Happy 25th anniversary, FOX (poll 3/3 : drama)

25 Apr 2012

The third and final poll is centered on FOX's dramatic series. Which ones were the more memorable to you and why ?

Poll 1/3 : Science-fiction / fantasy.
Poll 2/3 : Comedy.
Poll 3/3 : Drama.

I chose to put Glee in the drama category because when I was watching that show, I experienced many things but laughter wasn't one of them. Besides, by choosing to split sci-fi/fantasy and drama, a few spots were left open here and I didn't want to include just any drama series in the poll (I limited myself to 22 shows in each of the three categories).

In the following poll, you can choose up to 5 FOX drama series. Pick carefully... or not (after all, it's just a poll) :

I'll update this thread in a few days to say which were the... - I want to use "plebiscited shows", it feels right but it's apparently wrong... raah, dilemma ! Anyway, soon you'll see which were the most "acclaimed shows" in each category.

UPDATE : I'm updating this thread and the one about comedies in order to get a few more votes before I compile the data and present it (probably in this thread) in a fun way at the end of the week. If I could get a few more votes on those two threads, which currently have around 2,000 votes whereas the one on sci-fi / fantasy shows has 5,248 votes (fell free to express your opinion on that one as well), that would be sweet.

  1. 1/ 24.

    2/ The Chicago Code.

    3/ Profit.

    4/ Prison Break.

    5/ Human Target.

24 was the obvious #1 to me. The action, the suspense, the twists, the non-stop story, the cinematography, the score… everything is great in 24, each season was like a 17-hour thriller, with an intensity and production value that definitely made many films look bad). What a great concept, what a perfect way to use the format allowed by a TV series. And what a great lead actor to carry such a conflicted, tortured character : Kiefer Sutherland wasn't playing Jack Bauer, he was Jack Bauer. I discovered both Lost and 24 within a few days (June 25 and July 5, 2005, respectively) and they both got me hooked, invested and then led me to discover other TV shows by my own (not just randomly watching what was on TV), so I'm eternally thankful to them for their overall ambition and greatness.

The Chicago Code and Profit were two brilliant shows cancelled before their time, definitely worth watching though.

Seasons 3 and 4 Prison Break sucked big time, but season 1 was absolutely outstanding and season 2, while clearly inferior, was a perfectly decent entertainment, so the show deserves a spot in my top 5. The show's leads were not exactly charismatic but thankfully some supporting characters (William Fishner and Robert Knepper) did the job. Season 1 was tensed most of the time, season 2 had a lot of suspenseful moments, so even if everyone screwed up on the last two seasons, the early days of Prison Break should not go unnoticed.

I could (and probably should) have included House in the list only because of Hugh Laurie's stellar performance, but other than him I never thought the show in itself was truly outstanding or original. Plus, I've only seen like 7-8 episodes of seasons 5-8 and all the negative reviews the show has been getting these past few years never really made me want to watch it more assiduously again, so I wouldn't be judging the show in its entirety.

The OC is the only show on the list that I will watch in a near or distant future, but that I will definitely watch at some point.

  4. THE O.C. ONLY!!!!!! The O.C. was the reason I started watching Gossip Girl because of Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage. Although it could never compare. I MISS THE O.C. SO MUCH!!!! I'm hoping for a reunion or a 90210-esque spinoff one day.

  5.  You need to watch The O.C. sooner rather than later. Just a suggestion :)

  6. #1 24 - without a doubt #1, loved it and is in my top 5 favorite shows ever
#2 House - good and love House's snarky attitude

    Nothing else for me.

  7. Bones, Human Target, Lie to Me, New York Undercover, and Profit.

There are at least two shows that I would have picked if I were only judging their first season.  Prison Break and 24. Since all seasons are listed I felt like I had to judge overall.  While I watched 24 would do fabulous season premieres and 10 or 11 really good episodes and then just fall apart.  I finally stopped watching because they did something incredibly annoying, and to my taste, lazy.

  8. 1/ 24 (the only number one I could ever see)
2/ Bones (after seven seasons, the show still has the spark that made me love it in the first place)
3/ 21 Jump Street (horrendous clothing aside, I think this show was underrated. Johnny Depp really came into his own in this role)

  9. 1. Bones
    2. Ally McBeal
    3. House

  11. Tough choices considering I never watched these shows consistently.
Melrose Place - Finally a show that is not set in high school.Party of Five - No parents? Really? - Watched one season. They also had Gates McFadden.
Ally McBeal - Unisex washroom. Enough said.
    House - Hugh Laurie.
    The Finder - It's refreshing.

  18. 24 (Like Seasons 1 - 5), Prison Break (S1-S2), House (Seasons 1-5) their dramas always seem to lose the plot IMO

  23. - 24 without a doubt #1 for me, just an awesome concept and execution a the time it was on,
    - Ally McBeal (I loved the stream of consciousness writing especially early on, and great guest stars - Robert Downey Jr amongst others. It kinda went off the rails in the later seasons, which caused me to stop watching, but the early seasons were outstanding.
    - Human Target - particularly the first season, but very enjoyable for me
    - Bones - first 3 seasons mainly for me were the best. S4 started to get wobbly and after all the fake outs by HH, and then the increasing focus on the relationships vs the cases and the weak writing lost my interest. I finally cut it loose after the first ep of this season.
    - Honorable mention for The Chicago Code, S1 of Prison Break, and then the first half of S1 of Glee (everything after has been too inconsistent for me to give it a nod)
