We've optimized a number of scripts and removed the Badgeville "leaderboard" widget. If you want to see the leaderboard you can still see it on the Movies Page.
We've also optimized the site further for those users using the Google Chrome browser and you should see even quicker load times. So now's the time to start using Chrome if you don't already.
We'll try to to further improve the performance over the next few weeks.
Hopefully you'll notice the slightly improved speed times.
Any questions, as usual, don't hesitate in asking away in the comments.

Hey all,
Over the last few days you may have noticed some changes to the SpoilerTV site. We've been doing this to improve the page loading speed.
These changes have resulted in a the Avg page loading times from being 20 Seconds on average to now under 12 seconds.

The changes that we've implemented are
1) Removal of the Facebook Like Button. This was one of the main causes of slowdowns. Relying on Facebook servers being fast and available was something we could not deal with anymore, so we've removed it.
2) Badgeville Activities Widget. This widget which showed all the activities on the site has been removed. It was another major cause of slowdowns as well as using a lot of memory.
3) We've gone through a lot of the behind the scenes code to optimize it.
4) The site has been optimized for Google Chrome, the fastest and most reliable browser currently.
5) We've also optimized the speed of the Gallery and the Forum so you should see an increase in speed on both of these.
6) We've also removed the GetGlue button due to speed issues
If you have any questions or problems, please let us know in the comments below.

Great job! Now that you mention the changes and I switching over to Chrome a few weeks ago, the sites load much faster. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the updates, I've been wondering what happened to the facebook button and that explains it and the pages are loading a lot better so thank you for the continued improvements!!
ReplyDeleteYes, it's loading a lot quicker now for me as well.
ReplyDeleteUsing Chrome makes it a lot more "snappy" !
The gallery is super quick now.
Thanks, glad you're noticing the improvement.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sharon, yes the Gallery is very quick now :)
ReplyDeleteNo worries, it was starting to get very sluggish so thought it was a good time to give it a tweak :)
ReplyDeleteAhhh, this answers my question from earlier about the FB button XD
ReplyDeleteCheers for continuing to improve the site Andy!!
Ha, no worries Sandi :)
ReplyDeleteThat's what she said......
ReplyDelete(I'll get mah coat)
I wondered where the updates button went!
ReplyDeleteNice changes! I like them.
I have noticed that it was much more quicker and thanks for letting us know about the changes esp. the FB button :)
ReplyDeleteThe site was slow? Never noticed haha
ReplyDeleteNo worries :-)
ReplyDeleteI didn't notice any problems in terms of the slowness of loading pages until last night.oh well.
ReplyDeleteSo does that mean the Get glue button is also gone for good?
Ah yes, I'll have to update the post. Yes, we also removed the GetGlue button as well as it was another cause of slowness
ReplyDeleteit def. worked! the site is loading much faster now.. Great work!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the work guys!
ReplyDeleteThanks guys, a faster site is a better site!
ReplyDeleteYay! All the problems I was having before have been resolved! Thank you guys soo much.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, glad it's working better for you
ReplyDeleteNice tweaks! I really notice a huge difference in speed, I'm just wondering,
ReplyDeleteis that problem where that welcome-button (if you don't login) is hovering over the show menu fixed?
I believe that problem only happens if you use addones that modify the css like AD Block or Stylebot etc.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing we can do about that I'm afraid.
Definitely see a difference in the load speed. I was wondering about the FB and GetGlue buttons now i know. Thanks for the updates!!!!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering where the FB like button went. Not sad to see it go if it was slowing things down. I prefer the streamlined look of no activities too. Thanks! Things do seem to be loading faster. It also seems like it's not getting stuck as much, forcing me to close out and open in another window. As always, your hard work to make the site better and better is very much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dahne, glad the site is working better for you :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I sort of figured the FB button was gone for this reason. I had noticed times when the page wouldn't even finish loading as it was trying to find it. Appreciate the update!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how much faster it is.I thought it was about the same but i had a problem on my end,now that that is fixed i can really see the difference, thanks Andy and gang!
ReplyDeleteI've always used Chrome. Love it soooo much better that Internet Explorer or Firefox! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff guys. It feels so much quicker now, especially on Chrome!
ReplyDeleteLoving the new speedier load times!
ReplyDeletePlus as an added bonus I no longer get page crashes from Flash or Java errors... whichever it was!
Awesome, yet, we tidied some code that might have been the cause of some load/timouts which could lead to page crashes.
ReplyDeleteOut of interest what browser was giving you the crashes?
Chrome.
ReplyDeleteI occasionally use others (like Firefox for certain add-ons), but almost exclusively use Chrome for SpoilerTV and other surfing.
The page crashes happened if I left a page open for an extended period of time without refreshing it. It would gradually hog system resources and CPU usage and then get to the crash point.
I never really determined the reason so maybe it was the messy code you mentioned? I do know I experimented to see if it made a difference if I left open pages with videos or not and it did not seem to make a difference in crash times really...
Ah thanks. I think it might have been the old badgeville activity widget. If left opened for an extended period of time it used to "memory leak". This would eventually lead to crashes and other random and spurious things happening
ReplyDeleteTime wise that makes sense yeah.. I don't recall any of those crashes before Badgeville and the widget were on each page.... I'm not positive, but if memory serves that sounds about right....
ReplyDeleteYep, happended to me once when I left it on overnight lol
ReplyDeleteOff topic, but....
ReplyDeleteHoly @#%@ when did Arsenal take the number 4 spot? XD
I have not followed the rankings as much as watched random games for the past month or two and then I hear they are at 4! Congrats!
Hopefully it lasts now that Henry is leaving and Lurch Mertesacker is injured! XD
Ha, yes. Good weekend with Chelsea, Newcastle and Liverpool all losing :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a lean mean fighting machine! Can really notice the differences today!
