The River - Netflix Eyes ABC Drama

22 Mar 2012

I’ve learned that the streaming giant has had conversations with The River producer ABC Studios about the possibility of continuing the thriller/horror series on Netflix. Sources stress that the talks are exploratory at this point in the context of a larger conversation between ABC Studios and Netflix. The River never got traction on ABC, finishing its midseason run with a 1.4 18-49 rating for its finale on Tuesday. But it is the type of show — heavily serialized genre series — that works well on streaming services like Netflix.

  3. I hope they continue it! I really like this series.

  4. Why don't they try to start up their own network?  It can't be any worse than the CW, so long as you don't follow in Dawn Ostroff's incompetence and poor decision making.

  5. The same way they were in talks with Terra Nova...and now nothing has come of it, it seems like every show that gets cancelled now will be linked with it!

  6. Why does it seem like every series that is about to get cancelled gets its own "Netflix Eyes ____" treatment?

The only show I could see this working out well for is if Fringe gets cancelled or something like that. Something with a dedicated fanbase that is more online than present in tv ratings.

  7. Because you can stream their content already without commercials whenever you want, with full control over pausing, etc. and you don't even need a DVR.

Why the hell would I want to start a tv channel when I effectively already have another market (the INTERNET!) in my pocket?

  8. Exactly. It's the new "DirecTV will save our show!" post...

  10. Fringe or Community could possibly work as they have the critical acclaim and loyal fanbase but yeah a show in its first season I can't imagine would be a good investment

  11. The River is excellent. The creepiest horror show that I've seen on TV, including cable. It wasn't perfect but I looked forward to every episode. And it's not just a horror series, it's a mystery, fantasy adventure, and family drama and I liked most of the cast.

Personally I feel promising freshman shows are just as good an investment as any, because it's only one season to get caught up with for newer viewers and many shows improve after their first season.

If there's plenty of good material for a second season I hope Netflix picks it up.

  12. Well at least this does sound like a show Netflix can realistically afford. And because it's so serialised I actually think it would be an excellent fit for them....
