Supernatural - Midseason Poll - Season 7 Final and Comedy Run-Off

1 Jan 2012

Happy New Year Supernatural fans! Let's hope it's one filled with at least a couple of Winchester smiles and a bit of fun. As we head into the final round for the best season 7 episode so far, we say goodbye to 2 great episodes: Hello, Cruel World and Slash Fiction (my personal choice). That leaves us with Death's Door and Meet the New Boss, also the two most voted in the preliminary round. An easy choice for me, but possibly harder for others.

In other news, we need a run-off vote for the Best Comedy poll. We hit a snafu in the numbers (not enough episodes if I cut it off at one spot, too many if I cut it off at another) so we need to do a run off of episodes that didn't get enough votes to qualify. The top 6 get into the actual contest, which will put us at an even 32 episodes. This contest will run for less than 24 hours (about 8:00 pm St. Louis time) so I have time to create the Best Comedy Episode poll and put it up by midnight tomorrow night. This will hopefully allow us to end the polls right as the hellatus is ending. Please pass the word and don't forget to cast your 2 votes.

Finally don't forget to nominate your favorite Supernatural song (nominations end tomorrow) and favorite song-to-scene (nominations end in 2 days).

  1. For season 7, my vote definitely goes to Death's Door.  While I really liked much of Meet the New Boss, I loved ALL on Death's Door.  It had comedy at the beginning, high drama at the end, and more twists than I can count.  Sure the cliffhanger wasn't my favorite part but its hard to beat the Dean-Dick face-off or Bobby's memories.  Plus I really hate religious and political commentary from the SPN staff like much of MtNB.

The comedies are harder.  Some of these I never considered comedies and thus this will be the first time I do not vote for WiaWSNB.  It's the best episode to me, but not comedy-wise.  I do smile throughout it though.  My picks narrow down to:

Fallen Idols because killer Ghandi will always be funny
Phantom Traveler because of Dean's fear of flying and the awesome airport scene
Playthings because Sam was drunk (even though I can't stand anything else in this episode)
Sam, Interrupted because "boop" is hilarious as is the opening interview and drugged Sam
Shut Up, Dr. Phil because of the great guest stars and Dean/Sam as marriage counselors

  2. Death's Door for me!
And The Curious Case of Dean Winchester and Shut Up, Dr. Phil!

  3. I love so much about Meet the New Boss, but I had to go with Death's Door. I guess it came down, in the end, to the way it sucked me right in there. I was right there with Bobby all the way. I felt what he was feeling. I felt what Sam and Dean were feeling. Amazingly awesome tv. I could go on but I won't.

As to the comedy run off, in all the episodes there were funny parts, but I wouldn't call any of them comedy episodes as such.

In the end I went with Sam, Interrupted - because: "Pudding!" Crazy works" "Boop" "Spectaculacular" and the scene at the beginning with Sam & Dean in the doctor's office.

My other choice is Shut Up Dr Phil - because: The beginning scene with Sam & Dean where Sam has just returned from a run. "Somebody better be chasing you" "No, don’t say ‘yeah, okay,’ like [mocks him] ‘Yeah, okay.’" Also, the rough cut scene that Jared tweeted will always stay emblazoned into my memory. Plus the scene where Sam & Dean play marriage counsellors - just hilarious. And the cupcakes. Gross, but also hilarious.

  4. Death's Door. For what the episode did for the Winchesters, it's pivotal, and it has so much more weight then Meet The New Boss. I liked Meet The New Boss, but head to head there really wasn't any decision to make for me.

Also...wow. I wouldn't consider any of the episodes listed in this Comedy poll to be comedy episodes. All of these had some funny moments but comedy? What Is And What Never Should Be? Not a comedy in my opinion. But, since votes are needed I cast mine for After School Special and Fallen Idols. Both of these, I think, were lighter in tone and had a sense of "fun" going. Especially Fallen Idols. And anything that makes fun of Paris Hilton is okay in my book. I'm really curious to see the rest of the Comedy nominations, if they were that wide that another poll was necessary...

  5. I agree with you about WiaWSNB. An amazing episode and though I smile throughout as well, it's not because it's funny, but rather because I love seeing Dean so happy even though it's actually a very tragic situation he's in.

  6. I really loved both episodes but my vote went to Death's Door and I have to admit that the second poll confused me terribly because I don't consider any of the episodes real comedies so my vote was random.

  7. Voted for Death's Door.
So touching, and if Bobby is really dead, then it's a mile-stone in the Winchester world, just as John's death was.

I wouldn't have considered many of these episodes as comedy episodes and in some I can't even remember a funny scene.
However, I shall go with Phantom Traveller, as Dean's fear of flying and Sam's trying to calm him down were so amusing.
Then it's one of my favourite episodes which I have watched many times.

I'll go for Playthings 'cause drunk Sammy was just so sweet, and I'm dying to see Sam's antique  doll collection! :-)

  9. Nice to see all my picks among them but I doubt any will make it to the end.
    Time wil  tell.

By the way, only five days to Supernatural's next ep.
I hope that many viewers will give it a warm welcome and it manages to get a good rating. :)

I went with Death's Door for the season 7 episode. Mostly because its more recent and I haven't watched the other in a while. But they both are very good episodes.

As for the comedy episodes I went with Bedtime Stories and Sam, Interrupted. I love Dean making fun of Sam because he knows about the fairy tales, and also Drugged Sam was very funny to watch as well =]

  11. Meet the New Boss for the first poll, but I don't really mind, they are hands down the best episodes of season 7.MtNB had Death and Crowley which is always a plus and a surprising appear from Lucifer.Add the storyline and it has a little edge for me over Death's Door.

Fallen Idols and Shut Up,Dr.Phil for the second poll. It's funny that we have to vote differently here.Shut Up,Dr Phil was a pretty good episode but Fallen Idols doesn't get my votes usually,as it's not very high on my list. But they're the ones I would consider closer to a comedy..
I didn't expect some of the episodes to be there. What Is and What Should Never Be,Mommy Dearest..?!?!
    Anyway,Happy New Year everyone! : )

  12. That's interesting to say the least.Out of the 26 episodes, there are only 14 that I would name comedies and a couple more that had some light moments,so it could go either way.
But some of them,I never expected to see in a poll like this.I mean, how on earth is My Bloody Valentine on that list?!?I'm guessing because of the Cupid scene, but for me it was more of a break to calm my stomach..

This poll was a very good idea,it's really cool to see the variety of opinions!

  13. Death's Door.

After School Special,  The Curious Case of Dean Winchester and complete befuddlement at some of the episodes that wound up in this list.

  14. voted meet the new boss. i loved deaths door but i just found the season premier was way more exciting. it had death!
for best comedy, most of those i would not consider comedies, so much so i fiund it hard to pick a second.
i mean, there are scenes in each of those episodes that make me laugh but i would not consider the epidoe on the whole as a comedy. i ended up voting the mentalists and bedtime stories. cant wait for this competiton to start. i love the comedies

  15. looks like a good list. although i'm sure those ones at the top wil make it to the end, it will be fun to see how it goes overall. there are ome here that even though theybhad scenes that made me laugh, i never considered them to be a comedy episode. some also that i didnt think of in the nomination stage but i agree with being here. its funny reading down this list and seeing so many different options, its awesome that every one gets something so different out of supernatural

  16. I loved Death's Door!

But LOL, what were some of the choices in the comedy section? Some I didn't think were comedic!

    ReplyDelete
  17. There are several in there I would never think of as comedy, but the voting is fun.

  18. Death's Door hands down for me, now if it gets to be a heads up with Swan Song, SS will get my vote.

Don't call any of these comedy, but went with Shut Up Dr. Phil, the marriage council part was great and What Is and What Should Never Be..Dean mowing the grass got a chuckle out of me, but the rest of it was very sad.  Should have gone with Sam, Interrupted, maybe should wait to vote until after my first cup of coffee.

  19. Death's Door beyond a doubt.  There is nothing that I don't like about the episode.  For one thing, we know beyond a doubt that not only does Bobby think of those boys as his sons, they think of him as their Dad.  I loved that.  I do not like religious or political commentary.  Never have.  I am involved in both but it does belong in my entertainment. lol

I looked at the comedy list.  Some of these brought a smile to my face but I didn't laugh.  WIAWSNB does not belong on this list.   I cried and smiled through it but there were no comedy moments.  It's the best of SPN as far as writing goes, but not comedy.

    1.  Sam, Interrupted.   It had it's moments.  I'm Dean girl but I love Sam too.  Both of them had moments of great comedy.
    2.  Phantom Traveler has some fabulous comedy in it.  Dean's fear of flying it great.

Okay, I have tried this twice.  The comedy is only allowing 2 votes.   I did these two.  Will see if it will let me log back in and do 2 more.  Crazy.

  20. I'll be honest: I did eeny-meenie-miney-mo for the first poll. I love both MtNB and DD so much, there's no way I could choose between them. Meet the New Boss was my carefully selected winner. :D

I have to say, I am puzzled by some of the "comedy" nominations above (WIaWSNB? Really? I thought it was one of the most poignant and creepy episodes they've ever aired for Supernatural). Of the list, there are four that I would truly consider comedic (and even they have dark moments for the most part). My choices were The Mentalists and Sam, Interrupted. The other two on my short list were Shut Up, Dr. Phil and Fallen Idols.

  21. Wow, at first I was like WTF for the list of comedy episodes...then I went back and READ the article. Yay me.

Shut Up, Dr. Phil (Charisma playing witch bitch was the best) and Mommy Dearest (Cas was pure comedic gold the first half of this episode)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Meet the New Boss for me (although my personal fav is Hello, Cruel World), because I still don't get all the Bobby-centric episodes love. Death's Door was great, but episodes 1 and 2 were beyond amazing.

as for the other poll - how is any of these a comedy episode? I'd never even think of nominating them, but apparently some people did. I liked single funny scenes in many of them, so chosing was not easy.
I went with Mommy Dearest for Cas and Phantom Traveler for Dean's fear of flying.

    ReplyDelete
  23. wow, people really did nominate some episodes for like one funny scene.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Wow, it's going to be close one for Meet The New Boss and Death's Door!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Meet the new boss - I'm voting for story over sentiment.

Many of these choices for comedy are completely baffling unless a lot of people are voting sarcastically.
My votes go to The Curious Case of Dean Winchester and The Mentalists.

  26. Actually I think it made the list because of "Boop".  Drugged up Sam was hilarious.  Although for me it is the interview they had at the beginning with the psychiatrist that was comedy gold.  The true story of season 4 and 5 told so matter of factly to the psychiatrist and watching his reaction was awesome.

Sam:  "I'm fine.  I mean a little depressed I guess."
    Dr.:  "Any idea why?"
Sam:  "Probably because I started the Apocalypse....I killed this demon Lilith and I accidentally freed Lucifer from hell and now he's topside and we're trying to stop him."
    Dr.:  "Um, who is?"
Sam:  "Me. Him.  And this one angel."
Dr:  "You mean like an angel of your shoulder."
Sam:  "No, his name is Castiel.  He wears a trench coat."
Dean:  "See what I mean Doc.  The kid's been beating himself up about this for months.  The Apocalypse wasn't his fault."
    Dr:  "It's not?"
Dean:  "No, it was this other demon Ruby. She got him addicted to demon blood.  I mean near the end he was practically chugging the stuff.  My brother's not evil.  He was just....high.  So could you fix him up so that we can get back to traveling around the country and hunting monsters."
    Dr:  "Erma, cancel my lunch."

By the way, I loved your review.  I'm going to comment a bit later but I need to think about what I want to say before putting it out there.

  27. Phantom Traveler has always remained a comic gem in my heart.  I always wished they'd done more with Dean's fear of flying, it was hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Death's Door easily. Disappointed that Slash Fiction is out but it makes the final choice easier for me.

Tough choice for the comedy eps as none of them are overtly funny. But going on funny moments in the eps I went with Playthings and Mommy Dearest.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Had to go with "Death's Door" which may very well become my fav episode period.
comedies thougher I went with WiaWSNB cause I smile all through but as was stated not really comedy and The Curious Case just loved that one

    ReplyDelete
  30. yep, this scene made the episode for me too xD maybe I should've gone with Sam, Interrupted after all.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hello?! Frontierland, Clap Your Hands If You Believe, and French Mistake? WTH?

    ReplyDelete
  32. This spring will be very telling.  Hopefully the ratings will hold steady and we'll be greeted with news of a season 8 long before May upfronts.

As for the polls, there are clear front runners for the win.  I would only consider maybe 5 as even possible real contenders.

    ReplyDelete
  33. "But for me it was more of a break to calm my stomach."  Bwah!  Very aptly put.  I never considered it a comedy but generally I try not to consider that gross fest at all.

    ReplyDelete
  34. It is amazing how different people see different things in an episode.  There were several nominated that i didn't even consider that I know I will vote for.
