The Office - James Spader Won't Return for More

27 Feb 2012

James Spader is leaving "The Office" early.
The network confirmed the Emmy-winning actor isn't going to return for a ninth season of the NBC series, a decision made at the actor's behest.

"James always wanted this to be a one-year arc, and he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television," said "Office" executive producer Paul Lieberstein. "He's been a great friend to me and the show, helping us successfully transition into the post-Michael Scott years, and I'm grateful for that."

  1. Oh. The show's future is looking bleaker by the minute.

  2. Outside of his interactions with Jim, Robert California is a LAME character.

I like Spader, but I'm not sad to lose his character.

  3. It'll end up as just Pam, on her own, in The Office, deserted, everyone's bloody leaving! Time to end the show methinks!

  4. That was a giant waste, then.

  5. Robert California was a terrible character because they never really flushed him out. Essentially he was an empty caricature. I love Spader and am sad to see him leave the screen on any show, but the office is pretty much dead now.

  6. I really like what the writers  did with the Robert California character during the interviews last season, but with but a few exceptions this season, they haven't been anywhere close to what they could've done with that character. With Andy as the branch manager, I don't think that the character is really needed since he's not constantly around. I hope that they aren't looking at Catherine Tate to fill the role, as I haven't been that impressed with her character so far. Perhaps they might be looking at her to fill the void once Dwigt leaves.... I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

  8. I didn't mind Robert in small doses but that is about all, a 9th season? Gah can we at least decide to make it the last and give the remaining characters some kind of dignified exit?

  9. Wow.. maybe we're nearing the show's swan song.  It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to wrap things up with a final season... and hopefully no spin-off at the beet farm.
