The Office - NBC Considering a Reboot of the Series

Thanks to Nuno for the heads up.

NBC’s The Office went through a major transformation at the beginning of this season, following the departure of original star Steve Carell. But I hear the show, which has not been officially renewed, may undergo an even more dramatic change going into next fall.

Word is that The Office executive producer Greg Daniels, who originally developed the American version of the cult British comedy, is mulling a reboot of the series, now in its eighth season. Daniels is expected to meet with NBC brass to lay out his idea for The Office 2.0, which I hear would feature existing characters as well as new ones.

As for The Office key original cast members John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer and B.J. Novak, whose contracts are up at the end of this season, as well as that of Ed Helms, there hasn’t been a lot of movement in the negotiations over the past few weeks, following an early overture by the network around the time The Office spinoff starring Rainn Wilson came together.

  1. What in the actual fuck is going on here? Just let season nine be the final season because ten seasons would be stretching it. Hell, season nine is stretching it. Just end the show already!

  4. It's NBC's highest-rated show outside of The Voice... Of course they're going to kill it by making it last 15 seasons... :\

  5. it dies as hardly as Heroes did. But it will meet it's demise soon.

  6. yeah cause the Scrubs reboot went so well...

Let it go out with a bang, not a cancellation. This show is not ER or any show that can just keep changing its cast every couple of seasons. Imagine Friends replacing a few characters after a number of seasons, and rebooting the show...

    This just depresses me...

  7. I haven't watched this show in years now, but I'd still like some closure. Why can't nine seasons just be enough for them? This show is a mess.

  8. Yikes.. I don't like the sound of this.  I was hoping for a ninth and final season, but a reboot?  The show is on its last leg here... don't try to fix something that could go with being a bit broken for a final season.

Let's atleast hear what they're working on, we shouldn't shoot down the idea w/o giving it a thought. But agreed that end is inevitable, and they should work on a back-up plan to leave the fans with fondness for the show instead of killing it.

Why?! I know that NBC isn't doing so well but rebooting a show that has one foot out the door already?! Shouldn't a new show or newer shows be given the chance and money? I realize that people love the office but seriously...

  14. it would seem to me that if Jenna F and John K and Ed helms are not re-signed there is no point any more to even try for additional seasons.  No one can loose all the main players and make it survive.  The new lady is qwful and i hated the bosses after Michael  until Andy took over but even now with the creepy lady hanging around .. well ..meh.
