Like a few other shows, I only watched because there was nothing else on and I ended up loving it! I'm definitely going to watch again.
I like the differences between the realities. Hate the male therapist, love Cherry Jones.
Speaking of Cherry Jones, I thought she had gotten old since appearing on Signs, and was surprised to find out that it's been ten years since the movie came out. That threw me for a loop!
And whoa, the wife knows about the alternate realities thing! I figured she wouldn't find out for a while.
:S I'm really desapointed right now. Like ... ah..
BUT okay I've been waiting for it for TOO long so like I built it up, gonna rewatch saturday see if I still feel the same way since I kinda was freaking out over life during it.
After watching the previews, I sincerely hope it doesn't turn into the run-of-the-mill government conspiracy. Not a big fan of Laura Innes or the guy with the big nose. I really liked the way the two crimes were woven together. Would really like to see progression on "I had a dream" with Wilmer and the hunch with Steve Harris.
I could be dead wrong but it seemed like there was a little spark between the coach and him.
Still loved it. Really hope the show did well and NBC keeps it around for quite a while. (The preview for this season with Innes did give me too much of a The Event vibe for my liking, but I seriously doubt they're going to go the government conspiracy route for just one guy who can't be sure whether he's dreaming or not.)
I think I'd be a lot more interested if the show was made of just psychological examinations and what's-his-face's interactions with his family. I did not care one bit about the tacked-on police cases; they seemed so trivial and waaay too simple (no motive and what-not).
Fantastic start! It was a bit mind bending on trying to figure out which world was which, but enjoyed it all and felt that Jason was fantastic in the role..... looking forward to the next ep
I thought it was good for what it was. I was really excited by the premise, but now I'm not sure it's a series I'll stick with. I kind of really wish that it wasn't a crime drama too. The fact that it's a crime drama makes the two realities a gimmick, and not the premise. I liked the tennis coach, but I don't want to see the main character date her. It just seems too adulterous, and I've never been able to find adulterers likeable. Especially when they aren't abused by their spouses or something.
I enjoyed it, thou it does feel like it will be another CotW kinda show the cast and premis is gonna have me staying tuned for the time being. I'm not entirely sure how it can sustain itself for long, so I'm hoping for some big twists along the way.
The sad part about this series is that networks are scared to do a serialized story and need to find a workaround to make the show enough COTW to pacify the masses of sheeple.
The premise of a man not knowing (or caring) which version of his life is real and which version is the dream is awesome and is just amplified by the stellar performance of Jason Isaacs! The rest of the cast fills out with very talented actors as well - One of the strongest casts on network TV. That in itself is a nice change of pace from the majority of shows on network TV!
The other aspect I really like is that it is shaping up to be a smartly done series and not watered down like almost every procedural out there. It's too early to be sure I know, but it seems like it will continue to be intricate and not formulaic like every other procedural.
I wish that they removed the case of the week entirely and went with a show about this specific cop and not his cases. Concentrate on his life and the mystery, but alas that is just not done on network TV at this moment in time. Every show has to have some episodic elements that the masses can latch onto. Which is why I have not loved a new network series in years frankly.
I digress.... That fact aside, I think AWAKE could become a serious contender for Must See TV! That is something that only applies to a handful of new shows in the last couple years!
I wish it was not a crime drama as much too. I think that every network show has to have a procedural element these days though. They could not just make it about Michael Britten's life and trauma... it's the LOST-effect sadly.
I do differ on thinking it's a gimmick I guess. I see the central thrust of the series as Britten's life.. or lives. The procedural aspect and cop drama will be there, but I don't think it plays out like a cop procedural with a man living in two worlds. To me it reads as a man living in two worlds, who happens to be a cop. Subtle difference maybe....
I'm not a big fan of adulterers in general, but I don;t see the need of "liking" every character. Their unlikability can make them very watchable to me I guess. I think of my favorite TV character right now, Walter White from Breaking Bad, and he may be one of the more despicable people on the planet if you break him down..... Yet I find him utterly captivating to watch and likable in an anti-hero sort of way.
LOST fooled people into getting hooked on a genre show....and then when they realized it...many bailed.
Awake HAS to have the procedural element, or it won't survive on network television. I for one enjoyed the cases, mainly because of how they bled together. It may get old, soon, though. Even the cases in Fringe really irritate me.
I LOVED IT!! It started with bang, and within the first few minutes you knew you were in for a ride..But i will reserve judgement (at least) until a few more episodes air...
Definitely one of the best pilots of the 2011/2012 seasons I really liked how simply they introduced the idea. However, I am not sure if it can keep up the quality and I hope it doesn't lean too much on the procedural cop show elements. I really liked the interaction with the 2 therapists.
i liked it. It was complicated but interesting. I'll continue watching but i already watch VD, SC and POI the same night so i will be dvr'ing it for friday. Unless the ratings start to fall (hope to god thats not the case) and POI is fine then i'll watch it live but its always VD, SC, POI, then Awake. I kinda liked the red/wife universie a little better. I like jason isaccs and his character is solid. In the blue reality i like his son, the coach i liked, and the therapist was ok. I hate that partner he took wilmer's spot and also kinda boring. In red reality his wife is ok, his therapist there is interesting i feel like everytime i watch them jason's gonna punch him, lol, and wilmer is fun i like him.
We were introduced to both realities. Mhmm sounds familiar oh ya fringe also has two worlds where peter is alive and other one hes dead.
1.Red world where wife is alive and son is dead.
2.Green world where son is alive and wife is dead.
What if theres an actually third reality where he is in fact dead or in a coma but his wife and son are alive and his mind believes hes the lucky one where hes wife and son arent so lucky.
If you recall when he woke up in the car his wife and son were dead after the car landed upside down, now we know his wife and son are alive in opposite realities, whos to say he might be actually dead or in a coma which allows him to be in two worlds at two different times a day.
he wakes up to see his wife alive but wat if he is still sleeping where his son is alive and when he wakes up to see his son he sleeps where his wife is alive.
Point being is my theory is that he is dead or in a coma which could explain his wife and son alive in different worlds.
I really hope you're right about them keeping Britten's lives central, I could get behind that if it turns out that way, even though I don't think it's ideal.
I don't need to like every character, but it does really depend on the series for me. For a series like this, I have to like the lead because he's presented as a man with a sympathetic problem and a lot of pain he has to deal with, and if I don't like him, then I care less about what happens to him, and if I care less about what happens to him, then there isn't much point in watching the series. For a series like Mad Men, I can find everyone absolutely wretched and still be interested because the series is focused on corruption, egotism and amorality in the ad industry, and the characters reflect that.
Sometimes found it different to remember which reality we were in. I guess I could use rubber bands too. :-). Loved the son's tennis match and him breaking down, that was really touching. And great use of 'Maybe not' by Cat Power, a great song by a great artist :-).
Agreed. One tacked on case would have been bad enough... but two? It's clever how they're somehow linked between realities, but apart from that, they seemed a bit pointless.
I've been waiting on this show since it was picked up and I'm happy to say I wasn't disappointed! Can't wait for next week's episode. (and that is exactly what a pilot should aspire to)
I found this to be a very beautiful 40 minutes of television. But... when it ended I felt concerned. Nothing actually happened. We were introduced to a character, his dilemma and the people in his life(s). But nothing else.
My worry is this: This show seems to be trying to juggle the main character's complicated psychological (if that's what it is) dilemma, two sets of suppoting characters and TWO CotWs (very mediocre ones if I might add). This is already way too much to squeeze into 40 minutes of television, but still there was something missing. Plot! At no point was there any suggestion that there might be a REASON for what's happening to the main character.
Is this how it is going to be? Just him flipping between lives until the finale when we might get some kind of tacked on reason for it. I agree with Boris, above who said the guy is probably ina coma and both worlds are actually a dream and his wife and sona re both dead (or both alive for a happy finale). There's nothing here to suggest any overarcing plot. And who's the antagonist?
And that is where the main problem arises. If there is no averarcing plot with a clear antagonist, then it must be strictly CotW. agreed? But the CotWs shown in this pilot felt like tacked on subplots. I cared nothing about the little girl or the dead cabbies.
I think the only way this can be saved (at least for me) is if they ditch the CotW format, and replace it with two longer, more substantial crime investigations (one for each world), and explore how the two link up in crazy ways. Also, it would be great if he could meet other people who are experiencing the same thing, and what's more, they can meet each other in either of the worlds. And perhaps there could be a bad guy who has learned to flip bewteen worlds, and he is the guy behind the crimes they are investigating. Something like that.
If they don't do something like that, then it will end up being repetitively sentimental rubbish about a man going "I don't want to chooooose" for an entire season or more.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Like a few other shows, I only watched because there was nothing else on and I ended up loving it! I'm definitely going to watch again.

Is it next week's Thursday already?
ReplyDeleteThat might be an ok plot for a movie but as a weekly show no way. Can I have my hour back please!!

ReplyDeleteOne of the 5 best pilots this season... easily.

the best pilot on NBC since Heroes!! hope it keeps its quality

Watched it by accident actually and I don't regret it AT ALL. It looks great! And I just adore Jason Isaacs;)
