The Vampire Diaries - Season 3 - Zach Roerig: 'Matt Is a Nice Piece of Humble Pie for Mystic Falls'

Since The Vampire Diaries' current season began, good-natured jock Matt Donovan has been through the ringer. He's nearly died in an attempt to see his late vampire sister Vicki, his immediate family is nonexistent and his love life (once happily dating Elena and Caroline, at different times of course) has tragically hit a wall. But come Thursday's episode "Dangerous Liaisons," centered on a ball the Originals throw, he'll be catching the eye of another woman in town.

  1. Ohhh, Matt.. if only you weren't expendable.

  2. He is just that nice guy who never finished first. Just turn him already.

  3. I'm not sure that I agree with his assessment of Matt in this interview.  After high school, I don't see why he'd want to stick around Mystic Falls.  The best thing for Matt would be to get far away from that place.

  4. Yes, exactly, why wouldn't he run like Hell????

This whole *he's the only pure human left and that's his purpose on the show* doesn't sit well with me. When he didn't know what was going on, there was a point to it. How did the rest of the characters handle his ignorance, etc. But now he knows. There are lots of humans on the show, some with supernatural powers - most without - that make him expendable if that's the only reason they keep him on.

  5.  Agreed.  Everything about Mystic Falls has worked against Matt.  Elena dumped him for a vampire and Caroline moved on from him to a werewolf.  His mother left him, he has to hold down a job while going to school just to stay afloat, and he's routinely being injured and dicked around by vampires.  On top of this his sister was turned and killed, came back as a ghost, he almost killed himself to contact her, then she had to be snuffed out all over again.

The producers make excuses to keep him around because all possible logic points to him selling that house and getting the hell out of there.

  6. Seriously? Does anyone actually LIKE Matt? I'd rather have characters like Jeremy and Tyler stick around and have Matt just...go away. Can we replace his main status with Elijah? Pretty please?

  7. Well, I am the minority here but I think is good to have a human character, someone who sees the crazy world they are living in. I know Matt is expendable but he doesn't feel to me like a obstacle to any plot, so for my part he can stay. It would be good, though, that the writers give him something to do, some perspective at least...

But of course, if someone HAS TO DIE (It seems obligatory in TVD), I would prefer it to be Matt than Elijah, Rebekah, KLAUS!, Alaric, Katherine... even Kol who promise to be interesting.
