According to Deadline NBC is looking to take advantage of the summer Olympics by premiering Grimm season 2 and new comedy Go On starring Mathew Perry in August. The Voice and Smash will also move to Fall and could start in early Fall.

  1. I'm confused. Grimm is on CBS?

  2. Grimm is on NBC. The Olympics are on NBC.

  3.  Yikes. Who would have thought DVRs would lead to no longer really noticing what network or channel you are watching. Sorry for the confusion.

  4. The CW tried the early premiere thing with their shows a few seasons back.  They launched new seasons of their dramas two weeks earlier than everyone else and it did not help those programs at all.

  5. Interesting plan.  I'm a huge fan of the Olympics so I'll probably watch Grimm afterwards.  Guess I will have to move season 1 higher up on my summer viewing list.

  6. Yuck.  I really hope they do not go this route.  Longer breaks during the season run is not usually helpful on the ratings front.  Unless they lengthened the season, it'd just mean either frequent small breaks or a longer mid-winter break.  Neither of which sounds fun!

  7. That's awesome season 2 will be on fast no long wait

  8. Not at all concerned with Grimm but I am excited to know that Smash and The Voice might start out early. Since Smash premiered midseason ratings were low since that's when most viewers tune out and try not to invest in a new show, and with it premiering early fall I want to know if the ratings might go up, hopefully.

  9. I think that NBC will have a much better shot than the CW at premiering their shows early for two reasons.

One, they have the advantage of advertising their shows during the Olympics (which has a huge audience) and can then premiere the shows before they have competition so people can decide whether they want to tune in for the rest of the season or not.

And two, the CW is sort of special case when it comes to a major network. I watch a lot of shows on the CW, but when I've tried to get other people to watch shows on it I've almost always gotten the reaction of, "Huh? What's the CW?" They have much much smaller ratings and a smaller demographic that they generally try to reach. I think that because of this any other major network would have a better chance of succeeding than the CW did when they tried premiering their shows early.

  10. The Olympics aren't nearly the draw they used to be and the added viewers only help if the people watching the Olympics are likely to also have an interest in the scripted programming that you're plugging.

The two other big problems are 1.) the demo for the Olympics keeps skewing older every cycle and gets further and further away from the demographic whom they would covet for a show like Grimm.  2.) The Olympics are in London this cycle and that means a six-hour time shift which also means a whole lot less live coverage.  The less live coverage there is the worse the viewership is.  Just wait until you see the demo numbers for the Olympics.  They won't exactly blow you away.

When I say the CW wasn't successful in their previous early premiere endeavor, it wasn't in comparison to other networks.  I was judging the CW's success by CW standards and even by their standards the early launch was a failure.  I don't expect any different from NBC.

  11. Actually had tried that back in the earlier days and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. I prefer for Grimm to air in mid October to help me get the Halloween vibe going. I hate frequent interruptions and long ass hiatuses (as does everyone). NBC has a hit, why try to kill the momentum, it's beyond me. They could maybe develop webisodes and/or a graphic novel to help ease the wait over the summer but to premiere a season 2 for a show like this after the Olympics no less, nope, a disaster waiting to happen. I hope they find an appropriate lead in for the show or move it up to 8p as well. I was hoping for a mercy pass for Awake and for them to pair them. But apparently that was extreme wishful thinking. I wonder if the NBC VP of Programming is related to The CW VP of Programming because they are both idiots of extreme measure and that has to be genetic, right?

  12. I haven't been interested in The Olympics in a really long time. A lot of people feel the same way. I hope they weren't banking on this strategy.

  13. Be patient with Grimm.  It starts out slow in the first half.  Numerous plot threads are dropped and then reappear much later but the show really starts to hit its stride in the second half of the season once Grimm starts to do a better job of mixing in the mythology stuff with the procedural elements.

  14. Thanks for the heads up.  I usually give the series I watch in the summer 1 full season to hook me.

  15. I think they both are operating under the "nothing else is working, might as well be bold" plan.  I for one am encouraged by that because they are both teetering over the edge.  We'll know for sure where they are at by upfronts.  However, if I were a Grimm fan I would be very encouraged.  Let's face it.  The Olympics are going to be the biggest thing NBC has all year.  For them to choose Grimm to capitalize on it means that they have a lot of faith in it and want to promote it.  NBC has gotten a lot of flack for putting Grimm on Fridays and this may be the best way to remedy some of that.  Also no one can fault NBC if it doesn't pick up Awake for another year.  For that you have to blame Nielsen viewers.
