Grey's Anatomy - Episode 8.14 - All You Need Is Love - Review

22 Feb 2012

Smell those roses folks, it’s valentine’s day over at SGMW! Life has returned to normal after the diversion into Meredith’s dreams and I’m more than a little bit pleased with that. At episode 8.14 we are more than half way through the season and, without knowing whether they’ll be a season 9 or if the old-timers of the cast will stay Shonda chose Valentine’s Day to renew our vows. She reminded us of the true ‘made for each other’ loves, the trouble in paradise and the yearning. I guess this was a cannily timed episode. Last week we were treated to what could have been, the lost loves, the if-only. This week we’re reassured, and at the same time punched in the gut.

“All You Need Is Love” proved to be enjoyable, funny and thoroughly charming.  Light on storyline, heavy on romance this filler episode warmed the heart on a cold night (go with me, it was cold here in the UK!).
"Oh Derek. You're embarrassing the duckies"

Grey’s is about sex and scalpels – or at least it used to be. This week we were treated to the sex bit. Or at least two couples trying to get some, whilst juggling new parenthood responsibilities. But whilst happy in love Derek is chasing happy in love Meredith around the duckies Meredith herself is moving forward in general surgery and rocking it. Her relationship with Bailey is completely restored and she’s proving to all that she’s an extremely competent surgeon. Let’s compare her to Avery. Zzzzzz. Sorry I dozed off there. I’m not in the mood to talk about Avery and that rather weird freaky threesome Valentine’s dinner he was cooking, so I’ll leave it to Arizona to say it for me with just one look...
Yes Arizona, I feel exactly the same way about Avery.

If you’re a fan of Callie and Arizona then you were treated to a Valentine’s day delight. Whilst I’ve read that many were upset at the early zoom out on their romantic trailer scene (there is really nothing romantic about typing ‘romantic trailer scene’), I was far more interested in the little story Shonda wove for us about these two love birds. This mini story arc, which, incidentally was probably the only real story telling in the episode, was a little love letter to the fans, more so than any other pronounced 'love letter' episode. Blink, and you would probably have missed the significance of all of their scenes either together or Arizona’s with Mark. What did we complain about in Season 7 – that Callie was not emotionally in their relationship, far from respecting Arizona as her girlfriend she was continually drawn to Mark as a pseudo-partner; that Mark was not only IN their relationship but at one point aggressive and nasty towards Arizona as a parent; that Arizona and Mark hate each other. In All You Need Is Love it feels like Shonda is drawing a line underneath this trio and has finally pulled them apart. Callie, romantic and loving is in charge of Valentine’s Day and proves, to a deeply suspicious Arizona, that she does in fact know her wife well, loves her, and by the way, desperately wants in her pants. She also proved that she is no longer running to Mark as a BFF. In fact Mark was casually oblivious to Callie’s romantic plans even dismissive of them in favour of his own needs. Arizona and Mark continued to illustrate that they talk to each other not only as co-parents but also as friends. The irony being that in this episode she actually goes to Mark for evidence of Callie’s amorous plans. We watched and listened as Mark treated us to a speech at Arizona on shared and equal parenting...who’d a thought! And finally we’ve been reminded that Lexie and Mark had a thing...and still have a thing. I will venture a guess that ‘Calsloana’ is finally over.
*Fake smile* Callie: "Try not to think about the fact that Alex was the last person to sleep on that bed"
*Through gritted teeth* Arizona: "I'm trying. I'm really trying"

But where romance was tangible in the trailer for the unfortunate Cristina and Owen a void full of pain has opened up between them. The only sign of hope being the chivalrous dive by Owen to save Cristina from the flowers. A symbolic reflection on the state of their marriage – metaphoric car crash. Where can this couple go? In a rare moment of sympathy I did feel sorry for Owen for about 30 seconds when Teddy was shouting at him. I actually don’t understand (yet) where the writers are taking this story. It’s really not obvious but I am suspicious of Teddy’s outburst, especially regarding soldiers who have died. That was mean and has to be grief talking. Lovely, heartbreaking elevator scene though; someone should write a book about that elevator.
"I can't do this anymore. No more air vent sex"

There were plenty of metaphors to be found with the patients this week, loaded with messages, but the stories weren’t strong. Lexie is left pondering on speaking up about her feelings, Meredith is rather ironically sterilising a woman who is her husband’s better half, Cristina and Teddy are fixing the car crash knowing they can’t fix their own. And Alex is reading love letters to a ten year old, perhaps reflecting on the simplicity of love when his life hasn’t seen any in a while (too deep?). As usual we were witness to the unresolved sexual tension between him and April. Am I seeing sexual tension? Or do I just WANT to see it? Whether I am or not it’s just lovely to see Alex rocking it as a doctor.

As romantic and tugging at the heart strings as this episode was, it was not without it’s flaws. The sequencing of scenes towards the end was poor and illogical and was disruptive to my viewing.

·      Avery shows up at Mark’s to cook. (I’m in love with Daddy Mark, just thought I’d add that)
·      Callie and Arizona arrive in the woods.
·      Meredith and Derek are back at the hospital having HAD dinner
·      Bailey is late
·      Lexie is talking to herself as Meredith and Derek walk in – Zola is not in bed yet
·      Bailey is late with Ben and it’s 11.23pm
·      Lexie shows up for a play date and Jackson is still cooking dinner – seriously how long does it take to cook steak? Sofia’s is still up.

Is it me, or does that timeline look a little screwy.

Let’s finish in a happy place as Miranda celebrates with dinner in the hospital, courtesy of a very romantic Ben. I’m softening a little to him. He’s proving to Bailey that he knows her, and knows that to get to her heart you need to get to the one that lives in the hospital. How lovely to see Bailey winning at surgery and winning at romance.
Huh! Ben! You've finally realised that I live at the hospital!

All You Need Is Love romanced me and was the perfect antidote to the forgettable If/Then.

The highlights:
Best line - “I’m not hitting much of anything” – Lexie and the Chief (the real, one and only chief), always a good combination.
Best scene - Welcome back Steve The Intern!
Best romantic moment – Mark’s face when he sees Lexie turn up at his door
"Lexie, I've got something to tell you. Avery and I, it's um, a thing. You know. I think they call it a bromance. There's no room for you in this relationship"

And seriously...can Zola get any cuter!

Apologies for the time lag in reviews. I got a new job in December, and new jobs, despite being great like this one, always suck your mental energy. I'm loving it though. Hopefully will catch up soon. Thanks for your patience.

  1. i was on a chat room and everyone is obsessed with Calzona, they were enraged when they only got two seconds out lol
That was a weird scene of the 3some Mark, Avery and Lexie *picks Lexie face off the ground*
I loved the Ben/Bailey story how adorable was he to make dinner come to Bailey "he knows her"
Arizona was hilarious tryna figure out what Callie was up to.  Her facial expressions were killer this episode she made the episode.
Callie was too cute the first scene u should bring boots, long underwear and an extra fleece, she knew it would piss Arizona off and have her go crazy.  It worked like a charm.
I enjoyed this episode so CUTE!!!

  2. Oh boy Brouhaha you are experiencing a horrible winter! Indeed it is cold, and snowy there,i feel for you...Now back to your review...

I have to say right off the bat that although it was a nice Valentine episode i wasn't thrilled with it..i think i am getting played out to the show to be honest.I'm tried of hearing about Arizona and Callie not having enough air time when it comes to there romance..I don't think there will ever be the day when we see more, and really if one doesn't have enough imagination...

  3. I'm hoping that this Mark Avery Lexie thing was a one episode gimmick and ends here.

  4. I really pay no attention to character screen time. The story is far more important to me. Saying that though all the ships have their dig at screen time especially MerDer and Calzona fans so I think it evens out really. No one is ever happy. Not Mark/Lexie fans, not Cristina/Owen fans. I try to ignore it all.

I didn't really worry about the Calzona zoom out that got people worked up. Over all it was such a sweet scene but I thought the story around it was far more interesting and conclusive. And overall reassuring. This story has moved on.
    Thanks for your comments!

  5. Well we all know rumor has it Mark and Lexie wont be an item anytime soon.  But they might toy with ppl as they did in this episode.

  6.  I find that these ppl who have an issue with romantic screen time specifically Calzona dont realize that 1. Grey's is on ABC a network television station and 2. its based in the U.S. in this country we argue about same sex marriage, u have to be crazy to believe they will show a full on sex scene between two ppl of the same sex.  If they want that, they should tune into HBO, Showtime, etc they show all that and more.  Or maybe these fools should just watch porn cus they sound like a bunch of horn dogs in my humble opinion lol

  7.  HA! Horn dogs,good one Spartigus15!  :)

    And i agree!

  8. I think the outraged stemmed more from the fact that this was a very over hyped episode in regards to Callie & Arizona (and yes, I do believe that it was over hyped with some added fan over speculation. Because all the PR around that time were really about the AU episode or Callie's valentine surprise for Arizona). But after the dust had settled the Calzona fandom calmed down and saw it for what it for what it really was: Callie & Mark don't really communicate with each other anymore, (I don't even think that they have had a single scene together without Arizona this season (?) and even their scenes together seem to be drastically reduced compared to other seasons..so far) Callie really knows her wife and her priorities and finally, Callie & Arizona really do have sexual chemistry together. I will say, that last scene with C/A was the most sensual I have ever seen those two. EVER. But it was also weird because it did seem overly edited, more than usual. And it's not just with them either, I think the show has been a lot more tame in regards to any love scene this season. I also saw the MerDer fans getting upset because MerDer didn't really have a love scene.

  9. idk if the Calzona fans felt that instantly maybe a few days later they settled down but instantly they were pissed.

  10. It seemed like I was watching two very different episodes. One minute we get this very lovey dovey atmosphere and the next minute we have Cristina almost getting hit by a van.
Meredith & Derek not having a place to have sex was kind of weird. Didn't April, Jackson and Alex just move out? Even if they didn't, why would Derek loan out is "relationship trailer of DOOM" to Callie if he himself needed a love shack? I did however love the throwbacks to season one. To me that car scene was almost perfection, all it need was Bailey knocking on the window door.           Cristina and Owen are soooo over. And I really did like them together. I realistically don't see how they can be mended. (Unless, Owen becomes a sperm donor spreading his seed for miles and miles. Maybe that will help heal Owen's aching womb.lol). And again I loved their throw backs as well with the vent.          Have Mark & Lexie become the new Alex & Izzie? How long are going to wait until they get back together?          I LOVED Callie & Arizona in this episode. As for Callie's surprise I was hoping it was anything but that trailer, but I think that they actually pulled it off. I think that this was mention here before, but I'm starting to really believe that there really is a check list in regards to Calzona since 8th season began and this episode especially made obvious for me.☑ Arizona holding Sofia ☑ Accessories (necklaces & rings)☑ Callie setting boundaries with Mark☑ Arizona's legalities with Sophia☑ Acknowledgement that they do have a sex life ☑ Acknowledgement that Mark was indeed butting into their relationship☑ Very little Mark/Callie interaction☑ Their morning routine ☑ Callie showing affection and doing something special for Arizona☑ The closest thing to a love scene they've ever had

  11. loved having the vent scene back but not a happy valentines for owen n cristina :(  love ben n bailey together, alex reading the letter was cute!!! i hope kepner n karev dont hook up.

  12. I'm absolutely in love with Ben, more so after this episode than I was before - it was sweet that he had planned ahead, and that he knew Bailey enough to make a (LATE) romantic dinner in the hospital their plans in the first place.  He understands her love for her job, and isn't trying to change her, and doesn't get angry about it - he just adapts.  So sweet!

And I'm with you - Webber is the only Chief I'll ever acknowledge, Derek and Owen be damned.

  13. agree with you about Cristina and Owen. I can't see that relationship being recoverable. I suppose they have to keep all couples in different states of emotion hence we get drawn out Mark and Lexie.
I've no problem if it is a checklist for Callie and Arizona. I do think this is the end of all the crap!

  14. oh I do. April and Alex. Great couple. hee hee!

  15. Well I have to say if Shonda asked Debbie Allen to come back permanently and play Dr Catherine Avery, Chief of Surgery. I might be open to someone other than Webber being chief. She would be an epic chief.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I can't argue with that!

  17. i think i like april with jackson better!

  18. And I would just like Jackson to leave. I'm happy to open the door for him

  19. Happy to find my fav review and reviewer and in love with this episode. Your deep (never too deep! I adore Grey's for its symbolic reflections and meanings) review is just perfect.
In love with Callie and Arizona little arc both amazing I really really enjoy the whole thing a lot even if I was one of those people just asking for some more seconds (maybe cutting some Avery misery time, still useless and senseless character, sorry I can't help bitching on Avery) and less zoom out but I love love love it any less absolutely amazing.

Still don't like Ben, I need more to be convinced maybe is childish but it is what I feel.

I felt so sorry for Cristina. They just have to break up.
