Alcatraz - Season 1 - FOX's New Hit? or The Latest Miss?

15 Jan 2012

Tomorrow is the series premiere of the new FOX drama Alcatraz. FOX is once again going with an Abrams project seemingly hoping to start up a new hit series that it can rely on, ever since Fringe was a ratings failure, Terra Nova never took off, and their veteran dramas are waning in the ratings. Even Glee is looking dimmer since the uneven second season -- at least from what I've been told by avid fans of the musical comedy series. The bright light of the Fall season was the new hit comedy New Girl, which has built upon Glee's middling ratings and almost makes up for Raising Hope's ratings woes as well. Still, outside of American Idol's dominating Wednesdays and Thursdays, FOX is in a predicament. It's no secret that shows lately have been failing to catch traction with an audience on FOX, much less 3 of the 4 network channels. The only one that seems to be holding itself out of the new show ratings dilemma is CBS, which has debuted several new shows that have done very well. They cut How to Be a Gentleman out at the first sign of weakness, but left Person of Interest, the other Abrams project of the 2011-2012 season in its slot to give it time to meld into the slot and its ratings have been consistent if not exemplary. (It hit a low at 2.7, in December, but is safely back as of last Thursday at a 3.2 in the 18-49s)

So, what exactly am I getting at here you might ask? After LOST, JJ Abrams (as well as the writers and producers associated with him) became the go-to guy for intriguing, well-crafted dramas, and immediately FOX wanted his next project: FRINGE. It was just procedural enough for people to be entertained weekly, and smart enough to warrant a LOST fan overlap, with a cast that could hit it out of the park. FOX gave the drama the royal treatment, and even developed a new sort of television that was a hybrid of network and cable television ideology: it allowed the show to have roughly 10-15 minutes more time per episode, and it cut down on advertisements pretty drastically. This was all obviously supposed to be a setup for the show to be a big hit. Like the biggest drama on television. They wanted ratings, and were willing to cut out ad time and take a hit like that just so that they could get the next big hit on tv. However as you all know it didn't work out that way. I would recap the entire story for this, but it's too depressing as a fan, myself, so onto the next big thing!

After Fringe came Glee. A new type of dramatic comedy that would also be a musical. It was completely different from anything ever seen on tv before (which is to say that it was really different from anything in the last 20 years because that is how far back our attention spans let us remember! I don't actually know if there was anything like this on tv before!) and it immediately found an audience. The first season of Glee was a huge bright spot on the FOX schedule, and it put them on par with CBS dramas and comedies. In season 2, they pulled it from behind American Idol (like with the previous show, Fringe) and yet it grew in the ratings, and it made Tuesdays for FOX. Then, apparently halfway through the season, the fans either got tired of what was going on, or just lost interest, and ever since the show has gone down in the ratings pretty steadily. It's even gone below a 3.0 and there doesn't seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel since at the end of this season, the show will likely lose most of its leads. (graduation KILLS all High school shows!) So, that's an issue. It's looking like this is the next Heroes of tv: 4 and done, due to a drop in the quality of story/or interest in the subject matter.

Their next big leap of faith was the staggeringly expensive Terra Nova, which had problems from the beginning, and ended up being too tame for the thrill-seekers that were expecting lots of danger. It was prepped to be pseudo-replacement for Fringe, but while it had decent family drama, it was pretty much useless and not very entertaining to the sci-fi fans that it was pitched to. The first season's ratings were even worse than the first two seasons of Fringe, which spells doom for the family drama and means that once again FOX has not yet obtained its new big hit. NEXT!

Now, that's a hell of a lot of doom and gloom, folks! But I am not quite done just yet... I have my doubts about Alcatraz being a big hit, since its premise just doesn't excite me nearly in the way that the idea for Fringe did. It feels like a show with a timer on it, like Prison Break, or a mini-series of some sort. I can't see FOX having this show go on for more than 3-5 years, but in this current state of unbelievably fierce timeslot competition with waning results and ratings all around, I'm certainly hoping against hope that this show succeeds. I hope at the very least it premieres tomorrow with a good 4.0**, and can stay in that area. If this show crashes then it's another nail in the "JJ Abrams isn't worth the attention" coffin, and while I'd say he's definitely spread thin and not all shows can be winners (ugh...Undercovers...) I have to believe that a show with a decent enough premise, a good cast, the producers of LOST, and the co-creator of LOST, Fringe, Felicity, and Person of Interest behind it, there will be a chance that we can get another good quality show out there to the viewers that won't go belly up immediately, while shows like Rob or 2 Broke Girls are doing so damned well. If Alcatraz fails, I don't know what FOX will do, and I don't know how I could bear to see such a low blow happen again. Network television is just not what it used to be. It's so strange to see how persnickety people can be even with a quality product. I hope this works out so that they don't have to expand American Idol to Mondays-Thursdays... I just don't think I can take that as a fan of scripted television.

So, what say you, SpoilerTV readers? Are you going to check out the premiere tomorrow? I'm hesitant but very excited. I think we may be in for another treat. I just hope that if it ends up being a great show, it gets the due it deserves, unlike other failed shows recently (like Lonestar, Fringe, etc.)

Also, speaking to Abrams fans directly: Will you check this show out? How do you think it will fare when compared to the now legendary LOST pilot, or the mind-bending FRINGE pilot?

**This number doesn't reflect my actual expected rating. Not at all. I chose 4.0 because they aren't really that difficult to achieve in certain timeslots/certain shows: on CBS scripted shows (NCIS) and FOX shows like X-Factor and American Idol. Every once in a while a show gets lucky and starts with the right amount of buzz, which FOX has been building for a while now.

  5. Wow great job Wilson! Thanks for this post.
As a fan of Lost and Fringe, I will check out Alcatraz with some hope, of course!
But I'm so disappointed right now by the last ratings that I'm afraid I cannot be touched by a new show.
    (Shame on me, I know.)

  10. I was not sold on this series in concept when I first heard about it. Then the initial reports were less than positive and my hopes lowered quite a bit honestly.

Over the last month or so I have to say I am getting more and more excited for the premiere. I still am not sure what to expect honestly. It needs to find that balance to be successful AND keep me watching. If it is too case of the week I will lose interest by season's end, but if it is too serialized history shows most fans will not stay tuned in.

For me to love it and keep watching the overarching story of how the Alcatraz-ians disappeared has to be heavy in every episode. With each episode being about a different re-appeared person it would appear they will not delve too deeply into any one of the disappeared prisoners. With that set up it becomes imperative they make each criminal interesting.  That is very hard to do over time.

I'm going in with high hopes and expectations held in check.....

  11. Great article. I seriously hope this show finds its audience and becomes a success. From a selfish point-of-view, I've been following the development of the show very closely since it was announced, and I checked for news and developments on a weekly basis. I care too much about this show to see it fail. I personally have a lot of faith.

  12. 4.0 ? Are you crazy? It will be lucky to get 3.0
I think FOX would concur with me on that.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hah, you think that a 3.0 is a tolerable rating for a show opening on Network television?
It's not. Not even a little bit. If it starts there, it better only increase, and we know how likely that is. POI debuted at 3.3 I believe and that was a pretty bad disappointment because usually from there shows just plummet. If Alcatraz doesn't keep a 3.0 rating through the whole season at the least then it means bad news.

Also, you're going to call me crazy to hope for a 4.0? I don't believe I ever said that I was expecting that. Please, if you're going to reply, keep it civil and don't call me names?

  14. Thanks for the post. I've been interested in this show since the concept and cast were announced, and stayed that way albeit cautiously after reading about reshoots and changes. I hope that it does well and guess it'll be interesting to see how the creators will approach the show as it seems to be another "mystery of the week/procedural" with the big overall mystery hanging over. But I like this kind of format anyway (POI, Fringe) so this is up my alley.

  15. I really have high hopes for this show. I'm definitely gonna watch it tomorrow.

  16. I'll check it out because the promos  look intreguing.

  17. I didn't want to seem rude, but... it's just your hopes seemed to be unreasonable.
Also, there is nothing wrong with debuting at 3.0 as long as shows are able to maintain that number. POI had an OK start with 3.1, and last time I checked, it had 3.2 last Thursday. In case Alcatraz recieves 3.0 (or even 2.7-2.5) it is still too early to call it a goner.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm aware of POI's trends, I wrote about that in the post itself. Regarding Alcatraz: I don't expect it to do any better than a 3.4-3.5 (that's my ceiling for the reasonable rating possibility), and I expect the second hour to be around a 2.9-3.0, that was me hoping beyond hope. I posted such a high rating because sometimes randomly shows start with really good ratings, and it'd be awesome for that to once be a show that I am actually interested in. Most recently it happened with Once Upon a Time, and just this past week the new comedy Rob started with a 4.1 (albeit right after TBBT)...

  19. I would like it to be a hit, but I am expecting that, like Fringe, audience numbers will be pretty modest.  Hope I am wrong though.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Is it too bad if I hope that the show dies after 1 episode so that we can get another season of Fringe? I mean, Fringe is WAY TOO GOOD and the ratings + Friday slot kill it :(

    ReplyDelete
  21. Won't be watching. Once Fringe and Bones go, I will officially not have any shows on network TV. I don't want to get invested in a show and have it torn away from me again. I'm beginning to fall in love with cable (and apparently, so are the Golden Globes.) Network TV is a dying breed.

    ReplyDelete
  22. For one, I feel offended that you say "other failed shows recently (like Lonestar, Fringe, etc).
In my eyes Fringe is not a failure and for right now it is still on the air. Sorry, had to get that out. Two, I'm in such a state right now, that I want every new and other show on FOX to be bad, so Fringe can stay. - Hey at least I'm honest. When I saw the first promo for Fringe, I was hooked. No other show has done that. The promos for Alcatraz don't grab me.So, no I'm probably not going to watch it.

  23. I think this'll do well at first, but then decline dramatically.

  24. No, feel the same way.

  25. I´m with you cortexifan and Failsafe23!!!!I just want our Fringe to continue!

  26. I wouldn't miss this premiere! I'm primed to love it, and I plan to. If it sucks...well, not likely, but if it does, I'll shrug and go back to watching "How I Met Your Mother" and the other CBS Monday night comedies. But I honestly can't imagine how this doesn't end up being a big success.

  27. I`m going to check it out too. While LOST had a great pilot, after the second season I lost interest. The characters started to get dumber and it continued till the very end.

With Fringe I wasn`t so excited. But the less viewers it got, the more I was happy with the quality of the show. FOX screwed it up when it moved Fringe to Thursday. It had a great lead in on Tuesdays so the show ended up with great ratings. I think they believed it can beat Grey`s or CSI: Miami in ratings. And that`s sad.

Person of Interest is an awesome show. Sure, not that serialized as Fringe or LOST were, but it just grew on me. The Pilot wasn`t that convincing and the show earned my attention a couple of weaks later. And because it`s not that serialized, I think it can continue with high ratings for quite some time. The writers just can`t screw it up. And I`m surprised about CBS picking a show like that up. I almost thought CBS stands for "see bullshit".

So with Alcatraz it`s a little complicated. I`ll definately give the show chance. And because the Fringe Pilot didn`t impress me (nor the rest fo that season except for the last two episodes) I know I can`t judge the show by seeing the Pilot.

And I have an unwritten rule about TV shows - once I start to watch something I watch it till the very end. It worked great for years, but I had to break it when I saw the fourth episode of Terra Nova. That`s where I gave up. I didn`t like it till then, but "I have rule" so I tried to stick with it. But I really had to break the rule once, just this time so far, because it was really baaaaaad.

  28. I think the problem with TV nowadays is that a lot of people want procedural shows like House and NCIS, along with reality shows such as American Idol and home shows. People seem to be too lazy to follow a bigger story arc like that of Fringe. It's like reading. A lot of people would rather watch the movie if available. But I would rather get invested in Fringe because I do appreciate its storyline, acting and writing, even though it takes some deeper thought and intellectual deduction. That's part of the reason I liked Lost so much. It made it available to get online and theorize and make it more just about sitting down for an hour once a week. I enjoy the mythology.
Shows like Breaking Bad on the other hand have pretty good rating for a cable TV show, and the bigger story arc is there, but the mythology certainly isn't there like with Fringe. I don't know if it's a societal thing or not but it's certainly disappointing to see Fringe in the talks of cancellation with it's unique and well-thought out writing.

  29. I just want to say, this isn't just a 'FOX problem' this is a problem with the big 4 networks in general. All the other networks are having the same issue with all of their shows. And as popular as some shows on cable appear to be (Breaking Bad, Mad Men) they do not have high ratings. (Or ratings that one of the 'big 4' would classify as big.) There are too many ways in which people can watch TV and hardly anyone does it live anymore. The only shows that get high ratings are reality competition and sports b/c in a way, you have to watch them live or they loose their appeal. It's a reality and for some reason the big networks don't want to face it. It's time to change with the times networks. (And for those #Fringe fans, even if FOX does cancel it, Warner Bros produces it and they can sell it to whoever else they want if a deal 'fits.'

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wilson,i will say this the first 20 are pretty good,so far anyway!

  31. What I'm finding interesting is that the approach that TPTB are taking with this show is the same they took with Fringe in S1. Half procedural half mythology.

But we all know Fringe eventually picked the side of overarching mythology in order to find a niche audience and survive, even as a genre fave show.

I think if this show starts to wander, in order to survive again they'll have to pick a side, and I think the only way for it to become a hit is if they go mainstream and focus on the procedural.
I think the problem here occurs from the fact that JJ doesn't seem to do procedural all too well.

So I'm thinking this show actually making a bang will be quite dificult.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm sure am gonna watch it...I'm a bit curious....
And well if it is a "Fringe" look-a-like I have my doubts for surviving. It is hard nowadays to bring up a new show who is different and "refreshing"....

    ReplyDelete
  33. I watched Alcatraz and loved it....I'm intrigued by the whole concept of all the worst prisoners just disappearing as the prison was about to close, and then coming back without aging. and BTW..Terra Nova is a great show, and I see you wrote "never took off" I'm happy the network disagrees with you since I read it is being renewed for 2012.

  36.  HA! Your so right,The Simpsons,Napoleon Dynamite,South Fork, wrong channel but you get my drift.I really didn't find it as bad as i thought i would, but then again my cable never works when it rains or snows, and we had snow last night so i kept loosing cable last night,i think i saw half the show, maybe? I would like to see the whole show, maybe later tonight or tomorrow.....
