Archer - Episode 3.04 - The Man from Jupiter - Adam Reed on Working with Burt Reynolds

In the season premiere of "Archer," Burt Reynolds guest stars as Malory's (Jessica Walter) love interest, much to the chagrin of her son Sterling (H. Jon Benjamin). But what's most interesting about Reynolds playing himself on the animated spy comedy is how he wanted to be portrayed.

"We sent him the script beforehand and he noted the script up pretty good," explains "Archer" EP Adam Reed. "But it was all to make it more self-deprecating."

Reed cites an example of something Reynolds re-wrote. In the scene, Archer says his fondness for Reynolds' films influenced his career path. This is met with a curious response.

Reed explains, "Archer says, '"Operation C.I.A." is why I became a spy.' And he's [Reynolds] like, 'Really, I thought that movie sucked.'"

Reed, like his character Archer, is a huge fan of the Emmy and Golden Globe winner. This made it extra special when the Reynolds agreed to do the show.

"It was such a surreal experience being in the room with Burt Reynolds, my childhood hero," Reed says. "Just hearing him read the stuff that I wrote, it was pretty great."

Archer would most certainly agree.

Season 3 of "Archer" kicks off Thursday (Jan. 19) at 10 p.m. on FX.

  1. Burt Reynolds has become a really good sport for this type of stuff.  His guest spot on Burn Notice, also as a spy, was very tongue-in-cheek and entertaining.  Reynolds even did My Name Is Earl.  It wasn't a great show but his role was really funny.
