It was okay, Serena is acting like a bitch, Lola tries to keep up with that, Chuck is wearing hideous tracksuits, Diana and Nate are a bore, Lily is behaving even worse than Serena and Dan&Blair are, as always, pure perfection.
Finding out Chuck paid off Blair's dowry was a serious "awwwww" moment for me. And the fact that he doesn't want her to know it was him is really a testament to how much he's changed. Too bad Nate had to blab to Dan about it. Maybe spending this time away from her will give Chuck a real opportunity to really flourish and help him to understand who he is as a person. Despite everyone else's refusal to see it, I love the person he's becoming.
I'm really frustrated by Serena now - one day she's trying to bring Lola into the family and show her how much they care about her, and the next she's manipulating her into being Gossip Girl's new target to get the site off HER back? Ugh. I'm frustrated with Lily, too. She's being utterly ridiculous - Rufus said it. The Van der Woodsens have enough money for GENERATIONS to be comfortable. Stop bitching. I'm glad Rufus is staying in Brooklyn for a while.
Yes. I honestly didn't know what the hell to make out of Chuck in that get up or, honestly, situation. I completely lost the thread of that scene because I was too busy trying to reconcile the idea of him returning from the gym with Nate with what I know of Chuck's lifestyle and persona. Like... okay, maybe he works out, but the Chuck Bass thing is that we don't ever have to know that.
Perhaps the stupid tracksuit was the show's way of hanging a lampshade on that absurdity? Like, "Haha! Chuck Bass went to the gym to work out - how silly is THAT notion?"
Hmm... I feel this episode warrants a more serious post than the snark I was ready to deliver before watching it.
Say what you will about Serena's choices of late, but I really appreciate the way this Gossip Girl thing is forcing her to actually step into some muddy waters where some not-so-shiny truths about herself lurk. She's always been self-absorbed in a plausible deniability sort of fashion where the ways in which she hurts people are collateral damage of her carelessness. She's been so passive through much of the series, often a victim herself of her own bullshit, so it's a been a long time coming to see her start to take some ownership of her Rhodes ways and ACTIVELY set things in motion for whatever selfish reason she has. This is the first time in years that Serena has actually been interesting to me. Can't wait to see where she lands...
And Nate! Maybe it's his lack of emphasis and consistent c-plot exile that's made the shift so gradual, but he's become quite righteous over time hasn't he? Carrying the main plot this episode really allowed us to see how cynical and serious our cute little Nate has become. And now that he's dating the new Vanessa, I don't see him returning to form any time soon. Loved the way Dair has brought him back into Dan's sphere, though.
Actually, on that topic, I really wish we could have more plots that are friendship driven than work/family/couple focused. Why can't there be an episode where Dan and Nate have a whole storyline together? Or any combination we don't typically see (Chuck and Rufus? Hahaha!). Or, actually, a whole episode where all the kids spend the whole thing as a unit. I need more than the occasional 30 second reminder that these people are friends who care about one another.
But, if we must address the couples... I liked what Blair said to Chuck. Not because he necessarily deserved it, but because I think she needed to say it to him. They'll probably come around to each other again, but Blair has never been able to fully stand up for herself when it comes to Chuck and it's not because of Chuck, it's because of her and her own issues with boundaries and loyalty. I like to see Blair engaging with reality in a firm manner and stretching herself beyond the patterns she's forever falling into. Shippers will ship, but it's pretty clear to me that Blair's better off where she's at right now.
Which brings me to Dair. I expected a lot of silly antics with these navel-gazers hooking up, and we got that, but they also kind of manage to be as real as it gets within a heightened reality. You get the sense that they actually like each other. And somehow they manage to cancel out the other's more extreme personality traits - maybe because they're talkers who talk. To each other. You can tell there are writers on staff who really like this couple. Good for them.
Lily isn't being greedy, that was her mother's money. I'm pretty sure if you were in her position you wouldn't wanna give your mother's money to a stranger who pretended to be your niece or whatever. Blair and Dan are so cute, it's adorable. Although I did like Blair and Louis alot until Louis became as asshole, and the fact the Blair's a princess.
I actually thought they were going to go there about Blair losing her baby but nope, she's sad she didn't ACTUALLY get to act in an official capacity as a princess, SMH
this is so true, put anyone else in Lily's position. If you found out a con artist came into your life and took your own mother's money what would you do? Just let her easily get away with it, if that's the case then obviously con artists have it way easy.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I just fucking can't with Serena and Lily anymore.
ReplyDeleteHope the episode was good. Can't wait to download later :-)

That tracksuit was hilarious hahaha.. and those gigantic shoes were stupid, too.

Pretty f'n silly, Gossip Girl.
Nate's not a very trustworthy friend to Chuck, he's always blabbing his secrets to other people.
ReplyDeleteThe Van Der Woodsens are becoming more and more annoying with each new episode.

ReplyDeleteDid you see the picture of NJBC on Nate's work desk? How cute. You can clearly see it the second time Diana barges into his office. It made me smile.
