Supernatural - Midseason Polls - Favorite Comedy Episode Round 3

5 Jan 2012

Less than 48 hours and the season 7 midseason hiatus will officially be over. With all the previews and promo pictures, I know excitement is skyrocketing. But until then, we still have a best comedy crown to bestow. The final 8 have been selected with nary a sweat broken. In fact, Changing Channels ended last round with a whopping 90% of the vote. Perhaps this round will be more suspenseful. After all, it sees Tall Tales take on Mystery Spot, two fan favorites. Voting ends at 9 PM tomorrow St. Louis time. Enjoy!

  1. Easy, easy voting today, except for the last round.  Changing Channels has everything from snarky one-liners to full out belly laughs.  It turns meta to fun.  Come on, who doesn't want to smack CSI Miami's Horatio Caine every time they have the misfortune of flipping channels and landing on it?  Hell House had the brother pranks and.....um....nope Harry and Ed don't qualify as quality humor for me.  Changing Channels it is.

Bad Day at Black Rock not just because it rocks but also because I would vote for any episode that made me laugh before Yellow Fever.  At this point, I'd vote for Bugs against it.  Nothing screams hilariously bad TV making more than InstaDawn.  It's almost a classic.

The French Mistake made me laugh the entire way through it.  Clap Your Hands made me laugh when RoboSam spoke and with the microwave.  The rest of it made me cringe and wonder what the heck Ben Edlund was smoking.  Did we really need to go to the fairy realm?

Tall Tales vs Mystery Spot is the first major competition of this contest in my opinion.  To be perfectly honest, Tall Tales was funnier in terms of time spent laughing (basically the whole episode).  Mystery Spot wins in laugh density and laugh-related muscle ache.  So really I'm good with whichever one moves to the next round.  I tossed this over a few times, changing my mind every few minutes.  In the end, I'm going to reverse my opinion going into the contest and hand my vote to Tall Tales.  Mystery Spot is definitely the better overall episode and I still consider it a comedy even though people who don't make a very compelling argument as to why it is not.  Enough of a point that I know I would feel comfortable voting Mystery Spot in a best drama episode contest.  I wouldn't with Tall Tales and that makes the tiniest fraction of a difference as my tie breaker.

  2. No surprises in my votes, except the last poll!
1 - Changing Channels2 - Bad Day at Black Rock
    3 - The French Mistake
    4 - Tall Tales

I almost voted for Mystery Spot; in fact I'm a bit shocked that I didn't vote for Mystery Spot...but the truth is it's only funny the first half of the episode, while Tall Tales delivers up to the end. In fact it wasn't even that hard of a decision to vote for Tall Tales. It gives us Jared and Jensen getting to act slightly out-of-character, as based on the respective brother's interpretation. I just think it's a pretty brilliant story-telling technique, and so funny! So, in the end, though I LOVE Mystery Spot so much, I had to vote Tall Tales.

  3. I really, really, really, REALLY dislike Clap your Hands. The French Mistake is far, far funnier. I agree with your assessment of Tall Tales versus Mystery Spot, and I also ended up voting for Tall Tales because as a "comedy" episode, it has advantage over Mystery Spot for being funny to the end.

  4. Finally a little easier.

Changing Channels, Bad Day at Black Rock (this one was difficult.  Loved Yellow Fever...but weighed my, admittedly vague, memory of the laughs..and story...and BDaBR got the vote), The French Mistake, and Tall Tales.

  5. 1. Changing Channels - no competition
    2. Yellow Fever - I feel like this is almost a competition between which Winchester brother is more hilarious being messed with. Personally, Dean being terrified at the little kitty is probably my favorite comedy moment of the whole series. Add to that all the other hilarious moments in the episode, plus my love for Dean and Jensen's surprise performance at the end made Yellow Fever my top choice here. Though I will say Sam's "I lost my shoe" moment was a major comedic highlight in the series as well.
    3. The French Mistake - This one was a bit of a difficult one as well, but I loved the breaking of the fourth wall, so it won.
    4. Mystery Spot - Honestly, I voted for this because I can never remember all the bits in Tall Tales. All I remember really is that each brother's retelling is just so wildly in their favor that it's ridiculous. In thinking more about it, I probably should have gone with Tall Tales, but Mystery Spot was still so great anyway. Though I think it's interesting that these two are up against each other since they're both Trickster episodes.

Also wondering what Dahne has against Yellow Fever...

  6. What's wrong with Yellow Fever? :-/

  7. Do you mind explaining why you hated Clap Your Hands so much?  I didn't like it, that's for sure, but mostly because I think it did the series a disservice by opening up a fairy realm that is apparently more powerful than angels.  Supernatural does not need yet another all powerful realm to go to, either as friend or foe.  I'm afraid that fairies will one day be the go to "get out of writer's block free" card in the future and it took us forever to get rid of the last crutch.

  8. I am rather shocked that I voted against Mystery Spot too.  I thought I would be wrestling whether to vote for it all the way to the finals.  I still think that it will take Tall Tales in the end because it is loved by almost everyone (Bruce is a notable exception  :-P) and when 2 episodes give you laughs that's usually the biggest criteria.  Too bad it wasn't going against Clap Your Hands, Hell House, or Yellow Fever though.  Then I would have no questions about what to vote for.

  9. I think this is the last easy vote.  After all, it is very likely that tomorrow will see Changing Channels go against Bad Day at Black Rock.  Talk about a difficult choice.  These two would be my top picks for comedy.

  10. I find Yellow Fever to be hideously out of character for both brothers.  Normally empathetic Sam comes off as a complete jerk and the writers do everything but state right out that Dean has to be a d*** to have caught the ghost sickness.  Those two things negate any humor I find in the episode at all.  In general I feel it is terribly written by people who must have used a one-page character sheet before script writing instead of actually watching the show to see who these characters are.  I mean this is the only episode where Kripke had to do an interview to explain a character assassination in the writing.  This episode started my utter disdain of writers Dabb and Loflin.  My other major problem is that it has the most ridiculous plot of any episode this side of Route 666's killer racist truck.  Scaring a ghost to death?  Really?

  11. im starting to enjoy these polls

  12. I never really thought of the Bad Day at Black Rock vs Yellow Fever as a brother vs brother comedy off.  I guess that's because while it is Sam in the predicament in BDaBR, both brothers share the comedy.  Sam's "I lost my shoe" is classic in that it involves both brothers to make it funny.  Sam knocking himself out in the hotel is balanced by Dean's "I'm Batman" line.  This episode has so many great lines and facial expressions from the brothers, Bela, etc. that I consider it one of the more balanced episodes of them all.  As for Yellow Fever, see my response to your first question.

  13. First Poll: Hah, so easy. I like Hell House, but no way can it compete with Changing Channels, which is total win. In fact..I think I'm going to watch the Herpexia ad now!

Second Poll: I like and enjoy both of these episodes, but Bad Day at Black Rock is the choice for me.

Third Poll: I like Clap Your Hands, but of course I have to go with The French Mistake. TFM is hilarious!

Fourth Poll: This one is haaaard, but if any of y'all remember my comments from the other polls, I'm sure you aren't surprised I have to go with Mystery Spot. I love Tall Tales, and it's very funny, but Mystery Spot is wonderful and the first half is hilarious and it's my favorite, so. Yup.

  14. I find Yellow Fever okay and pretty funny but it always bothered me that Sam seemed so uncaring that Dean was close to death. D:

  15. Mostly I don't like it because I really don't like Soulless Sam, especially in this episode because by this point he's not even trying very hard to "pretend".  The thing I love most about Supernatural is the relationship between the brothers, so seeing it completely broken was so hard for me, and I really had a very hard time watching the first half of season six. I will gladly watch any episode in the latter half of s6 (Mannequin 3: The Reckoning) over any of the first half.  I also thought the entire plot was silly and I was kind of embarrassed for the guys; and lastly, for a Ben Edlund script...I though it was kind of terrible. :-\

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yeah, I don't really have any hopes that Tall Tales will win, but I have no regrets about the way I voted! And I suppose if it has to lose to an episode, I'm okay with it being Mystery Spot.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I disagree with your hits and misses most of the time. :-D  But I think you're right about the addition of fairies to the universe.

  18. one of these days you're going to run a poll that's all easy answers.   I've started a savings account to bribe you do to it. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  19. That makes sense.  I actually liked RoboSam so that was never a game ender for me.  As for Ben Edlund, I typically like what he writes.  Several of my top episodes were written by him.  But if he writes an episode I don't like, I really, really don't like it.  4 of my least favorite episodes of all time were written by him.  In fact, CYHiYB may be the only Ben Edlund script that gets a thumbs down vote from me but is not on my 25 worst episodes list.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ha!  I can also be bribed in Supernatural merchandise.  My Impala keychain just broke (hint, hint).  Perhaps the next poll should be do you want a season eight.  Or maybe a best vehicles of Supernatural contest.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh yeah, an Edlund episode is usually a home-run for me, but this one just hurt my soul.
And 25 worst!? Really? I think I could maybe make a list of 5-10 worst, but there are literally only a handful that I actively avoid watching because I can usually find something good in all of them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I've stated my reasons for my picks a couple of times now so I'll just list 'em this time:
Changing Channels, Bad Day At Black Rock, Clap Your Hands If You Believe, Tall Tales.

  23. todays were all easy except the last one but i know that next round is gonna be really really hard
    voted changing channels
    bad day at black rock
    the french mistake
this last one was a killer. i love mystery spot, its my all time fave episode. but i think as a comedy, i prefer tall tales. mystery spot is really funny, but tall tales is too and its a full comedy episode. and they both have the trickster. but i just love everything in tall tales. so my vote went to tall tales. but it was a tough decision

    ReplyDelete
  24. Very easy polls except the last one :( Mystery Spot and Tall Tales are two of my favorite comedies!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Easy peasy! Changing Channels, Bad Day At Black Rock, The French Mistake and Mystery spot.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love the best vehicle contest idea. hee hee

  27. The Tall Tales Mystery spot poll was a killer.  I ended up going with Mystery Spot, because after I finished Mystery Spot the first time I remember thinking "Wow, that trumped Tall Tales."  Mystery Spot is sadder, I think, but for me that made the funny moments funnier to me because they stood out more with the contrast.  However, a part of my heart is still dead, and I'm still kind of conflicted.  I wish they could have both moved on to the next round.

  28. I think the two best song to scenes in SPN are; Back in Black, when Dean gets the Impala back up and running in season 2 and Wanted Dead or Alive, when they are hunting down Lilith.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The first three were very easy.Changing Channels,Bad Day at Black Rock and The French Mistake.

The last one was a little tricky.First of all,it's a win-win situation,I'll be perfectly happy no matter which episode progresses to the next round.
Mystery Spot is a really unique episode. It contains both comedy and drama, both at their finest and if this was a best episode competition it would definitely get my vote,no matter how much I enjoy Tall Tales. But given the fact that we're looking for best comedy episode,it's weird voting for an episode that could also easily be in a best drama competition. If it faced some of the other nominations from previous polls the first half of comedy would be more than enough.Against Tall Tales though, which was also pure gold as far as comedy goes,it has a slight disadvantage.
    So,Tall Tales it is.

  30. 1. Changing Channels
    2. Bad Day at Black Rock because I LOL in this ep.
    3. The French Mistake, this was easy even though I LOVE Clap Your Hands and Robo "Empathy" Sam.
    4. Going to think about this one before I vote.

    ReplyDelete
  31. That's why I love your review. You total speak what I feel. Not even the great performance of Jensen could rescue the writing. Except perhaps eye of the tiger. Oops! That's not in the script.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Its not that Dean had to be a dick it's the fact that he used fear as a weapon... ergo the time he spent in hell torturing souls... there's a reason why Lilith showed up at the end and its not because she is Deans greatest fear...  its to remind him of what he regretted and had nightmares about every day. And I enjoyed Yellow Fever and Clap Your Hands if You Believe, I thought they were hilarious!

  33. I am a huge Dodge/Chrysler fan, but in SPN the ONLY vehicle I want to connect with is Baby. ;)

  34. OK had a cup of coffee and ready to vote in the last poll.  Since I thought the different stories told by the guys were very silly and 9 year old stuff, I went with Mystery Spot.  I know the last part was not comedy, but the first was classic.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't have the same love of French Mistake as everyone else. It faded over time compared to the others it's up against, for me.

    ReplyDelete
  36. This one was really hard for me!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Even I found today's poll easy. Changing Channels, Bad Day at Black Rock, The French Mistake, and Tall Tales. That last one was the only one I really had to think twice about, but in the end it came down to the fact that Tall Tales had no Winchesters dying in it. ;P

  38. I didn't break a sweat with these votes - Changing Channels, Bad Day at Black Rock, The French Mistake, and Mystery Spot.  All four of these are go-to episodes when I want to revisit an episode that makes me smile.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1.   Changing Channels of course.  It was just plain fun.  The take offs on the all the shows was fabulous.  My favorite was the Impala becoming Sam including the Knight Rider theme.  lol

    2.  Bad Day at Black Rock far out does Yellow Fever, which I do like.

    3.  The French Mistake of course.  I'm afraid it will end this one and Changing Channels.  I have no idea how I'm voting.

    4.  Both episodes are funny, but Tall Tales is just a little bit better.

  40. The last round was a tough one. Omg, i missed spoilerTV so much!!!! I'm back woo hooo

  41. It's my worst of Supernatural list.  However, I usually think the worst of Supernatural is better than 90% of the other stuff on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Ok, so THAT'S an easy one: almost every single electronic device I own (laptop, TV iphone, wifi router) was 'out of service', i.e broken. I am NOT kidding :))) Thank God it's 2012!!!

cant wait for the SPN live stream. 3 am?

  43. Oh my! That sounds bad. Good to see you back!
