First Cut - SpoilerTV CW pilot script preview - the next guilty pleasure?

13 Feb 2012

First Cut:

The show is basically a high school drama set in a hospital, do not expect a medical drama. The protagonist Emily goes for an internship at a hospital only to find that most of her colleagues are her former colleagues from high school and medical school including her worst enemy Cascandra the mean girl from high school. Emily is an awkward geek and was hoping to leave high school behind her.

First Cut has a pretty ridiculous premise but it embraces it and makes fun of its own highschoolness the show is light and funny and at times heartfelt and emotional.
The show also doesn't rush with any relationships, there are no major hookups in the pilot instead only subtle hints of coming relationships.

Overall, I liked the script better than i thought i would.

Success chances: Great- with Gossip Girl and 90210 aging and Hart of Dixie likely cancelled, i think First Cut is a perfect fit for the CW.

  1. I just can't comprehend the worst parts of medical dramas combined with the worst part of high school dramas.... YIKES!

Thankfully this sounds like it may not be as horrific as that, but I still don't expect to be checking this one out....

  4. I'll be really frustrated if they cancel HoD for this. It sounds stupid.

  5. How can this be GOOD??? Seriously a teen drama in a  hospital is better than Selection and Joey Dakota? And has more chances of success?
I hope Pedowitz is smart enough to understand that teen drama, boring show about teen angst is hated by audience and in fact Hart of dixie 90210 and Gossip girl are barely watched!
This will be the new Hellcats

  6. i didnt say it was better than them just more standard CW and it was quite fun for what it was and is more of a "safe" pickup choice
The Selection is a big gamble it could end up being either the best or the worstJoey Dakota was a pretty boring read and slow movingbut keep in mind i only read scripts some things get better/changed when filmed

  7. The only thing worse than a high school drama right now is an adult drama where the people can't get over high school.  Combine that with my usual distaste for all medical dramas and this one goes to the bottom of my potential viewing list.

  9. CW always manages to make me laugh at the premises of their shows. Each year there are pilot projects that sound absolutely ridiculous, I love it!

  10. I read the previous review posted here and the script was absolutely ripped to shreds. Its high school in a hospital and I think Greys already has that market cornered. If the CW want to turn things around this is not a show they should be picking up. Its got immature, stupid, Greys rip off and failure written all over it.

  11. They should have Weird Al's "Like A Surgeon" as the theme song.

  12. I haven't read the script but from the sound of this, I'd still much rather have Hart of Dixie.  Hart of Dixie is adorable, and I love quirky small towns.

  13. I hate when in shows grown ups act like teenagers just as much as I hate it when teenagers act like grown ups, so I have a very strong feeling this will not work for me at all. (I have a hard time with Grey's more often than not. Imagine what a poor mans Grey's Anatomy would do for me)
Having said that I firmly believe in execution so I'lll definitelly give a sampling before I make a final call.

  14. I agree. I'd far rather just renew HoD than watch a bunch of mid to late twenty-somethings act like Jr High/Middle age "kids". bleech.

  15. I think this sounds like it has some potential. After all, look at the success of Grey's Anatomy and the premise wasn't that far off from this. Has anyone been cast yet?
