Happy 25th birthday, FOX (poll 2/3 : comedy)

25 Apr 2012

This Sunday, FOX celebrates its 25th birthday. For this special occasion, I thought it would be interesting to see which FOX shows the SpoilerTV community enjoys the most.

After sci-fi and before drama, why don't we take some time to talk about comedies ?

Poll 1/3 : Science-fiction / fantasy.
Poll 2/3 : Comedy.
Poll 3/3 : Drama.

FOX isn't NBC, they don't have such a long history with comedies, but in 25 years, FOX has nonetheless built itself a reputation of breaking rules.

Irreverent and unapologetic, those were the key words in the early days at FOX, when they launched Married… with Children on their first day on April 5, 1987 (the reason why the pilot is rebroadcast today at 7pm) and then The Simpsons before Christmas 1989, two shows that became emblematic of the network since then. Those shows pushed boundaries compared to the goody-goody shows on the Big Three (ABC, CBS, NBC).

FOX tried to innovate with Married and The Simpsons in the late 80s, and they did the same thing in the late 90s by launching Action and Malcolm in the Middle during the 1999/2000 season, the first comedy series without a laugh track. HBO had tried that with Dream On (1990-1996) and The Larry Sanders Show (1992-1998) but I'm pretty sure Action and Malcolm were the first on network TV.

And today, when I look at the wonderful Raising Hope coming out of a brilliant second season, I feel that FOX's legacy is preserved.

Anyway, in the following poll, you can choose up to 5 FOX comedy series. Pick with caution :

UPDATE : I'm updating this thread and the one about dramas in order to get a few more votes before I compile the data and present it (probably in the thread on dramas) in a fun way at the end of the week. Compiling is basically looking at the polls and then writing down the results. Anyway if I could get a few more votes on those two threads, which currently have around 2,000 votes whereas the one on sci-fi / fantasy shows already has 5,248 votes (fell free to express your opinion on that one as well), that would be great. PS : I'm discovering the new version of Blogger now, and boy, does it suck.

  1. 1/ Arrested Development.
    2/ Raising Hope.
    3/ Futurama.
    4/ Action.
    5/ American Dad.

While I'm at it, from 6 to 10 : Sit Down Shut Up, Family Guy, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Malcolm in the Middle and finally Breaking In.

Arrested Development is not only my favorite FOX comedy but quite possibly my favorite comedy ever (it's most definitely in my top 5 alongside Curb your Enthusiasm, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Community and Seinfeld). I'm rewatching it for the third time nowadays, actually, and it's still hilarious, it just doesn't get old. It's so subtle and smart, full of hidden jokes and callbacks, all that delivered at a very fast pace by original characters portrayed by the most amazing cast… I love it.

Raising Hope is one of the very best sitcoms on the air. Ar the beginning of the season, I felt like 2 networks comedies stood out : Community and Parks & Recreation. Now, it's clear that it's Community, Parks & Recreation AND Raising Hope. Season 2 was utterly brilliant. The whole cast, especially Garret Dillahunt and Cloris Leachman, are perfect. And I absolutely loved the season finale (it seems that many people didn't), and I'm not a fan of the Seinfeld series finale — it's a comedy, it doesn't have to be realistic, and Raising Hope has always been quite zany (one of the reasons why I love it).

Futurama is my favorite animated series. Bender is my role model. The new episodes on Comedy Central as not as great as the ones on FOX (I'm not a fan of the 4 TV movies either), but it's still great (and some episodes are outstanding).

I'm sure no one knows Action or Sit Down Shut Up, two short-lived (13 episodes each) sitcoms, one live-action and the other animated, but I'm telling you : watch those shows. It's so smart and well-written. SDSU is created by a fellow named Mitch Hurwitz, with people like Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Henry Wrinkler voicing characters. Yes, it's like an Arrested Development animated reunion. It's not as crazy or as good as AD, but it's the same spirit, pace and style. I like it a lot.

Undeclared is on my to-watch list. And since people genuinely seem to enjoy New Girl, I might give this show a third try this summer.

  24. There were obviously a good many years when I wasn't watching FOX since I haven't heard of some of these.  My picks are Arrested Development, Raising Hope, Malcolm in the Middle, The Bernie Mac Show, and some seasons of The 70's Show.  I don't do animation so there was a lot less to choose from for me.

Honorable mention to Married With Children which held the network afloat in its early days.
Also a shout to some of my guilty pleasures like Parker Lewis Can't Lose and The Tick.
