Gossip Girl - Season 5 - Billy Baldwin to Return as William Van Der Woodsen

It's a good day to be a Baldwin bro!

First NBC confirmed Alec Baldwin has signed on for a seventh season of 30 Rock (hurrah!). And now, Gossip Girl sources tell me Billy Baldwin is returning to the CW series, reprising his role as Serena's (Blake Lively) father, William Van Der Woodson.

So when will we see him again and why?

Baldwin will return to the series in episode 17 of the current fifth season, set to air sometime in February. Details are under wraps, but we can tell you that "a crisis brings him back into the fold."

Dun. Dun. Dun.

And of course, we're guessing Rufus is expected to be none too pleased. Lily-Rufus fans, get ready to pounce!

Gossip Girl returns Monday, Jan. 16, with all new episodes. We finally get to see what happens after that insane, papparrazzi-triggered car crash that left Chuck's (Ed Westwick) life hanging in the balance. Bring the tissues, y'all.

  1. Oh, swell.  Billy Baldwin and his grand total of two facial expressions (blank and squinty) is coming back to Gossip Girl.  I can only hope it's an extremely brief visit.

  4. There's always a "crisis" or a "drama" at GossipGirl that brings the parent characters back. Can't they have just ONE storyline about returning because they want to see their kids? Is that really so unlikely? uh oh.

  5. meh... stop trying to make us care about Lily & Rufus, Lily has become my least favorite character (although I do adore Kelly Rutherford), I wish her character would get cancer "for real" and be written off. Rufus needs to leave Lily. The UES has destroyed his entire family. He can still make waffles in Brooklyn, I've seen him do it in seasons 1& 2. Let's get the Humphrey Clan back together and throw in Eric for good measure. I want this show to get back to its roots soooo bad. It's painful to watch. It's not even appointment TV this winter for me (at least until after March when PLL and The Lying Game wrap). So, I guess the crisis will probably involve Chivy and Rufus not telling Lily what she said and I guess the non-relevant Rhodes sister that is Carol will get some unneeded  air time. Blah, blah, blah....

  6. that doesn't seem to be how things work on the Upper East Side.. absent parents only seem to care when they need to fix something

  7. poor Rufus.. I don't think I can pinpoint the exact moment he became useless, but he faded into the background.. something's gotta give

  8. Rufus became useless about 5 minutes after married Lily. Dan was right, he is a glorified house husband who gave up his dreams, when Dan was hooking up Georgina, he was at least still rocking out, last season he signed on to manage a band (WTF happened to that? He probably quit to take care of Lily during her time of need. Hell Lily even made him scheme with Russell Thorpe, The UES corrupts absolutely).

  10. I wish I could be excited that this means Serena gets a story line, but you know her daddy's just going to ignore her and the show is going to pretend she DIDN'T spend all of season 3 obsessed with him. Here's to him curing Cece's cancer by Binging it or whatever...
