So, Observers can walk through walls, and disappear at will, and it seems we now have confirmation that September has gone rogue. By the way this is the first time in Fringe history that September was actually called by the name September that I can recall, unless I am forgetting something. This was an awesome episode, I must admit.
- Anyone with a high school education can tell you Deus Ex Machina means "God in the Machine" not "Hand of God". - An FBI badge can't get you past airport security? - Although it pains me to criticize Anna, her performance as Altlivia was way too over the top.
Great seeing Walter interact differently with Asptrid! Including getting her name correct on second try, and yet he manages to get Astrid's name wrong everytime! XD
I would think Peter would want to work with Astrid honestly... Herencyclopdic breakdown and data analysis skills could come in handy for him finding a way back home. Then again maybe he needs a more "out of the box" concept that only Walter could com up with...
I love Asptrid's question about Peter, "Does he always do all the jobs?" XD
Walter and Fauxlivia had some great banter in this episode! XD Bad Faux for taunting him.. but oh so fun!
Wait.. what? The Observer used a window as a doorway ? O-o
Blue mist. Red mist. Death kiss? Wait... what?
Reiden Lake makes another appearance!
Flattened time = Observer tech or a means for the Observers doing teir job? Neil certainly used it in a similar manner to anticipate/ know what his mom would say before she said it herself.....
A lot of parent child dynamics explored in this episode! Both Astrids and their dad's, Peter and Walter, Neil and his mom, Walter and Astrid....
So in 1986 Neil witnesses September saving Peter and Walter on Reiden Lake and finds a souvenir left behind. He then goes obsessively crazy analyzing said instrument and leaves MIT to "save" people. Did he discover the "flattened time" theory on his own after witnessing September or did the device unlock certain Observer knowledge and secrets to him? Interesting...
This was a very fun episode to me!! I liked the tie in to the myth arc and I really liked the interaction of the tow FRINGE teams.
It did seem a little odd to me that The Observers were unaware of Peter's return. I assume September was in charge of this chain of events and they assumed he did his job, but for something as important as Peter I would think they would keep better tabs on the situation.....
Jasika Nicole proved tonight what has already been known for awhile, that every member of the Fringe cast are brilliant. Making Angels was one of those episodes where you can laugh and cry and have all sorts of different emotions all for the same reason.
Loved it! Such a sweet episode, with the two Astrids, Walter and AltLivia bonding, AltAstrid suggesting to Walter that he just go ahead and love Peter, because he's like a son. I just did not like our Astrid's lie about her relationship with her father. If she wanted to help her Alt with her emotions, simply saying, "It wasn't you, it was him" would have been fine, without the elaboration. Jasika Nicole has a sister with autism disorder and I think that's why she cried so easily in this episode. Very touching.
I'm confused though. Didn't September meet Olivia in a church, when he told her she would have to die? And wasn't he himself dying of a gunshot wound?
I liked Feaux, she wasy playfull and smiling and teasing.. Gave Liv the little kick in the butt to actually start opening up to Peter, so points. I liked the food bonding she had with walter and the little playing around, it was fun.
About TSA, who knows. Really securitys wacky
The producers mentioned in an interview that Astrid/ and altastrid are the acception to the doubles, where there difference isn't as much and only how they were raised but chromosomal as well. They will probs elaborate. idk.
I've usually heard "God FROM the Machine" as its translation..... but, "Although this phrase is somewhat diluted in transliteration as earlier in history, the phrase "god from the machine" implies the old use of mechanical manipulation, i.e. to be made with one's hands. So if there were a more generally accurate way of translating deus ex machina into English, it would be "god from our hands" or "god that we make", implying that the device of said god is entirely artificial or conceived by man. "Enotes: http://www.enotes.com/topic/Deus_ex_machinaHand of God may not be far of in that sense... Plus, it fits in the modern colloquial usage as a the out of nowhere contrived or atificial solution to the otherwise unsolvable problem. The hand of God moving the pieces in the only possible position att the only possible time....The overzealous TSA agents did seem a bit odd though!I think their first response would be to stop someone rushing through even if they held up badges, but once they visually confirmed they were FBI I would assume they would let them pass and call their supervisor etc... Not stop them and wait for a supervisor. I will have to ask a few friends and relatives who are pilots and flight attendants and see what their opinions are on how it would go down at a real airport....
I'm not sure anyone agrees on the causation of Autism right now. I think most experts do agree that environmental aspects could play a larger role than many thought in the past. Prenatal infections, environmental agents, and the mother's condition all could play roles and all would be different for each Astrid's mom. Prenatal care being one important factor could easily be the culprit here. Over there they go about handling prenatal care differently so it could be that easily... who knows though.
Has Altlivia always been this annoying? I haven't found her swagger and 'tude overly obnoxious in the past, but she was bugging the shit out of me in this episode.
Am I crazy or did Altliv's line "It turns out I like the nice guys" make anyone else think she might be with Lincoln now? She broke up with Frank last we saw her. Maybe the show is just pushing the whole Peter vs. Lincoln issue so hard that I'm seeing things. I think that could explain why she was obnoxiously playful in this episode.
Have you seen/read The Time Traveller's Wife? I think September is doing the same thing. Time isn't linear to the Observers. Why should death be at the end of a series of events?
Another awesome ep featuring Jasika who really brought the goods tonight. I loved loved the interplay between "the viper" Fauxlivia and Walter, and pretty much everything that both Astrids did. I didn't quite get why Walter was a bit resentful of Peter as if he felt that Peter was doing everything that he himself normally did, but of course it made for the perfect setup for the logic bomb that Altstrid dropped on Walter. Of course, the forward movement of what consequences of September's actions/inactions will have and Olivia looking at Peter in a slightly different way was interesting and welcome. Solid ep that will definitely be viewed again.
I did too. I thought it was brilliant. I'm kinda confused as to why people didn't like it. This was one episode that might be in my top 5 of the entire series for me. So many clues were left about upcoming stuff and I LOVED how Walter interacted with Alt-Liv. I wish we could see more of it!
I definitely liked the interaction with everyone and their doubles, and AltAstrid with Walter was some damn fine stuff. Also like Olivia warming up to Peter more, and Altlivia trying to make amends since she's not that bad.
And go September! I'm on your side! Way to shake things up!
This show frustrates me at times because I watch it, then when its over, I find myself saying "How are people not watching this!?" And then I just feel bad for the people missing out.
ITA! People are missing out on amazing television. I can't watch TV 'normally' any more because this show has set the bar for all other shows to be measured by. Nothing compares to it!
And I gotta say, I'm really confused by the Alt-Livia hate. People DO realize it's the SAME actress right playing both parts? I'm not sure if it's just fan-girling for one couple or not. But either way, that character has given some great motivation for all the other characters to act off of. I'm not sure what the complaints are about her. I'd love for them to show more of her in her alt-life on the other side out of the office.
I have an autistic daughter and when altastrid was talking about her fathers love, and being different and normal. i had chills and tears in my eyes. I love this show.
This was NOT an astrid centric episode, it had a lot of astrid to be sure but she didnt drive the story therefore it wasnt "astrid centric" while a great episode and jasika nicole FINALLY got the screentime she deserved (and she was fantastic) it was a COTW with a lot of astrid on the side, 73 episodes in and episodes wasting on the *shudder* soul magnets, and not even one episode focused entirely on astrid!? ugh, lincoln has more screentime than any of nina, broyles and astrid put together this season its horrible, the one scene he was in this episode was bad and cringeworthy just because he was in it!
Really liked episode overall, especially scenes with both Astrids and Walter/Altlivia. Maybe plot itself wasn't that good. But all the Observers stuff is amaizing!
I do not like the actor who played the Observer tonight. He just rubbed me the wrong way.
Can someone help me out...when, in this timeline, did Alt-Olivia come over to this side and betray Walter? I don't remember seeing that this season.Great episode. I've always like Alt-Astrid. I really liked her here. I just thought all of her interactions were lovely scenes.
Loved Walter's reaction to Peter pushing him out.
Really, the TSA can stop federal agents in pursuit of a suspect? Their best course of action is to stop the agents in their tracks and let the suspect get away? I do wish the writers had come up with a better way to let him get away.
So, does this mean the Observers kill people? Have killed people? I don't like that addition to the mythology. Now, I'm wondering how, exactly September disobeyed orders? Did he move Peter to a new timeline rather than remove hi all together or did he bring Peter back after removing him? Did the Observer gadget help BFCrazy guy see the future or could he see it and the gadget just delivered the killing stuff?
And here's where this whole Peter never existed tweak causes me brain issues.
I've been convinced, since the season started, that she's still with Frank. She broke up with Frank because she was carrying Peter's baby. She never met, fell for, and slept with Peter so the baby never happened.
This is also why I am completely confused by the whole FauxLivia thing. Is it that FauxLivia's assignment to swap places with Olivia really happened? When did the exchange get made? How? Peter wasn't taken back over there so Olivia didn't have to go rescue him....
It is actually "God from the Machine" as Darque said, and it means basically something that doesn't follows the laws of causality and just appears out of nothing to "force" an event. Hand of God is a pretty nifty way to put it, since "God from the Machine" Is too much of a literal translation of the latin.
And I think that they were trying to show that TSA have that kind of power? Was it a PSA??
I did think that Altlivia was specially chirpy, but It made me wonder that it was suposed to be a reflection of the relationship she shared with Walter. I'm thinking something along the lines of "daughter substitute"
And I don't think they will open that bag of cats, since we still don't know what actually causes autism. Still, it does seems to be inclined to be cause by a external cause in the Fringe universe.
This episode became a personal favorite. A lot of little moments and interactions, an interesting CotW, but the Astrid's win the price.
It was just heartbreaking to see AltAstrid trying to cope. That scene where AltAstrid asks if father would have loved her more had she been normal made me tear up. Jasika clearly shows her knowledge bout the condition and her acting was so nuanced, how she reacted to the social cues and the small manerisms. I just loved the Astrids so much, I want awards for those performances (Nicole has to be nominated in something for this episode)
I don't think we technically saw Fauxlivia betray Walter in this timeline, but I assume she infiltrated our Fringe team much like Faixlivia did in the original Blue Verse when Walternate had captured Olivia in Over There part 2 and then into Season 3.
It went probably went down differently, but I think we can assume Fauxlivia stil impersonated Olivia and Walter felt betrayed when he found out.
I wonder if Neil "discovered" how to live within "flattened time" or if the device allowed him to live with in flattened time too! Is the device September left behind something akin to a personal Boom Boom Machine? I can see the other side too though... Neil was brilliant and driven enough to comprehend flattened time after witnessing September saving Peter. So I'm not sure I guess......
The Observers do kill people, we have seen the inter-dimensional hitman Donald Long got his orders from a suitcase fax machine that had that distinctive red/blue lighting Observers use. He was sent to kill the girl August loved... I forget her name (Christine maybe?). In the end he killed August of course. So killing ((at least hiring an assassin to kill) has been part of their mythology since Season 2....
Hmmm, so that would imply that her mission was more aggressively initiated. In season 2 it was a matter of seizing an opportunity. That really interesting and makes me wish I could watch those eps along side these.
Probably her mission was just about to seize the opportunity just as in the original timeline, and the best way to succeed was to befriend Walter.
But then it gots me thinking how did they even get to the parallel universe if Olivia doesn't knows how to fly between? There's a lot of questions about the Peterasing!
Just adding my $0.02 worth of trivia to the discussion. The term 'Deus Ex Machina' originates in ancient Greek theater. It describes a sudden appearance of a God to change the outcome of a situation, and the God 'floated' in from the sky with the help of a sort of stage crane - hence the 'machine'.
As for autism, I recently read about identical twins who both have autism but completely different sets of behavior. Scientists suspect that this may be the result of one of them needing serious surgery very soon after birth. Who knows, maybe something similar happened to Altstrid either during or after birth, causing a very mild form of autism that's present in both to manifest itself a lot more strongly.
Actually, is it just me or is the Altstrid in this timeline less distant than the one we met in S3? I don't think that one ever made eye contact with anybody, while this one does on occasion.
I've been wondering too whether this means that the Observers don't have any special powers just some very advanced tech that helps them for example to see past, present and future.
And I don't get either how December could be unaware of what September has done - or didn't do. Peter's been back for quite a while now, and if Observers see everything that's happening at the same time surely December must have noticed that his orders were not followed through, especially in an important matter like this.
At the very beginning of this season when the two Olivias were exchanging files our Olivia said that the Faux impersonated her for months, and the other one taunted her about how boring her life was. I also seem to remember that it was somehow implied that our Olivia was kidnapped and locked up to make room for the substitute. That would explain how this happened although Peter wasn't involved.
I thought I recalled that being said, but couldn't be sure. I guess we still don't need the details, but that was not the point of revealing that information. It was done more to let us know that events we had seen happen did in fact happen in this timeline, but they happened in slightly different manners.
All of the awards for Jasika, she was simply wonderful in this episode. I loved how we got an Astrid episode that was about character moments rather than the obvious route of Astrid saving the team or something.
I think its so lovely how the two teams are slowly working together, having Alt!Liv along for the ride was so much fune
Are you flirting with me?
Tee hee I love Alt!Liv so much in this episode, her intereaction with Walter is so great.
Oooo the Observers at the end! Oh September you are in deep trouble now
such an amazing and emotionally episode. I loved the two teams' interaction and the inside conversations between the doubles, those things are IMO the best in Fringe's episodes' screen-time.
I can see the producers are trying to answer slowly the questions about the observers, which is good, but I don't believe they can handle it. they sank too deep with the questions they opened about them, some things contradicts with other things we know about the observers, like... they catched bullets and their hand didn't had any scratch, but he was shot? and those people, who make no mistakes and know everything, now they lose weapons? if the series goes down without closing the observers story, I will be disappointed.
I'd forgotten about the hired hitman. I remember the episode. The implication was that the Observers themselves couldn't do the killing so they had to hire someone 'of our time' so to speak. So, the idea that the gadget had the killing compound in it is what threw me. But, if the device was the 'time flattener' and Neil adapted it to the killing compound then...that all makes logical sense to me.
The device was the "Time-Flattener" so it allowed Neil to be witnin time (Past, present and future).... and it also allowed him to be a savior to these people he knew would die painfully or slowly.
He did not kill them directly so much as flattened their time so that their inevitable death happened to them while the device was on. It accelerated their death or showed the victims their future death in the present... in essence he allowed them to die instantly and painlessly.
I have always had issues with religious zealots killing for the cause of good, but I can almost rationalize accelerating an inevitable death so that is less painful or less drawn out. A mercy killing of sorts.
Hmmm... I like that theory... Let's see how many episodes it holds up before Team Bad Robot disproves it in some mind-blowing way! XD
I found the episode really intriguing! It was a wonderful performance from Jasika Nichole and I am glad she had an episode to shine in!
A lot of the episode goes back to the 2026 timeline. It's there we find out Astrid's/Astrids' father(s) is/are Ministers and the whole time period of that timeline gives into the pursuit of Religious beliefs, as the scientific-religious -terrorists: The End of Dayers, use advance flash bombs to attempt to make black holes that lead to the past of the timeline. The 2026 [blue] Astrid said, "God helps those who help themselves", meaning it's up to humanity to save themselves.
In this timeline [red] Astrid comes to meet her counter part out of despair and regret of the loss of her father. The whole aspect of death plagues itself through the episode, as an Asian man named Chet, (which is also the name of Diego's Asian kid helper in "Alcatraz") is able to see the future and attempts to put those who are going to die soon in severe states of death out of their misery before it happens. The [red] Astrid figures out that his ability for him is about God, Heaven, and Divinity...It leads [blue] Olivia to the same conclusion. Chet's wall at his house pegs himself as a "savior"...
But the episode also reflected [blue] Walter. He isn't really helping Peter get home. He keeps taking breaks and gets mad at Peter when he starts using his things. [Red} Olivia is the one who probably points out the truth of the matter, that Walter's anger stems from love--that maybe he actually missed her. --[Red] Astrid too tries to make him aware that Walter might benifit if he would just try to embrace Peter as his son, but clearly Walter seems to not be able to that. --But maybe Walter doesn't want to help Peter with the machine, because he doesn't want Peter to leave.
I also have to argue that Peter too is somewhat distant. He helps, but he doesn't seem emotionally caught up in their lives, as I think he too is focusing on going home and hasn't made the connections yet. (Of course the audience is waiting for the official connection too!)
But the past two episodes have really played up on the future, death, and fate --and lightly give us nods back to Peter, as both Emily ("Forced Perspective") and Chet had lived in Lake Houses, like Walter and Peter, and both ACT OUT TO HELP OTHERS and then allow themselves to die. (Note: "Subject 13" Reference: "The Winter's Tale" main character named Peter Lake). --But all of this still brings me back to "LSD" and the idea that Mr. X pushes Walter our of the Zeppelin over Reden Lake and may be a metaphor/foreshadowing for some Walters' death. And so now I'm worried about these Walters....
I keep coming back to the idea that there are weird variable exchanges occurring and if Peter is actually the cause of some of these people being able to have ability to be able to see the future and choose to take a somewhat existential philosophy to the timeline and if that matters? It's curious that September would have a piece of technology that allows him to tap into the immediate future of the time line and that he lost it apparently in this timeline's 1985! -Again though the tech is similar looking to the tech The End of Dayers use in the 2026 timeline, and may again support that the Observers are made by man in the future of some other already existing timeline, as they too parallel the concept of "a savior" (or Angels), which leads me again to think that their existence might actually be the problem of extremely repeated fate...September really likes to make mistakes!
All of this is most likely leading up to Jones and somewhere near him, if not him, Mr. X resides.
I can't remember if in "August" they that did???? --But since they referred to August as August, it makes sense that they would finally call September by his name. --I think they also said, "September WILL be glad to know..." --Meaning he is still alive! I thought the episode was really heavy, but really good!
Agreed. -And also one could interpret it that man is God's will --so anything man makes is divine. (tools-technology-machines, shapeshifters, Observers, multiple timelines = apotheosis)
"God helps those that help themselves." - Astrid (The Day We Died)
I don't know if you have ever read any of the comics in "The Tales of the Fringe" comics, but really liked the one about how Astrid became an FBI agent!
I think it's up for debate, because August seems to be dead. He has never reappeared and it seems that his death is the cost of Christine Hollis' future...So perhaps they can only die if they sacrifice themselves for someone, but also perhaps it relies on being killed by certain technology, since August was killed with a crazy sonic-flash gun and not by a gun with bullets....
It's wonderful to see the team slowly coming together again. Even though Walter isn't comfortable with Peter yet. AltAstrids' advice to him on this was wise and I think Walter will end up taking it. Jasika did a fantastic job playing two characters and it really showed her talent. It'll be intersting to see what happens to September for not following orders. The whole episode felt more like seasons 1-3 than the first ones of this season. I'm hoping this will keep the ratings climbing.
Actually, Deus ex Machina has everything to do (regardless of what were later uses) with literary devices. Aristotle, for example, disliked those Greek tragedies that employed Deus ex Machina because it meant they were invoking God from nowhere, and resolved a complicated plot through that god's intervention. In that sense, ex machina would mean 'out of thin air' - and refer to god (any of the gods of the Pantheon) resolving any conflicts/problems/destinies. The problem with that device in tragedies is of course that it does not follow plot logic but uses extraneous means. However, regardless of the derogatory, critical sense, that phrase actually is meant to denote a situation where god had his/her hands in some event. Thus 'Hand of God' as long as it is God's hand, not someone acting in God's stead as his hand, is an appropriate translation (though in this ep, the meaning was latter, not the former) Oh, yes, and Deus in Machina would be 'God in the Machine'
It was about time they addressed September's choice not to erase Peter! September is going his own way now and making his own decissions disregarding the "chain of command" and that must have some kind of (negative) effect on the other Observers. I wonder what his motivations are and I hope we delve into that storyline more in the upcoming episodes.
I have to say I didn't love this episode. I thought Jasika was amazing, her portrayal of Alt-Astrid has been sublime since the beginning and in this episode she was specially moving. I'm glad she got to do this!
I was happy to see that September's decission not to erase Peter is finally being adressed and I'm guessing (and hoping) that that's leading to more presence of tht Observers in upcoming episodes.
However, the COTW didn't quite get to me, neither the case itself nor its investigation. I found myself not caring about anything else appart from the Astrids in this episode. So I enjoyed their interactions very much, but for the most part the episode was OK.
I noticed the eye contact thing too! Maybe they decided to shape her character from more severely Autistic or having a severe case of Asperger's to something less socially awkward and more able to connect?
Peter arriving seems to have changed everyone else to some degree, maybe his arrival in this timeline affected Asptrid too?
I caught that line! I thought that it would mean he was alive too, but then I reconsidered somewhat.... If December and the rest of the months were not aware September did not eradicate the Peter-shaped anomele, perhaps they do not know September has been shot or is dead?
I guess the thing about being everywhere at once and capable of knowing anything in an instant is that they have to actually be considering the relevant events. Observers do not know everything or all futures about everything so much as they can see all possible outcomes and know the relevant facts of what they are investigating at the moment. Less omniscient and more proficient "study-ers"! XD
the reunion of both astrid awesome, very emotional and unique describe her weekness ,diference and how embrasce that and try to support and help each other to confront all the issues.
I've been wondering about that. At first I thought that things Over There must have been pretty much the same, because Peter still disappeared at age 8. But then I got to thinking. Without Peter, Olivia wouldn't have crossed over as a young girl and Walternate couldn't have known that Peter had been abducted to a parallel universe. So his whole crusade for revenge wouldn't have happened. Elizabeth did mention to Peter, though, that they had found out that he had died on the other side, but I guess that only happened when the bridge was installed. So with the Fringe team Over There less driven to cause damage to a purported enemy universe, its members' lives could easily have run a different course.
From what I understand so far this season, Altliv still switched with Olivia in order to retrieve pieces of the machine. Peter isn't a part of this equation. I believe Walter mentioned at some point that the other side kept Olivia in a cell the entire time, which is why she didn't know the Alt-Fringe team in this timeline. This makes me guess Altliv came here to make the switch since our Liv never had a reason to go to the other side, but these details still aren't clear (I suppose ourLiv could have had a different reason for crossing over). As for Frank, she said outright that she broke up with him in Enemy of My Enemy, so I think she was with him until that point. Anyway, remember how he talked about feeling distant from her in the original timeline (though obviously Peter was the major reason for that, I still think they would end up feeling distant with him in Texas and her in a parallel universe)? I got the impression he only proposed to her because he felt threatened by that distance, so perhaps their relationship was still a little off. I also like to think it's only a matter of time before she would fall for Lincoln, which is why I'm all on high alert now that Frank's out of the picture. LOL guys, I watch for the plot, I swear. :)
Surprisingly I still have like 15ish other shows I watch, but Fringe is definitely in the Top 5, if not Top 3, of my favorite current TV shows on air right now. It is definitely my favorite supernatural drama.
As for the Altlivia hate, I think some people were in the same boat as Walter where they still resented Altliv for coming over here and being a spy for the other side. Back when we thought her character was evil. I personally kind of like Altlivia now, but I know I was against her back in the 1st half of Season 3. Hopefully we'll see her mesh better with our universe, cause I'd love to see some Olivia + Altlivia smack down against some baddies.
I started calling her that after her first episode since I assumed she had Asperger's Syndrome, but it never really caught on. Even after Jasika revealed the alternate version did have Asperger's.. The odd thing is I tried to come up with a name that first episode and I never thought of Altstrid! XD
Altsrid seems so obvious now... I still like Asptrid though!
The Observers tend to say things in way that doesn't make sense to us. They knew he arrived, but September was suppose to remove him from this timeline too (in one episode he goes and buys some random tech)...IMO The Observers want to remove Peter from "time". So when he showed up here, they told September to fix it, but September just couldn't do it. -Additionally he went out of his way to save Peter from the shapeshifters and warn Olivia (assumingly to change her fate). September has faith that Peter is meant to have some kind of future.
Observers only seem to kill people, when they don't die the way they think they should...August exchanged his life so that C. Hollis could have a future....
I loved this episode. The two Astrids were great and it was nice knowing a little more about them.
Didn't mind Fauxlivia either. I quite enjoyed her's and Walter's little tiff. It was quite funny to watch.
Someone here pointed that Peter is distant and I agree. He helps them but it is in a mechanical way. It is clear that what only matters to him is to go back home and that as soon as possible. Which makes me feel for Walter because I understand his dilemma. I think Walter's attitude towards Peter has a lot to do with his conflicted feelings. Despite what he says I think he has already embraced Peter as his son and really began to enjoy his presence but is too painfully aware (and constatly reminded of by Peter himself) that this presence is only temporary. So Walter tries to be practical, tries to distance himself from Peter but is unable to do so. Consciously or unconsciously he is delaying their work because he's afraid of loosing him again.
I miss September! I'm quite confused about the Observers' convo. How is it possible that they didn't know September refused to abide to the orders sooner? It's been a while that Peter has been back!! Also is this device giving their 'abilities' to the Observers or that guy Neil was smart enough to decode how it works? Don't know but this episode left me anxious for more Observers related episode...
That is exactly how I felt about it. I actually found the episode borderline boring. The saving grace was everything that involved one or both Astrids. I voted OK as well.
Best part of the episode was when Astrid walks in to the lab and sees Altstrid and screams. Olivia says "I've always wondered why nobody does that." LMAO All I could think was "I know, RIGHT?!"
I just loved this episode. It's so nice to see more of Jasika Nicole and she was brilliant as both Astrids. I loved seeing more of alt-Astrid and how she feels about her Aspergers. Walter's interactions with both of them were really sweet as well. I didn't really see Alt-livia as being over-the-top. I don't know if it was intentional or not but it felt like she was overcompensating to me. All other interactions have either been in neutral territory (the bridge) or on her own turf. This was obviously the first time she'd been back to the place where she been deceiving the Fringe team for months. It also seemed like she was trying to endear herself to Walter - given that Olivia is Walter's caretaker in this timeline she presumably had to spend a lot of time with Walter - so he would feel most betrayed. Loved the Observer melting into the glass as well - that was awesome. On the whole, a fantastic episode and hopefully we'll get the chance to see more of Astrid and the other supporting players.
Fantastic episode. - Altlivia has to be hiding some serious emotional stuff behind all that smiling and attitude. I hope we get to find out what's behind that façade she always puts up. - Jasika Nicole was amazing. - Loved that logic bomb that Altstrid dropped on Walter re: Peter. - Walter's instant fondness for Altstrid was very amusing. - What's with the Observer's ET finger? - Peter and Olivia seemed to genuinely enjoy breaking into someone's house together. Maybe that's what Altlivia was getting at with her "turns out I like good guys" comment. - "Check his crotch." "Don't be a prude." "Kirk out." Walter has some of his best lines watching that monitor. - September's gone rogue. That's definitely going to be fun. - Peter seems a little more impatient with this Walter but that's probably due to his eagerness to get home. - So far, it looks as if the biggest change that Peter's presence has brought about is creating a shiny, happy, bi-universal Fringe division. They're getting along, they're more freely coming and going, they stick around to help on cases, it's one big extended Fringe family. Now, someone tell Altlivia what happened with her and Peter in his timeline. I'd like to see her reaction.
September was certainly aware that the others would notice Peter's existence, so he might have done something - I don't know what exactly - to pretend, that he did his job. Used his abilities to 'disable' theirs.
What I enjoyed so much was how Astrid reacted to Alt-Astrid, totally different from the other characters. Yes, she was first shocked but then immediately took he hand and greeted her. Every other character always was some kind of suspicious and anti towards their alternate version so this was a nice change. And I loved Jasika, she did a great job and almost made me cry.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
So, Observers can walk through walls, and disappear at will, and it seems we now have confirmation that September has gone rogue. By the way this is the first time in Fringe history that September was actually called by the name September that I can recall, unless I am forgetting something. This was an awesome episode, I must admit.
ReplyDeleteGreat episode, but a few minor complaints:
ReplyDelete- Anyone with a high school education can tell you Deus Ex Machina means "God in the Machine" not "Hand of God".
- An FBI badge can't get you past airport security?
- Although it pains me to criticize Anna, her performance as Altlivia was way too over the top.
Other than that, awesome episode.
Great seeing Walter interact differently with Asptrid! Including getting her name correct on second try, and yet he manages to get Astrid's name wrong everytime! XD
ReplyDeleteI would think Peter would want to work with Astrid honestly...
Loved that we finally got some background info on the Astrids.
ReplyDeleteJasika Nicole proved tonight what has already been known for awhile, that every member of the Fringe cast are brilliant. Making Angels was one of those episodes where you can laugh and cry and have all sorts of different emotions all for the same reason.
ReplyDeleteLoved it!
ReplyDeleteI'm confused though.
ReplyDeleteAbout TSA, who knows. Really securitys wacky
The producers mentioned in an interview that Astrid/ and altastrid are the acception to the doubles, where there difference isn't as much and only how they were raised but chromosomal as well. They will probs elaborate. idk.
I've usually heard "God FROM the Machine" as its translation..... but,
ReplyDelete"Although this phrase is somewhat diluted in transliteration as earlier in history, the phrase "god from the machine" implies the old use of mechanical manipulation, i.e. to be made with one's hands.
ReplyDeleteThe only bad thing about the episode was that Fauxliva was in it. She's a waste of screen time.
ReplyDeleteHas Altlivia always been this annoying? I haven't found her swagger and 'tude overly obnoxious in the past, but she was bugging the shit out of me in this episode.
ReplyDeleteAm I crazy or did Altliv's line "It turns out I like the nice guys" make anyone else think she might be with Lincoln now? She broke up with Frank last we saw her. Maybe the show is just pushing the whole Peter vs. Lincoln issue so hard that I'm seeing things. I think that could explain why she was obnoxiously playful in this episode.
ReplyDeleteMe too. I always thought the kept her locked up in the broom closet when they didn't need her. :-P
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to see she has a loved one, and a place to go home to at the end of the day.
It was in the Orpheus theater, and I'm guessing he didn't die but only pulled the ole disappearing bald guy trick.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen/read The Time Traveller's Wife? I think September is doing the same thing. Time isn't linear to the Observers. Why should death be at the end of a series of events?
ReplyDeleteAnother awesome ep featuring Jasika who really brought the goods tonight.
ReplyDeleteshe is simply pathetic!!
ReplyDeleteZOMG! I guess I am only one who actually liked Alt-Livie and her way... of inter-action with Walter ^^;!
ReplyDelete*LOL*
♥
I did too. I thought it was brilliant. I'm kinda confused as to why people didn't like it. This was one episode that might be in my top 5 of the entire series for me. So many clues were left about upcoming stuff and I LOVED how Walter interacted with Alt-Liv. I wish we could see more of it!
ReplyDeleteI definitely liked the interaction with everyone and their doubles, and AltAstrid with Walter was some damn fine stuff. Also like Olivia warming up to Peter more, and Altlivia trying to make amends since she's not that bad.
ReplyDeleteAnd go September!
ReplyDeleteAnd I gotta say, I'm really confused by the Alt-Livia hate.
Yeah I don't get it either. Faux is my kinda chick. I love her.
ReplyDeleteDisagree.
ReplyDeleteI usually love Alt-Livia, but she was pretty damn annoying tonight.
ReplyDeleteI loved the interactions between the two Astrids. MORE PLEASE!
I have an autistic daughter and when altastrid was talking about her fathers love, and being different and normal. i had chills and tears in my eyes. I love this show.
ReplyDeletei was kind of offended. i wanted to yell that peter is a nice guy. she was kind of offputting after that,
ReplyDeleteThis was NOT an astrid centric episode, it had a lot of astrid to be sure but she didnt drive the story therefore it wasnt "astrid centric" while a great episode and jasika nicole FINALLY got the screentime she deserved (and she was fantastic) it was a COTW with a lot of astrid on the side, 73 episodes in and episodes wasting on the *shudder* soul magnets, and not even one episode focused entirely on astrid!? ugh, lincoln has more screentime than any of nina, broyles and astrid put together this season its horrible, the one scene he was in this episode was bad and cringeworthy just because he was in it!
ReplyDeleteReally liked episode overall, especially scenes with both Astrids and Walter/Altlivia. Maybe plot itself wasn't that good. But all the Observers stuff is amaizing!
ReplyDeleteI do not like the actor who played the Observer tonight. He just rubbed me the wrong way.
ReplyDeleteCan someone help me out...when, in this timeline, did Alt-Olivia come over to this side and betray Walter?
I'm thinking that since there was no Peter to seduce, she was sent to bond with Walter to get the pieces of the machine.
ReplyDeleteAnd here's where this whole Peter never existed tweak causes me brain issues.
ReplyDeleteI've been convinced, since the season started, that she's still with Frank.
I'm confused. :-)
It is actually "God from the Machine" as Darque said, and it means basically something that doesn't follows the laws of causality and just appears out of nothing to "force" an event. Hand of God is a pretty nifty way to put it, since "God from the Machine" Is too much of a literal translation of the latin.
ReplyDeleteAnd I think that they were trying to show that TSA have that kind of power? Was it a PSA??
I did think that Altlivia was specially chirpy, but It made me wonder that it was suposed to be a reflection of the relationship she shared with Walter. I'm thinking something along the lines of "daughter substitute"
And I don't think they will open that bag of cats, since we still don't know what actually causes autism. Still, it does seems to be inclined to be cause by a external cause in the Fringe universe.
No you're not. I thought she was being deliciously evil...annoying people who don't like you by being really really nice and cheerful.
ReplyDeleteThis episode became a personal favorite. A lot of little moments and interactions, an interesting CotW, but the Astrid's win the price.
ReplyDeleteIt was just heartbreaking to see AltAstrid trying to cope.
ReplyDeleteIt went probably went down differently, but I think we can assume Fauxlivia stil impersonated Olivia and Walter felt betrayed when he found out.
ReplyDeletekewl. thanks!
Probably her mission was just about to seize the opportunity just as in the original timeline, and the best way to succeed was to befriend Walter.
ReplyDeleteBut then it gots me thinking how did they even get to the parallel universe if Olivia doesn't knows how to fly between? There's a lot of questions about the Peterasing!
Walter: "..Astrid and I..."
ReplyDeleteAstrid: "REALLY?!"
I can see why some people might think Fauxlivia was over-the-top in this episode... and she was. She did it on purpose to mess with Walter. XD
ReplyDeleteJust adding my $0.02 worth of trivia to the discussion. The term 'Deus Ex Machina' originates in ancient Greek theater. It describes a sudden appearance of a God to change the outcome of a situation, and the God 'floated' in from the sky with the help of a sort of stage crane - hence the 'machine'.
ReplyDeleteAs for autism, I recently read about identical twins who both have autism but completely different sets of behavior.
ReplyDeleteAnd I don't get either how December could be unaware of what September has done - or didn't do.
ReplyDeleteI thought I recalled that being said, but couldn't be sure. I guess we still don't need the details, but that was not the point of revealing that information. It was done more to let us know that events we had seen happen did in fact happen in this timeline, but they happened in slightly different manners.
ReplyDeleteAll of the awards for Jasika, she was simply wonderful in this episode. I loved how we got an Astrid episode that was about character moments rather than the obvious route of Astrid saving the team or something.
ReplyDeleteI think its so lovely how the two teams are slowly working together, having Alt!Liv along for the ride was so much fune
ReplyDeleteI can see the producers are trying to answer slowly the questions about the observers, which is good, but I don't believe they can handle it. they sank too deep with the questions they opened about them, some things contradicts with other things we know about the observers, like... they catched bullets and their hand didn't had any scratch, but he was shot? and those people, who make no mistakes and know everything, now they lose weapons? if the series goes down without closing the observers story, I will be disappointed.
She's always awful, but she was more annoying than usual this time.
ReplyDeleteI'd forgotten about the hired hitman.
ReplyDeleteAH! I had DVR issues and lost a bunch of stuff I was saving. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI really like where that goes!
ReplyDeleteThe device was the "Time-Flattener" so it allowed Neil to be witnin time (Past, present and future).... and it also allowed him to be a savior to these people he knew would die painfully or slowly.
XD
4x11 "Making Angels"
ReplyDeleteI found the episode really intriguing!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. -And also one could interpret it that man is God's will --so anything man makes is divine. (tools-technology-machines, shapeshifters, Observers, multiple timelines = apotheosis)
ReplyDelete"God helps those that help themselves." - Astrid (The Day We Died)
haven't read it yet. It's on my long list of things to read.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you have ever read any of the comics in "The Tales of the Fringe" comics, but really liked the one about how Astrid became an FBI agent!
ReplyDeletehttp://fringepedia.net/wiki/Fringe_Comic_Number_9
I think it's up for debate, because August seems to be dead. He has never reappeared and it seems that his death is the cost of Christine Hollis' future...So perhaps they can only die if they sacrifice themselves for someone, but also perhaps it relies on being killed by certain technology, since August was killed with a crazy sonic-flash gun and not by a gun with bullets....
ReplyDeleteI agree with you guys too!!!. --She was so comical. I really enjoyed seeing her be obnoxious! XD
ReplyDeleteThanks. It's hard to keep all these details in mind what with these l-o-o--o-ng hiatuses. And now another one coming.
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful to see the team slowly coming together again.
ReplyDeleteI loved the interaction between two Astrids and all Walter / AltLiv scenes
ReplyDeleteActually, Deus ex Machina has everything to do (regardless of what were later uses) with literary devices. Thus 'Hand of God' as long as it is God's hand, not someone acting in God's stead as his hand, is an appropriate translation (though in this ep, the meaning was latter, not the former)
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, and Deus in Machina would be 'God in the Machine'
She was very annoying. I hate to say this because I love Anna, but she went too far this time, Altlivia was very overacted.
ReplyDeleteIt was about time they addressed September's choice not to erase Peter! September is going his own way now and making his own decissions disregarding the "chain of command" and that must have some kind of (negative) effect on the other Observers. I wonder what his motivations are and I hope we delve into that storyline more in the upcoming episodes.
ReplyDeleteI have to say I didn't love this episode. I thought Jasika was amazing, her portrayal of Alt-Astrid has been sublime since the beginning and in this episode she was specially moving. I'm glad she got to do this!
ReplyDeleteI was happy to see that September's decission not to erase Peter is finally being adressed and I'm guessing (and hoping) that that's leading to more presence of tht Observers in upcoming episodes.
However, the COTW didn't quite get to me, neither the case itself nor its investigation. I found myself not caring about anything else appart from the Astrids in this episode. So I enjoyed their interactions very much, but for the most part the episode was OK.
amazing episode!!! i loved it and as much as i wanted to hate fauxlivia she was very funny in this ep!
ReplyDeleteI noticed the eye contact thing too! Maybe they decided to shape her character from more severely Autistic or having a severe case of Asperger's to something less socially awkward and more able to connect?
ReplyDeletePeter arriving seems to have changed everyone else to some degree, maybe his arrival in this timeline affected Asptrid too?
I caught that line! I thought that it would mean he was alive too, but then I reconsidered somewhat.... If December and the rest of the months were not aware September did not eradicate the Peter-shaped anomele, perhaps they do not know September has been shot or is dead?
ReplyDeleteI guess the thing about being everywhere at once and capable of knowing anything in an instant is that they have to actually be considering the relevant events.
ReplyDeleteI've been wondering about that.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I understand so far this season, Altliv still switched with Olivia in order to retrieve pieces of the machine. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think she meant it that way, I think she was just teasing that Peter has that bad boy, I don't follow the rules sort of appeal.
ReplyDeleteITA! It was really great back story on her character and how she 'does' and 'knows' the things that she does. I also loved Olivia's tale too!
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly I still have like 15ish other shows I watch, but Fringe is definitely in the Top 5, if not Top 3, of my favorite current TV shows on air right now. It is definitely my favorite supernatural drama.
ReplyDeleteAs for the Altlivia hate, I think some people were in the same boat as Walter where they still resented Altliv for coming over here and being a spy for the other side. Back when we thought her character was evil. I personally kind of like Altlivia now, but I know I was against her back in the 1st half of Season 3. Hopefully we'll see her mesh better with our universe, cause I'd love to see some Olivia + Altlivia smack down against some baddies.
Haha, I've never heard of her referred to as Asptrid before. Funny.
ReplyDeleteI started calling her that after her first episode since I assumed she had Asperger's Syndrome, but it never really caught on. Even after Jasika revealed the alternate version did have Asperger's.. The odd thing is I tried to come up with a name that first episode and I never thought of Altstrid! XD
ReplyDeleteAltsrid seems so obvious now... I still like Asptrid though!
No matter what we call her, she certainly is fun!
Ah, good point!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Observers tend to say things in way that doesn't make sense to us.
ReplyDeleteObservers only seem to kill people, when they don't die the way they think they should...August exchanged his life so that C. Hollis could have a future....
Boy is September screwed?!
ReplyDeleteThis episode was amazing! Both Astrid were really great.
ReplyDeleteI loved this episode. The two Astrids were great and it was nice knowing a little more about them.
ReplyDeleteDidn't mind Fauxlivia either.
ReplyDeleteBest part of the episode was when Astrid walks in to the lab and sees Altstrid and screams. Olivia says "I've always wondered why nobody does that." LMAO
ReplyDeleteAll I could think was "I know, RIGHT?!"
after watching it, i didn't think she was too "overacted" either
ReplyDeleteI just loved this episode.
ReplyDeleteThis episode was awesome. Astrid lie to the Alt Astrid to protect her, so sweet.
ReplyDeleteFantastic episode.
ReplyDelete- Altlivia has to be hiding some serious emotional stuff behind all that smiling and attitude.
ReplyDeleteWhat I enjoyed so much was how Astrid reacted to Alt-Astrid, totally different from the other characters. Yes, she was first shocked but then immediately took he hand and greeted her. Every other character always was some kind of suspicious and anti towards their alternate version so this was a nice change. And I loved Jasika, she did a great job and almost made me cry.
