eppy was interesting.

  2. Hart of Dixie has been pulled the same numbers as Secret Circle for two weeks despite having a lead-in that's twice as weak. The CW sure must have some things to think about.

  3. I think that HoD had better ratings last week than The Secret Circle. So I think canceling Secret Circle is a no brainer.

  4. How are they talking about Castle when it wasn't on last night?

  5. Just because The Secret Circle had one bad week and Hart of Dixie had one good week does not mean that things have changed that much. If anything CW needs to see how all three remaining episodes for both shows perform before they make a decision.

TSC has been the strongest of the three since January so by it having one bad week doesn't mean it's dead. Hart of Dixie saw a series low the week before last week when it returned as well. Wait and see if TSC will rebound this week(which I'm sure it will).

  6. In the case of HOD v TSC we may have to see how the remaining episodes of the season rate before we can determine which one has the better chance of survival. At the moment both are firmly on the bubble in my book. I had TSC as likely renewal as it was the highest rated of all the new shows this season however it has been on a downward slide for the past few episodes and if that trend continues I cant imagine the CW will be keen on renewing it. If it ends the season with lower ratings than HOD then I can see it getting the chop. Then again if HOD were to drop agian it would find itself more likely to be cancelled. It really is a rather precarious situation both are in. Maybe both will be cancelled if the CW opick up more new shows than expected or maybe both are renewed due to the lack of new shows the CW can pick up and/or to combat the gaps in the schedule. I dont doubt the CW would rather cancel both along with Ringer and Nikita but the chances of them being able to do that are quite slim.

Take all 4 out of the schedule and that would leave the CW with a 5 hours of air space to fill in the fall.

    Monday
    8-Gossip Girl
    9-New (Hart Of Dixie Cancelled)

    Tuesday
    8-90210
    9-New (Ringer Cancelled)

    Wednesday
    8-Americas Next Top Model
    9-New (One Tree Hill ended)

    Thursday
    8-The Vampire Diaries
    9-New (The Secret Circle cancelled)

    Friday
    8-New (Nikita cancelled)
    9-Supernatural

5 hours for the fall doesnt seem doable on the CW's budget and that doesnt include plugging the mid season gap between ANTM cycles.

I think 1 show will have to come back.

  7.  But Hart of Dixie pass after Gossip Girl and TSC after The Vampire Diaries. There is a big difference of expectations for HoD and TSC.

  8. When you consider the TSC & HOD overall, TSC I believe has been the most consistent. I hope that gets renewed over HoD.

  9. I agree with this, TSC has to be considered a massive flop even more so than HOD becuase the expectations for TSC were much higher than for HOD.

If Kevin Williamson's pilot is picked up to series by the CW I think he and the net would be willing to let TSC go.

Either way cancelled or not one thing we know for sure is that TSC will not be gracing the Thursday schedule next season and if it does get this seasons pity renewal than I would expect it to be cancelled at the end of its second season.

  10. Smash and House up vs. last original episode. Shame for Gossip Girl and HoD - 0.5 that's series low for both of them. Bones steady.

  11. House and Bones are performing mildly well. Especially when recalling the House+Alcatraz numbers. NBC's superhit The Voice isn't really a behemoth but it's a bright spot in a dark abyss, and even Smash's terribly low retention is still a plus for their 10pm slot. However, I personally think that after 2 hours of The Voice, a show like "Harry's Law" would fit better in that late slot. It has the older viewers, and it always seemed lead-in dependent for its 18-49 demo numbers.

  12. TSC is definitely NOT the most consistent of the two. It premiered at 1.2 and can barely pull a 0.6 this spring. The CW promoted it a lot and gave it the network's best timeslot. There is now way they are happy or satisfied with TSC anymore.

  14. I really wish that Hart of Dixie would get more views.
