The biggest point for me in negotiations is getting time off to come race, so if I don't miss races, I'll probably stay on Grey's Anatomy, Dempsey told reporters Sunday at the Daytona International Speedway where he was testing his car for an upcoming race.
"The show's doing really well," he said of the series, which returns for its eighth season this fall. "We were number one on Thursday night, so it continues to get a lot of legs. ABC hasn't had a show this year that has kind of stepped up. We're certainly talking about the future."
He's also thinking ahead when it comes to his racing. The sport is "my real passion," he said. "But I also enjoy the show. It keeps me in town so I can be around my family. So we'll see. Hopefully we can work out a deal."

Maybe TVLine's prediction about him returning part time next year was right!
ReplyDeleteThanks. It would be so weird to watch GA without Derek! Especially if Meredith was staying.
ReplyDeleteIm all good w/ people enjoying their passions but um dude...Grey's pays the bill kid.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, I feel like he'll be back all next season, but with the condition 'if I'm racing, I'm racing', seems like that makes the most sense to him anyway.
ReplyDeleteReading the undercurrent mystical between the lines, Patrick is telling us he will return without giving it away totally. Fulltime as well if they let him have time off to go racing which they already do anyway's so what's the freaking hold up. Seriously.
ReplyDeleteI agree
ReplyDeleteYou don't wake up on a Sunday an say gee,i feel like racing and go.The type of racing he is doing takes days to a week at a time for each race.So depending on the racing schedule and the schedule they want him for on Grey's,that's what he has to factor in and decide.
ReplyDeleteEven if he only came for 2/3 of next season, it'd still be good enough... Especially considering Derek and Meredith aren't really in the limelight as much anymore.
ReplyDeleteHope everything be OK at the end of negotiations!!
ReplyDeleteif he has already been racing while doing the show, I don't see why they wouldn't be able to work something out. Now if only we could get news on Ellen Pompeo and the rest.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he'll be back in some capacity. Probably not full time though.
ReplyDeletemost of his race commitments are thursday-sunday and only every 2-3 weeks, so techniquely he will only miss 2 days on set every couple of weeks. Personally don't see a problem with it, ABC's only issue would be if he was to be involved in a serious accident on the track as that probably would grind the filming to a immediate stop.
ReplyDeleteagree with you, saying he will be back and fulltime with the weeks he's got a race he will be gone for a few days generally thursday-sunday.
ReplyDeleteYep,that's why i said days to a week. I don't see a problem either, but ABC or he might. Well know soon enough.
ReplyDeletehuh.. it seems so strange that he'd prioritize a hobby *cough* excuse me, a "passion" over a job that pays the bills.. but hey, whatever makes you happy, I guess?
ReplyDeleteyeah, I don't know how they'd get around that one.. it'd be way too strange
ReplyDeleteyeah, I feel like they've been easing them out over the last few seasons - and I've discovered that I don't really mind
ReplyDeleteracing should be his part time and Grey's his full time. Priorities is all im saying.
ReplyDeleteMer and Der aren't anywhere near my fave characters on the show tbh.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way - I've never really liked Meredith, and Derek lost his appeal somewhere around season... 4? I can't even remember anymore.. but I wouldn't be heartbroken if they didn't sign on for another season.
ReplyDeleteYES. She is much less irritating than she used to be but I still wouldn't miss her. And you're right about Derek. I used to like him more. But that was several seasons back. There's so many more other interesting characters on the show.
ReplyDeleteI hope all of the originals are back for season 9
ReplyDeleteI would personally like to see them go and have Rachael Taylor come back as Lucy...I liked her character for the short time she was around, and I'd like to see Alex have a relationship work out for once.
ReplyDeleteMy ideal cast for S9 would be: Sandra Oh, Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson, Sara Ramirez, Eric Dane, Chyler Leigh, Kevin McKidd, Jessica Capshaw, Kim Raver, Sarah Drew, Jesse Williams and Rachael Taylor.
ReplyDeletethat works for me. though I do like James Pickens Jr. And sad to say, Owen never grew on me.
ReplyDeleteOwen and Teddy both have yet to really grow on me, but I feel like we need to have a stable "Cardio God" for a while and I want Owen around simply because I want Cristina to be happy (well, depending on how things go for them the remainder of the season). I do like James Pickens Jr. as well but now that Webber isn't Chief anymore, I feel like he is going to either retire to spend time taking care of Adele OR he will retire after her death.
ReplyDeleteTeddy's grown on me more than Owen, though I am not attached to either. And while Sandra Oh is so good, Cristina's never been a fave of mine. And I agree about Webber. I like him but he could easily be written out and I wouldn't necessarily miss him. But I just like the actor. Probably for sentimental reasons, as I was an X-Files fan.
ReplyDeleteI like him because I know him as Henry, Brandon's boss at the Beach Club on the original 90210 so I have some sentimental feelings there too. But I do think Webber's time is coming to an end. If not this season, then the next. I wouldn't like Cristina if it wasn't for Sandra Oh, she is what makes Cristina likable to me. If it were anyone else playing her, I'd probably hate the character. I'm not fans of Teddy, Owen or Kepner but I can tolerate them. I wouldn't miss them if they were gone, though I find Teddy and Owen add more than Kepner does.
ReplyDeleteoh I like Kepner. Another case of liking the actor helping you like the character. they just need to find a better function for her. But I agree with you otherwise. Sandra is the only thing that really makes me like Cristina at all, I think. And I also do think that Webber's days are numbered, certainly.
