Ratings Five-Spot - The Closer, Ringer, I Hate My Teenage Daughter, The Exes, Burn Notice

Allow me to plug yesterday's November Cable Ratings Guide one last time. A couple of this week's items below may be familiar if you were paying attention! Here's the Ratings Five-Spot for the week ending December 4, 2011:
  • TNT Premiere Monday - As mentioned in the Cable Guide yesterday, TNT brought back their Monday procedurals The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles with new episodes last week. While The Closer pulled 5.40 million viewers and a 0.9 A18-49 rating and was only a little down from last winter's premiere, the first ever in-season airing of Rizzoli & Isles finished with 4.78 million and a 0.8 demo, down by 0.3 from its lowest summer result. Considering the show often built from The Closer when they air in the summer, it's not a great start by comparison. But the numbers are still good for TNT.
  • Ringer Fall Finale - Several CW shows signed off till 2012 last week, but the only potential game-changing results came from the new shows. Ringer limped to the finish, with its 1.60 million viewers and 0.6 A18-49 rating grading out as the show's worst performances in two months. Those numbers would also put it among the CW's weakest shows. Not exactly how you want to head onto hiatus. Meanwhile, fellow new drama Hart of Dixie set new highs in 18-49 and 18-34, posting 1.90 million viewers and a 0.9 18-49 rating. All I will say is that considering the CW has run ten repeats of Ringer and just one of Hart of Dixie this season, I'm pretty sure they weren't expecting at this point that Hart of Dixie would be doing 0.3 better than Ringer. With The Vampire Diaries in repeats, Hart of Dixie actually tied a Muppets Christmas special as the highest-rated CW show of the week.
  • I Hate My Teenage Daughter - Fox premiered their new comedy I Hate My Teenage Daughter last Wednesday to 6.80 million viewers and a 2.8 A18-49 rating. Superficially, those numbers look pretty decent (especially considering the vile reviews from critics), but the show was in a really favorable situation. Not only did it have a good lead-in from The X Factor (which averaged a 3.7 and was at more like a 4.1 in the last half-hour), but it also had very little competition; CBS' Criminal Minds and ABC's Happy Endings were both in repeats. Next week, they'll both be back, so I'd count on a drop from this show.
  • The Exes - As mentioned in the Cable Guide, TV Land's premiere of The Exes looks like their weakest sitcom launch yet. It was the third show they've launched out of Hot in Cleveland. The other two got 0.5 in the demo on premiere night, but The Exes managed just 1.44 million viewers and a 0.3 demo. Hot in Cleveland has also been on the downswing, now down by about two-thirds from its series premiere less than 18 months ago!
  • USA Upswing - When the CBS is away, the USA will play. It's been kind of a tough fall for USA's original dramas, with Burn Notice down more than 25% from last fall and Covert Affairs doing way worse than its two previous summer runs. But their three dramas currently on the air all took big upticks last week. The most obvious explanation was that CBS' competing crime dramas went off the air for repeats or specials last week. That meant new season highs for Psych (1.2 A18-49) and Burn Notice (1.2), while Covert Affairs (1.0) tied a season high. A couple of those CBS shows return this week, so let's see if USA can hold the numbers.

  1. Thanks Spot. What's your gut feel about CW next year. I have TVD as a cert to be renewed along with Supernatural. But all the others from my point of view are all "unsafe"

  3. The only one that I would call a complete mortal lock is TVD. I have Supernatural as their second-strongest show (considering the Friday timeslot), but there is really not THAT big of a gap between SN and what I would consider their weakest show (Gossip Girl). IMO almost anything can happen based on the midseason ratings.

  4. Yep, agreed. I give a little more rating to SPN in our charts due to a) Friday and b) it's long life so far.

Always an interesting read and unique perspective.

  6. It's insane too. How does a network choose when all its shows suck (ratings wise). Production costs? The passion of the fans? The ridiculously "important" 18-35 demo?

CW does not seem like a network (maybe a netlet?) that would cancel everything except TVD and SPN so they have to keep something else... Don't they? Nikita has gone downhill fast since the second half of last year. Ringer is adequate and with those ratings can it support the level of talent on the show? Hart of Dixie is probably more cost effective (and fun for me personally), but do its subpar ratings warrant a second season?

I will give the CW one thing.... every year I am completely in the dark about what will be renewed!... and quite often shocked by their choices come the following season! XD

  7. Yep, it's hard for the cancellation table as as you say they are not a typical network and have different criteria etc. But as you say it makes it more interesting when it comes to renew/cancel time :)

  8. I wouldn't make bets on any show besides The Vampire Diaires defently coming back. All other shows have 50/50 chance.Supernatural doesn't do that much better than Nikita for example. It's going to come down to what shows the present regime likes better. Now even Gossip Girl Isn't safe.

  9. oh Gossip Girl does so horribly. I don't know how they can justify keeping it on any longer. I think the only reason they do is because they feel like it is a flagship show for them. And they can't conceivably cancel everything except TVD! :P Anyway, thanks for the write-up.

  10. Such an odd little network. (Netlet-ha!) I know they have some comedies in development but those never go over well. Of its new shows, I think Hart of Dixie stands the best chance of renewal. The numbers are low but still surprising. But maybe they will want to try and keep the genre juice flowing with The Secret Circle. For me, Ringer feels like the one that will be easiest for them to cut.

  11. Really gutted about how badly Ringer is doing, its actually a talking point at work (along with Fringe which is also down :( ). Although I can't really see where Ringer can go after one or two seasons to be honest.

  12. I can't take credit for "Netlet" ... someone on here came up with that last year sometime I believe... I love using it though! XD

At first I just used it for CW, but it is now applicable to NBC as well.

  13. oh my gosh. Sad but true. Poor NBC. :P

  14. If I had to guess based on the ratings so far, I would say that Gossip Girl gets a 13-episode final season similar to OTH this year and Nikita is just gone.  They will add at least 2 comedies and another truly dreadful reality TV show (CW reality is cringeworthy most of the time).  Vampire Diaries, Secret Circle, and Supernatural will be renewed.  IF CBS will allow Ringer to be cancelled, then Hart of Dixie gets the mercy renew and 90210 keeps growing up.

It will be an interesting upfronts this year for the CW.  Not just because of the renew-cancel factor, but also where greenlighted shows fall on the new schedule should cause quite a discussion.

  15. omg give ringer a chance it has only had about 11 eposides way better than gossip girl,90210 ,even tvd thats just my opion but there may be people out thjere that feel the same

  16. mm as much as i love supernatural it should be its last season or it will come boring when new shows desver a chance like ringer hart of dixie .Supernatural will always be a legend and it should stay that way , e,g smallive look what happened to that boring zzzzzzz no sorry but it should go down swqinging as dean says

  17. I aggree with you and except for the fall final the rating of riNger was better that Hart of Dixie's every weeks
the average made riNger third in the CW's shows with TVD and TSC at first and second place

    ReplyDelete
  18. Everyone's opinion is of course perfectly valid, but to say that Supernatural may become more boring that Heart of Dixie or Ringer is surprising.

Each episode of SPN is like a short film, you never know what is going to happen and it is usually unpredictable and exciting.

It can't be compared in the least to Smallville, because Smallville was the story of a teenage Superman who had to eventually grow up, and because the actor who portrayed him couldn't remain a teen for ever.
The last few seasons were boring because they had to keep finding new ideas to keep him from becoming Superman and it just became too long drawn out.

Supernatural is not in that situation as the actors portray their real ages and they don't have a deadline hanging over their heads of "growing- up" as Clark Kent had.
There are still a wealth of stories that can be told and if they tell interesting ones the series can go on for a few more years yet
