Thanks to Nuno for the heads up.

We were always bullish on this one. Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal project just got a direct-to-series order. NBC has picked up 13 episodes of the thriller TV series based on Thomas Harris’ classic cannibal serial killer.
Logline: “One-hour contemporary thriller series featuring the classic characters from Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon – FBI agent Will Graham and his mentor Dr. Hannibal Lecter – who are re-introduced at the beginning of their budding relationship.”
So that includes some new information. Fuller is focusing on damaged FBI profiler Graham instead of Clarice Starling (popularized by Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs). Graham is the agent who captured Lecter when the psychiatrist was on his killing/eating spree.

This lives or dies with its casting.... Until I see who the leads are I have no interest frankly.
ReplyDeleteWill ahve to wait and see about this one. On the face of it, it could be interesting, but I agree it really does depend on some very strong casting.
ReplyDeleteI think the leads will be great, since Bryan Fuller is in charge. That man knows his coconuts. He`s one of the reasons that Heroes once was something, before Kring destoryed it all.
ReplyDeleteYou might be right about the casting, you are right about Heroes....
ReplyDeleteI'm not looking forward to this one at all yet, but by the time it rolls out it could be at the top of my list. Serial killers, dark and moody, man hunts, and most likely a strong overarching story if not a full-on serialized format.
I'm not sure why I'm not excited for this honestly, but it could turn once more info is out...
Hmmmm....I always liked the Hannibal books and I think Silence of the Lambs is a great movie, but I´m a little scared that a series might ruin it all. Like some of you already said - it all comes down to the casting.
ReplyDeleteI'm always against making heroes out of savage criminals an serial killers.
ReplyDeleteDexter is already around for fans of the genre.
If it does get made, I hope it gets zero ratings.
I wonder how long this has been sitting on the shelf, waiting to be picked up..This doesn't sound very interesting,at least right now....maybe as more info comes in.
ReplyDeleteThomas Harris' books and 'The Silence of Lambs' have always been particularly special to me. I think it's very hard to realize the material properly, even if it is drawing from 'Red Dragon.' I'm sort of reluctant to see this, but I could be proven wrong as I've enjoyed various fictional re-imaginings before. It just feels like Lecter's universe is being bled dry, and poorly at that. I think, like others, I will wait for casting news before I go one way or the other with it.
ReplyDeleteIt still seems odd that Fuller would be involved with something this dark but it does keeps me intrigued. Sadly though the way that shows like The Firm and Prime Suspect has been received on the channel I don't think taking a well known name is necessarily going to be a ratings hit.
ReplyDeleteNot very excited but it could be good... it depends 100% on execution I guess.
ReplyDeleteNot really sure what to think about this one... I am excited that NBC seems to still be looking outside the box, as this could have a Dexter-ish type appeal to it, and that B. Fuller is attached to it, but feel that it might also be too much in a niche that it might not be a ratings blowout that NBC is looking for. Execution will be the key.
ReplyDeleteI disagree. This will be too watered down for broadcast TV to work well, no matter who they cast. NBC basically has to pull off a PG-13 thriller to get this to work and I certainly don't trust this network to accomplish that.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree about the watered-down part. Many shows on network TV are watered down and still have a lot of viewers. If people like the actors and the characters they portray they keep watching anyway. Most of network TV is about the characters more than the story in my mind. I don't think it can be the movie Hannibal (or Silence of the Lambs), but I think it could be a less graphic serial killer manhunt series.
ReplyDeleteThat said though I agree about NBC. I don't trust them to do any type of show justice. I think at this point their desperation is actually hindering their ability to create quality series. They need a hit so badly they seem to be trying to swing for home runs instead of just trying to get on base and build a quality, solid show.
Yep, I agree that this will be way too watered down. I think that it would have been fine on a cable TV network like Showtime, but NBC won't have the guts to push the envelope on the gore and horror factor (and by horror I mean dealing with the subject matter of Hannibal Lector). They'll play it safe; thereby, losing at least a moderate portion of the people interested who tuned in because of the books or movies.
ReplyDeleteMuch as I loved 'Red Dragon'/'Manhunter' and love Will Graham... This all depends on who they cast as Lecter. Will Graham any number of actors can do him justice, but not Lecter. I've always been curious about the early cases the two worked together, I guess this is what they mean when they say 'be careful what you wish for'. I'm really worried this is going to fail big time.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if anyone would have guts to call Anthony Hopkins and offer him this role?
