Hugo Awards - Community, Doctor Who and Game of Thrones nominated

7 Apr 2012

The Hugo Awards reward science-fiction and fantasy works and achievements in multiple categories on multiple mediums (TV, movies, novels, short stories, etc). The results will be announced from August 31 to September 3, 2012, at the Chicon 7 in Chicago (a 4-day ceremony ? I hope they'll pack their sleeping bags and toothbrushes [laugh track]).

Here are the categories that we, as television enthusiasts, care about :

Best Dramatic Presentation (Long Form) :

Captain America - The First Avenger, written by Christopher Markus and Stephan McFeely.
Game of Thrones season 1, written by David Benioff and DB Weiss.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part II, written by Steve Kloves.
Hugo, written by John Logan.
Source Code, written by Ben Ripley.

Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form) :

Community : Remedial Chaos Theory (episode 3.04), written by Dan Harmon and Chris McKenna.
Doctor Who : The Doctor’s Wife (episode 6.04), written by Neil Gaiman.
Doctor Who : A Good Man Goes to War (episode 6.07), written by Steven Moffat.
Doctor Who : The Girl Who Waited (episode 6.10), written by Tom MacRae.
— The Drink Tank's Hugo Acceptance Speech, written by Christopher J. Garcia & James Bacon.

George R.R. Martin's A Dance With Dragons is also nominated for best novel.

  1. Community at the Hugos, a sitcom in a sci-fi ceremony ? Hells yeah. As Evil Abed would say, "Hot. Hot hot hot." Inspector Spacetime and Constable must be proud.

A bit disappointed Fringe didn't get any noms. We can't expect FOX to lobby for the show for the Emmys or the Golden Globes (that privilege is reserved to ""worthy"" shows like Glee and New Girl), but I'd have expected a smaller ceremony, especially one focusing on sci-fi like the Hugos, to notice the show. So far, there's been so many great episodes this season (I haven't seen the last 3 eps, I suppose they're good, too). Season 4 was very slightly disappointing at first, but after 4-5 episodes this season showed all its potential and I love its bold central idea (that except Peter, we're following a different set of characters than those we've known for 3 years, I suppose that Peter will find its way home and reunite with them in the finale, and if I want a fifth season it's also for seeing the usual Olivia, Walter, Broyles and Astro again more than just a few minutes in episode 4.22, I suppose the writers won't drag that story longer than that, especially given the uncertain renewal).

I'm far from being a Walking Dead fan but I definitely wouldn't have been surprised if compelling episodes such as 2.07, 2.12 or 2.13 had gotten noms. Not surprised American Horror Story didn't get any, it's not a bad show but it's certainly shallow and a bit pretentious, and The Hugos not being a major televised award ceremony, FX didn't bother lobbying for its new hit show this time.

As for the film category (… and GoT, presenting itself as a season, not singling out any episode), it was kind of a no-brainer that Hugo would get noticed at the Hugos ^^. Happy that Source Code got a nomination, this film didn't make much noise but it's a riveting one, with a simple but interesting concept that all sci-fi fans have to love. Captain America and HP7 Part II being really good blockbusters, they deserve their nom, although it would have been perfectly justified if Rise of the Planet of the Apes or X-Men : First Class had gotten a spot among the best, too. Game of Thrones should win, though (imo, it's a toss up between that show and Harry Potter).

  2. 3 of the most amazing Doctor Who eps. I'm fully on board with these being nominated. My favourite is "The Doctor's Wife" :D

  3. I'm not familiar with the awards, but it's amazing that a sitcom like Community got a nomination in this ceremony!  It's great exposure, if nothing else, and it was a great episode, too!  It's nice to see them recognized.

  4. I'm one of the two guys who get to lose to either COmmunity (which would rule) or Dr. WHo (which would rule, but not quite so hard)

  5. Really great to see Community considered to be sci-fi! Also I love Doctor Who but 3 episodes seems extreme there are other shows that could have gotten a nod!
