Sherlock - Steven Moffat reveal new villains and more

Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat has suggested that the detective will not be facing his original nemesis Moriarty in future series.

As far as fans know, Moriarty died at the end of series two, having shot himself ahead of Sherlock’s now legendary dive from the top of a hospital building.

But if Sherlock can survive that – and we know that he does – could his arch-enemy also have faked his death?

While Moffat doesn’t answer that question for sure, he has made it clear that Moriarty (Andrew Scott) will not feature heavily in future series of Sherlock and that fans should expect new adversaries for Benedict Cumberbatch's detective.

“Moriarty’s a one-shot deal in the original [books]. I don’t want [Sherlock] to turn into a show that’s about one villain and one hero,” said Moffat.“Moriarty was great because he was a surprise. Every time you bring him back he won’t be as big a surprise.

  1. I loved Andrew Scott's Moriarty but I'm glad they aren't going to bring him back. His arc was completed flawlessly, trying to resurrect him would only cheapen it.

  2. I don't want Moriarty back. He had a good run, let new villains have their turn.

  4. I'm glad there are no plans for Moriarty's return, cause even though Andrew Scott was brilliant, I can't believe Jim could have survived. He looked pretty dead to me!

  5. I'm both glad and sad that Moriarty won't be back, he could have had a flash back episode like many of the original stories are written.  But he was only ever really in one story, so he's had a good run in this version.

Be nice to see him Who mind.,..,.

  7. Moriarty was fabulous but I also want to see a new adversary for Sherlock.

  8. I think the next villain will be Sebastian Moran. In the original canon he's Moriarty's sniper and right-hand man, and he shows up in the story right after Sherlock's return.

  9. Agreed: Moran was a fantastic villain in his own right, and it would would be a shame for the 'Sherlock Returns' episode - whether or not they base it directly on "The Empty House - to leave him out!

  10.  Ohmygod, no spoilers!..just kidding, and totally agree. As soon as Moriarty mentioned three shooters I knew they would adapt the Empty House which deals with three henchmen of Moriarty's

  11. Sherlock does not deal with the things Supernatural does, so they wouldn't.

  12. I look forward to the new season.

  13. Yeah well, Moriarty's death was pretty obvious, wasn't it? I couldn't see him return in any way (other than in flashbacks), and it's good if they don't turn Sherlock into another Supernatural ;)
