The Walking Dead - Interview with Steven Yeun

How far advanced to you get your script?
“As far as auditioning you typically don’t get it too far in advance. I think I got mine maybe … two days before, and that could be a good thing. Sometimes you get it the day before,or the day of. Luckily, I got it like two days before, and I just prepared for it (the audition). The stars aligned, I suppose.”

Right before you walked out of there, did you think that you were Glenn? That you had gotten the job?
“What had happened was that right before I had another audition for an ABC pilot. That was my first. I had just moved to Los Angeles like 5 months prior, and that was my first pilot season. I had auditioned for this ABC pilot, tested for it, and it was down between me and this other guy. Apparently they liked the other guy better, because I had gotten the bad news that I didn’t get it. That kind of helped me in a way, because I wasn’t as nervous about The Walking Dead audition. It kind of normalized things, and not necessarily not made it a big deal, but you just kind of take things in stride that sometimes you’re just not going to get every thing that you want. *laughs* So when I went into the audition I was typically more relaxed than I otherwise would be, and I think that definitely helped me a lot”

After guest starring on other shows like The Big Bang Theory and Law & Order, how does it feel to be a main character on such a popular show?
“Oh, man, sometimes it can be tough, because sometimes you’re there just for that one episode, and come into a tight-knit cast that has their particular way of talking to one another. You just kind of show up as a stranger, and are expected to go with it. It can be intimidating. As for working on The Walking Dead, it’s just like a giant family. You walk in every day, and everyone is just so happy to see each other.”

  1. I don't remember him on TBBT! I have to see what episode he was in.

  2. I wonder what ABC pilot he auditioned for.
