  1. It was a great episode! I'm definitely going to continue watching.

  2. Loved it. I figure the returnees are clones.

  3. I'm enjoying the series more than expected but....

I still wish Jorge's character would be less Hurley-like. By that I mean more confident, less befuddled when he speaks. I would like to see him play more of a confident authority on Alcatraz and not some eccentric bumbling comic book writer. I hope Hauser's speech got through to him because I am also VERY tired of seeing the childlike Hurley... or Doc Soto.

I do really like Johnny Coyne as Warden James. He makes a compelling "grey" character that walks that line between good and bad and leaves you wondering exactly where he fits into things at Alcatraz.I wonder if Michael Eklund (Kit Nelson) has ever played a sane, good guy before? I mean I have seen him in a number of shows: Blood Ties, The Bridge, Shattered and Endgame. and he was half a deck short in each role. Honestly if you combined all his cards from all those roles I'm still not sure he would have a full deck! XD

I missed the myth arc a lot this week. It was touched on a little with another appearance of Grandpa Tommy Madsen and the return of the fabulous Leon Rippy as The Doctor/ Dr Beauregard.  This was somewhat fun, but I need more of the overarching story in the episode or I will lose interest fast.I rated this just "OK" honestly, I would have said great but with little to no myth arc it felt like a strict procedural. IF I'm going to watch a procedural it needs to have better acting.

  4. Possibly the best episode so far. The character are becoming rounder, and the criminals are becoming less and less likeable. I mean, Sylvane was a sad case, Cobb was a result of traumatic childhood, but Kit Nelson was just plain crazy.

Honestly, not as good as "Person of Interest" or "Once Upon a Time," but still very enjoyable!

even though i never watched lost i bet that he jorge will get better. its understandable for anyone who is watching his character to see why he's like that. especially with that revelation that he was kidnapped at 11 that makes it much more understandable and worse for him.

  6. I had actually written the bit about Jorge as Hurley, or being childlike BEFORE the scene where Hauser exposed Doc Soto's childhood trauma.

It does add a lot to the character and makes sense for him to be childlike. I can accept that and it does make for a good character (or origin story as Soto would say), but the mannerisms and childlike traits remind me so much of Hurley on LOST. Unlike most LOST fans I was not a Hurley fan particularly. So seeing him as Hurley is not a good thing for me.

The big difference is that Doc Soto has his personal issues but seems to overcome most of the time. HE does not have that screw up trait that Hurley had. So Doc is a step up from Hurley for me personal.....

I agree about this 63 returnee. He was not a very sympathetic character. I liked that frankly. I love "grey" characters that have dark and light, but sometimes people are just plain screwed up and evil.

I know most serial shows do have the ebb and flow of heavy myth arc episodes and more COTW filler episodes. I was happy with the amount of back story in the pilot, and I think having Episode 2 right after made it easier for me to not notice the lack of myth arc.

It's very early in the series and I'm not "worried" just yet, but 2 out of 3 episodes being procedural will annoy me if it holds to that ration as the series goes on.

  7. Good ep. The VoTW was definitely creepy. But it was nice to get a little more insight to Doc Soto, and that the reveal that the prison dr is a traveller as well (who most likely gave Nelson the cigarettes Soto found) but to what end... I do want to see a "less Hurley-ized" Soto from Jorge, and still want Sam Neil to glare less and show a bit more emotion in his character. I am still wondering why Hauser doesn't have more people on his team looking for the 63's other than just him, Soto, Madsen, and Lucy....

  8. I'm starting to sense a clone-vibe, with all the blood they take from the ones who show back up.  But other than the Indian girl and the doctor (still not familiar with everyone's names yet), I can't imagine why they would clone the criminals, let them out, and then just re-imprison them.

Obviously we've only seen three hours of the show so it's way too early to be making any real theories though.  I'm still sticking with time-travel as being the most obvious one for now.

  9. Wow, this episode was a huge step up in all aspects. And damn there were some parts that made me squirm. It reminded me of the Trinity Killer, when they revealed the secret 4th part of the killer's process... (the missing boy held underground)

    ReplyDelete
  10. The show lost me on that scene where the girl-cop dropped her gun and
let a serial killer go. That's just dumb. She knew the guy always kills
his victims, so why let hime go when she has him under her gun?
Realistically, the boy would have a better chance if she held her ground
and kept her gun on him. Read more: http://www.tvfanatic.com/2012/01/alcatraz-review-kit-nelson/#ixzz1kMIfBtig

  11. Really good episode.  Better than the first two (which is a good direction to be going in.  I'm hoping for another Grimm...a show that just keeps getting better and better)

However there is a question that I want an answer to or it's going to annoy me because it feels dropped.  Are these guys *all* begin released with a task?  I am perfectly fine with some of them being so crazy (or honery enough) that the second they're free they ignore their assigned agenda and do what I want.  But, in the first three or four episodes when I'm supposed to be figuring out what's going on; what the rules of the show are...to just not even mention this element is a big deal for me. These first few episodes are supposed to be setting up the mains story questions for the series and, for me at least, this major question has been muddled because, right now, I can't tell if it IS one of the show's story questions. So, are all of these guys being released with a mission and some are just ignoring it or is it that for some, chaos is the mission. Funny aside:  When Sam Neil hauled that body into the new Alcatraz my first thought was 'He couldn't get a minion do do that for him?'

  12. OH GOOD HEAVENS!!!!!  I completely did not recognize Michael Eklund without his facial hair. COMPLETELY.  Wow.  (he wasn't a bad guy in Supernatural. :-)

I have to disagree with you about Jorge's character.  I think the Hurely in the present day scenes was always confident.  He wasn't pushy or 'out there' in the way he expressed it but when he set out to accomplish something he never seemed to me to have a lack of confidence. If anything, I think he frequently found himself having to prove to others what he knew about himself to be true.  The first two examples that come to mind would be the "I can make it.  I'm spry." scene and the golf game.  As for Soto...I think between the backstory we were given tonight and all of the emotional balls that have been lobbed at the guy that we are going to see him grow up and have more faith in the abilities that brought him here so I'm not worried.

I missed seeing Grandpa Tommy...where was he?

I agree with you about the arc story.  (My personal rant is in my comment further down.)  It's feeling like they're so worried about trying to assuage the network worry that people who don't like arc story shows won't tune in that they ignore that major element of the show.  Except that inherent in the premise of the show is  that arc.  The people who are tuning in want that stuff.  Give it to us dern it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm wondering the same thing....
I was expecting the first 3 or 4 episodes to be set up for the series and the overarching story. Right now 25% of the way into the season very little has been unveiled to the audience...

In this episode we had a nice insight into Doc Soto. We got a very little insight into Madsen and Hauser in Episodes 1 & 2. In such a short season I expected more backstory to Hauser and the over-arch in the first few episodes before it kicked into COTW mode...

    ReplyDelete
  14. I couldn't recall his role on SPN so I guess I left ti off my list. Hmmm  I guess he doesn't always play bad or crazy then! XD

Some saw Hurley as under-appreciated or undervalued I know. I just never liked the character I guess. Honestly though, I cannot recall an "Aww shucks" good guy I have ever liked.

Wasn't that Tommy Madsen next to Kit in the 1963 prison infirmary giving blood to the Doctor? Well, the Dr. and his two scary looking orderlies! XD

The way Alcatraz is set up is quite odd honestly... A mystery series is almost by nature a serial. The show needs to reveal small bits of information and story as the season progresses. The entire premise is based on this mystery and it should be front and center. However to appease the network they formatted the series with COTW returned/ escaped prisoners. They really have a fine line to walk!

If they go to procedural they will lose me and serial fans like me, but if they go too much to the other side they lose the procedural lovers (and there are so many more of them... sigh). I hope they find that perfect mix that makes both sets of fans happy.... I'm not yet.

  15. I never paid attention....what is the current episode order?

    ReplyDelete
  16. He was in the monster movie noir ep of Supernatural (ep title escapes me) he was the organ player/red herring.

I think you're right about Tommy Madsen.  They said his name and it washed out of my memory right after.

You touch on the basic problem with the networks doing something that appeals to a specific audience (for example science fiction.)   It's not a genre that's going to appeal to a mass generic audience...like most sitcoms.  Yet they always head into these shows expecting to be in the top five and dump the shows when they don't get there.  So we find ourselves dealing with shows trying to be all things to all people and they mostly never make it.

    Maybe I'm tired.  I'm dissertating.

  18. In my 3rd hour of Alcatraz I am happy. This is a great show. Jorge is wonderful in every way shape and form. He is not your typical looking or acting drama star. He is the perfect balance to this show. Him and his partner are both young and yet very smart and skilled in their own rights. Sam is fabulous, his talking, faces and acting. The story so far is very engrossing. I have so many questions but like a good book every page is a delight. Keep up the great work Alcatraz. It's a good feeling to know that on a boring Monday night of TV there is finally a show out there worthy of loss of sleep. Just so you know this show is going well at the office too..............lotsa of excitement around the cubicle lotsa chatter and lotsa of love for this show. Everyone starts off the same way............should I get interested , will the show be picked up, it's a terrible way to go into a show but hey we can blame the PTB at the networks. FOX don't screw with this show like you have done with FRINGE let us learn about and love these characters. Don't come in with your writing axe and destroy it. When the fans speak you must listen. We are not trying to tell you how to do your job we just want you to understand that we the fans invest a lot of time and cable money in these shows. You want a hit show???? Pay close attention to these posts and you will have a job and a show to be proud of. Thank you.................I love television.

  19. It might also be cryogenetic suspension. --using their blood might be a way to put them in a catatonic state...but then if we look at Jack Sylvane, we see he just wakes up in the locker room...we don't see any kind of chamber as of yet...

They might have been genetically altered to time travel-

But going back to your idea, if you could send the blood to the future and make the clones there, then you might be able to induce memory transference via conscience time travel (Desmond David Hume, George Minowski (LOST-"The Constant"), Peter Bishop (FRINGE- "The Day We Died")...or you could just make a memory serum (Blue Olivia Dunham (FRINGE - "Olivia", "The Plateau", "Amber 31422", and "The Abducted"....Stangely Micheal Eklund guessed starred on "The Plateau", and "The Abducted" might also relate to this episode")

  20. I think it is a 12-episode season if I recall.....
Although I looked around and I don;t see where that number popped into my head right now. so I could be wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I agree with the first paragraph...but wtf about the second one? How can you compare two shows that run since the september so they aired four times more episodes to a show that is in its second week?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I feel so out of the loop,i missed part of the first two due to problems with Time/Warner,then last night i feel asleep after the first 10 minutes...needless to say i have no idea what direction this show is taking us? Is each episode about capturing one of the 312 prisoners?

I realize i am not crazy about any show so far this season, nor am i letting myself get vested into one.Sure i enjoy certain shows but nothing has grabbed my attention...not like Fringe..:(
      I wonder,am i sabotaging myself................

  23. Missed this--out of town. But with 15 out of 78 votes only OK and under, I may skip this one and try again next week.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That's what I saw on Wikipedia (obviously not a GREAT source, but it's what they had filled out...the titles only went to episode 5 however...)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yep, it's a 13 Episode Order so far.

We have the first 9 titles ;)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well, that means you're doing your job to get tv content well then, doesn't it? :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I sure hope so ;)

Have you tried STV+ yet? It's has a full Episode Database as well ;)

  31. Yes that is the premise.
The 302 prisoners and guards disappearing was the reason they closed Alcatraz, to cover it up. Each week one of the "63s" will return and the team wil ltry to capture them or stop them from doing whatever they are doing.

So in theory there should be an overarching season-long mystery story and a case of the week in every episode.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm leaning towards some sort of time stasis right now too... cryogenic suspension fits as well or better than any other form...

Although even if it is some sort of suspended animation for the 63s, that does not explain who is behind it, or how Hauser knew about it at the time or found out about it soon after and decided to wait 49 years to play US Time Marshall!

At first I wondered if Lucy was from present day but went back to collect data or investigate etc, but after this episode and seeing Dr. Beauregard playing a 1960's record player as he did his postmortem  I think it's clear he and Lucy are from 1963.

    ReplyDelete
  33. My thought on that is that Rebecca Madsen was at fault there and if Hauser would have been there he would have shot Kit Nelson dead just like he did in the forest later.

I guess she felt they had 12 more hours (assuming Nelson followed his 50-year old pattern) and they could find him again before the kid was killed. Sometimes police do let the kidnappers go in order to protect the hostage I guess, but it did feel odd to me too.

    ReplyDelete
  34. OK. Gonna stick with it for awhile. It has some room to grow and some intrigue. The procedural elements bogs it down some but that's the price you pay for having a genre-like show on network TV. Looking forward to some more character definition.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh.  13 is a normal order, in my mind, not a short order.
It's the traditional start order where the show hopes for a back 9.  But I guess with a mid-season show what you hope for, instead of a back 9, is a second season.

(The 8 for The River is a freakishly short order. But I suspect that might make for a good closed ended story.)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks,i am going to try and re-watch it this week,if i can keep my eyes open.I feel like i have African sleeping sickness...  )

    ReplyDelete
  37. i really enjoyed this episode. Kit Nelson was a creepy mofo.  Well hello there Mr Beauregard.. OoO whaaa? I'm intrigued with Dr. Soto more.. so he isn't just a well educated child of genius' who rebels by being obsessed with alcatraz and comics. good.

I have a bunch of questions but am going to sit back and enjoy the ride of the first season before i try to hypothesize..

    ReplyDelete
  38. Interesting episode, definitely makes me want to come back for some more.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I was excited about The River being 8 episodes since it would likely mean a serial approach, more like a mini-series.

Sadly, after hearing more about it,  it is 8 self-contained episodes with a thin overarching story.
    My interest level dropped considerably.

    ReplyDelete
  40. So far so good. I just hope it doesn't take 8 seasons to reveal how the prisoners disappeared, that I won't wait around for.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Make of these what you will Darth...

I watched the episode again and I took note of Hauser's ring. They made a point to slowly show his hand reaching for Lucy's glasses and I wondered if it was purposeful, similar to the earlier scene where Dr. Beauregard was handing Kit Nelson cigarettes. The Doctor's 'rettes were Alcatraz label and that fact came into play later of course.
At first I thought it was a Alcatraz Island on his ring... but once I grabbed some captures I could tell it was not.

I am no jewelry expert so I don't recognize it for what it is, but it looks to be some society or order ring. The pattern is vaguely rose-shaped and there is a cross-like symbol on the side so maybe Rosicrucian or similar. The Templars also used roses of course.

To me it looks like a Dharma donkey wheel inside of a rose, but without a nice crisp clean image I cannot tell honestly....

I will be looking more closely in the future episodes though!

Oh... I checked Lucy and Dr. Beauregard and they did not have similar rings on far as I could tell. The Dr. has on a simple wedding band I think.....

    ReplyDelete
  42. man...i just with the nets would suck it up and stop watering down all these cool ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I was comparing the first three Alcatraz episodes to the first three of POI and OUAT.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Boring as f*ck. This show will turn out like FlashForward (which in turn was already a mini-Lost mixed with The 4400 and any "crime-of-the-week" kind of show), cancelled by the end of the season, with too many unanswered questions.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Not bad.

     - As Darq mentioned, I'd like Garcia's character to be more sophisticated and less Hurley-ish.  His character's intelligence, accomplishments, and credentials should be reflected in his personality more.
     - Is Dr. Beauregard reanimating the dead?
     - I love Madsen's car.  Even the color is great.
     - I didn't appreciate how Det. Madsen referred to Soto as simply "a comic book writer" when defending him to Hauser.  He's a published author with multiple degrees and an expert in his field.  She couldn't have called him "an academic" instead?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Originally Soto was supposed to be aa true academic, a professor!

I'm not a huge auto expert. I think that is a Mustang Fastback right? Is it an early enough year that it could her granddad's old car via her dad?

It seemed like Dr. Beauregard was preparing for an autopsy and not re-animation, but that would be an interesting twist  and could relate to the mystery too I guess! Hmmm.....

    ReplyDelete
  47. My mind went to reanimation when Hauser mentioned he'd need something from Beauregard if Sarnoff didn't make it.  I really think the Doctor is going to get Kit Nelson up and around and put him in a cell.  Maybe It's just my overactive imagination.

  48. For me it was the best episode so far.
