Thanks to Sylvia for the heads up.
Look, we know this Q&A with Supernatural star Jared Padalecki is long. We know attention spans are short these days. But when you have a chance to sit down with such a beloved actor on such a creative show, you can't cut his words short when he has so much to share about grieving a father figure's death, working with favorite returning guest stars, driving down the "crazy" road for his character, and of course, the possibility of love and/or shirtless scenes to come on-screen. So all we will say is enjoy the Supernatural scoop!
LA TV Insider Examiner: We don’t want to harp on Bobby’s death, but we do need to bring it up for a minute. It seemed like Sam was much more okay with his death than we expected. Do you see that as maybe a little bit of Soulless Sam creeping back in, as the wall is destroyed, or does he just have to be the stronger brother right now?
Jared Padalecki: For me, I feel like Sam being okay-ish with it is not that it’s Soulless Sam creeping back in, but that Sam has so much on his plate with the hallucinations and with Lucifer coming in and out of his vision that he’s having a difficult time staying on solid ground, let alone being able to focus on his emotions. It’s almost as if you have a bad, bad injury, you don’t think about how tired you are, you just think about that injury. So he’s just thinking about that injury, so to speak…It’s not that he doesn’t miss Bobby, it’s that he thinks his brother has been drinking too much, and he has something that’s huge on his plate that he doesn’t want to take over. He’s putting on a brave face right now, but he’s pretty messed up.
How much will Sam have to step in and kind of take care of his brother, in the next few episodes, instead of the other way around, as it's always been?
J.P.: That happens quite a bit from here on out. Sam finds himself in a situation where Dean’s always been the sturdy, gruff guy, not really paying attention to his emotion. But now Sam, by virtue of he can’t pay attention to his emotion anymore, is having to go be the strong guy and ‘Hey, this is the way things need to get done.’ He doesn’t have time to think of everything else.

ReplyDeleteThanks for this!!
ReplyDeleteWorks fine here. What error do you get?
ReplyDeleteThanks :D
ReplyDeleteI have trouble opening those links too. Blank box opens up. I've found right clicking and opening it in a new tab works. Andy, I'm using Firefox if that helps.
ReplyDeleteThanks:)
ReplyDeleteThis is the best interview yet. I'm excited now for ep. 15, or is it 14? As much as I miss Cas, and I'm sure I'll come to miss Bobby too, I'm glad they're serious about removing the props that make the job too easy for Sam and Dean.
ReplyDelete14 is the clowns and 15 is the return of Lucifer
ReplyDeletenever mind I googled the interview and read it elsewhere, but thanks any way
ReplyDeleteawesome interview. thanks for posting :D
ReplyDeleteIn a way the lack of Sam's story so far this season has really worked in that there hasnt been an oversaturration of it. The way Jared explains it makes sense and helps build the excitement and anticipation for all things Sam to come.
ReplyDeleteI love that Sam has been quietly strong this season, the man gets on with the job and is doing it without complaint. Its something to be admired.
That being said I would like Sam's emotional storyline to be brought to the forefront as the season goes on.
Hopefully in season 8 they give Jared more to do, maybe let him have his 'The End' 'Fronterland' and 'Time After Time' for a change. I think a few more friends and hook-ups are in order too, he cant just go on being the quiet on who researches and doesnt have anyone in his life. Hopefully Jody is the start of change for Sam, the writers need to keep her around for a long time to come and have her be the support/friend Sam needs. It would also be good for her since she has lost her family and had her eyes opened up to some scary shit.
I cannot wait for Crazy!Sam. It's going to be awesome and there'll be Big Brother!Dean and alksdjfa;lsdkfjalksdfjasdf.
ReplyDeleteI mostly agree, although I think that they could have given us more clues as to what Sam was really thinking during all of this time. If he had someone to confide in, that may have done the trick. Some things work as a mystery. This didn't.
ReplyDeleteYes this is what frustrates me at times with Sams storytelling.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to take something positive from something that frustrated a lot of fans.
ReplyDeleteIt is pretty obvious the writers were lazy when it came to Sam in the first half of season 7 and its likely to continue in the second hald despite the positive spin Jared and SG have tried to put on it. It gives the writers far too much credit.
I think a lot of actors out there would have kicked up a lot more fuss if they're been given so little to work with the way Jared has.
Hopefully season 8 gives us more Sam, I'll excuse this season because I'm more interested in Jared's impending fatherhood than I am the storylines and most iof this season has been a let down on the Sam front already.
Good questions and answers and Jared is right about the shirtless scenes. I do enjoy them, hey I'm 73 not DEAD, but that is not why I love SPN. Looking forward to crazy Sam, sounds interesting and Sam taking care of Dean.
ReplyDeleteI also got a blank box, but I had tried to opened the link in a new tab. When I just clicked on link it worked. FF 7.0.1
ReplyDeleteI'm loving all the SPN interviews! There's been a lot recently.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and I just hope that they do show us some of those things in this season. I'm not quite sure that it will be throughout the rest of the season, they could just do one or two episodes probably one of the last of the season. I've noticed it as a trend
ReplyDeleteOh totally agree with you. I mean I get the whole fan upset with Dean not being a part of the mythology, etc but in fact for the past two seasons it hasn't been about the core mythology of the show since there is no real angels/demon SL--Lucifer aside of course but Lucifer isn't the boys' big bad anymore rather he is solely Sam's.
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm trying to say is that with the shift of the mythology--the story has really focused on how Dean is coping with everything including Sam and what he is doing re: the Levis. And I feel like there is no Sam POV and don't get me started on the brother relationship. I'm happy that it is still there but it feels buried under the boys' individual angst.
Sams pov has struggled to come through since season 2 really but only really got worst in season 4. What baffles me is how it never seems to occur to the writers to do insightful scenes for Sam that can be so simple in their construction take very little time up and yet can clue the audience in so easily.
ReplyDeletePutting that aside I love Jareds interviews he gave us more to what is going on with Sam in one interview than the writers did in 11 episodes.
It's a really interesting interview and although it's Jared speaking it sort of seems that it's Sam who's giving us the info.:)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad they are going to address Sam's hell problems as there was such a lot made of it when his wall was brought down; he just seemed too unnaturally calm so it was to be expected.
It was sweet of him to mention Colin. He must like the way that he portrays young Sam.
It would have been nice for him to have had a cameo in the episode just to see how he would have dealt with the clowns.
If they could find a good, credible look-alike actor for Teen Dean, it would be wonderful, so that we could have more episodes of the young Winchesters' adventures together!
All in all looking forward to future episodes, as always:-)
That is so true, I loved the interview and what is going on in Sam's head.
ReplyDeletecool
ReplyDeleteBig fan of Colin Ford, he is perfect as young Sam. The only young Dean I have liked is Ridge Canipe, did not care for the teen Dean at all.
ReplyDeleteI expect the last 10 episodes after Dean's 13 episode arc will be quite evenly split in terms of focus. There will likely be 2 Sam centric eps, 1 or 2 Cas centric 1 or 2 of those will be Dean heavy and who knows 1 may be Sam heavy and also 3 or 4 Dean cenric episodes.
ReplyDeleteDean heavy episodes tend to be just that-Dean heavy where as Sam heavy episodes tend to have a lot of Dean.
I expect some Sam story in the second half of the season but not much more than the first half. 2-3 episodes at the most.
I agree, Ridge Canipe was perfect in the role, a good mix of hard-nosed kid and tender brother. He was a very believable young Dean and had chemistry with Colin, whom I love.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen anything of him recently.
What age would he be and would be still be adapt to pay a young Dean, I wonder?
I agree that that will be the focus with probably 3 Cas centric episodes because it has been noted that Misha is coming back for a three ep storyline.
ReplyDeleteDean heavy episodes tend to be just that-Dean heavy where as Sam heavy episodes tend to have a lot of Dean.
Exactly!! This has been my quarrel with Supernatural. I don't mind the Dean episodes but I do mind that Sam episode seem to be just as much about Dean if not more at times. I don't see them as Sam episodes anymore more like Brother episodes with a slight emphasis on Sam
OH YES!!!
ReplyDeleteI recall being interested in S4 re: angels until I realized that more than half the season had gone by and no insight about Sam. Episode 4x17 was a huge turning point for me and my viewership of the show--until then I was firmly bi-bro and didn't get the brother wars.
Yep, esp. I love the little tidbit about his relationship with Cas. I've never accepted that they were friends on the show--more like tolerated each other for Dean's sake.
Ridge was born in July 94 and I do hope they use him again, but Colin is perfect and I am going to see the movie We Bought A Zoo just because he is in it and I can think..SAM. lol
ReplyDeleteI knew Sam was going to completely lose it. But I have a feeling it'll be around the last episode. ...Or maybe not since he's only ready till 15.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm....
This is a great interview. I love how he reemphasizes that no one can replace Bobby and having Sam's crazy leak out is important and will hopefully lead to happier fans. I felt Sam's grief in Adventures in Babysitting so I'm not sure I agree with the interviewer. It seemed like both brothers were in character for how their grief was portrayed. I particularly agreed with Jared that "
ReplyDeletethe audience gets sick of pushing the magic button" when too powerful people are in the series. I take great comfort in knowing that is the idea on set and hope it is in the writers' room too. However I am disappointed that as of episode 16 there does not sound like there has been much movement on the Leviathan front. I was hoping that would be the focal point from here on out. I also love how he mentions that there is only about one sex scene/shirtless scene each season. I am fine with that to be honest. Jared's right, I wouldn't watch the show if it were just one eye candy scene after another.
The thing about Sam and his wall breaking, it just seemed to Bella Swan-ish for me, all these bad things SHOULD be happening but she's special so everything is just easy for her (not that it's easy for Sam but his problems are so down played, one could almost forget about his story line this season)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I'm looking forward to seeing Sam take on that older brother role for a while - Dean's really spiraling, and it'll be nice to see Sam step up
ReplyDeleteThis makes me even more excited for the rest of season 7 and on into season 8 :)
ReplyDeleteAw, damn it. I don't need any more batsh*t crazy Sam.
ReplyDeletethanks for the link! :) saved it for laters!
